New bounds for equiangular lines and Balla's conjecture
Let $N_α(d)$ denote the maximum number of equiangular lines in $\mathbb{R}^d$ with common angle $\arccos(α)$. Balla conjectured that, if the spectral radius order $κ_{\frac{1-α}{2α}}$ of $\frac{1-α}{2α}$ is finite, then
$$N_α(d)\leq \max\left\{\frac{(1-α^2)(1-2α^2)}{2α^4},\left\lfloor\frac{κ_{\frac{1-α}{2α}}(d-1)}{κ_{\frac{1-α}{2α}}-1}\right\rfloor\right\},$$
for any $d\geq 1$. The conjecture has previously been verified only for $α\in\left\{\frac{1}{3},\frac{1}{5},\frac{1}{1+2\sqrt{2}}\right\}$. In this paper, we prove that this conjecture holds for $α=\frac{1}{1+2\sqrt{3}}$ and $α=\sqrt{5}-2$. On the other hand, we show that Balla's conjecture fails for infinitely many $α$.
A new proof of the Lemmens-Seidel conjecture
In this paper, we give a new proof of the Lemmens-Seidel conjecture on the maximum number of equiangular lines with a common angle $\arccos(1/5)$. This conjecture was previously resolved by Cao, Koolen, Lin, and Yu in 2022 through an analysis involving forbidden subgraphs for the smallest Seidel eigenvalue $-5$. Our new proof is based on bounds on eigenvalue multiplicities of graphs with degree no larger than $14$. To control the maximum degree of the graph associated with equiangular lines, we employ a recent inequality of Balla derived by matrix projection techniques. Our strategy also leads to a new proof for the classical result obtained by Lemmens and Seidel in 1973 for the case where the common angle is $\arccos(1/3)$.
On finiteness of spectral radius order
The concept of spectral radius order plays an crucial role in the breakthrough work on equiangular lines due to Jiang, Tidor, Yao, Zhang, and Zhao [Ann. of Math. (2) 194 (2021), no. 3, 729-743]. However, it is difficult to calculate the spectral radius order explicitly in general, or even to characterize numbers with finite spectral radius order. In this paper, we characterize numbers with finite spectral radius orders in two special classes: quadratic algebraic integers and the numbers no larger than 2. Additionally, we derive precise values of the spectral radius order of two infinite families of quadratic algebraic integers.
Equiangular lines via nodal domains
For given $Δ>0$ and $0<λ<3/\sqrt{2}$, we show that the maximum multiplicity that $λ$ can appear as the second largest eigenvalue of a connected graph with maximum degree at most $Δ$ is $O_{Δ,λ}(1)$. This result answers a question due to Jiang, Tidor, Yao, Zhang and Zhao [Question 6.4, Ann. of Math. (2) 194 (2021), no. 3, 729-743] in the case of $0<λ<3/\sqrt{2}$, and consequently leads to improvements in their results on equiangular lines. Our proof is based on the concept of nodal domains of eigenfunctions. Indeed, we establish a multiplicity estimate in terms of maximum degree and cyclomatic number of the graph, via a novel construction of eigenfunctions with large number of nodal domains.
Computing the $p$-Laplacian eigenpairs of signed graphs
As a nonlinear extension of the graph Laplacian, the graph $p$-Laplacian has various applications in many fields. Due to the nonlinearity, it is very difficult to compute the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of graph $p$-Laplacian. In this paper, we establish the equivalence between the graph $p$-Laplacian eigenproblem and the tensor eigenproblem when $p$ is even. Building on this result, algorithms designed for tensor eigenproblems can be adapted to compute the eigenpairs of the graph $p$-Laplacian. For general $p>1$, we give a fast and convergent algorithm to compute the largest eigenvalue and the corresponding eigenfunction of the signless graph $p$-Laplacian. As an application, we provide a new criterion to determine when a graph is not a subgraph of another one, which outperforms existing criteria based on the linear Laplacian and adjacency matrices. Our work highlights the deep connections and numerous similarities between the spectral theories of tensors and graph $p$-Laplacians.
Spectral bounds of multi-way Cheeger constants via cyclomatic number
As a non-trivial extension of the celebrated Cheeger inequality, the higher-order Cheeger inequalities for graphs due to Lee, Oveis Gharan and Trevisan provide for each $k$ an upper bound for the $k$-way Cheeger constant in forms of $C(k)\sqrt{λ_k(G)}$, where $λ_k(G)$ is the $k$-th eigenvalue of the graph Laplacian and $C(k)$ is a constant depending only on $k$. In this article, we prove some new bounds for multi-way Cheeger constants. By shifting the index of the eigenvalue via cyclomatic number, we establish upper bound estimates with an absolute constant instead of $C(k)$. This, in particular, gives a more direct proof of Miclo's higher order Cheeger inequalities on trees. We also show a new lower bound of the multi-way Cheeger constants in terms of the spectral radius of the graph. The proofs involve the concept of discrete nodal domains and a probability argument showing generic properties of eigenfunctions.
New graph invariants based on $p$-Laplacian eigenvalues
We present monotonicity inequalities for certain functions involving eigenvalues of $p$-Laplacians on signed graphs with respect to $p$. Inspired by such monotonicity, we propose new spectrum-based graph invariants, called (variational) cut-off adjacency eigenvalues, that are relevant to certain eigenvector-dependent nonlinear eigenvalue problem. Using these invariants, we obtain new lower bounds for the $p$-Laplacian variational eigenvalues, essentially giving the state-of-the-art spectral asymptotics for these eigenvalues. Moreover, based on such invariants, we establish two inertia bounds regarding the cardinalities of a maximum independent set and a minimum edge cover, respectively. The first inertia bound enhances the classical Cvetković bound, and the second one implies that the $k$-th $p$-Laplacian variational eigenvalue is of the order $2^p$ as $p$ tends to infinity whenever $k$ is larger than the cardinality of a minimum edge cover of the underlying graph. We further discover an interesting connection between graph $p$-Laplacian eigenvalues and tensor eigenvalues and discuss applications of our invariants to spectral problems of tensors.

We establish various nodal domain theorems for $p$-Laplacians on signed graphs, which unify most of the existing results on nodal domains of graph $p$-Laplacians and arbitrary symmetric matrices. Based on our nodal domain estimates, we obtain a higher order Cheeger inequality that relates the variational eigenvalues of $p$-Laplacians and Atay-Liu's multi-way Cheeger constants on signed graphs. In the particular case of $p=1$, this leads to several identities relating variational eigenvalues and multi-way Cheeger constants. Intriguingly, our approach also leads to new results on usual graphs, including a weak version of Sturm's oscillation theorem for graph $1$-Laplacians and nonexistence of eigenvalues between the largest and second largest variational eigenvalues of $p$-Laplacians with $p>1$ on connected bipartite graphs.

In 2001, Davies, Gladwell, Leydold, and Stadler proved discrete nodal domain theorems for eigenfunctions of generalized Laplacians, i.e., symmetric matrices with non-positive off-diagonal entries. In this paper, we establish nodal domain theorems for arbitrary symmetric matrices by exploring the induced signed graph structure. Our concepts of nodal domains for any function on a signed graph are switching invariant. When the induced signed graph is balanced, our definitions and upper bound estimates reduce to existing results for generalized Laplacians. Our approach provides a more conceptual understanding of Fiedler's results on eigenfunctions of acyclic matrices. This new viewpoint leads to lower bound estimates for the number of strong nodal domains which improves previous results of Berkolaiko and Xu-Yau. We also prove a new type of lower bound estimates by a duality argument.
