One of the simplest methods of generating a random graph with a given degree sequence is provided by the Monte Carlo Markov Chain method using switches. The switch Markov chain converges to the uniform distribution, but generally the rate of convergence is not known. After a number of results concerning various degree sequences, rapid mixing was established for so-called $P$-stable degree sequences (including that of directed graphs), which covers every previously known rapidly mixing region of degree sequences.
In this paper we give a non-trivial family of degree sequences that are not $P$-stable and the switch Markov chain is still rapidly mixing on them. This family has an intimate connection to Tyshkevich-decompositions and strong stability as well.

We call a subgraph of an edge-colored graph rainbow subgraph, if all of its edges have different colors. The anti-Ramsey number of a graph $G$ in a complete graph $K_{n}$, denoted by $ar(K_{n}, G)$, is the maximum number of colors in an edge-coloring of $K_{n}$ with no rainbow subgraph copy of $G$. In this paper, we determine the exact value of the anti-Ramsey number for star forests and the approximate value of the anti-Ramsey number for linear forests. Furthermore, we compute the exact value of $ar(K_{n}, 2P_{4})$ for $n\ge 8$ and $ar(K_{n}, S_{p,q})$ for large $n$, where $S_{p,q}$ is the double star with $p+q$ leaves.
Turán numbers of Berge trees
A classical conjecture of Erdős and Sós asks to determine the Turán number of a tree. We consider variants of this problem in the settings of hypergraphs and multi-hypergraphs. In particular, for all $k$ and $r$, with $r \ge k (k-2)$, we show that any $r$-uniform hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ with more than $\frac{n(k-1)}{r+1}$ hyperedges contains a Berge copy of any tree with $k$ edges different from the $k$-edge star. This bound is sharp when $r+1$ divides $n$ and for such values of $n$ we determine the extremal hypergraphs.

In this note, we improve on results of Hoppen, Kohayakawa and Lefmann about the maximum number of edge colorings without monochromatic copies of a star of a fixed size that a graph on $n$ vertices may admit. Our results rely on an improved application of an entropy inequality of Shearer.
$3$-uniform hypergraphs without a cycle of length five
In this paper we show that the maximum number of hyperedges in a $3$-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices without a (Berge) cycle of length five is less than $(0.254 + o(1))n^{3/2}$, improving an estimate of Bollobás and Győri.
We obtain this result by showing that not many $3$-paths can start from certain subgraphs of the shadow.

We extend a result of Griggs and Yeh about the maximum possible value of the L(2,1)-labeling number of a graph in terms of its maximum degree to oriented graphs. We consider the problem both in the usual definition of the oriented L(2,1)-labeling number and in some variants we introduce.
The Structure of Hypergraphs without long Berge cycles
We study the structure of $r$-uniform hypergraphs containing no Berge cycles of length at least $k$ for $k \leq r$, and determine that such hypergraphs have some special substructure. In particular we determine the extremal number of such hypergraphs, giving an affirmative answer to the conjectured value when $k=r$ and giving a a simple solution to a recent result of Kostochka-Luo when $k < r$.
Optimal pebbling number of the square grid
A pebbling move on a graph removes two pebbles from a vertex and adds one pebble to an adjacent vertex. A vertex is reachable from a pebble distribution if it is possible to move a pebble to that vertex using pebbling moves. The optimal pebbling number $π_{opt}$ is the smallest number m needed to guarantee a pebble distribution of m pebbles from which any vertex is reachable. The optimal pebbling number of the square grid graph $P_n\square P_m$ was investigated in several papers. In this paper, we present a new method using some recent ideas to give a lower bound on $π_{opt}$. We apply this technique to prove that $π_{opt}(P_n\square P_m)\geq \frac{2}{13}nm$. Our method also gives a new proof for $π_{opt}(P_n)=π_{opt}(C_n)=\left\lceil\frac{2n}{3}\right\rceil$.

The maximum size of an $r$-uniform hypergraph without a Berge cycle of length at least $k$ has been determined for all $k \ge r+3$ by Füredi, Kostochka and Luo and for $k<r$ (and $k=r$, asymptotically) by Kostochka and Luo. In this paper, we settle the remaining cases: $k=r+1$ and $k=r+2$, proving a conjecture of Füredi, Kostochka and Luo.

Let $F$ be a fixed graph. The rainbow Turán number of $F$ is defined as the maximum number of edges in a graph on $n$ vertices that has a proper edge-coloring with no rainbow copy of $F$ (where a rainbow copy of $F$ means a copy of $F$ all of whose edges have different colours). The systematic study of such problems was initiated by Keevash, Mubayi, Sudakov and Verstraëte.
In this paper, we show that the rainbow Turán number of a path with $k+1$ edges is less than $\left(\frac{9k}{7}+2\right) n$, improving an earlier estimate of Johnston, Palmer and Sarkar.
Cycle Traversability for Claw-free Graphs and Polyhedral Maps
Let $G$ be a graph, and $v\in V(G)$ and $S\subseteq V(G)\backslash v$ of size at least $k$. An important result on graph connectivity due to Perfect states that, if $v$ and $S$ are $k$-linked, then a $(k-1)$-link between a vertex $v$ and $S$ can be extended to a $k$-link between $v$ and $S$ such that the endvertices of the $(k-1)$-link are also the endvertices of the $k$-link. We begin by proving a generalization of Perfect's result by showing that, if two disjoint sets $S_1$ and $S_2$ are $k$-linked, then a $t$-link ($t< k$) between two disjoint sets $S_1$ and $S_2$ can be extended to a $k$-link between $S_1$ and $S_2$ such that the endvertices of the $t$-link are preserved in the $k$-link.
Next, we are able to use these results to show that a 3-connected claw-free graph always has a cycle passing through any given five vertices but avoiding any other one specified vertex. We also show that this result is sharp by exhibiting an infinite family of 3-connected claw-free graphs in which there is no cycle containing a certain set of six vertices but avoiding a seventh specified vertex. A direct corollary of our main result shows that, a 3-connected claw-free graph has a topological wheel minor $W_k$ with $k\le 5$ if and only if it has a vertex of degree at least $k$.
Finally, we also show that a graph polyhedrally embedded in a surface always has a cycle passing through any given three vertices but avoiding any other specified vertex. The result is best possible in the sense that the polyhedral embedding assumption is necessary, and there are infinitely many graphs polyhedrally embedded in any surface having no cycle containing a certain set of four vertices but avoiding a fifth specified vertex.

Generalizing Turán's classical extremal problem, Alon and Shikhelman investigated the problem of maximizing the number of $T$ copies in an $H$-free graph, for a pair of graphs $T$ and $H$. Whereas Alon and Shikhelman were primarily interested in determining the order of magnitude for large classes of graphs $H$, we focus on the case when $T$ and $H$ are paths, where we find asymptotic and in some cases exact results. We also consider other structures like stars and the set of cycles of length at least $k$, where we derive asymptotically sharp estimates. Our results generalize well-known extremal theorems of Erdős and Gallai.

Given a graph $H$ and a set of graphs $\mathcal F$, let $ex(n,H,\mathcal F)$ denote the maximum possible number of copies of $H$ in an $\mathcal F$-free graph on $n$ vertices. We investigate the function $ex(n,H,\mathcal F)$, when $H$ and members of $\mathcal F$ are cycles. Let $C_k$ denote the cycle of length $k$ and let $\mathscr C_k=\{C_3,C_4,\ldots,C_k\}$. Some of our main results are the following.
(i) We show that $ex(n, C_{2l}, C_{2k}) = Θ(n^l)$ for any $l, k \ge 2$. Moreover, we determine it asymptotically in the following cases: We show that $ex(n,C_4,C_{2k}) = (1+o(1)) \frac{(k-1)(k-2)}{4} n^2$ and that the maximum possible number of $C_6$'s in a $C_8$-free bipartite graph is $n^3 + O(n^{5/2})$.
(ii) Solymosi and Wong proved that if Erdős's Girth Conjecture holds, then for any $l \ge 3$ we have $ex(n,C_{2l},\mathscr C_{2l-1})=Θ(n^{2l/(l-1)})$. We prove that forbidding any other even cycle decreases the number of $C_{2l}$'s significantly: For any $k > l$, we have $ex(n,C_{2l},\mathscr C_{2l-1} \cup \{C_{2k}\})=Θ(n^2).$ More generally, we show that for any $k > l$ and $m \ge 2$ such that $2k \neq ml$, we have $ex(n,C_{ml},\mathscr C_{2l-1} \cup \{C_{2k}\})=Θ(n^m).$
(iii) We prove $ex(n,C_{2l+1},\mathscr C_{2l})=Θ(n^{2+1/l}),$ provided a strong version of Erdős's Girth Conjecture holds (which is known to be true when $l = 2, 3, 5$). Moreover, forbidding one more cycle decreases the number of $C_{2l+1}$'s significantly: More precisely, we have $ex(n, C_{2l+1}, \mathscr C_{2l} \cup \{C_{2k}\}) = O(n^{2-\frac{1}{l+1}}),$ and $ex(n, C_{2l+1}, \mathscr C_{2l} \cup \{C_{2k+1}\}) = O(n^2)$ for $l > k \ge 2$.
(iv) We also study the maximum number of paths of given length in a $C_k$-free graph, and prove asymptotically sharp bounds in some cases.
On the maximum size of connected hypergraphs without a path of given length
In this note we asymptotically determine the maximum number of hyperedges possible in an $r$-uniform, connected $n$-vertex hypergraph without a Berge path of length $k$, as $n$ and $k$ tend to infinity. We show that, unlike in the graph case, the multiplicative constant is smaller with the assumption of connectivity.

A classical result of Bondy and Simonovits in extremal graph theory states that if a graph on $n$ vertices contains no cycle of length $2k$ then it has at most $O(n^{1+1/k})$ edges. However, matching lower bounds are only known for $k=2,3,5$.
In this paper we study ordered variants of this problem and prove some tight estimates for a certain class of ordered cycles that we call bordered cycles. In particular, we show that the maximum number of edges in an ordered graph avoiding bordered cycles of length at most $2k$ is $Θ(n^{1+1/k})$.
Strengthening the result of Bondy and Simonovits in the case of 6-cycles, we also show that it is enough to forbid these bordered orderings of the 6-cycle to guarantee an upper bound of $O(n^{4/3})$ on the number of edges.
Optimal pebbling and rubbling of graphs with given diameter
A pebbling move on a graph removes two pebbles from a vertex and adds one pebble to an adjacent vertex. A vertex is reachable from a pebble distribution if it is possible to move a pebble to that vertex using pebbling moves. The optimal pebbling number $π_{opt}$ is the smallest number $m$ needed to guarantee a pebble distribution of $m$ pebbles from which any vertex is reachable. A rubbling move is similar to a pebbling move, but it can remove the two pebbles from two different vertex. The optimal rubbling number $ρ_{opt}$ is defined analogously to the optimal pebbling number.
In this paper we give lower bounds on both the optimal pebbling and rubbling numbers by the distance $k$ domination number. With this bound we prove that for each $k$ there is a graph $G$ with diameter $k$ such that $ρ_{opt}(G)=π_{opt}(G)=2^k$.

Let $k \ge 2$ be an integer. We show that if $s = 2$ and $t \ge 2$, or $s = t = 3$, then the maximum possible number of edges in a $C_{2k+1}$-free graph containing no induced copy of $K_{s,t}$ is asymptotically equal to $(t - s + 1)^{1/s}\left(\frac{n}{2}\right)^{2-1/s}$ except when $k = s = t = 2$.
This strengthens a result of Allen, Keevash, Sudakov and Verstraëte and answers a question of Loh, Tait and Timmons.

We study the problem of guarding orthogonal art galleries with horizontal mobile guards (alternatively, vertical) and point guards, using "rectangular vision". We prove a sharp bound on the minimum number of point guards required to cover the gallery in terms of the minimum number of vertical mobile guards and the minimum number of horizontal mobile guards required to cover the gallery. Furthermore, we show that the latter two numbers can be calculated in linear time.

Let $\mathcal{F}$ be a family of $3$-uniform linear hypergraphs. The linear Turán number of $\mathcal F$ is the maximum possible number of edges in a $3$-uniform linear hypergraph on $n$ vertices which contains no member of $\mathcal{F}$ as a subhypergraph.
In this paper we show that the linear Turán number of the five cycle $C_5$ (in the Berge sense) is $\frac{1}{3 \sqrt3}n^{3/2}$ asymptotically. We also show that the linear Turán number of the four cycle $C_4$ and $\{C_3, C_4\}$ are equal asmptotically, which is a strengthening of a theorem of Lazebnik and Verstraëte.
We establish a connection between the linear Turán number of the linear cycle of length $2k+1$ and the extremal number of edges in a graph of girth more than $2k-2$. Combining our result and a theorem of Collier-Cartaino, Graber and Jiang, we obtain that the linear Turán number of the linear cycle of length $2k+1$ is $Θ(n^{1+\frac{1}{k}})$ for $k = 2, 3, 4, 6$.
