Integer Flows on Cyclic Covers of Graphs
Graph covers preserve the local structure of a graph while allowing its global structure to change substantially. In this paper, we study how such changes in cyclic covers affect nowhere-zero flow properties. For a fixed integer $\ell \ge 2$, we show that for every bridgeless graph $G$, there exists an $\ell$-fold cyclic cover of $G$ that admits a nowhere-zero $3$-flow if $\ell$ is even and a nowhere-zero $4$-flow if $\ell$ is odd. These bounds are best possible in general. For odd $\ell$, we further investigate which bridgeless graphs admit an $\ell$-fold cyclic cover with a nowhere-zero $3$-flow.
Equitable coloring of sparse planar graphs
Published in SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics, 24(4):1572--1583, 2010 • View Publication • BIB
A proper vertex coloring of a graph $G$ is equitable if the sizes of color classes differ by at most one. The equitable chromatic threshold $χ_{eq}^*(G)$ of $G$ is the smallest integer $m$ such that $G$ is equitably $n$-colorable for all $n\ge m$. We show that for planar graphs $G$ with minimum degree at least two, $χ_{eq}^*(G)\le 4$ if the girth of $G$ is at least $10$, and $χ_{eq}^*(G)\le 3$ if the girth of $G$ is at least $14$.
