Partitioning The Edge Set of a Hypergraph Into Almost Regular Cycles
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Designs, Volume 26, Issue 10, October 2018, Pages 465-479 • View PublicationBIB
A cycle of length $t$ in a hypergraph is an alternating sequence $v_1,e_1,v_2\dots,v_t,e_t$ of distinct vertices $v_i$ and distinct edges $e_i$ so that $\{v_i,v_{i+1}\}\subseteq e_i$ (with $v_{t+1}:=v_1$). Let $λK_n^h$ be the $λ$-fold $n$-vertex complete $h$-graph. Let $\mathcal G=(V,E)$ be a hypergraph all of whose edges are of size at least $h$, and $2\leq c_1\leq \dots\leq c_k\leq |V|$. In order to partition the edge set of $\mathcal G$ into cycles of specified lengths $c_1, \dots, c_k$, an obvious necessary condition is that $\sum_{i=1}^k c_i=|E|$. We show that this condition is sufficient in the following cases: (i) $h\geq \max\{c_k, \lceil n/2 \rceil+1\}$; (ii) $\mathcal G=λK_n^h$, $h\geq \lceil n/2 \rceil+2$; (iii) $\mathcal G=K_n^h$, $c_1= \dots=c_k:=c$, $c|n(n-1), n\geq 85$. In (ii), we guarantee that each cycle is almost regular. In (iii), we also solve the case where a "small" subset $L$ of edges of $K_n^h$ is removed.

Resolvable Cycle Decompositions of Complete Multigraphs and Complete Equipartite Multigraphs via Layering and Detachment
Published • View PublicationBIB
We construct new resolvable decompositions of complete multigraphs and complete equipartite multigraphs into cycles of variable lengths (and a perfect matching if the vertex degrees are odd). We develop two techniques: {\em layering}, which allows us to obtain 2-factorizations of complete multigraphs from existing 2-factorizations of complete graphs, and {\em detachment}, which allows us to construct resolvable cycle decompositions of complete equipartite multigraphs from existing resolvable cycle decompositions of complete multigraphs. These techniques are applied to obtain new 2-factorizations of a specified type for both complete multigraphs and complete equipartite multigraphs, with the emphasis on new solutions to the Oberwolfach Problem and the Hamilton-Waterloo Problem. In addition, we show existence of some $α$-resolvable cycle decompositions.

Detachments of Hypergraphs I: The Berge-Johnson Problem
Published in Combin. Probab. Comput. 21 (2012), no. 4, 483-495 • View PublicationBIB
A detachment of a hypergraph is formed by splitting each vertex into one or more subvertices, and sharing the incident edges arbitrarily among the subvertices. For a given edge-colored hypergraph $\scr F$, we prove that there exists a detachment $\scr G$ such that the degree of each vertex and the multiplicity of each edge in $\scr F$ (and each color class of $\scr F$) are shared fairly among the subvertices in $\scr G$ (and each color class of $\scr G$, respectively). Let $(λ_1\dots,λ_m) K^{h_1,\dots,h_m}_{p_1,\dots,p_n}$ be a hypergraph with vertex partition $\{V_1,\dots, V_n\}$, $|V_i|=p_i$ for $1\leq i\leq n$ such that there are $λ_i$ edges of size $h_i$ incident with every $h_i$ vertices, at most one vertex from each part for $1\leq i\leq m$ (so no edge is incident with more than one vertex of a part). We use our detachment theorem to show that the obvious necessary conditions for $(λ_1\dots,λ_m) K^{h_1,\dots,h_m}_{p_1,\dots,p_n}$ to be expressed as the union $\scr G_1\cup \ldots \cup\scr G_k$ of $k$ edge-disjoint factors, where for $1\leq i\leq k$, $\scr G_i$ is $r_i$-regular, are also sufficient. Baranyai solved the case of $h_1=\dots=h_m$, $λ_1=\dots,λ_m=1$, $p_1=\dots=p_m$, $r_1=\dots =r_k$. Berge and Johnson, (and later Brouwer and Tijdeman, respectively) considered (and solved, respectively) the case of $h_i=i$, $1\leq i\leq m$, $p_1=\dots=p_m=λ_1=\dots=λ_m=r_1=\dots =r_k=1$. We also extend our result to the case where each $\scr G_i$ is almost regular.

Embedding an Edge-colored $K(a^{(p)};λ,μ)$ into a Hamiltonian Decomposition of $K(a^{(p+r)};λ,μ)$
Published in Graphs Combin. 29 (2013), no. 4, 747-755 • View PublicationBIB
Let $K(a^{(p)};λ,μ)$ be a graph with $p$ parts, each part having size $a$, in which the multiplicity of each pair of vertices in the same part (in different parts) is $λ$ ($μ$, respectively). In this paper we consider the following embedding problem: When can a graph decomposition of $K(a^{(p)};λ,μ)$ be extended to a Hamiltonian decomposition of $K(a^{(p+r)};λ,μ)$ for $r>0$? A general result is proved, which is then used to solve the embedding problem for all $r\geq \fracλ{μa}+\frac{p-1}{a-1}$. The problem is also solved when $r$ is as small as possible in two different senses, namely when $r=1$ and when $r=\fracλ{μa}-p+1$.

Embedding factorizations for 3-uniform hypergraphs
Published in J. Graph Theory 73 (2013), no. 2, 216-224 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, two results are obtained on a hypergraph embedding problem. The proof technique is itself of interest, being the first time amalgamations have been used to address the embedding of hypergraphs. The first result finds necessary and sufficient conditions for the embedding a hyperedge-colored copy of the complete 3-uniform hypergraph of order $m$, $K_m^3$, into an $r$-factorization of $K_n^3$, providing that $n> 2m+(-1+\sqrt{8m^2-16m-7})/2$. The second result finds necessary and sufficient conditions for an embedding when not only are the colors of the hyperedges of $K_m^3$ given, but also the colors of all the "pieces" of hyperedges on these $m$ vertices are prescribed (the "pieces" of hyperedges are eventually extended to hyperedges of size 3 in $K_n^3$ by adding new vertices to the hyperedges of size 1 and 2 during the embedding process). Both these results make progress towards settling an old question of Cameron on completing partial 1-factorizations of hypergraphs.

Multiply Balanced Edge Colorings of Multigraphs
Published in J. Graph Theory 70 (2012), no. 3, 297-317 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, a theorem is proved that generalizes several existing amalgamation results in various ways. The main aim is to disentangle a given edge-colored amalgamated graph so that the result is a graph in which the edges are shared out among the vertices in ways that are fair with respect to several notions of balance (such as between pairs of vertices, degrees of vertices in the both graph and in each color class, etc). The connectivity of color classes is also addressed. Most results in the literature on amalgamations focus on the disentangling of amalgamated complete graphs and complete multipartite graphs. Many such results follow as immediate corollaries to the main result in this paper, which addresses amalgamations of graphs in general, allowing for example the final graph to have multiple edges. A new corollary of the main theorem is the settling of the existence of Hamilton decompositions of the family of graphs $K(a_1,\dots, a_p;λ_1, λ_2)$; such graphs arose naturally in statistical settings.

Detachments of Amalgamated 3-uniform Hypergraphs : Factorization Consequences
Published in J. Combin. Des. 20 (2012), no. 12, 527-549 • View PublicationBIB
A detachment of a hypergraph $\scr F$ is a hypergraph obtained from $\scr F$ by splitting some or all of its vertices into more than one vertex. Amalgamating a hypergraph $\scr G$ can be thought of as taking $\scr G$, partitioning its vertices, then for each element of the partition squashing the vertices to form a single vertex in the amalgamated hypergraph $\scr F$. In this paper we use Nash-Williams lemma on laminar families to prove a detachment theorem for amalgamated 3-uniform hypergraphs, which yields a substantial generalization of previous amalgamation theorems by Hilton, Rodger and Nash-Williams. To demonstrate the power of our detachment theorem, we show that the complete 3-uniform $n$-partite multi-hypergraph $λK_{m_1,\ldots,m_n}^{3}$ can be expressed as the union $\scr G_1\cup \ldots \cup\scr G_k$ of $k$ edge-disjoint factors, where for $i=1,\ldots, k$, $\scr G_i$ is $r_i$-regular, if and only if (i) $m_i=m_j:=m$ for all $1\leq i,j\leq k$, (ii) $3$ divides $r_imn$ for each $i$, $1\leq i\leq k$, and (iii) $\sum_{i=1}^{k} r_i=λ\binom{n-1}{2}m^2$.
