Hall-Littlewood functions in noncommuting variables
In 2022 Aliniaeifard, Li, and van Willigenburg defined Schur functions in the algebra of symmetric functions in noncommuting variables (NCSym), answering an open question posed by Rosas and Sagan in 2004. These Schur functions are not monomial positive, since they are defined via a noncommutative analogue of the Jacobi-Trudi determinant.
We introduce Hall-Littlewood functions ${\bf P}_π({\bf x};t)$ indexed by set partitions $π$ in noncommuting variables ${\bf x}=({\bf x}_1,{\bf x}_2,\ldots)$, and define Schur functions in noncommuting variables to be ${\bf s}_π({\bf x})={\bf P}_π({\bf x};0)$. We prove that the set of Hall-Littlewood functions $\{{\bf P}_π({\bf x};t)\}$ for all set partitions $π$ of $[n]$ forms a $\mathbb{Q}[t]$-basis of NCSym of homogeneous degree $n$, and that this basis is invariant under any permutation acting on set partitions. These Hall-Littlewood functions in NCSym map to classical Hall-Littlewood functions under commutation, up to a scalar factor.
We also show that the Hall-Littlewood functions ${\bf P}_π({\bf x};t)$ naturally refine the lifted Hall-Littlewood functions in NCSym. Specifically, the Schur functions ${\bf s}_π({\bf x})$ are monomial positive and refine the lifted Schur function introduced by Rosas and Sagan. Moreover, we introduce a star product of two polynomials in NCSym and develop the star-multiplication rule for a lifted and a non-lifted Hall-Littlewood functions in NCSym. This rule is a noncommutative analogue of the product rule for two Hall-Littlewood functions and, in particular, of the Littlewood-Richardson rule. Finally, our approach extends to the algebra of quasisymmetric functions in noncommuting variables (NCQSym) indexed by set compositions.
Constructing Hall-Littlewood Functions via a Deformation of the Bernstein Operator
The Bernstein operator $\mathbf{B}_n$ acts on a Schur function $S_λ$ by appending a part to the index, i.e., $\mathbf{B}_n S_λ=S_{(n,λ)}$. This provides a method of constructing the vertex operator representation of Schur functions since its homogeneous components are essentially just these Bernstein operators. Meanwhile, the Hall-Littlewood functions are an important generalization of the Schur functions, and they also have a vertex operator representation due to Jing. In this paper, we construct a $t$-analogue of the Bernstein operator, which allows for an explicit construction of the Jing operator. We show that the usual involution $ω$ is fundamental to this construction, revealing further combinatorial structure. As an application, we use this vertex operator to prove stability of certain structure coefficients, including the Hall polynomials.
Counting $\mathbb F_q$-points of orbital varieties in ad-nilpotent ideals of type $A_n$
Let $\mathfrak b_n(\mathbb F_q)$ denote the Lie algebra of upper triangular $n \times n$ matrices over $\mathbb F_q$, and let $\mathfrak u_n(\mathbb F_q)$ be the subalgebra of strictly upper triangular matrices. For every $\mathfrak b_n(\mathbb F_q)$-stable ideal $\mathfrak a \subseteq \mathfrak u_n(\mathbb F_q)$ and partition $μ$ of $n$, we give an explicit formula for the number of elements in $\mathfrak a$ of Jordan type $μ$. Up to a power of $q$, the number of points is given by the Hall scalar product of a modified Hall-Littlewood function indexed by $μ$ and a chromatic quasisymmetric function associated to $\mathfrak a$.
In the special case $\mathfrak a = \mathfrak u_Λ(\mathbb F_q)$, the nilradical of the standard parabolic subalgebra of $\mathfrak{gl}_n(\mathbb F_q)$ corresponding to a composition $Λ$ of $n$, our formula specializes to a result of Karp and Thomas: up to a polynomial in $q$, the number of elements in $\mathfrak u_Λ(\mathbb F_q)$ of Jordan type $μ$ equals the coefficient of $\mathbf x^Λ$ in the specialization of the dual Macdonald symmetric function $\mathrm Q_{μ'}(\mathbf x; q^{-1}, t)$ at $t = 0$. We give a new and shorter proof using a parabolic version of Borodin's division algorithm.
We present four applications: (1) a formula for the number of points on a nilpotent Hessenberg variety; (2) a derivation of Kirillov's recurrence for counting nilpotent matrices of fixed Jordan type; (3) a formula for the number of $X \in \mathfrak u_Λ(\mathbb F_q)$ with $X^2 = 0$, yielding a new proof of the Kirillov-Melnikov-Ekhad-Zeilberger formula via two-row Macdonald polynomials; (4) a formula for the number of double cosets $\mathsf U_1 \backslash \mathsf{GL}_n(\mathbb F_q) / \mathsf U_2$, where $\mathsf U_1$ and $\mathsf U_2$ are unipotent subgroups from $\mathfrak b_n(\mathbb F_q)$-stable ideals.
Noncommutative chromatic quasi-symmetric functions, Macdonald polynomials, and the Yang-Baxter equation
As shown in our paper [JCTA 177 (2021), Paper No. 105305], the chromatic quasi-symmetric function of Shareshian-Wachs can be lifted to ${\bf WQSym}$, the algebra of quasi-symmetric functions in noncommuting variables. We investigate here its behaviour with respect to classical transformations of alphabets and propose a noncommutative analogue of Macdonald polynomials compatible with a noncommutative version of the Haglund-Wilson formula. We also introduce a multi-$t$ version of these noncommutative analogues. For rectangular partitions, their commutative images at $q=0$ appear to coincide with the multi-$t$ Hall-Littlewood functions introduced in [Lett. Math. Phys. 35 (1995), 359]. This leads us to conjecture that for rectangular partitions, multi-$t$ Macdonald polynomials are obtained as equivariant traces of certain Yang-Baxter elements of Hecke algebras. We also conjecture that all (ordinary) Macdonald polynomials can be obtained in this way. We conclude with some remarks relating various aspects of quasi-symmetric chromatic functions to calculations in Hecke algebras. In particular, we show that all modular relations are given by the product formula of the Kazhdan-Lusztig basis.
Equating Inv-Quinv formulas for the $q$-Whittaker and modified Hall-Littlewood functions
We explain the equality between the two sets of formulas for $q$-Whittaker functions and modified Hall-Littlewood functions obtained by Haglund, Haiman and Loehr - the Inv formula and Ayyer, Mandelshtam and Martin - the Quinv formula by use of weighted path symmetric functions introduced by Carlsson and Mellit.

As a spin analog of the plethystic Murnaghan-Nakayama rule for Schur functions, the plethystic Murnaghan-Nakayama rule for Schur $Q$-functions is established with the help of the vertex operator realization. This generalizes both the Murnaghan-Nakayama rule and the Pieri rule for Schur $Q$-functions. A plethystic Murnaghan-Nakayama rule for Hall-Littlewood functions is also investigated.
Discovering product and coproduct Rules for Bases of ${\textsf {QSym}}_F$ through Supercharacters
In this paper, we establish product and coproduct rules for three bases of the Hopf algebra $\textsf{QSym}_F$ of quasisymmetric functions over $F$, with $F$ being either $\mathbb{C}(q,t)$ or $\mathbb{C}(q)$. These results are derived through the categorizations of $\textsf{QSym}_{\mathbb{C}}$ obtained by utilizing the normal lattice supercharacter theories. Firstly, we deal with a basis $\{\mathcal{D}_α(q,t) \mid α\in \textsf{Comp}\}$ of $\textsf{QSym}_{\mathbb{C}(q,t)}$, where $\textsf{Comp}$ denotes the set of all compositions. This basis is obtained from the direct sum of specific supercharacter function spaces and consists of superclass identifier functions. Upon appropriate specializations of $q$ and $t$, it yields notable bases of $\textsf{QSym}_{\mathbb{C}}$ and $\textsf{QSym}_{\mathbb{C}(q)}$, including enriched $q$-monomial quasisymmetric functions introduced by Grinberg and Vassilieva. Secondly, we deal with the basis $\{G_α(q) \mid α\in \textsf{Comp}\}$ of $\textsf{QSym}_{\mathbb{C}(q)}$, where $G_α(q)$ represents the quasisymmetric Hall-Littlewood function introduced by Hivert. Our product rule is new, whereas our coproduct rule turns out to be equivalent to the existing coproduct rule of Hivert. Finally, we consider a basis $\{M_α(q) \mid α\in \textsf{Comp}\}$ of $\textsf{QSym}_{\mathbb{C}(q)}$, where $M_α(q)$ is a $q$-analogue of the monomial quasisymmetric function.

We introduce a new family of operators as multi-parameter deformation of the one-row Macdonald polynomials. The matrix coefficients of these operators acting on the space of symmetric functions with rational coefficients in two parameters $q,t$ (denoted by $Λ[q,t]$) are computed by assigning some values to skew Macdonald polynomials in $λ$-ring notation. The new rule is utilized to provide new iterative formulas and also recover various existing formulas in a unified manner. Specifically the following applications are discussed: (i) A $(q,t)$-Murnaghan-Nakayama rule for Macdonald functions is given as a generalization of the $q$-Murnaghan-Nakayama rule; (ii) An iterative formula for the $(q,t)$-Green polynomial is deduced; (iii) A simple proof of the Murnaghan-Nakayama rule for the Hecke algebra and the Hecke-Clifford algebra is offered; (iv) A combinatorial inversion of the Pieri rule for Hall-Littlewood functions is derived with the help of the vertex operator realization of the Hall-Littlewood functions; (v) Two iterative formulae for the $(q,t)$-Kostka polynomials $K_{λμ}(q,t)$ are obtained from the dual version of our multiparametric Murnaghan-Nakayama rule, one of which yields an explicit formula for arbitrary $λ$ and $μ$ in terms of the generalized $(q, t)$-binomial coefficient introduced independently by Lassalle and Okounkov.

In this paper, we present a vertex operator approach to construct and compute all complex irreducible characters of the general linear group $\GL_n(\mathbb F_q)$. Green's theory of $\GL_n(\mathbb F_q)$ is recovered and enhanced under the realization of the Grothendieck ring of representations $R_G=\bigoplus_{n\geq 0}R(\GL_n(\mathbb F_q))$ as two isomorphic Fock spaces associated to two infinite-dimensional $F$-equivariant Heisenberg Lie algebras $\widehat{\mathfrak{h}}_{\hat{\overline{\mathbb F}}_q}$ and $\widehat{\mathfrak{h}}_{\overline{\mathbb F}_q}$, where $F$ is the Frobenius automorphism of the algebraically closed field $\overline{\mathbb F}_q$. Under this picture, the irreducible characters are realized by the Bernstein vertex operators for Schur functions, the characteristic functions of the conjugacy classes are realized by the vertex operators for the Hall-Littlewood functions, and the character table is completely given by matrix coefficients of vertex operators of these two types. One of the features of the current approach is a simpler identification of the Fock space $R_G$ as the Hall algebra of symmetric functions via vertex operator calculus, and another is that we are able to compute in general the character table, where Green's degree formula is demonstrated as an example.

We study the $Q$-Kostka polynomials $L_{λμ}(t)$ by the vertex operator realization of the $Q$-Hall-Littlewood functions $G_λ(x;t)$ and derive new formulae for $L_{λμ}(t)$. In particular, we have established stability property for the Q-Kostka polynomials. We also introduce spin Green polynomials $Y^λ_μ(t)$ as both an analogue of the Green polynomials and deformation of the spin irreducible characters of $\mathfrak S_n$. Iterative formulas of the spin Green polynomials are given and some favorable properties parallel to the Green polynomials are obtained. Tables of $Y^λ_μ(t)$ are included for $n\leq7.$

The $q$-Whittaker function $W_λ(\mathbf{x};q)$ associated to a partition $λ$ is a $q$-analogue of the Schur function $s_λ(\mathbf{x})$, and is defined as the $t=0$ specialization of the Macdonald polynomial $P_λ(\mathbf{x};q,t)$. We show combinatorially how to expand $W_λ(\mathbf{x};q)$ in terms of partial flags compatible with a nilpotent endomorphism over the finite field of size $1/q$. This yields an expression analogous to a well-known formula for the Hall-Littlewood functions. We show that considering pairs of partial flags and taking Jordan forms leads to a probabilistic bijection between nonnegative-integer matrices and pairs of semistandard tableaux of the same shape, proving the Cauchy identity for $q$-Whittaker functions. We call our probabilistic bijection the $q$-Burge correspondence, and prove that in the limit as $q\to 0$, we recover a description of the classical Burge correspondence (also known as column RSK) due to Rosso (2012). A key step in the proof is the enumeration of an arbitrary double coset of $\text{GL}_n$ modulo two parabolic subgroups, which we find to be of independent interest. As an application, we use the $q$-Burge correspondence to count isomorphism classes of certain modules over the preprojective algebra of a type $A$ quiver (i.e. a path), refined according to their socle filtrations. This develops a connection between the combinatorics of symmetric functions and the representation theory of preprojective algebras.

We show that the $\imath$Hall algebra of the Jordan quiver is a polynomial ring in infinitely many generators and obtain transition relations among several generating sets. We establish a ring isomorphism from this $\imath$Hall algebra to the ring of symmetric functions in two parameters $t, θ$, which maps the $\imath$Hall basis to a class of (modified) inhomogeneous Hall-Littlewood ($\imath$HL) functions. The (modified) $\imath$HL functions admit a formulation via raising and lowering operators. We formulate and prove Pieri rules for (modified) $\imath$HL functions. The modified $\imath$HL functions specialize at $θ=0$ to the modified HL functions; they specialize at $θ=1$ to the deformed universal characters of type C, which further specialize at $(t=0, θ=1)$ to the universal characters of type C.

An iterative formula for the Green polynomial is given using the vertex operator realization of the Hall-Littlewood function. Based on this, (1) a general combinatorial formula of the Green polynomial is given; (2) several compact formulas are given for Green's polynomials associated with upper partitions of length $\leq 3$ and the diagonal lengths $\leq 3$; (3) a Murnaghan-Nakayama type formula for the Green polynomial is obtained; and (4) an iterative formula is derived for the bitrace of the finite general linear group $G$ and the Iwahori-Hecke algebra of type $A$ on the permutation module of $G$ by its Borel subgroup.

We construct a family of infinite-dimensional positive sub-coalgebras within the Grothendieck ring of Hecke algebras, when viewed as a Hopf algebra with respect to the induction and restriction functor. These sub-coalgebras have as structure constants the 3-point genus zero Gromov-Witten invariants of Grassmannians and are spanned by what we call cylindric Hecke characters, a particular set of virtual characters for whose computation we give several explicit combinatorial formulae. One of these expressions is a generalisation of Ram's formula for irreducible Hecke characters and uses cylindric broken rim hook tableaux. We show that the latter are in bijection with so-called `ice configurations' on a cylindrical square lattice, which define the asymmetric six-vertex model in statistical mechanics. A key ingredient of our construction is an extension of the boson-fermion correspondence to Hecke algebras and employing the latter we find new expressions for Jing's vertex operators of Hall-Littlewood functions in terms of the six-vertex transfer matrices on the infinite planar lattice.
Algebraic formulas for the structure constants in symmetric functions
Littlewood-Richardson rule gives the decomposition formula for the multiplication of two Schur functions, while the decomposition formula for the multiplication of two Hall-Littlewood functions or two universal characters is also given by the combinatorial method. In this paper, using the vertex operator realizations of these symmetric functions, we construct the algebraic forms of these decomposition formulas.

We study the interpolation Macdonald functions, remarkable inhomogeneous generalizations of Macdonald functions, and a sequence $A^1, A^2, \ldots$ of commuting operators that are diagonalized by them. Such a sequence of operators arises in the projective limit of finite families of commuting q-difference operators studied by Okounkov, Knop and Sahi. The main theorem is an explicit formula for the operators $A^k$. Our formula involves the family of Hall-Littlewood functions and a new family of inhomogeneous Hall-Littlewood functions, for which we give an explicit construction and identify as a degeneration of the interpolation Macdonald functions in the regime $q \rightarrow 0$. This article is inspired by the recent papers of Nazarov-Sklyanin on Macdonald and Sekiguchi-Debiard operators, and our main theorem is an extension of their results.

For any triple $(i,a,μ)$ consisting of a vertex $i$ in a quiver $Q$, a positive integer $a$, and a dominant $GL_a$-weight $μ$, we define a quiver current $H^{(i,a)}_μ$ acting on the tensor power $Λ^Q$ of symmetric functions over the vertices of $Q$. These provide a quiver generalization of parabolic Garsia-Jing creation operators in the theory of Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions. For a triple $(\mathbf{i},\mathbf{a},μ(\bullet))$ of sequences of such data, we define the quiver Hall-Littlewood function $H^{\mathbf{i},\mathbf{a}}_{μ(\bullet)}$ as the result of acting on $1\inΛ^Q$ by the corresponding sequence of quiver currents. The quiver Kostka-Shoji polynomials are the expansion coefficients of $H^{\mathbf{i},\mathbf{a}}_{μ(\bullet)}$ in the tensor Schur basis. These polynomials include the Kostka-Foulkes polynomials and parabolic Kostka polynomials (Jordan quiver) and the Kostka-Shoji polynomials (cyclic quiver) as special cases.
We show that the quiver Kostka-Shoji polynomials are graded multiplicities in the equivariant Euler characteristic of a vector bundle on Lusztig's convolution diagram determined by the sequences $\mathbf{i},\mathbf{a}$. For certain compositions of currents we conjecture higher cohomology vanishing of the associated vector bundle on Lusztig's convolution diagram. For quivers with no branching we propose an explicit positive formula for the quiver Kostka-Shoji polynomials in terms of catabolizable multitableaux.
We also relate our constructions to $K$-theoretic Hall algebras, by realizing the quiver Kostka-Shoji polynomials as natural structure constants and showing that the quiver currents provide a symmetric function lifting of the corresponding shuffle product. In the case of a cyclic quiver, we explain how the quiver currents arise in Saito's vertex representation of the quantum toroidal algebra of type $\mathfrak{sl}_r$.

We present a new combinatorial formula for Hall-Littlewood functions associated with the affine root system of type $\tilde A_{n-1}$, i.e. corresponding to the affine Lie algebra $\hat{\mathfrak{sl}}_n$. Our formula has the form of a sum over the elements of a basis constructed by Feigin, Jimbo, Loktev, Miwa and Mukhin in the corresponding irreducible representation.
Our formula can be viewed as a weighted sum of exponentials of integer points in a certain infinite-dimensional convex polyhedron. We derive a weighted version of Brion's theorem and then apply it to our polyhedron to prove the formula.

We compute generating functions for the sum of the real-valued character degrees of the finite general linear and unitary groups, through symmetric function computations. For the finite general linear group, we get a new combinatorial proof that every real-valued character has Frobenius-Schur indicator 1, and we obtain some q-series identities. For the finite unitary group, we expand the generating function in terms of values of Hall-Littlewood functions, and we obtain combinatorial expressions for the character degree sums of real-valued characters with Frobenius-Schur indicator 1 or -1.
