A {\em leader} of a tree $T$ on $[n]$ is a vertex which has no smaller descendants in $T$. Gessel and Seo showed $$\sum_{T \in \mathcal{T}_n}u^\text{(# of leaders in $T$)} c^\text{(degree of 1 in $T$)}=u P_{n-1}(1,u,cu),$$ which is a generalization of Cayley formula, where $\mathcal{T}_n$ is the set of trees on $[n]$ and $$P_n(a,b,c)=c\prod_{i=1}^{n-1}(ia+(n-i)b+c).$$ Using a variation of Prüfer code which is called a {\em RP-code}, we give a simple bijective proof of Gessel and Seo's formula.
Probabilities on cladograms: introduction to the alpha model
The alpha model, a parametrized family of probabilities on cladograms (rooted binary leaf labeled trees), is introduced. This model is Markovian self-similar, deletion-stable (sampling consistent), and passes through the Yule, Uniform and Comb models. An explicit formula is given to calculate the probability of any cladogram or tree shape under the alpha model. Sackin's and Colless' index are shown to be $O(n^{1+α})$ with asymptotic covariance equal to 1. Thus the expected depth of a random leaf with $n$ leaves is $O(n^α)$. The number of cherries on a random alpha tree is shown to be asymptotically normal with known mean and variance. Finally the shape of published phylogenies is examined, using trees from Treebase.
Edit Distance between Unlabeled Ordered Trees

There exists a bijection between one stack sortable permutations --permutations which avoid the pattern 231-- and planar trees. We define an edit distance between permutations which is coherent with the standard edit distance between trees. This one-to-one correspondence yields a polynomial algorithm for the subpermutation problem for $(231)$ avoiding permutations. Moreover, we obtain the generating function of the edit distance between ordered trees and some special ones. For the general case we show that the mean edit distance between a planar tree and all other planar trees is at least $n/ln(n)$. Some results can be extended to labeled trees considering colored Dyck paths or equivalently colored one stack sortable permutations.

In this paper, we give a simple combinatorial explanation of a formula of A. Postnikov relating bicolored rooted trees to bicolored binary trees. We also present generalized formulas for the number of labeled k-ary trees, rooted labeled trees, and labeled plane trees.
On vertex covers, matchings and random trees
We study minimal vertex covers and maximal matchings on trees. We pay special attention to the corresponding backbones i.e. these vertices that are occupied and those that are empty in every minimal vertex cover (resp. these egdes that are occupied and those that are empty in every maximal matching). The key result in our approach is that for trees, the backbones can be recovered from a particular tri-coloring which has a simple characterization. We give applications to the computation of some averages related to the enumeration of minimal vertex covers and maximal matchings in the random labeled tree ensemble, both for finite size and in the asymptotic regime.

We extend Schaeffer's bijection between rooted quadrangulations and well-labeled trees to the general case of Eulerian planar maps with prescribed face valences, to obtain a bijection with a new class of labeled trees, which we call mobiles. Our bijection covers all the classes of maps previously enumerated by either the two-matrix model used by physicists or by the bijection with blossom trees used by combinatorists. Our bijection reduces the enumeration of maps to that, much simpler, of mobiles and moreover keeps track of the geodesic distance within the initial maps via the mobiles' labels. Generating functions for mobiles are shown to obey systems of algebraic recursion relations.

Exploiting a bijective correspondence between planar quadrangulations and well-labeled trees, we define an ensemble of infinite surfaces as a limit of uniformly distributed ensembles of quadrangulations of fixed finite volume. The limit random surface can be described in terms of a birth and death process and a sequence of multitype Galton--Watson trees. As a consequence, we find that the expected volume of the ball of radius $r$ around a marked point in the limit random surface is $Θ(r^4)$.

We study the statistics of edges and vertices in the vicinity of a reference vertex (origin) within random planar quadrangulations and Eulerian triangulations. Exact generating functions are obtained for theses graphs with fixed numbers of edges and vertices at given geodesic distances from the origin. Our analysis relies on bijections with labeled trees, in which the labels encode the information on the geodesic distance from the origin. In the case of infinitely large graphs, we give in particular explicit formulas for the probabilities that the origin have given numbers of neighboring edges and/or vertices, as well as explicit values for the corresponding moments.
A derivation of the Catalan numbers from a bijection between permutations and labeled trees
We present an algorithmic mapping from permutations of length dn to labeled n-node d-ary trees and back again. Given such a bijection, one can interpret each of the factorials in the formula for the Catalan numbers as a count of permutations.
