Directed distances in bipolar-oriented triangulations: exact exponents and scaling limits
We study longest and shortest directed paths in the following natural model of directed random planar maps: the uniform infinite bipolar-oriented triangulation (UIBOT), which is the local limit of uniform bipolar-oriented triangulations around a typical edge. We construct the Busemann function which measures directed distance to $\infty$ along a natural interface in the UIBOT. We show that in the case of longest (resp.\ shortest) directed paths, this Busemann function converges in the scaling limit to a $2/3$-stable Lévy process (resp.\ a $4/3$-stable Lévy process).
We also prove up-to-constants bounds for directed distances in finite bipolar-oriented triangulations sampled from a Boltzmann distribution, and for size-$n$ cells in the UIBOT. These bounds imply that in a typical subset of the UIBOT with $n$ edges, longest directed path lengths are of order $n^{3/4}$ and shortest directed path lengths are of order $n^{3/8}$. These results give the scaling dimensions for discretizations of the (hypothetical) $\sqrt{4/3}$-directed Liouville quantum gravity metrics.
The main external input in our proof is the bijection of Kenyon-Miller-Sheffield-Wilson (2015). We do not use any continuum theory. We expect that our techniques can also be applied to prove similar results for directed distances in other random planar map models and for longest increasing subsequences in pattern-avoiding permutations.
Reconstructing SLE-decorated Liouville quantum gravity surfaces from random permutons
Permutons constructed from a Liouville quantum gravity surface and a pair of space-filling Schramm-Loewner evolutions (SLEs) have been shown -- or are conjectured -- to describe the scaling limit of various natural models of random constrained permutations. We prove that, in two distinct and natural settings, these permutons uniquely determine, modulo rotation, scaling, translation and reflection, both the Liouville quantum gravity surface and the pair of space-filling SLEs used in their construction. In other words, the Liouville quantum gravity surface and the pair of space-filling SLEs can be deterministically reconstructed from the permuton.
Our results cover the cases of the skew Brownian permutons, the universal limits of pattern-avoiding permutations, and the meandric permuton, which is the conjectural permuton limit of permutations obtained from uniform meanders.
In the course of the proof, we give a detailed description of how the support of the permuton relates to the multiple points of the two space-filling SLEs.
Power-law bounds for increasing subsequences in Brownian separable permutons and homogeneous sets in Brownian cographons
The Brownian separable permutons are a one-parameter family -- indexed by $p\in(0,1)$ -- of universal limits of random constrained permutations. We show that for each $p\in (0,1)$, there are explicit constants $1/2 < α_*(p) \leq β^*(p) < 1$ such that the length of the longest increasing subsequence in a random permutation of size $n$ sampled from the Brownian separable permuton is between $n^{α_*(p) - o(1)}$ and $n^{β^*(p) + o(1)}$ with probability tending to 1 as $n\to\infty$. In the symmetric case $p=1/2$, we have $α_*(p) \approx 0.812$ and $β^*(p)\approx 0.975$. We present numerical simulations which suggest that the lower bound $α_*(p)$ is close to optimal in the whole range $p\in(0,1)$.
Our results work equally well for the closely related Brownian cographons. In this setting, we show that for each $p\in (0,1)$, the size of the largest clique (resp. independent set) in a random graph on $n$ vertices sampled from the Brownian cographon is between $n^{α_*(p) - o(1)}$ and $n^{β^*(p) + o(1)}$ (resp. $n^{α_*(1-p) - o(1)}$ and $n^{β^*(1-p) + o(1)}$) with probability tending to 1 as $n\to\infty$.
Our proofs are based on the analysis of a fragmentation process embedded in a Brownian excursion introduced by Bertoin (2002). We expect that our techniques can be extended to prove similar bounds for uniform separable permutations and uniform cographs.

A meandric system of size $n$ is the set of loops formed from two arc diagrams (non-crossing perfect matchings) on $\{1,\dots,2n\}$, one drawn above the real line and the other below the real line. A uniform random meandric system can be viewed as a random planar map decorated by a Hamiltonian path (corresponding to the real line) and a collection of loops (formed by the arcs). Based on physics heuristics and numerical evidence, we conjecture that the scaling limit of this decorated random planar map is given by an independent triple consisting of a Liouville quantum gravity (LQG) sphere with parameter $γ=\sqrt 2$, a Schramm-Loewner evolution (SLE) curve with parameter $κ=8$, and a conformal loop ensemble (CLE) with parameter $κ=6$.
We prove several rigorous results which are consistent with this conjecture. In particular, a uniform meandric system admits loops of nearly macroscopic graph-distance diameter with high probability. Furthermore, a.s., the uniform infinite meandric system with boundary has no infinite path. But, a.s., its boundary-modified version has a unique infinite path whose scaling limit is conjectured to be chordal SLE$_6$.

We study a class of random permutons which can be constructed from a pair of space-filling Schramm-Loewner evolution (SLE) curves on a Liouville quantum gravity (LQG) surface. This class includes the skew Brownian permutons introduced by Borga (2021), which describe the scaling limit of various types of random pattern-avoiding permutations. Another interesting permuton in our class is the meandric permuton, which corresponds to two independent SLE$_8$ curves on a $γ$-LQG surface with $γ= \sqrt{\frac13 \left( 17 - \sqrt{145} \right)}$. Building on work by Di Francesco, Golinelli, and Guitter (2000), we conjecture that the meandric permuton describes the scaling limit of uniform meandric permutations, i.e., the permutations induced by a simple loop in the plane which crosses a line a specified number of times.
We show that for any sequence of random permutations which converges to one of the above random permutons, the length of the longest increasing subsequence is sublinear. This proves that the length of the longest increasing subsequence is sublinear for Baxter, strong-Baxter, and semi-Baxter permutations and leads to the conjecture that the same is true for meandric permutations. We also prove that the closed support of each of the random permutons in our class has Hausdorff dimension one. Finally, we prove a re-rooting invariance property for the meandric permuton and write down a formula for its expected pattern densities in terms of LQG correlation functions (which are known explicitly) and the probability that an SLE$_8$ hits a given set of points in numerical order (which is not known explicitly). We conclude with a list of open problems.
Mating of trees for random planar maps and Liouville quantum gravity: a survey
We survey the theory and applications of mating-of-trees bijections for random planar maps and their continuum analog: the mating-of-trees theorem of Duplantier, Miller, and Sheffield (2014). The latter theorem gives an encoding of a Liouville quantum gravity (LQG) surface decorated by a Schramm-Loewner evolution (SLE) curve in terms of a pair of correlated linear Brownian motions. We assume minimal familiarity with the theory of SLE and LQG.
Mating-of-trees theory enables one to reduce problems about SLE and LQG to problems about Brownian motion and leads to deep rigorous connections between random planar maps and LQG. Applications discussed in this article include scaling limit results for various functionals of decorated random planar maps, estimates for graph distances and random walk on (not necessarily uniform) random planar maps, computations of the Hausdorff dimensions of sets associated with SLE, scaling limit results for random planar maps conformally embedded in the plane, and special symmetries for $\sqrt{8/3}$-LQG which allow one to prove its equivalence with the Brownian map.
A mating-of-trees approach for graph distances in random planar maps

We introduce a general technique for proving estimates for certain random planar maps which belong to the $γ$-Liouville quantum gravity (LQG) universality class for $γ\in (0,2)$. The family of random planar maps we consider are those which can be encoded by a two-dimensional random walk with i.i.d.\ increments via a mating-of-trees bijection, and includes the uniform infinite planar triangulation (UIPT; $γ=\sqrt{8/3}$); and planar maps weighted by the number of different spanning trees ($γ=\sqrt 2$), bipolar orientations ($γ=\sqrt{4/3}$), or Schnyder woods ($γ=1$) that can be put on the map.
Using our technique, we prove estimates for graph distances in the above family of random planar maps. In particular, we obtain non-trivial upper and lower bounds for the cardinality of a graph distance ball consistent with the Watabiki (1993) prediction for the Hausdorff dimension of $γ$-LQG and we establish the existence of an exponent for certain distances in the map.
The basic idea of our approach is to compare a given random planar map $M$ to a mated-CRT map---a random planar map constructed from a correlated two-dimensional Brownian motion---using a strong coupling (Zaitsev, 1998) of the encoding walk for $M$ and the Brownian motion used to construct the mated-CRT map. This allows us to deduce estimates for graph distances in $M$ from the estimates for graph distances in the mated-CRT map which we proved (using continuum theory) in a previous work. In the special case when $γ=\sqrt{8/3}$, we instead deduce estimates for the $\sqrt{8/3}$-mated-CRT map from known results for the UIPT.
The arguments of this paper do not directly use SLE/LQG, and can be read without any knowledge of these objects.
Random walk on random planar maps: spectral dimension, resistance, and displacement

We study simple random walk on the class of random planar maps which can be encoded by a two-dimensional random walk with i.i.d. increments or a two-dimensional Brownian motion via a "mating-of-trees" type bijection. This class includes the uniform infinite planar triangulation (UIPT), the infinite-volume limits of random planar maps weighted by the number of spanning trees, bipolar orientations, or Schnyder woods they admit, and the $γ$-mated-CRT map for $γ\in (0,2)$. For each of these maps, we obtain an upper bound for the Green's function on the diagonal, an upper bound for the effective resistance to the boundary of a metric ball, an upper bound for the return probability of the random walk to its starting point after $n$ steps, and a lower bound for the graph-distance displacement of the random walk, all of which are sharp up to polylogarithmic factors.
When combined with work of Lee (2017), our bound for the return probability shows that the spectral dimension of each of these random planar maps is a.s. equal to 2, i.e., the (quenched) probability that the simple random walk returns to its starting point after $2n$ steps is $n^{-1+o_n(1)}$. Our results also show that the amount of time that it takes a random walk to exit a metric ball is at least its volume (up to a polylogarithmic factor). In the special case of the UIPT, this implies that random walk typically travels at least $n^{1/4 - o_n(1)}$ units of graph distance in $n$ units of time. The matching upper bound for the displacement is proven by Gwynne and Hutchcroft (2018). These two works together resolve a conjecture of Benjamini and Curien (2013) in the UIPT case.
Our proofs are based on estimates for the mated-CRT map (which come from its relationship to SLE-decorated Liouville quantum gravity) and a strong coupling of the mated-CRT map with the other random planar map models.

We prove that the free Boltzmann quadrangulation with simple boundary and fixed perimeter, equipped with its graph metric, natural area measure, and the path which traces its boundary converges in the scaling limit to the free Boltzmann Brownian disk. The topology of convergence is the so-called Gromov-Hausdorff-Prokhorov-uniform (GHPU) topology, the natural analog of the Gromov-Hausdorff topology for curve-decorated metric measure spaces. From this we deduce that a random quadrangulation of the sphere decorated by a $2l$-step self-avoiding loop converges in law in the GHPU topology to the random curve-decorated metric measure space obtained by gluing together two independent Brownian disks along their boundaries.

Let $Q$ be a free Boltzmann quadrangulation with simple boundary decorated by a critical ($p=3/4$) face percolation configuration. We prove that the chordal percolation exploration path on $Q$ between two marked boundary edges converges in the scaling limit to chordal SLE$_6$ on an independent $\sqrt{8/3}$-Liouville quantum gravity disk (equivalently, a Brownian disk). The topology of convergence is the Gromov-Hausdorff-Prokhorov-uniform topology, the natural analog of the Gromov-Hausdorff topology for curve-decorated metric measure spaces. We also obtain analogous scaling limit results for face percolation on the uniform infinite half-plane quadrangulation with simple boundary, and for site percolation on a uniform triangulation with simple boundary. Our method of proof is robust and, up to certain technical steps, extends to any percolation model on a random planar map which can be explored via peeling.

We prove that the uniform infinite half-plane quadrangulation (UIHPQ), with either general or simple boundary, equipped with its graph distance, its natural area measure, and the curve which traces its boundary, converges in the scaling limit to the Brownian half-plane. The topology of convergence is given by the so-called Gromov-Hausdorff-Prokhorov-uniform (GHPU) metric on curve-decorated metric measure spaces, which is a generalization of the Gromov-Hausdorff metric whereby two such spaces $(X_1, d_1 , μ_1,η_1)$ and $(X_2, d_2 , μ_2,η_2)$ are close if they can be isometrically embedded into a common metric space in such a way that the spaces $X_1$ and $X_2$ are close in the Hausdorff distance, the measures $μ_1$ and $μ_2$ are close in the Prokhorov distance, and the curves $η_1$ and $η_2$ are close in the uniform distance.

We prove that a uniform infinite quadrangulation of the half-plane decorated by a self-avoiding walk (SAW) converges in the scaling limit to the metric gluing of two independent Brownian half-planes identified along their positive boundary rays. Combined with other work of the authors, this implies the convergence of the SAW on a random quadrangulation to SLE$_{8/3}$ on a certain $\sqrt{8/3}$-Liouville quantum gravity surface. The topology of convergence is the local Gromov-Hausdorff-Prokhorov-uniform topology, the natural generalization of the local Gromov-Hausdorff topology to curve-decorated metric measure spaces. We also prove analogous scaling limit results for uniform infinite quadrangulations of the whole plane decorated by either a one-sided or two-sided SAW. Our proof uses only the peeling procedure for random quadrangulations and some basic properties of the Brownian half-plane, so can be read without any knowledge of SLE or LQG.
