Chromatic numbers of hyperbolic surfaces
Published • View PublicationBIB
This article is about chromatic numbers of hyperbolic surfaces. For a metric space, the $d$-chromatic number is the minimum number of colors needed to color the points of the space so that any two points at distance $d$ are of a different color. We prove upper bounds on the $d$-chromatic number of any hyperbolic surface which only depend on $d$. In another direction, we investigate chromatic numbers of closed genus $g$ surfaces and find upper bounds that only depend on $g$ (and not on $d$). For both problems, we construct families of examples that show that our bounds are meaningful.

The genus of curve, pants and flip graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
This article is about the graph genus of certain well studied graphs in surface theory: the curve, pants and flip graphs. We study both the genus of these graphs and the genus of their quotients by the mapping class group. The full graphs, except for in some low complexity cases, all have infinite genus. The curve graph once quotiented by the mapping class group has the genus of a complete graph so its genus is well known by a theorem of Ringel and Youngs. For the other two graphs we are able to identify the precise growth rate of the graph genus in terms of the genus of the underlying surface. The lower bounds are shown using probabilistic methods.

Flip-graph moduli spaces of filling surfaces
Published in J. Eur. Math. Soc. 19(9), 2697-2737 (2017) • View PublicationBIB
This paper is about the geometry of flip-graphs associated to triangulations of surfaces. More precisely, we consider a topological surface with a privileged boundary curve and study the spaces of its triangulations with n vertices on the boundary curve. The surfaces we consider topologically fill this boundary curve so we call them filling surfaces. The associated flip-graphs are infinite whenever the mapping class group of the surface (the group of self-homeomorphisms up to isotopy) is infinite, and we can obtain moduli spaces of flip-graphs by considering the flip-graphs up to the action of the mapping class group. This always results in finite graphs and we are interested in their geometry. Our main focus is on the diameter growth of these graphs as n increases. We obtain general estimates that hold for all topological types of filling surface. We find more precise estimates for certain families of filling surfaces and obtain asymptotic growth results for several of them. In particular, we find the exact diameter of modular flip-graphs when the filling surface is a cylinder with a single vertex on the non-privileged boundary curve.
Totally geodesic subgraphs of the pants complex

Our main theorem asserts that every Farey graph embedded in the 1-skeleton of the pants complex of any finite type surface is totally geodesic.
