No extremal square-free words over alphabets of size at least 5
A word over an alphabet $\mathbb A$ contains a square if it has a subword of the form $XX$ where $X$ is a word. A word $W$ is \emph{extremal square-free} if it does not contain a square, but it contains a square as soon as any letter of $\mathbb A$ is inserted at any position of $W$. Grytczuk, Kordulewski, and Niewiadomski conjectured that there are no extremal square-free words over alphabets of size at least 4. We prove this for alphabets of size at least 5. Our proof also implies that the sequence of \emph{nonchalant words} defined by Grytczuk, Kordulewski, and Niewiadomski is infinite and converges to an infinite word for all alphabets of size at least 5.

Ramsey size linear and generalization
More than thirty years ago, Erdős, Faudree, Rousseau, and Schelp posed a fundamental question in extremal graph theory: What is the optimal constant $c_k$ such that $r(C_{2k+1}, G) \le c_k m$ for any graph $G$ with $m$ edges and no isolated vertices? In this paper, we make a significant step towards answering this question by proving that $r(C_{2k+1}, G) \le (2 + o(1)) m + p,$ where $p$ denotes the number of vertices in $G$. This result provides the first improvement on the original open problem. Additionally, we extend the work of Goddard and Kleitman and independently Sidorenko, who proved that $r(K_3, G) \le 2m + 1$ for any graph $G$ with $m$ edges and no isolated vertices. We generalize their findings to the clique version, establishing that $r(K_r, G) \le c_r m^{(r-1)/2}$, and to the multicolor setting, showing that $r_{k+1}(K_3; G) \le c_k m^{(k+1)/2}.$

Graphon branching processes and fractional isomorphism
In their study of the giant component in inhomogeneous random graphs, Bollobás, Janson, and Riordan introduced a class of branching processes parametrized by a possibly unbounded graphon. We prove that the tree structures underlying two such branching processes have the same distributions if and only if the corresponding graphons are fractionally isomorphic, a notion introduced by Grebík and Rocha. A different class of branching processes was introduced by Hladký, Nachmias, and Tran in relation to uniform spanning trees in finite graphs approximating a given connected graphon. We prove that that the tree structures of two such branching processes have the same distributions if and only if the corresponding graphons are fractionally isomorphic up to scalar multiple. Combined with a recent result of Archer and Shalev, this implies that if uniform spanning trees of two dense graphs have a similar local structure, they have a similar scaling limit. As a side result we give a characterization of fractional isomorphism for graphs as well as graphons in terms of their connected components.

Characterization of flip process rules with the same trajectories
Garbe, Hladký, Šileikis and Skerman [Ann. Inst. Henri Poincaré Probab. Stat., 60 (2024), pp. 2878-2922] recently introduced a general class of random graph processes called flip processes and proved that the typical evolution of these discrete-time random graph processes corresponds to certain continuous-time deterministic graphon trajectories. We obtain a complete characterization of the equivalence classes of flip process rules with the same graphon trajectories. As an application, we characterize the flip process rules which are unique in their equivalence classes. These include several natural families of rules such as the complementing rules, the component completion rules, the extremist rules, and the clique removal rules.

Approximating fractionally isomorphic graphons
Published • View PublicationBIB
Grebík and Rocha [Fractional Isomorphism of Graphons, Combinatorica 42, pp 365-404 (2022)] extended the well studied notion of fractional isomorphism of graphs to graphons. We prove that fractionally isomorphic graphons can be approximated in the cut distance by fractionally isomorphic finite graphs. This answers the main question from ibid. As an easy but convenient corollary, we deduce that every regular graphon can be approximated by regular graphs.

Density of small diameter subgraphs in $K_r$-free graphs
We denote by $\text{ex}(n, H, F)$ the maximum number of copies of $H$ in an $n$-vertex graph that does not contain $F$ as a subgraph. Recently, Grzesik, Győri, Salia, Tompkins considered conditions on $H$ under which $\text{ex}(n, H, K_r)$ is asymptotically attained at a blow-up of $K_{r-1}$, and proposed a conjecture. In this note we disprove their conjecture.
Prominent examples of flip processes

Flip processes, introduced in [Garbe, Hladký, Šileikis, Skerman: From flip processes to dynamical systems on graphons], are a class of random graph processes defined using a rule which is just a function $\mathcal{R}:\mathcal{H}_k\rightarrow \mathcal{H}_k$ from all labelled graphs of a fixed order $k$ into itself. The process starts with an arbitrary given $n$-vertex graph $G_0$. In each step, the graph $G_i$ is obtained by sampling $k$ random vertices $v_1,\ldots,v_k$ of $G_{i-1}$ and replacing the induced graph $G_{i-1}[v_1,\ldots,v_k]$ by $\mathcal{R}(G_{i-1}[v_1,\ldots,v_k])$. Using the formalism of dynamical systems on graphons associated to each such flip process from ibid. we study several specific flip processes, including the triangle removal flip process and its generalizations, 'extremist flip processes' (in which $\mathcal{R}(H)$ is either a clique or an independent set, depending on whether $e(H)$ has less or more than half of all potential edges), and 'ignorant flip processes' in which the output $\mathcal{R}(H)$ does not depend on $H$.

Minimum degrees for powers of paths and cycles
Published in SIAM J. Discrete Math. 36 (2022), no. 4, 2667-2736 • View PublicationBIB
We study minimum degree conditions under which a graph $G$ contains $k$th powers of paths and cycles of arbitrary specified lengths. We determine precise thresholds, assuming that the order of $G$ is large. This extends a result of Allen, Böttcher and Hladký [J. Lond. Math. Soc. (2) 84(2) (2011), 269--302] concerning the containment of squares of paths and squares of cycles of arbitrary specified lengths and settles a conjecture of theirs in the affirmative.
Longest paths in random hypergraphs

Given integers $k,j$ with $1\le j \le k-1$, we consider the length of the longest $j$-tight path in the binomial random $k$-uniform hypergraph $H^k(n,p)$. We show that this length undergoes a phase transition from logarithmic length to linear and determine the critical threshold, as well as proving upper and lower bounds on the length in the subcritical and supercritical ranges. In particular, for the supercritical case we introduce the `Pathfinder' algorithm, a depth-first search algorithm which discovers $j$-tight paths in a $k$-uniform hypergraph. We prove that, in the supercritical case, with high probability this algorithm will find a long $j$-tight path.

We prove that certain classes of metrically homogeneous graphs omitting triangles of odd short perimeter as well as triangles of long perimeter have the extension property for partial automorphisms and we describe their Ramsey expansions.
