Limit laws for longest edges in empty region graphs
Empty region graphs are graphs whose vertices are points in $\mathbb{R}^d$ and where two vertices are connected by an edge whenever some associated region does not contain any other vertices. We investigate the asymptotic behaviour of long edges in empty region graphs generated by a stationary Poisson process in $\mathbb{R}^d$. {Letting} the intensity of the underlying Poisson process tend to infinity, we consider the associated point process of edge midpoints, suitably transformed edge lengths, and directions of the edges. We prove that it converges in distribution to a Poisson process on $\mathbb{R}^d \times \mathbb{R}\times\mathbb{L}^d$, where $\mathbb{L}^d$ is the space of lines in $\mathbb{R}^d$ through the origin, and that the suitably transformed length of the longest edge with midpoint in an observation window converges in distribution to a Gumbel distributed random variable. Our approach yields explicit error bounds in Kantorovich--Rubinstein distance for the point process convergence {when restricting to an observation window} and in Kolmogorov distance for the maximal edge length. The results apply uniformly to a broad class of empty region graphs, including the Gabriel graph, the relative neighbourhood graph, the beta-skeleton graph, the Mastercard graph, and the Pacman graph.
Monotonicity of facet numbers of random convex hulls
Published in Journal of Mathematical Analysis and Applications 455, 1351-1364 (2017) • View PublicationBIB
Let $X_1,\ldots,X_n$ be independent random points that are distributed according to a probability measure on $\mathbb{R}^d$ and let $P_n$ be the random convex hull generated by $X_1,\ldots,X_n$ ($n\geq d+1$). Natural classes of probability distributions are characterized for which, by means of Blaschke-Petkantschin formulae from integral geometry, one can show that the mean facet number of $P_n$ is strictly monotonically increasing in $n$.
Discrete Malliavin-Stein method: Berry-Esseen bounds for random graphs and percolation
Published • View PublicationBIB
A new Berry-Esseen bound for non-linear functionals of non-symmetric and non-homogeneous infinite Rademacher sequences is established. It is based on a discrete version of the Malliavin-Stein method and an analysis of the discrete Ornstein-Uhlenbeck semigroup. The result is applied to sub-graph counts and to the number of vertices having a prescribed degree in the Erdős-Renyi random graph. A further application deals with a percolation problem on trees.

The combinatorial structure of spatial STIT tessellations
Published in Discrete Comput. Geom. 50, 649-672 (2013) • Search Publication
Spatially homogeneous random tessellations that are stable under iteration (nesting) in the 3-dimensional Euclidean space are considered, so-called STIT tessellations. They arise as outcome of a spatio-temporal process of subsequent cell division and consequently they are not facet-to-facet. The intent of this paper is to develop a detailed analysis of the combinatorial structure of such tessellations and to determine a number of new geometric mean values, for example for the neighborhood of the typical vertex. The heart of the results is a fine classification of tessellation edges based on the type of their endpoints or on the equality relationship with other types of line segments. In the background of the proofs are delicate distributional properties of spatial STIT tessellations.
