Bounding robustness in complex networks under topological changes through majorization techniques
Published in EUROPEAN PHYSICAL JOURNAL. B, CONDENSED MATTER AND COMPLEX SYSTEMS, pagg 1-13, 2020 • View PublicationBIB
Measuring robustness is a fundamental task for analyzing the structure of complex networks. Indeed, several approaches to capture the robustness properties of a network have been proposed. In this paper we focus on spectral graph theory where robustness is measured by means of a graph invariant called Kirchhoff index, expressed in terms of eigenvalues of the Laplacian matrix associated to a graph. This graph metric is highly informative as a robustness indicator for several realworld networks that can be modeled as graphs. We discuss a methodology aimed at obtaining some new and tighter bounds of this graph invariant when links are added or removed. We take advantage of real analysis techniques, based on majorization theory and optimization of functions which preserve the majorization order (Schurconvex functions). Applications to simulated graphs show the effectiveness of our bounds, also in providing meaningful insights with respect to the results obtained in the literature.

Novel Bounds for the Normalized Laplacian Estrada and Normalized Energy Index of Graphs

For a simple and connected graph, several lower and upper bounds of graph invariants expressed in terms of the eigenvalues of the normalized Laplacian matrix have been proposed in literature. In this paper, through a unified approach based on majorization techniques, we provide some novel inequalities depending on additional information on the localization of the eigenvalues of the normalized Laplacian matrix. Some numerical examples show how sharper results can be obtained with respect to those existing in literature.

New Bounds for the Sum of Powers of Normalized Laplacian Eigenvalues of Graphs
Published in Ars Matematica Contemporanea (2016) Vol.11 (2): 403-414 • View PublicationBIB
For a simple and connected graph, a new graph invariant $s_α^{*}(G)$, defined as the sum of powers of the eigenvalues of the normalized Laplacian matrix, has been introduced by Bozkurt and Bozkurt in [7]. Lower and upper bounds have been proposed by the authors. In this paper, we localize the eigenvalues of the normalized Laplacian matrix by adapting a theoretical method, proposed in Bianchi and Torriero ([5]), based on majorization techniques. Through this approach we derive upper and lower bounds of $s_α^{*}(G)$. Some numerical examples show how sharper results can be obtained with respect to those existing in literature.
New bounds of degree-based topological indices for some classes of $c$-cyclic graphs
Published in Discrete Applied Mathematics 184 (2015) 62-75 • View PublicationBIB
Making use of a majorization technique for a suitable class of graphs, we derive upper and lower bounds for some topological indices depending on the degree sequence over all vertices, namely the first general Zagreb index and the first multiplicative Zagreb index. Specifically, after characterizing $c-$cyclic graphs $(0\leq c\leq 6)$ as those whose degree sequence belongs to particular subsets of $\mathbb{R}^{n}$, we identify the maximal and minimal vectors of these subsets with respect to the majorization order. This technique allows us to determine lower and upper bounds of the above indices recovering those existing in the literature as well obtaining new ones.
New upper and lower bounds for the additive degree-Kirchhoff index
Published in Croat. Chem. Acta 86 (4) (2013) 363-370 • View PublicationBIB
Given a simple connected graph on $N$ vertices with size $|E|$ and degree sequence $d_{1}\leq d_{2}\leq ...\leq d_{N}$, the aim of this paper is to exhibit new upper and lower bounds for the additive degree-Kirchhoff index in closed forms, not containing effective resistances but a few invariants $(N,|E|$ and the degrees $d_{i}$) and applicable in general contexts. In our arguments we follow a dual approach: along with a traditional toolbox of inequalities we also use a relatively newer method in Mathematical Chemistry, based on the majorization and Schur-convex functions. Some theoretical and numerical examples are provided, comparing the bounds obtained here and those previously known in the literature.
A majorization method for localizing graph topological indices

This paper presents a unified approach for localizing some relevant graph topological indices via majorization techniques. Through this method, old and new bounds are derived and numerical examples are provided, showing how former results in the literature could be improved.
Majorization under constraints and bounds of the second Zagreb index
Published in Mathematical Inequalities and Applications 16 (2) (2013) 329-347 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we present a theoretical analysis in order to establish maximal and minimal vectors with respect to the majorization order of particular subsets of \Re ^n: Afterwards we apply these issues to the calcula- tion of bounds for a topological descriptor of a graph known as the second Zagreb index. Finally, we show how our bounds may improve the re- sults obtained in the literature, providing some theoretical and numerical examples.
