Weakly Hadamard diagonalizable graphs and Quantum State Transfer
Hadamard diagonalizable graphs are undirected graphs for which the corresponding Laplacian is diagonalizable by a Hadamard matrix. Such graphs have been studied in the context of quantum state transfer. Recently, the concept of a weak Hadamard matrix was introduced: a $\{-1,0, 1\}$-matrix $P$ such that $PP^T$ is tridiagonal, as well as the concept of weakly Hadamard diagonalizable graphs. We therefore naturally explore quantum state transfer in these generalized Hadamards. Given the infancy of the topic, we provide numerous properties and constructions of weak Hadamard matrices and weakly Hadamard diagonalizable graphs in order to better understand them.

The Complete Positivity of Symmetric Tridiagonal and Pentadiagonal Matrices
Published • View PublicationBIB
We provide a decomposition that is sufficient in showing when a symmetric tridiagonal matrix $A$ is completely positive. Our decomposition can be applied to a wide range of matrices. We give alternate proofs for a number of related results found in the literature in a simple, straightforward manner. We show that the cp-rank of any irreducible tridiagonal doubly stochastic matrix is equal to its rank. We then consider symmetric pentadiagonal matrices, proving some analogous results, and providing two different decompositions sufficient for complete positivity. We illustrate our constructions with a number of examples.

Centrosymmetric Stochastic Matrices

We consider the convex set $Γ_{m,n}$ of $m\times n$ stochastic matrices and the convex set $Γ_{m,n}^π\subset Γ_{m,n}$ of $m\times n$ centrosymmetric stochastic matrices (stochastic matrices that are symmetric under rotation by 180 degrees). For $Γ_{m,n}$, we demonstrate a Birkhoff theorem for its extreme points and create a basis from certain $(0,1)$-matrices. For $Γ_{m,n}^π$, we characterize its extreme points and create bases, whose construction depends on the parity of $m$, using our basis construction for stochastic matrices. For each of $Γ_{m,n}$ and $Γ_{m,n}^π$, we further characterize their extreme points in terms of their associated bipartite graphs, we discuss a graph parameter called the fill and compute it for the various basis elements, and we examine the number of vertices of the faces of these sets. We provide examples illustrating the results throughout.
Perfect quantum state transfer in weighted paths with potentials (loops) using orthogonal polynomials
Published in Linear and Multilinear Algebra (2018): 1-19 • View PublicationBIB
A simple method for transmitting quantum states within a quantum computer is via a quantum spin chain---that is, a path on $n$ vertices. Unweighted paths are of limited use, and so a natural generalization is to consider weighted paths; this has been further generalized to allow for loops (\emph{potentials} in the physics literature). We study the particularly important situation of perfect state transfer with respect to the corresponding adjacency matrix or Laplacian through the use of orthogonal polynomials. Low-dimensional examples are given in detail. Our main result is that PST with respect to the Laplacian matrix cannot occur for weighted paths on $n\geq 3$ vertices nor can it occur for certain symmetric weighted trees. The methods used lead us to a conjecture directly linking the rationality of the weights of weighted paths on $n>3$ vertices, with or without loops, with the capacity for PST between the end vertices with respect to the adjacency matrix.
