The space of tropically collinear points is shellable
Published in Collectanea Mathematica 60, 1 (2009), pp 63-77 • View PublicationBIB
The space T_{d,n} of n tropically collinear points in a fixed tropical projective space TP^{d-1} is equivalent to the tropicalization of the determinantal variety of matrices of rank at most 2, which consists of real d x n matrices of tropical or Kapranov rank at most 2, modulo projective equivalence of columns. We show that it is equal to the image of the moduli space M_{0,n}(TP^{d-1},1) of n-marked tropical lines in TP^{d-1} under the evaluation map. Thus we derive a natural simplicial fan structure for T_{d,n} using a simplicial fan structure of M_{0,n}(TP^{d-1},1) which coincides with that of the space of phylogenetic trees on d+n taxa. The space of phylogenetic trees has been shown to be shellable by Trappmann and Ziegler. Using a similar method, we show that T_{d,n} is shellable with our simplicial fan structure and compute the homology of the link of the origin. The shellability of T_{d,n} has been conjectured by Develin in 2005.

Affine Buildings and Tropical Convexity
Published in Albanian J. Math. 1 (2007), no. 4, 187--211 • View PublicationBIB
The notion of convexity in tropical geometry is closely related to notions of convexity in the theory of affine buildings. We explore this relationship from a combinatorial and computational perspective. Our results include a convex hull algorithm for the Bruhat--Tits building of SL$_d(K)$ and techniques for computing with apartments and membranes. While the original inspiration was the work of Dress and Terhalle in phylogenetics, and of Faltings, Kapranov, Keel and Tevelev in algebraic geometry, our tropical algorithms will also be applicable to problems in other fields of mathematics.

Tropical Implicitization and Mixed Fiber Polytopes
Published in Software for algebraic geometry, 111--131, IMA Vol. Math. Appl., 148, Springer, New York, 2008 • View PublicationBIB
The software TrIm offers implementations of tropical implicitization and tropical elimination, as developed by Tevelev and the authors. Given a polynomial map with generic coefficients, TrIm computes the tropical variety of the image. When the image is a hypersurface, the output is the Newton polytope of the defining polynomial. TrIm can thus be used to compute mixed fiber polytopes, including secondary polytopes.

Representing tropical linear spaces by circuits
We study representations of tropical linear spaces as intersections of tropical hyperplanes of circuits. For several classes of matroids, we describe minimal tropical bases. We also show that every realizable tropical linear space has a natural, tropically linear parametrization involving its cocircuits.

The Newton Polytope of the Implicit Equation
Published in Moscow Mathematical Journal 7 (2007), no. 2, 327--346, 351 • View PublicationBIB
We apply tropical geometry to study the image of a map defined by Laurent polynomials with generic coefficients. If this image is a hypersurface then our approach gives a construction of its Newton polytope.

Tropical polytopes and cellular resolutions
Published in Experimental Mathematics 16 (2007), no. 3, 277--291 • View PublicationBIB
Tropical polytopes are images of polytopes in an affine space over the Puiseux series field under the degree map. This viewpoint gives rise to a family of cellular resolutions of monomial ideals which generalize the hull complex of Bayer and Sturmfels, instances of which improve upon the hull resolution in the sense of being smaller. We also suggest a new definition of a face of a tropical polytope, which has nicer properties than previous definitions; we give examples and provide many conjectures and directions for further research in this area.
The Hyperdeterminant and Triangulations of the 4-Cube
Published in Mathematics of Computation 77 (2008), no. 263, 1653--1679 • View PublicationBIB
The hyperdeterminant of format 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 is a polynomial of degree 24 in 16 unknowns which has 2894276 terms. We compute the Newton polytope of this polynomial and the secondary polytope of the 4-cube. The 87959448 regular triangulations of the 4-cube are classified into 25448 D-equivalence classes, one for each vertex of the Newton polytope. The 4-cube has 80876 coarsest regular subdivisions, one for each facet of the secondary polytope, but only 268 of them come from the hyperdeterminant.

Tropical Convexity via Cellular Resolutions
Published in J. Algebraic Combin. 24 (2006), no. 1, 103--114 • View PublicationBIB
The tropical convex hull of a finite set of points in tropical projective space has a natural structure of a cellular free resolution. Therefore, methods from computational commutative algebra can be used to compute tropical convex hulls. Tropical cyclic polytopes are also presented.

Classification of Six-Point Metrics
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 11 (2004), #R44 • View PublicationBIB
There are 339 combinatorial types of generic metrics on six points. They correspond to the 339 regular triangulations of the second hypersimplex Δ(6,2), which also has 14 non-regular triangulations.
