Atoms of the matching measure
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove that the matching measure of an infinite vertex-transitive connected graph has no atoms. Generalizing the results of Salez, we show that for an ergodic non-amenable unimodular random rooted graph with uniformly bounded degrees, the matching measure has only finitely many atoms. Ku and Chen proved the analogue of the Gallai-Edmonds structure theorem for non-zero roots of the matching polynomial for finite graphs. We extend their results for infinite graphs. We also show that the corresponding Gallai-Edmonds decomposition is compatible with the zero temperature monomer-dimer model.
Lee-Yang Zeros of the antiferromagnetic Ising Model
Published • View PublicationBIB
We investigate the location of zeros for the partition function of the anti-ferromagnetic Ising Model, focusing on the zeros lying on the unit circle. We give a precise characterization for the class of rooted Cayley trees, showing that the zeros are nowhere dense on the most interesting circular arcs. In contrast, we prove that when considering all graphs with a given degree bound, the zeros are dense in a circular sub-arc, implying that Cayley trees are in this sense not extremal. The proofs rely on describing the rational dynamical systems arising when considering ratios of partition functions on recursively defined trees.

On zero-free regions for the anti-ferromagnetic Potts model on bounded-degree graphs
Published in Ann. Inst. Henri Poincaré Comb. Phys. Interact. 8 (2021), no. 3, pp. 459--489 • View PublicationBIB
For a graph $G=(V,E)$, $k\in \mathbb{N}$, and a complex number $w$ the partition function of the univariate Potts model is defined as \[ {\bf Z}(G;k,w):=\sum_{φ:V\to [k]}\prod_{\substack{uv\in E \\ φ(u)=φ(v)}}w, \] where $[k]:=\{1,\ldots,k\}$. In this paper we give zero-free regions for the partition function of the anti-ferromagnetic Potts model on bounded degree graphs. In particular we show that for any $Δ\in \mathbb{N}$ and any $k\geq eΔ+1$, there exists an open set $U$ in the complex plane that contains the interval $[0,1)$ such that ${\bf Z}(G;k,w)\neq 0$ for any $w\in U$ and any graph $G$ of maximum degree at most $Δ$. (Here $e$ denotes the base of the natural logarithm.) For small values of $Δ$ we are able to give better results. As an application of our results we obtain improved bounds on $k$ for the existence of deterministic approximation algorithms for counting the number of proper $k$-colourings of graphs of small maximum degree.

Note on the zero-free region of the hard-core model
In this paper we prove a new zero-free region for the partition function of the hard-core model, that is, the independence polynomials of graphs with largest degree $Δ$. This new domain contains the half disk $$D=\left\{ λ\in \mathbb{C}\ |\ \mathrm{Re}(λ)\geq 0, |λ|\leq \frac{7}{8}\tan \left( \fracπ{2(Δ-1)}\right)\right\}.$$

Some coefficient sequences related to the descent polynomial
Published • View PublicationBIB
The descent polynomial of a finite $I\subseteq \mathbb{Z}^+$ is the polynomial $d(I,n)$, for which the evaluation at $n>\max(I)$ is the number of permutations on $n$ elements, such that $I$ is the set of indices where the permutation is descending. In this paper we will prove some conjectures concerning coefficient sequences of $d(I,n)$. As a corollary we will describe some zero-free regions for the descent polynomial.

One more remark on the adjoint polynomial
Published • View PublicationBIB
The adjoint polynomial of $G$ is \[h(G,x)=\sum_{k=1}^n(-1)^{n-k}a_k(G)x^k,\] where $a_k(G)$ denotes the number of ways one can cover all vertices of the graph $G$ by exactly $k$ disjoint cliques of $G$. In this paper we show the the adjoint polynomial of a graph $G$ is a simple transformation of the independence polynomial of another graph $\widehat{G}$. This enables us to use the rich theory of independence polynomials to study the adjoint polynomials. In particular we a give new proofs of several theorems of R. Liu and P. Csikvári.

On trees with real rooted independence polynomial
Published • View PublicationBIB
The independence polynomial of a graph $G$ is \[I(G,x)=\sum\limits_{k\ge 0}i_k(G)x^k,\] where $i_k(G)$ denotes the number of independent sets of $G$ of size $k$ (note that $i_0(G)=1$). In this paper we show a new method to prove real-rootedness of the independence polynomials of certain families of trees. In particular we will give a new proof of the real-rootedness of the independence polynomials of centipedes (Zhu's theorem), caterpillars (Wang and Zhu's theorem), and we will prove a conjecture of Galvin and Hilyard about the real-rootedness of the independence polynomial of the so-called Fibonacci trees.

Christoffel-Darboux type identities for independence polynomial
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we introduce some Christoffel-Darboux type identities for independence polynomials. As an application, we give a new proof of a theorem of M. Chudnovsky and P. Seymour, claiming that the independence polynomial of a claw-free graph has only real roots. Another application is related to a conjecture of Merrifield and Simmons.
