On the discrete Heine-Shephard problem for four lattice polygons
We study the set of square-free parts of volume polynomials associated with four planar lattice polytopes. This is motivated by the problem of describing possible pairwise intersection numbers of four curves in $(\mathbb{C}^*)^2$ with prescribed Newton polytopes and generic coefficients. It is known that for arbitrary convex bodies in $\mathbb{R}^2$, the corresponding square-free polynomials are characterized by the Plücker-type inequalities. We show that this characterization fails in the lattice setting: the interior of the space defined by the Plücker-type inequalities contains integer polynomials that are and are not realizable by lattice polytopes. This phenomenon arises from additional arithmetic constraints on the mixed areas of lattice polytopes. These constraints become apparent when we study a "discrete diagram", which maps a pair of planar lattice polytopes to their mixed area together with their lattice widths in a given direction.
Equilateral n-gons in planar integer lattices
We study the existence of equilateral polygons in planar integer lattices. Maehara showed that it's sufficient to work with rectangular lattices $Λ(m) = L[(1,0),(0,\sqrt{m})]$ with $m \equiv 3 \pmod{4}$. Building on results of Maehara and of Iino and Sakiyama, we show that for every such $m$ there exists $N$ such that for all $n \geq N$, the lattice $Λ(m)$ contains an equilateral $n$-gon. This extends previous classifications of equilateral polygons in planar lattices.
Geometric bounds for spanning tree entropy of planar lattice graphs
We prove infinitely many cases of conjectured sharp upper and lower bounds for the spanning tree entropy of any planar lattice graph. These bounds come from volumes of associated hyperbolic alternating links, right-angled hyperbolic polyhedra and hyperbolic regular ideal bipyramids. For many planar lattice graphs, we show these bounds are easy to compute and provide excellent numerical estimates for the spanning tree entropy.

For a planar integral lattice $L$, let $ν(L)$ denote the square-free part of the integer $D(L)^2$, where $D(L)$ stands for the area of a fundamental parallelogram of $L$. For each odd integer $n$ with $3 \leq n<29$, a planar lattice $L$ contains an equilateral $n$-gon if and only if $L$ is similar to an integral lattice $L'$ such that $ν(L')\equiv 3 \pmod 4$ and the largest prime factor $p$ of $ν(L')$ satisfies $p \leq n$. Moreover, such $L$ contains a convex equilateral $n$-gon, which answers a problem posed by Maehara.
Recurrence solution of monomer-polymer models on two-dimensional rectangular lattices
The problem of counting polymer coverings on the rectangular lattices is investigated. In this model, a linear rigid polymer covers $k$ adjacent lattice sites such that no two polymers occupy a common site. Those unoccupied lattice sites are considered as monomers. We prove that for a given number of polymers ($k$-mers), the number of arrangements for the polymers on two-dimensional rectangular lattices satisfies simple recurrence relations. These recurrence relations are quite general and apply for arbitrary polymer length ($k$) and the width of the lattices ($n$). The well-studied monomer-dimer problem is a special case of the monomer-polymer model when $k=2$. It is known the enumeration of monomer-dimer configurations in planar lattices is #P-complete. The recurrence relations shown here have the potential for hints for the solution of long-standing problems in this class of computational complexity.
On lattice extensions

A lattice $Λ$ is said to be an extension of a sublattice $L$ of smaller rank if $L$ is equal to the intersection of $Λ$ with the subspace spanned by $L$. The goal of this paper is to initiate a systematic study of the geometry of lattice extensions. We start by proving the existence of a small-determinant extension of a given lattice, and then look at successive minima and covering radius. To this end, we investigate extensions (within an ambient lattice) preserving the successive minima of the given lattice, as well as extensions preserving the covering radius. We also exhibit some interesting arithmetic properties of deep holes of planar lattices.
Characterization of coincidence site lattices of oblique planar lattices
Coincidence site lattices of oblique planar lattices are algebraically characterized using as basic tool the Cartan-Dieudonné theorem, that is, the decomposition of an orthogonal transformation as a product of reflections. The case of rectangular lattices is worked out in detail. We use the rectangular lattices for obtain the characterization of the corresponding obliques.

We calculate the number of open walks of fixed length and algebraic area on a square planar lattice by an extension of the operator method used for the enumeration of closed walks. The open walk area is defined by closing the walks with a straight line across their endpoints and can assume half-integer values in lattice cell units. We also derive the length and area counting of walks with endpoints on specific straight lines and outline an approach for dealing with walks with fully fixed endpoints.
Atom-generated planar lattices
In this note, we discuss planar lattices generated by their atoms. We prove that if $L$ is a planar lattice generated by $n$ atoms, then both the left and the right boundaries of $L$ have at most $n+1$ elements.
On the other hand, $L$ can be arbitrarily large. For every $k > 1$, we construct a planar lattice $L$ generated by $4$ atoms such that $L$ has more than $k$ elements.

A Schreier decoration is a combinatorial coding of an action of the free group $F_d$ on the vertex set of a $2d$-regular graph. We investigate whether a Schreier decoration exists on various countably infinite transitive graphs as a factor of iid.
We show that $\mathbb{Z}^d,d\geq3$, the square lattice and also the three other Archimedean lattices of even degree have finitary-factor-of-iid Schreier decorations, and exhibit examples of transitive graphs of arbitrary even degree in which obtaining such a decoration as a factor of iid is impossible.
We also prove that symmetrical planar lattices with all degrees even have a factor of iid balanced orientation, meaning the indegree of every vertex is equal to its outdegree, and demonstrate that the property of having a factor-of-iid balanced orientation is not invariant under quasi-isometry.

A subset of vertices of a graph is minimal if, within all subsets of the same size, its vertex boundary is minimal. We give a complete, geometric characterization of minimal sets for the planar integer lattice X. Our characterization elucidates the structure of all minimal sets, and we are able to use it to obtain several applications. We characterize uniquely minimal sets of X: those which are congruent to any other minimal set of the same size. We also classify all efficient sets of X: those that have maximal size amongst all such sets with a fixed vertex boundary. We define and investigate the graph G of minimal sets whose vertices are congruence classes of minimal sets of X and whose edges connect vertices which can be represented by minimal sets that differ by exactly one vertex. We prove that G has exactly one infinite component, has infinitely many isolated vertices and has bounded components of arbitrarily large size. Finally, we show that all minimal sets, except one, are connected.

We show that 4-connected plane triangulations can be redrawn such that edges are represented by straight segments and the vertices are covered by a set of at most $\sqrt{2n}$ lines each of them horizontal or vertical. The same holds for all subgraphs of such triangulations. The proof is based on a corresponding result for diagrams of planar lattices which makes use of orthogonal chain and antichain families.

We construct a family of infinite-dimensional positive sub-coalgebras within the Grothendieck ring of Hecke algebras, when viewed as a Hopf algebra with respect to the induction and restriction functor. These sub-coalgebras have as structure constants the 3-point genus zero Gromov-Witten invariants of Grassmannians and are spanned by what we call cylindric Hecke characters, a particular set of virtual characters for whose computation we give several explicit combinatorial formulae. One of these expressions is a generalisation of Ram's formula for irreducible Hecke characters and uses cylindric broken rim hook tableaux. We show that the latter are in bijection with so-called `ice configurations' on a cylindrical square lattice, which define the asymmetric six-vertex model in statistical mechanics. A key ingredient of our construction is an extension of the boson-fermion correspondence to Hecke algebras and employing the latter we find new expressions for Jing's vertex operators of Hall-Littlewood functions in terms of the six-vertex transfer matrices on the infinite planar lattice.
The distinguishing number and distinguishing chromatic number for posets
In this paper we introduce the concepts of the distinguishing number and the distinguishing chromatic number of a poset. For a distributive lattice $L$ and its set $Q_L$ of join-irreducibles, we use classic lattice theory to show that any linear extension of $Q_L$ generates a distinguishing 2-coloring of $L$. We prove general upper bounds for the distinguishing chromatic number and particular upper bounds for the Boolean lattice and for divisibility lattices. In addition, we show that the distinguishing number of any twin-free Cohen-Macaulay planar lattice is at most 2.

Let $c_n = c_n(d)$ denote the number of self-avoiding walks of length $n$ starting at the origin in the Euclidean nearest-neighbour lattice $\mathbb{Z}^d$. Let $μ= \lim_n c_n^{1/n}$ denote the connective constant of $\mathbb{Z}^d$. In 1962, Hammersley and Welsh [HW62] proved that, for each $d \geq 2$, there exists a constant $C > 0$ such that $c_n \leq \exp(C n^{1/2}) μ^n$ for all $n \in \mathbb{N}$. While it is anticipated that $c_n μ^{-n}$ has a power-law growth in $n$, the best known upper bound in dimension two has remained of the form $n^{1/2}$ inside the exponential.
The natural first improvement to demand for a given planar lattice is a bound of the form $c_n \leq \exp (C n^{1/2 - ε})μ^n$, where $μ$ denotes the connective constant of the lattice in question. We derive a bound of this form for two such lattices, for an explicit choice of $ε> 0$ in each case. For the hexagonal lattice $\mathbb{H}$, the bound is proved for all $n \in \mathbb{N}$; while for the Euclidean lattice $\mathbb{Z}^2$, it is proved for a set of $n \in \mathbb{N}$ of limit supremum density equal to one.
A power-law upper bound on $c_n μ^{-n}$ for $\mathbb{H}$ is also proved, contingent on a non-quantitative assertion concerning this lattice's connective constant.

We show by construction that every rhombic lattice $Γ$ in $\mathbb{R}^{2}$ has a fundamental domain whose symmetry group contains the point group of $Γ$ as a subgroup of index $2$. This solves the last open case of a question raised in [3] on fundamental domains for planar lattices whose symmetry groups properly contain the point groups of the lattices.

In this paper we study the tensor powers of the standard representation of the quantum super-algebra $U_q(sl(2|1)$, focusing on the rings of its algebra endomorphisms, called centraliser algebras and denoted by $LG_n$. Their dimensions were conjectured by I. Marin and E. Wagner \cite{MW}. We prove this conjecture, describing the intertwiner spaces from a semi-simple decomposition as sets consisting of certain paths in a planar lattice with integer coordinates. Using this model, we present a matrix unit basis for the centraliser algebra $LG_n$, by means of closed curves in the plane, which are included in the lattice with integer coordinates.

An asymptotic formula is presented for the number of planar lattice convex polygonal lines joining the origin to a distant point of the diagonal. The formula involves the non-trivial zeros of the zeta function and leads to a necessary and sufficient condition for the Riemann Hypothesis to hold.

We address the enumeration of q-coloured planar maps counted bythe number of edges and the number of monochromatic edges. We prove that the associated generating function is differentially algebraic, that is, satisfies a non-trivial polynomial differential equation withrespect to the edge variable. We give explicitly a differential systemthat characterizes this series. We then prove a similar result for planar triangulations, thus generalizing a result of Tutte dealing with their proper q-colourings. Instatistical physics terms, we solvethe q-state Potts model on random planar lattices. This work follows a first paper by the same authors, where the generating functionwas proved to be algebraic for certain values of q,including q=1, 2 and 3. It isknown to be transcendental in general. In contrast, our differential system holds for an indeterminate q.For certain special cases of combinatorial interest (four colours; properq-colourings; maps equipped with a spanning forest), we derive from this system, in the case of triangulations, an explicit differential equation of order 2 defining the generating function. For general planar maps, we also obtain a differential equation of order 3 for the four-colour case and for the self-dual Potts model.

Let $L$ be a distributive lattice and $R(L)$ the associated Hibi ring. We compute $\reg R(L)$ when $L$ is a planar lattice and give a lower bound for $\reg R(L)$ when $L$ is non-planar, in terms of the combinatorial data of $L.$ As a consequence, we characterize the distributive lattices $L$ for which the associated Hibi ring has a linear resolution.
