Cranston and Kim conjecture that if $G$ is a connected graph with maximum degree $Δ$ and $G$ is not a Moore Graph, then $χ_l(G^2) \le Δ^2-1$; here $χ_l$ is the list chromatic number. We prove their conjecture; in fact, this upper bound holds even for online list chromatic number.

Brooks' Theorem states that if a graph has $Δ\ge 3$ and $ω\le Δ$, then $χ\le Δ$. Borodin and Kostochka conjectured that if $Δ\ge 9$ and $ω\le Δ-1$, then $χ\le Δ-1$. We show that if $Δ\ge 13$ and $ω\le Δ-4$, then $χ\le Δ-1$. For a graph $G$, let $\mathcal{H}$ denote the subgraph of $G$ induced by vertices of degree $Δ$. We also show that if $ω\le Δ-1$ and $ω(\mathcal{H})\le Δ-6$, then $χ\le Δ-1$.

It is shown that any graph with maximum degree $Δ$ in which the average degree of the induced subgraph on the set of all neighbors of any vertex exceeds $\frac{6k^2}{6k^2 + 1}Δ+ k + 6$ is either $(Δ- k)$-colorable or contains a clique on more than $Δ- 2k$ vertices. In the $k=1$ case we improve the bound on the average degree to $\frac23Δ+ 4$ and the bound on the clique number to $Δ-1$. As corollaries, we show that every graph satisfies $χ\leq \max\set{ω, Δ- 1, 4α}$ and every graph satisfies $χ\leq \max\set{ω, Δ- 1, \ceil{\frac{15 + \sqrt{48n + 73}}{4}}}$.

Lovász gave a short proof of Brooks' theorem by coloring greedily in a good order. We give a different short proof by reducing to the cubic case. Then we show how to extend the result to (online) list coloring via the Kernel Lemma.

We characterize the initial positions from which the first player has a winning strategy in a certain two-player game. This provides a generalization of Hall's theorem. Vizing's edge coloring theorem follows from a special case.

Borodin and Kostochka conjectured that every graph $G$ with maximum degree $Δ\ge 9$ satisfies $χ\le \max\{ω, Δ-1\}$. We carry out an in-depth study of minimum counterexamples to the Borodin-Kostochka conjecture. Our main tool is the identification of graph joins that are $f$-choosable, where $f(v) = d(v) - 1$ for each vertex $v$. Since such a join cannot be an induced subgraph of a vertex critical graph with $χ= Δ$, we have a wealth of structural information about minimum counterexamples to the Borodin-Kostochka conjecture.
Our main result proves that certain conjectures that are prima facie weaker than the Borodin-Kostochka conjecture are in fact equivalent to it. One such equivalent conjecture is the following: Any graph with $χ\ge Δ= 9$ contains $K_3 * \bar{K_6}$ as a subgraph.

We prove that if $G$ is a vertex critical graph with $χ(G) \geq Δ(G) + 1 - p \geq 4$ for some $p \in \mathbb{N}$ and $ω(\fancy{H}(G)) \leq \frac{χ(G) + 1}{p + 1} - 2$, then $G = K_{χ(G)}$ or $G = O_5$. Here $\fancy{H}(G)$ is the subgraph of $G$ induced on the vertices of degree at least $χ(G)$. This simplifies and improves the results in the paper of Kostochka, Rabern and Stiebitz \cite{krs_one}.
A note on vertex partitions
We prove a general lemma about partitioning the vertex set of a graph into subgraphs of bounded degree. This lemma extends a sequence of results of Lovász, Catlin, Kostochka and Rabern.

We prove that if $G$ is a graph and $r_1, ..., r_k \in \mathbb{Z}_{\geq 0}$ such that $\sum_{i=1}^k r_i \geq Δ(G) + 2 - k$ then $V(G)$ can be partitioned into sets $V_1, ..., V_k$ such that $Δ(G[V_i]) \leq r_i$ and $G[V_i]$ contains no non-complete $r_i$-regular components for each $1 \leq i \leq k$. In particular, the vertex set of any graph $G$ can be partitioned into $\left \lceil \frac{Δ(G) + 2}{3} \right \rceil$ sets, each of which induces a disjoint union of triangles and paths.
An improvement on Brooks' Theorem
We prove that $χ(G) \leq \max {ω(G), Δ_2(G), (5/6)(Δ(G) + 1)}$ for every graph $G$ with $Δ(G) \geq 3$. Here $Δ_2$ is the parameter introduced by Stacho that gives the largest degree that a vertex $v$ can have subject to the condition that $v$ is adjacent to a vertex whose degree is at least as large as its own. This upper bound generalizes both Brooks' Theorem and the Ore-degree version of Brooks' Theorem.

We prove that $K_{χ(G)}$ is the only critical graph $G$ with $χ(G) \geq Δ(G) \geq 6$ and $ω(\mathcal{H}(G)) \leq \left \lfloor \frac{Δ(G)}{2} \right \rfloor - 2$. Here $\mathcal{H}(G)$ is the subgraph of $G$ induced on the vertices of degree at least $χ(G)$. Setting $ω(\mathcal{H}(G)) = 1$ proves a conjecture of Kierstead and Kostochka.

We prove that every graph $G$ for which $ω(G) \geq 3/4(Δ(G) + 1)$, has an independent set $I$ such that $ω(G - I) < ω(G)$. It follows that a minimum counterexample $G$ to Reed's conjecture satisfies $ω(G) < 3/4(Δ(G) + 1)$ and hence also $χ(G) > \lceil 7/6ω(G) \rceil$. We also prove that if for every induced subgraph $H$ of $G$ we have $χ(H) \leq \max{\lceil 7/6ω(H) \rceil, \lceil \frac{ω(H) + Δ(H) + 1}{2}\rceil}$, then we also have $χ(G) \leq \lceil \frac{ω(G) + Δ(G) + 1}{2}\rceil$. This gives a generic proof of the upper bound for line graphs of multigraphs proved by King et al.
At Least Half Of All Graphs Satisfy χ\leq {1/4}ω+ {3/4}Δ+ 1
We prove that for any graph G at least one of G or $\bar{G}$ satisfies $χ\leq {1/4}ω+ {3/4}Δ+ 1$. In particular, self-complementary graphs satisfy this bound.
Coloring and The Lonely Graph
We improve upper bounds on the chromatic number proven independently in \cite{reedNote} and \cite{ingo}. Our main lemma gives a sufficient condition for two paths in graph to be completely joined. Using this, we prove that if a graph has an optimal coloring with more than $\fracω{2}$ singleton color classes, then it satisfies $χ\leq \frac{ω+ Δ+ 1}{2}$. It follows that a graph satisfying $n - Δ< α+ \frac{ω- 1}{2}$ must also satisfy $χ\leq \frac{ω+ Δ+ 1}{2}$, improving the bounds in \cite{reedNote} and \cite{ingo}. We then give a simple argument showing that if a graph satisfies $χ> \frac{n + 3 - α}{2}$, then it also satisfies $χ(G) \leq \left\lceil\frac{ω(G) + Δ(G) + 1}{2}\right\rceil$. From this it follows that a graph satisfying $n - Δ< α+ ω$ also satisfies $χ(G) \leq \left\lceil\frac{ω(G) + Δ(G) + 1}{2}\right\rceil$ improving the bounds in \cite{reedNote} and \cite{ingo} even further at the cost of a ceiling. In the next sections, we generalize our main lemma to constrained colorings (e.g. r-bounded colorings). We present a generalization of Reed's conjecture to r-bounded colorings and prove the conjecture for graphs with maximal degree close to their order. Finally, we outline some applications (in \cite{BorodinKostochka} and \cite{ColoringWithDoublyCriticalEdge}) of the theory presented here to the Borodin-Kostochka conjecture and coloring graphs containing a doubly critical edge.
New upper bounds on the chromatic number of a graph
We outline some ongoing work related to a conjecture of Reed \cite{reed97} on $ω$, $Δ$, and $χ$. We conjecture that the complement of a counterexample $G$ to Reed's conjecture has connectivity on the order of $\log(|G|)$. We prove that this holds for a family (parameterized by $ε> 0$) of relaxed bounds; the $ε= 0$ limit of which is Reed's upper bound.
A note on Reed's conjecture

In \cite{reed97}, Reed conjectures that the inequality $χ(G) \leq \left \lceil \textstyle {1/2} (ω(G) + Δ(G) + 1) \right \rceil$ holds for any graph $G$. We prove this holds for a graph $G$ if $\bar{G}$ is disconnected. From this it follows that the conjecture holds for graphs with $χ(G) > \left \lceil \frac{|G|}{2} \right \rceil$. In addition, the conjecture holds for graphs with $Δ(G) \geq |G| - \sqrt{|G| + 2α(G) + 1}$. In particular, Reed's conjecture holds for graphs with $Δ(G) \geq |G| - \sqrt{|G| + 7}$. Using these results, we proceed to show that if $|G|$ is an even order counterexample to Reed's conjecture, then $\bar{G}$ has a 1-factor. Hence, for any even order graph $G$, if $χ(G) > \textstyle {1/2}(ω(G) + Δ(G) + 1) + 1$, then $\bar{G}$ is matching covered.
Some bounds on convex combinations of $ω$ and $χ$ for decompositions into many parts
A \emph{$k$--decomposition} of the complete graph $K_n$ is a decomposition of $K_n$ into $k$ spanning subgraphs $G_1,...,G_k$. For a graph parameter $p$, let $p(k;K_n)$ denote the maximum of $\displaystyle \sum_{j=1}^{k} p(G_j)$ over all $k$--decompositions of $K_n$. It is known that $χ(k;K_n) = omega(k;K_n)$ for $k \leq 3$ and conjectured that this equality holds for all $k$. In an attempt to get a handle on this, we study convex combinations of $ω$ and $χ$; namely, the graph parameters $A_r(G) = (1-r) ω(G) + r χ(G)$ for $0 \leq r \leq 1$. It is proven that $A_r(k;K_n) \leq n + {k \choose 2}$ for small $r$. In addition, we prove some generalizations of a theorem of Kostochka, et al. \cite{kostochka}.
