Effective Asymptotics of Combinatorial Systems
Analytic combinatorics studies asymptotic properties of families of combinatorial objects using complex analysis on their generating functions. In their reference book on the subject, Flajolet and Sedgewick describe a general approach that allows one to derive precise asymptotic expansions starting from systems of combinatorial equations. In the situation where the combinatorial system involves only cartesian products and disjoint unions, the generating functions satisfy polynomial systems with positivity constraints for which many results and algorithms are known. We extend these results to the general situation. This produces an almost complete algorithmic chain going from combinatorial systems to asymptotic expansions. Thus, it is possible to compute asymptotic expansions of all generating functions produced by the symbolic method of Flajolet and Sedgewick when they have algebraic-logarithmic singularities (which can be decided), under the assumption that Schanuel's conjecture from number theory holds. That conjecture is not needed for systems that do not involve the constructions of sets and cycles.

Computation of Tight Enclosures for Laplacian Eigenvalues
Published in SIAM J. Sci. Comput., vol. 42, no. 5, pp. A3210--A3232, 2020 • View PublicationBIB
Recently, there has been interest in high-precision approximations of the first eigenvalue of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on spherical triangles for combinatorial purposes. We compute improved and certified enclosures to these eigenvalues. This is achieved by applying the method of particular solutions in high precision, the enclosure being obtained by a combination of interval arithmetic and Taylor models. The index of the eigenvalue is certified by exploiting the monotonicity of the eigenvalue with respect to the domain. The classically troublesome case of singular corners is handled by combining expansions at all corners and an expansion from an interior point. In particular, this allows us to compute 100 digits of the fundamental eigenvalue for the 3D Kreweras model that has been the object of previous efforts.

Effective Coefficient Asymptotics of Multivariate Rational Functions via Semi-Numerical Algorithms for Polynomial Systems
Published in Journal of Symbolic Computation 103 (2021), 234--279 • View PublicationBIB
The coefficient sequences of multivariate rational functions appear in many areas of combinatorics. Their diagonal coefficient sequences enjoy nice arithmetic and asymptotic properties, and the field of analytic combinatorics in several variables (ACSV) makes it possible to compute asymptotic expansions. We consider these methods from the point of view of effectivity. In particular, given a rational function, ACSV requires one to determine a (generically) finite collection of points that are called critical and minimal. Criticality is an algebraic condition, meaning it is well treated by classical methods in computer algebra, while minimality is a semi-algebraic condition describing points on the boundary of the domain of convergence of a multivariate power series. We show how to obtain dominant asymptotics for the diagonal coefficient sequence of multivariate rational functions under some genericity assumptions using symbolic-numeric techniques. To our knowledge, this is the first completely automatic treatment and complexity analysis for the asymptotic enumeration of rational functions in an arbitrary number of variables.

Symbolic-Numeric Tools for Analytic Combinatorics in Several Variables

Analytic combinatorics studies the asymptotic behaviour of sequences through the analytic properties of their generating functions. This article provides effective algorithms required for the study of analytic combinatorics in several variables, together with their complexity analyses. Given a multivariate rational function we show how to compute its smooth isolated critical points, with respect to a polynomial map encoding asymptotic behaviour, in complexity singly exponential in the degree of its denominator. We introduce a numerical Kronecker representation for solutions of polynomial systems with rational coefficients and show that it can be used to decide several properties (0 coordinate, equal coordinates, sign conditions for real solutions, and vanishing of a polynomial) in good bit complexity. Among the critical points, those that are minimal---a property governed by inequalities on the moduli of the coordinates---typically determine the dominant asymptotics of the diagonal coefficient sequence. When the Taylor expansion at the origin has all non-negative coefficients (known as the `combinatorial case') and under regularity conditions, we utilize this Kronecker representation to determine probabilistically the minimal critical points in complexity singly exponential in the degree of the denominator, with good control over the exponent in the bit complexity estimate. Generically in the combinatorial case, this allows one to automatically and rigorously determine asymptotics for the diagonal coefficient sequence. Examples obtained with a preliminary implementation show the wide applicability of this approach.

Multiple binomial sums
Published in Journal of symbolic computation (2017) 80.2, pp. 351-386 • View PublicationBIB
Multiple binomial sums form a large class of multi-indexed sequences, closed under partial summation, which contains most of the sequences obtained by multiple summation of products of binomial coefficients and also all the sequences with algebraic generating function. We study the representation of the generating functions of binomial sums by integrals of rational functions. The outcome is twofold. Firstly, we show that a univariate sequence is a multiple binomial sum if and only if its generating function is the diagonal of a rational function. Secondly, we propose algorithms that decide the equality of multiple binomial sums and that compute recurrence relations for them. In conjunction with geometric simplifications of the integral representations, this approach behaves well in practice. The process avoids the computation of certificates and the problem of the appearance of spurious singularities that afflicts discrete creative telescoping, both in theory and in practice.

Non-D-finite excursions in the quarter plane
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A 121 (2014) 45-63 • View PublicationBIB
The number of excursions (finite paths starting and ending at the origin) having a given number of steps and obeying various geometric constraints is a classical topic of combinatorics and probability theory. We prove that the sequence $(e^{\mathfrak{S}}_n)_{n\geq 0}$ of numbers of excursions in the quarter plane corresponding to a nonsingular step set $\mathfrak{S} \subseteq \{0,\pm 1 \}^2$ with infinite group does not satisfy any nontrivial linear recurrence with polynomial coefficients. Accordingly, in those cases, the trivariate generating function of the numbers of walks with given length and prescribed ending point is not D-finite. Moreover, we display the asymptotics of $e^{\mathfrak{S}}_n$.

Algorithms for Combinatorial Systems: Well-Founded Systems and Newton Iterations
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory. Series A. vol. 119, issue 8, pp. 1711-1773, 2012 • View PublicationBIB
We consider systems of recursively defined combinatorial structures. We give algorithms checking that these systems are well founded, computing generating series and providing numerical values. Our framework is an articulation of the constructible classes of Flajolet and Sedgewick with Joyal's species theory. We extend the implicit species theorem to structures of size zero. A quadratic iterative Newton method is shown to solve well-founded systems combinatorially. From there, truncations of the corresponding generating series are obtained in quasi-optimal complexity. This iteration transfers to a numerical scheme that converges unconditionally to the values of the generating series inside their disk of convergence. These results provide important subroutines in random generation. Finally, the approach is extended to combinatorial differential systems.

Lindelöf Representations and (Non-)Holonomic Sequences
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, vol. 17 (1), 2010 • View PublicationBIB
Various sequences that possess explicit analytic expressions can be analysed asymptotically through integral representations due to Lindelöf, which belong to an attractive but somewhat neglected chapter of complex analysis. One of the outcomes of such analyses concerns the non-existence of linear recurrences with polynomial coefficients annihilating these sequences, and, accordingly, the non-existence of linear differential equations with polynomial coefficients annihilating their generating functions. In particular, the corresponding generating functions are transcendental. Asymptotic estimates of certain finite difference sequences come out as a byproduct of the Lindelöf approach.

On the non-holonomic character of logarithms, powers, and the n-th prime function
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, vol. 11, no. 2, article A2. 2005. • View PublicationBIB
We establish that the sequences formed by logarithms and by "fractional" powers of integers, as well as the sequence of prime numbers, are non-holonomic, thereby answering three open problems of Gerhold [Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 11 (2004), R87]. Our proofs depend on basic complex analysis, namely a conjunction of the Structure Theorem for singularities of solutions to linear differential equations and of an Abelian theorem. A brief discussion is offered regarding the scope of singularity-based methods and several naturally occurring sequences are proved to be non-holonomic.

Effective Scalar Products for D-finite Symmetric Functions
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory Series A, Volume 112 , Issue 1 (October 2005), Pages: 1 - 43 • View PublicationBIB
Many combinatorial generating functions can be expressed as combinations of symmetric functions, or extracted as sub-series and specializations from such combinations. Gessel has outlined a large class of symmetric functions for which the resulting generating functions are D-finite. We extend Gessel's work by providing algorithms that compute differential equations these generating functions satisfy in the case they are given as a scalar product of symmetric functions in Gessel's class. Examples of applications to k-regular graphs and Young tableaux with repeated entries are given. Asymptotic estimates are a natural application of our method, which we illustrate on the same model of Young tableaux. We also derive a seemingly new formula for the Kronecker product of the sum of Schur functions with itself.
