Optimal pebbling of the hypercube
We prove that the optimal pebbling number of the $n$-dimensional hypercube is \[ o(Q_n)\,=\,Θ\!\left(\left(\frac43\right)^n\right). \]
$2$-Restricted Optimal Pebbling Number of Some Graphs
Let $G=(V,E)$ be a simple graph. A pebbling configuration on $G$ is a function $f:V\rightarrow \mathbb{N}\cup \{0\}$ that assigns a non-negative integer number of pebbles to each vertex. The weight of a configuration $f$ is $w(f)=\sum_{u\in V}f(u)$, the total number of pebbles. A pebbling move consists of removing two pebbles from a vertex $u$ and placing one pebble on an adjacent vertex $v$. A configuration $f$ is a $t$-restricted pebbling configuration ($t$RPC) if no vertex has more than $t$ pebbles. The $t$-restricted optimal pebbling number $π_t^*(G)$ is the minimum weight of a $t$RPC on $G$ that allows any vertex to be reached by a sequence of pebbling moves. The distinguishing number $D(G)$ is the minimum number of colors needed to label the vertices of $G$ such that the only automorphism preserving the coloring is the trivial one (i.e., the identity map). In this paper, we investigate the $2$-restricted optimal pebbling number of trees $T$ with $D(T)=2$ and radius at most $2$ and enumerate their $2$-restricted optimal pebbling configurations. Also we study the $2$-restricted optimal pebbling number of some graphs that are of importance in chemistry such as some alkanes.

More on the $2$-restricted optimal pebbling number
Let $G=(V,E)$ be a simple graph. A function $f:V\rightarrow \mathbb{N}\cup \{0\}$ is called a configuration of pebbles on the vertices of $G$ and the weight of $f$ is $w(f)=\sum_{u\in V}f(u)$ which is just the total number of pebbles assigned to vertices. A pebbling step from a vertex $u$ to one of its neighbors $v$ reduces $f(u)$ by two and increases $f(v)$ by one. A pebbling configuration $f$ is said to be solvable if for every vertex $ v $, there exists a sequence (possibly empty) of pebbling moves that results in a pebble on $v$. A pebbling configuration $f$ is a $t$-restricted pebbling configuration (abbreviated $t$RPC) if $f(v)\leq t$ for all $v\in V$. The $t$-restricted optimal pebbling number $π_t^*(G)$ is the minimum weight of a solvable $t$RPC on $G$. Chellali et.al. [Discrete Appl. Math. 221 (2017) 46-53] characterized connected graphs $G$ having small $2$-restricted optimal pebbling numbers and characterization of graphs $G$ with $π_2^*(G)=5$ stated as an open problem. In this paper, we solve this problem. We improve the upper bound of the $2$-restricted optimal pebbling number of trees of order $n$. Also, we study $2$-restricted optimal pebbling number of some grid graphs, corona and neighborhood corona of two specific graphs.

Restricted optimal pebbling is NP-hard
Consider a distribution of pebbles on a graph. A pebbling move removes two pebbles from a vertex and place one at an adjacent vertex. A vertex is reachable under a pebble distribution if it has a pebble after the application of a sequence of pebbling moves. A pebble distribution is solvable if each vertex is reachable under it. The size of a pebble distribution is the total number of pebbles. The optimal pebbling number $π^*(G)$ is the size of the smallest solvable distribution. A $t$-restricted pebble distribution places at most $t$ pebbles at each vertex. The $t$-restricted optimal pebbling number $π_t^*(G)$ is the size of the smallest solvable $t$-restricted pebble distribution. We show that deciding whether $π^*_2(G)\leq k$ is NP-complete. We prove that $π_t^*(G)=π^*(G)$ if $δ(G)\geq \frac{2|V(G)|}{3}-1$ and we show infinitely many graphs which satisfies $δ(H)\approx \frac{1}{2}|V(H)|$ but $π_t^*(H)\neqπ^*(H)$, where $δ$ denotes the minimum degree.

A new lower bound on the pebbling number of the grid
Published in Discrete Mathematics 346 (2023) • View PublicationBIB
A pebbling move on a graph consists of removing $2$ pebbles from a vertex and adding $1$ pebble to one of the neighbouring vertices. A vertex is called reachable if we can put $1$ pebble on it after a sequence of moves. The optimal pebbling number of a graph is the minimum number $m$ such that there exists a distribution of $m$ pebbles so that each vertex is reachable. For the case of a square grid $n \times m$, Győri, Katona and Papp recently showed that its optimal pebbling number is at least $\frac{2}{13}nm \approx 0.1538nm$ and at most $\frac{2}{7}nm +O(n+m) \approx 0.2857nm$. We improve the lower bound to $\frac{5092}{28593}nm +O(m+n) \approx 0.1781nm$.

Optimal pebbling of complete binary trees and a meta-Fibonacci sequence
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we present a new method for determining the optimal pebbling number of a complete binary tree. This method reveals a curious connection between the optimal pebbling numbers of complete binary trees and the Conolly-Fox sequence, a type of meta-Fibonacci sequence.

Optimal pebbling number of the square grid
A pebbling move on a graph removes two pebbles from a vertex and adds one pebble to an adjacent vertex. A vertex is reachable from a pebble distribution if it is possible to move a pebble to that vertex using pebbling moves. The optimal pebbling number $π_{opt}$ is the smallest number m needed to guarantee a pebble distribution of m pebbles from which any vertex is reachable. The optimal pebbling number of the square grid graph $P_n\square P_m$ was investigated in several papers. In this paper, we present a new method using some recent ideas to give a lower bound on $π_{opt}$. We apply this technique to prove that $π_{opt}(P_n\square P_m)\geq \frac{2}{13}nm$. Our method also gives a new proof for $π_{opt}(P_n)=π_{opt}(C_n)=\left\lceil\frac{2n}{3}\right\rceil$.
Optimal pebbling number of graphs with given minimum degree

Consider a distribution of pebbles on a connected graph $G$. A pebbling move removes two pebbles from a vertex and places one to an adjacent vertex. A vertex is reachable under a pebbling distribution if it has a pebble after the application of a sequence of pebbling moves. The optimal pebbling number $π^*(G)$ is the smallest number of pebbles which we can distribute in such a way that each vertex is reachable. It was known that the optimal pebbling number of any connected graph is at most $\frac{4n}{δ+1}$, where $δ$ is the minimum degree of the graph. We strengthen this bound by showing that equality cannot be attained and that the bound is sharp. If $\operatorname{diam}(G)\geq 3$ then we further improve the bound to $π^*(G)\leq\frac{3.75n}{δ+1}$. On the other hand, we show that for arbitrary large diameter and any $ε>0$ there are infinitely many graphs whose optimal pebbling number is bigger than $\left(\frac{8}{3}-ε\right)\frac{n}{(δ+1)}$.
Optimal pebbling and rubbling of graphs with given diameter
A pebbling move on a graph removes two pebbles from a vertex and adds one pebble to an adjacent vertex. A vertex is reachable from a pebble distribution if it is possible to move a pebble to that vertex using pebbling moves. The optimal pebbling number $π_{opt}$ is the smallest number $m$ needed to guarantee a pebble distribution of $m$ pebbles from which any vertex is reachable. A rubbling move is similar to a pebbling move, but it can remove the two pebbles from two different vertex. The optimal rubbling number $ρ_{opt}$ is defined analogously to the optimal pebbling number. In this paper we give lower bounds on both the optimal pebbling and rubbling numbers by the distance $k$ domination number. With this bound we prove that for each $k$ there is a graph $G$ with diameter $k$ such that $ρ_{opt}(G)=π_{opt}(G)=2^k$.
The Optimal Pebbling Number of Staircase Graphs
Let G be a graph with a distribution of pebbles on its vertices. A pebbling move consists of removing two pebbles from one vertex and placing one pebble on an adjacent vertex. The optimal pebbling number of G is the smallest number of pebbles which can placed on the vertices of G such that, for any vertex v of G, there is a sequence of pebbling moves resulting in at least one pebble on v. We determine the optimal pebbling number for several classes of induced subgraphs of the square grid, which we call staircase graphs.
Critical Pebbling Numbers of Graphs

We define three new pebbling parameters of a connected graph $G$, the $r$-, $g$-, and $u$-critical pebbling numbers. Together with the pebbling number, the optimal pebbling number, the number of vertices $n$ and the diameter $d$ of the graph, this yields 7 graph parameters. We determine the relationships between these parameters. We investigate properties of the $r$-critical pebbling number, and distinguish between greedy graphs, thrifty graphs, and graphs for which the $r$-critical pebbling number is $2^d$.
Optimal Pebbling in Products of Graphs
We prove a generalization of Graham's Conjecture for optimal pebbling with arbitrary sets of target distributions. We provide bounds on optimal pebbling numbers of products of complete graphs and explicitly find optimal $t$-pebbling numbers for specific such products. We obtain bounds on optimal pebbling numbers of powers of the cycle $C_5$. Finally, we present explicit distributions which provide asymptotic bounds on optimal pebbling numbers of hypercubes.
Pebbling and Optimal Pebbling in Graphs
Published in Journal of Graph Theory. Vol. 57, March 2008, pp. 215-238 • View PublicationBIB
Given a distribution of pebbles on the vertices of a graph G, a {\it pebbling move} takes two pebbles from one vertex and puts one on a neighboring vertex. The {\it pebbling number} Π(G) is the minimum k such that for every distribution of k pebbles and every vertex r, it is possible to move a pebble to r. The {\it optimal pebbling number} Π_{OPT}(G) is the minimum k such that some distribution of k pebbles permits reaching each vertex. We give short proofs of prior results on these parameters for paths, cycles, trees, and hypercubes, a new linear-time algorithm for computing Π(G) on trees, and new results on Π_{OPT}(G). If G is a connected n-vertex graph, then Π_{OPT}(G)\le\ceiling{2n/3}, with equality for paths and cycles. If \bf{G} is the family of n-vertex connected graphs with minimum degree k, then 2.4\le \max_{G\in \bf{G}} Π_{OPT}(G) \frac{k+1}{n}\le 4 when k>15 and k is a multiple of 3. Finally, Π_{OPT}(G)\le 4^tn/((k-1)^t+4^t) when G is a connected n-vertex graph with minimum degree k and girth at least 2t+1. For t=2, a more precise version of this last bound is Π_{OPT}(G)\le 16n/(k^2+17).

Optimal pebbling of paths and cycles
Distributions of pebbles to the vertices of a graph are said to be solvable when a pebble may be moved to any specified vertex using a sequence of admissible pebbling rules. The optimal pebbling number is the least number of pebbles needed to create a solvable distribution. We provide a simpler proof verifying Pachter, Snevily and Voxman's determination of the optimal pebbling number of paths, and then adapt the ideas in this proof to establish the optimal pebbling number of cycles. Finally, we prove the optimal-pebbling version of Graham's conjecture.

The Complexity of Graph Pebbling
Published • View PublicationBIB
We explore the complexity of computing the optimal pebbling number and pebbling number of a graph. We show that deciding whether the optimal pebbling number of G is at most k is NP-complete and deciding whether the pebbling number of G is at most k is Π_2-complete. Additionally, we provide a characterization of when an unordered set of pebbling moves can be ordered to form a valid sequence of pebbling moves.
