Derived and Residual Subspace Designs
Published in Advances in Mathematics of Communication 9 (2015), 105-115 • View PublicationBIB
A generalization of forming derived and residual designs from $t$-designs to subspace designs is proposed. A $q$-analog of a theorem by Van Trung, van Leijenhorst and Driessen is proven, stating that if for some (not necessarily realizable) parameter set the derived and residual parameter set are realizable, the same is true for the reduced parameter set. As a result, we get the existence of several previously unknown subspace designs. Some consequences are derived for the existence of large sets of subspace designs. Furthermore, it is shown that there is no $q$-analog of the large Witt design.

$2$-arcs of maximal size in the affine and the projective Hjelmslev plane over $\mathbb{Z}_{25}$

It is shown that the maximal size of a $2$-arc in the projective Hjelmslev plane over $\mathbb{Z}_{25}$ is $21$, and the $(21,2)$-arc is unique up to isomorphism. Furthermore, all maximal $(20,2)$-arcs in the affine Hjelmslev plane over $\mathbb{Z}_{25}$ are classified up to isomorphism.

Maximal integral point sets in affine planes over finite fields
Published in Discrete Mathematics Vol. 309, Nr. 13 (2009), Pages 4564-4575 • View PublicationBIB
Motivated by integral point sets in the Euclidean plane, we consider integral point sets in affine planes over finite fields. An integral point set is a set of points in the affine plane $\mathbb{F}_q^2$ over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$, where the formally defined squared Euclidean distance of every pair of points is a square in $\mathbb{F}_q$. It turns out that integral point sets over $\mathbb{F}_q$ can also be characterized as affine point sets determining certain prescribed directions, which gives a relation to the work of Blokhuis. Furthermore, in one important sub-case integral point sets can be restated as cliques in Paley graphs of square order. In this article we give new results on the automorphisms of integral point sets and classify maximal integral point sets over $\mathbb{F}_q$ for $q\leq 47$. Furthermore, we give two series of maximal integral point sets and prove their maximality.

Optimal Binary Subspace Codes of Length 6, Constant Dimension 3 and Minimum Distance 4
Published in Contemporary Mathematics 632 (2015), ISBN 978-0-8218-9860-4, 157-176 • View PublicationBIB
It is shown that the maximum size of a binary subspace code of packet length $v=6$, minimum subspace distance $d=4$, and constant dimension $k=3$ is $M=77$; in Finite Geometry terms, the maximum number of planes in $\operatorname{PG}(5,2)$ mutually intersecting in at most a point is $77$. Optimal binary $(v,M,d;k)=(6,77,4;3)$ subspace codes are classified into $5$ isomorphism types, and a computer-free construction of one isomorphism type is provided. The construction uses both geometry and finite fields theory and generalizes to any $q$, yielding a new family of $q$-ary $(6,q^6+2q^2+2q+1,4;3)$ subspace codes.

Properties of Codes with Two Homogeneous Weights
Published in Finite Fields and Their Applications 18 (2012), 711-727 • View PublicationBIB
Delsarte showed that for any projective linear code over a finite field of characteristic p with two nonzero Hamming weights w1 < w2 there exist positive integers u and s such that w1 = (p^s)u and w2 = (p^s)(u+1). Moreover, he showed that the additive group of such a code has a strongly regular Cayley graph. Here we show that for any proper regular projective linear code C over a finite Frobenius ring with two integral nonzero homogeneous weights w1 < w2, there is a positive integer d, a divisor of the order of C, and positive integer u such that w1 = du and w2 = d(u+1). In doing so, we give a new proof of the known result that any proper regular projective two-weight code code yields a strongly regular graph. We apply these results to existence questions on two-weight codes.
