The Combinatorics of Multi-Lane Merging
We extend the nice treatment of V. Bardenova, E. Insko, K. Johnson, and S. Sullivan of the combinatorics of two-lane mergings to the multi-lane case.
Repetition in Permutation Wordle
In a game of permutation wordle, a player attempts to guess a secret permutation in the fewest number of guesses possible. Previously, Samuel Kutin and Lawren Smithline (arXiv:2408.00903) introduced this game and proposed a strategy called cyclic shift, which they conjecture performs optimally. We continue our investigation of this conjecture by considering how information is obtained and, at times, repeated during a game of permutation wordle using an arbitrary strategy. This analysis includes several algorithms to construct a secret permutation which prompts inefficient repetition according to the player's strategy, as well as proofs of their efficacy.
Experimenting with Permutation Wordle
Consider a game of permutation wordle in which a player attempts to guess a secret permutation of length $n$ in as few guesses as possible. In each round, the guessing player is told which indices of their guessed permutation are correct. How can we optimize the player's strategy? Samuel Kutin and Lawren Smithline (arXiv:2408.00903) propose a strategy called "cyclic shift" in which all incorrect entries are shifted one index to the right in successive guesses, and they conjecture its optimality. We investigate this conjecture by formalizing what a strategy looks like, performing experimental analysis on inductively constructed strategies, and examining the coefficients of an inductive strategy's generating function.
