The extended coset leader weight enumerator of a twisted cubic code

The extended coset leader weight enumerator of the generalized Reed-Solomon $[q + 1, q - 3, 5]_q$ code is computed. The computation is considered as a question in finite geometry. For this we need the classification of the points, lines and planes in the projective three space under projectivities that leave the twisted cubic invariant. A line in three space determines a rational function of degree at most three and vice versa. Furthermore the double point scheme of a rational function is studied. The pencil of a true passant of the twisted cubic, not in an osculation plane gives a curve of genus one as double point scheme. With the Hasse-Weil bound on Fq-rational points we show that there is a 3-plane containing the passant.
On the sunflower bound for $k$-spaces, pairwise intersecting in a point

A $t$-intersecting constant dimension subspace code $C$ is a set of $k$-dimensional subspaces in a projective space PG(n,q), where distinct subspaces intersect in a $t$-dimensional subspace. A classical example of such a code is the sunflower, where all subspaces pass through the same $t$-space. The sunflower bound states that such a code is a sunflower if $|C| > \left( \frac {q^{k + 1} - q^{t + 1}}{q - 1} \right)^2 + \left( \frac {q^{k + 1} - q^{t + 1}}{q - 1} \right) + 1$. In this article we will look at the case $t=0$ and we will improve this bound for $q\geq 9$: a set $\mathcal{S}$ of $k$-spaces in PG(n,q), $q\geq 9$, pairwise intersecting in a point is a sunflower if $|\mathcal{S}|> \left(\frac{2}{\sqrt[6]{q}}+\frac{4}{\sqrt[3]{q}}-\frac{5}{\sqrt{q}}\right)\left(\frac {q^{k + 1} - 1}{q - 1}\right)^2$.
On the balanced upper chromatic number of finite projective planes
In this paper, we study vertex colorings of hypergraphs in which all color class sizes differ by at most one (balanced colorings) and each hyperedge contains at least two vertices of the same color (rainbow-free colorings). For any hypergraph $H$, the maximum number $k$ for which there is a balanced rainbow-free $k$-coloring of $H$ is called the balanced upper chromatic number of the hypergraph. We confirm the conjecture of Araujo-Pardo, Kiss and Montejano by determining the balanced upper chromatic number of the desarguesian projective plane $\mathrm{PG}(2,q)$ for all $q$. In addition, we determine asymptotically the balanced upper chromatic number of several families of non-desarguesian projective planes and also provide a general lower bound for arbitrary projective planes using probabilistic methods which determines the parameter up to a multiplicative constant.
Inherited conics in Hall planes

The existence of ovals and hyperovals is an old question in the theory of non-Desarguesian planes. The aim of this paper is to describe when a conic of ${\rm PG}(2,q)$ remains an arc in the Hall plane obtained by derivation. Some combinatorial properties of the inherited conics are obtained also in those cases when it is not an arc. The key ingredient of the proof is an old lemma by Segre-Korchmáros on Desargues configurations with perspective triangles inscribed in a conic.

Cameron-Liebler sets of k-spaces were introduced recently by Y. Filmus and F. Ihringer. We list several equivalent definitions for these Cameron-Liebler sets, by making a generalization of known results about Cameron-Liebler line sets in PG(n, q) and Cameron-Liebler sets of k-spaces in PG(2k + 1, q). We also present a classification result.

A set $U$ of unit vectors is selectively balancing if one can find two disjoint subsets $U^+$ and $U^-$, not both empty, such that the Euclidean distance between the sum of $U^+$ and the sum of $U^-$ is smaller than $1$. We prove that the minimum number of unit vectors that guarantee a selectively balancing set in $\mathbb{R}^n$ is asymptotically $\frac{1}{2} n \log n$.
A finite version of the Kakeya problem
Let $L$ be a set of lines of an affine space over a field and let $S$ be a set of points with the property that every line of $L$ is incident with at least $N$ points of $S$. Let $D$ be the set of directions of the lines of $L$ considered as points of the projective space at infinity. We give a geometric construction of a set of lines $L$, where $D$ contains an $N^{n-1}$ grid and where $S$ has size $2((1/2)N)^n$, given a starting configuration in the plane. We provide examples of such starting configurations for the reals and for finite fields. Following Dvir's proof of the finite field Kakeya conjecture and the idea of using multiplicities of Dvir, Kopparty, Saraf and Sudan, we prove a lower bound on the size of $S$ dependent on the ideal generated by the homogeneous polynomials vanishing on $D$. This bound is maximised as $((1/2)N)^n$ plus smaller order terms, for $n\geqslant 4$, when $D$ contains the points of a $N^{n-1}$ grid.
Regular finite planar maps with equal edges
There doesn't exists a finite planar map with all edges having the same length, and each vertex on exactly 5 edges.
Flat-containing and shift-blocking sets in $F_2^r$
For non-negative integers $r\ge d$, how small can a subset $C\subset F_2^r$ be, given that for any $v\in F_2^r$ there is a $d$-flat passing through $v$ and contained in $C\cup\{v\}$? Equivalently, how large can a subset $B\subset F_2^r$ be, given that for any $v\in F_2^r$ there is a linear $d$-subspace not blocked non-trivially by the translate $B+v$? A number of lower and upper bounds are obtained.

A Besicovitch set in AG(n,q) is a set of points containing a line in every direction. The Kakeya problem is to determine the minimal size of such a set. We solve the Kakeya problem in the plane, and substantially improve the known bounds for n greater than 4.
On the structure of 3-nets embedded in a projective plane

We investigate finite 3-nets embedded in a projective plane over a (finite or infinite) field of any characteristic p. Such an embedding is regular when each of the three classes of the 3-net comprises concurrent lines, and irregular otherwise. It is completely irregular when no class of the 3-net consists of concurrent lines. We are interested in embeddings of 3-nets which are irregular but the lines of one class are concurrent. For an irregular embedding of a 3-net of order n greater than 4 we prove that, if all lines from two classes are tangent to the same irreducible conic, then all lines from the third class are concurrent. We also prove the converse provided that the order n of the 3-net is smaller than p. In the complex plane, apart from a sporadic example of order n=5 due to Stipins, each known irregularly embedded 3-net has the property that all its lines are tangent to a plane cubic curve. Actually, the procedure of constructing irregular 3-nets with this property works over any field. In positive characteristic, we present some more examples for n greater than 4 and give a complete classification for n=4.
