A geometric and combinatorial view of weighted voting
A natural partial ordering exists on the set of all weighted games and, more broadly, on all linear games. We describe several properties of the partially ordered sets formed by these games and utilize this perspective to enumerate proper linear games with one generator. We introduce a geometric approach to weighted voting by considering the convex polytope of all possible realizations of a weighted game and connect this geometric perspective to the weighted games poset in several ways. In particular, we prove that generic vertical lines in $C_n$, the union of all weighted $n$-player polytopes, correspond to maximal saturated chains in the poset of weighted games, i.e., the poset is a blueprint for how the polytopes fit together to form $C_n$. We show how to compare the relationships between the powers of the players using the polytope directly. Finally, we describe the facets of each polytope, from which we develop a method for determining the weightedness of any linear game that covers or is covered by a weighted game.

Metrization of weighted graphs

We find a set of necessary and sufficient conditions under which the weight $w:E\to\mathbb R^+$ on the graph $G=(V,E)$ can be extended to a pseudometric $d:V\times V\to\mathbb R^+$. If these conditions hold and $G$ is a connected graph, then the set $\mathfrak M_w$ of all such extensions is nonvoid and the shortest-path pseudometric $d_w$ is the greatest element of $\mathfrak M_w$ with respect to the partial ordering $d_1 \leqslant d_2$ if and only if $d_1(u,v) \leqslant d_2(u,v)$ for all $u,v\in V$. It is shown that every nonvoid poset $(\mathfrak M_w,\leqslant)$ contains the least element $ρ_{0,w}$ if and only if $G$ is a complete $k$-partite graph with $k\geqslant 2$ and in this case the explicit formula for computation of $ρ_{0,w}$ is obtained.

On the ordering of trees by the Laplacian coefficients
Published in A. Ili\' c, On the ordering of trees by the Laplacian coefficients, Linear Algebra Appl. 431 (2009) 2203-2212 • Search Publication
We generalize the results from [X.-D. Zhang, X.-P. Lv, Y.-H. Chen, \textit{Ordering trees by the Laplacian coefficients}, Linear Algebra Appl. (2009), doi:10.1016/j.laa.2009.04.018] on the partial ordering of trees with given diameter. For two $n$-vertex trees $T_1$ and $T_2$, if $c_k (T_1) \leqslant c_k (T_2)$ holds for all Laplacian coefficients $c_k$, $k = 0, 1, ..., n$, we say that $T_1$ is dominated by $T_2$ and write $T_1 \preceq_c T_2$. We proved that among $n$ vertex trees with fixed diameter $d$, the caterpillar $C_{n, d}$ has minimal Laplacian coefficients $c_k$, $k = 0, 1,..., n$. The number of incomparable pairs of trees on $\leqslant 18$ vertices is presented, as well as infinite families of examples for two other partial orderings of trees, recently proposed by Mohar. For every integer $n$, we construct a chain $\{T_i\}_{i = 0}^m$ of $n$-vertex trees of length $\frac{n^2}{4}$, such that $T_0 \cong S_n$, $T_m \cong P_n$ and $T_i \preceq_c T_{i + 1}$ for all $i = 0, 1,..., m - 1$. In addition, the characterization of the partial ordering of starlike trees is established by the majorization inequalities of the pendent path lengths. We determine the relations among the extremal trees with fixed maximum degree, and with perfect matching and further support the Laplacian coefficients as a measure of branching.

The Harary index of trees
The Harary index of a graph $G$ is recently introduced topological index, defined on the reverse distance matrix as $H(G)=\sum_{u,v \in V(G)}\frac{1}{d(u,v)}$, where $d(u,v)$ is the length of the shortest path between two distinct vertices $u$ and $v$. We present the partial ordering of starlike trees based on the Harary index and we describe the trees with the second maximal and the second minimal Harary index. In this paper, we investigate the Harary index of trees with $k$ pendent vertices and determine the extremal trees with maximal Harary index. We also characterize the extremal trees with maximal Harary index with respect to the number of vertices of degree two, matching number, independence number, radius and diameter. In addition, we characterize the extremal trees with minimal Harary index and given maximum degree. We concluded that in all presented classes, the trees with maximal Harary index are exactly those trees with the minimal Wiener index, and vice versa.
On Laplacian like energy of trees

Let $G$ be a simple undirected $n$-vertex graph with the characteristic polynomial of its Laplacian matrix $L(G)$, $\det (λI - L (G))=\sum_{k = 0}^n (-1)^k c_k λ^{n - k}$. Laplacian--like energy of a graph is newly proposed graph invariant, defined as the sum of square roots of Laplacian eigenvalues. For bipartite graphs, the Laplacian--like energy coincides with the recently defined incidence energy $IE (G)$ of a graph. In [D. Stevanovi\' c, \textit{Laplacian--like energy of trees}, MATCH Commun. Math. Comput. Chem. 61 (2009), 407--417.] the author introduced a partial ordering of graphs based on Laplacian coefficients. We point out that original proof was incorrect and illustrate the error on the example using Laplacian Estrada index. Furthermore, we found the inverse of Jacobian matrix with elements representing derivatives of symmetric polynomials of order $n$, and provide a corrected elementary proof of the fact: Let $G$ and $H$ be two $n$-vertex graphs; if for Laplacian coefficients holds $c_k (G) \leqslant c_k (H)$ for $k = 1, 2, ..., n - 1$, then $LEL (G) \leqslant LEL (H)$. In addition, we generalize this theorem and provide a necessary condition for functions that satisfy partial ordering based on Laplacian coefficients.
Partitioning in the space of antimonotonic functions
This paper studies partitions in the space of antimonotonic boolean functions on sets of n elements. The antimonotonic functions are the antichains of the partially ordered set of subsets. We analyse and characterise a natural partial ordering on this set. We study the inter- vals according to this ordering. We show how intervals of antimonotonic functions, and a fortiori the whole space of antimonotonic functions can be partitioned as disjoint unions of certain classes of intervals. These in- tervals are uniquely determined by antimonotonic functions on smaller sets. This leads to recursive enumeration algorithms and new recursion relations. Using various decompositions, we derive new recursion formu- lae for the number of antimonotonic functions and hence for the number of monotonic functions (i.e. the Dedekind number).

Some remarks on structural matrix rings and matrices with ideal entries
Published in Miskolc Mathematical Notes 12 (2011) 25-29 • View PublicationBIB
Associating to each pre-order on the indices 1,...,n the corresponding structural matrix ring, or incidence algebra, embeds the lattice of n-element pre-orders into the lattice of n x n matrix rings. Rings within the order-convex hull of the embedding, i.e. matrix rings that contain the ring of diagonal matrices, can be viewed as incidence algebras of ideal-valued, generalized pre-order relations. Certain conjugates of the upper or lower triangular matrix rings correspond to the various linear orderings of the indices, and the incidence algebras of partial orderings arise as intersections of such conjugate matrix rings.

The Möbius Function of a Restricted Composition Poset
We study a poset of compositions restricted by part size under a partial ordering introduced by Björner and Stanley. We show that our composition poset $C_{d+1}$ is isomorphic to the poset of words $A_d^*$. This allows us to use techniques developed by Björner to study the Möbius function of $C_{d+1}$. We use counting arguments and shellability as avenues for proving that the Möbius function is $μ(u,w)=(-1)^{|u|+|w|}{w\choose u}_{dn}$, where ${w\choose u}_{dn}$ is the number of $d$-normal embeddings of $u$ in $w$. We then prove that the formal power series whose coefficients are given by the zeta and the Möbius functions are both rational. Following in the footsteps of Björner and Reutenauer and Björner and Sagan, we rely on definitions to prove rationality in one case, and in another case we use finite-state automata.

Statistics on ordered partitions of sets
We introduce several statistics on ordered partitions of sets, that is, set partitions where the blocks are permuted arbitrarily. The distribution of these statistics is closely related to the q-Stirling numbers of the second kind. Some of the statistics are generalizations of known statistics on set partitions, but others are entirely new. All the new ones are sums of two statistics, inspired by statistics on permutations, where one of the two statistics is based on a certain partial ordering of the blocks of a partition.

Realizable monotonicity and inverse probability transform
Published • View PublicationBIB
A system (P_a: a in A) of probability measures on a common state space S indexed by another index set A can be ``realized'' by a system (X_a: a in A) of S-valued random variables on some probability space in such a way that each X_a is distributed as P_a. Assuming that A and S are both partially ordered, we may ask when the system (P_a: a in A) can be realized by a system (X_a: a in A) with the monotonicity property that X_a <= X_b almost surely whenever a <= b. When such a realization is possible, we call the system (P_a: a in A) ``realizably monotone.'' Such a system necessarily is stochastically monotone, that is, satisfies P_a <= P_b in stochastic ordering whenever a <= b. In general, stochastic monotonicity is not sufficient for realizable monotonicity. However, for some particular choices of partial orderings in a finite state setting, these two notions of monotonicity are equivalent. We develop an inverse probability transform for a certain broad class of posets S, and use it to explicitly construct a system (X_a: a in A) realizing the monotonicity of a stochastically monotone system when the two notions of monotonicity are equivalent.
