Rook characters as symmetric functions
We give several characterizations of an inhomogeneous basis of the ring of symmetric functions whose evaluations are the character values of the irreducible representations of the rook monoid (symmetric inverse semigroup). Using Schur--Weyl duality, we show that the transition coefficients of this basis with the power symmetric basis are the characters of the propagating partition algebra (dual symmetric inverse monoid algebra). In addition, the structure coefficients of this basis are equal to the coefficients in the smash (or Heisenberg) product of Schur functions.
Unbalanced distance-biregular graphs with girth deficiency two
Let $Γ=(V,E)$ be a distance-biregular graph with even diameter $d$ and girth $2d-2$. On the edge-set $E$ we define relations that form an association scheme; this is done by considering the linear span of the corresponding adjacency matrices, and, by means of intersection diagrams, we prove that this is an algebra. Furthermore, we describe all the irreducible representations of this algebra, and, by considering the multiplicities of the 2-dimensional ones, we show that there are no such distance-biregular graphs with $28\le d\le 46$ and $d\ge 52$.
Diagrammatic Okada monoid and cellularity of the Okada algebra
It is well known that the Young lattice is the Bratelli diagram of the symmetric groups, expressing how irreducible representations restrict from $\mathfrak{S}_{N}$ to $\mathfrak{S}_{N-1}$. In 1975, Stanley discovered a similar lattice called the Young-Fibonacci lattice which was identified as the Bratelli diagram of a family of algebras $\{\mathbf{O}_N(X,Y)\}_{N \geq 0}$ by Okada in 1994.
In this paper, we first realize the Okada algebra $\mathbf{O}_N(X,Y)$ and the associated monoid $\mathbf{O}_N$ using a labelled version of non-crossing arc-diagrams appearing in the description of the Temperley-Lieb algebra and Jones monoid. We establish, for general parameters $(X,Y)$, that the dimension of the Okada algebra $\mathbf{O}_N(X,Y)$ is $N!$, noting that Okada proved this result only in the semisimple case. We interpret a natural bijection between permutations and labelled arc-diagrams as an incarnation of Fomin's version of the Robinson-Schensted correspondence associated to the Young-Fibonacci lattice. The arc-diagram formalism allow us to probe the structure of the Okada monoid and algebra. In particular we prove that the Okada monoid is a regular, aperiodic $*$-monoid and we describe its Green relations and order.
These results allow us to construct a cellular basis of the Okada algebra and to show that $\{\mathbf{O}_N(X,Y)\}_{N \geq 0}$ forms a coherent tower of cellular algebras in the sense of Goodman and Graber. We present some conjectures expressing the Gram determinant of the invariant bilinear form attached to each cell module in terms of Okada's clone Schur functions. We conclude the paper by presenting two follow-up, ongoing projects along with a series of questions pushing further the analogy between the symmetric groups and the Okada algebras.
Kashiwara--Nakashima tableaux, Gelfand--Tsetlin patterns, and quantum symmetric pairs
Kashiwara--Nakashima tableaux and Gelfand--Tsetlin patterns of orthogonal type are famous as combinatorial models of the finite-dimensional irreducible representations of the special orthogonal Lie algebras $\mathfrak{so}_N$. The former is constructed based on the representation theory of quantum groups, especially the theory of crystals, while the latter based on the branching rule for $(\mathfrak{so}_N,\mathfrak{so}_{N-1})$. In the present paper, we construct a natural bijection between them by means of the representation theory of quantum symmetric pairs corresponding to $(\mathfrak{so}_N,\mathfrak{so}_{N-1})$.
A combinatorial rule for $GL$-multiplicities of $A_n$-quiver loci
We give the first positive combinatorial rule for the multiplicities of irreducible $GL$-representations in the coordinate rings of type $A$ quiver orbit closures, valid for every orientation of the quiver. Previously, for the special case of varieties of complexes, work of De Concini--Strickland in the early 1980s gave an implicit description of these multiplicities. The combinatorial objects in our rule carry a crystal structure whose highest-weight elements compute these multiplicities.
Image of Regular Unipotent under a Representation of $\mathrm{GL}_3(\mathbb{C})$
We study the image of a regular unipotent element under any finite-dimensional irreducible polynomial representations of $\mathrm{GL}_3(\mathbb{C})$. This problem is equivalent to decomposing certain compositions of irreducible representations as $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{C})$-modules. We give an explicit decomposition of this finding, its Jordan decomposition.
Homology of Vietoris-Rips complexes of hypercube graphs via group actions
The Vietoris-Rips complex of a metric space is the simplicial complex whose faces are the subsets of points with pairwise distance bounded above by a given scale $r$. In this paper, we study Vietoris-Rips complexes on the vertex set of the $n$-dimensional hypercube equipped with the Hamming distance. These complexes are stable under the action of the automorphism group of the hypercube graph, also known as the hyperoctahedral group, which therefore acts on their homology groups. Our results completely describe the decomposition of these homology groups into irreducible representations of the hyperoctahedral group at scales $r\leqslant 3$ and $r=n-1$.
On rational representations and rational group algebra of $\operatorname{GL}_2(q)$
In this article, we study rational representations of $G=\operatorname{GL}_2(q)$, where $q$ is a prime power. Let $ρ$ be an irreducible representation of $G$ over $\mathbb{Q}$. Then $ρ$ affords the character \[ Ω(χ)=m_{\mathbb{Q}}(χ)\sum_{σ\in\operatorname{Gal}(\mathbb{Q}(χ)/\mathbb{Q})}χ^σ, \] for some irreducible complex character $χ$ of $G$, where $m_{\mathbb{Q}}(χ)$ denotes the Schur index of $χ$ over $\mathbb{Q}$, with the converse also holding. We obtain a combinatorial description for the counting of inequivalent irreducible $\mathbb{Q}$-representations of $G$ of distinct degrees. Furthermore, we present a method to construct an irreducible rational matrix representation $ρ$ of $G$ affording the character $Ω(χ)$, where $χ$ is an irreducible complex character of $G$ arising from parabolic induction. Finally, using the results from the rational representations of $G$, we derive an explicit combinatorial formula, depending only on $q$, for the Wedderburn decomposition of $\mathbb{Q}G$.
On the maximal dimension of an irreducible representation of the symmetric group
We prove that the maximal dimension $d_N$ of an irreducible representation of the symmetric group $S_N$ satisfies
$$d_N=\sqrt{N!} \, e^{-(\mathfrak{d}+o(1))\sqrt{N} }, \quad N\to \infty,$$
for some constant $\mathfrak{d}>0$. This answers a question raised by Vershik--Kerov in 1985.
Complex Representations of Groups and Involutions of its Automorphisms
In this work, we establish a relationship between the sum of irreducible character degrees and the number of twisted involutions associated with the automorphisms of a finite group. We develop algorithmic frameworks for evaluating these quantities in the context of inner automorphisms and the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$. As an application, we provide a criterion for identifying groups that possess complex (non-real) irreducible representations and explore the structural consequences arising from these results.
The (n-2,2)-Spectrum of a Graph
We study a representation-theoretic refinement of the ordinary Laplacian spectrum of a graph. Given a graph $G$ on $n$ vertices, one may associate to it the element \[ X_G=\sum_{ij\in E(G)} (ij)\in \C[S_n]. \] The action of $X_G$ in irreducible representations of $S_n$ produces spectral invariants of graphs. The standard representation $(n-1,1)$ recovers the ordinary graph Laplacian spectrum, up to the elementary affine change $X_G=mI-L_G$, where $m=|E(G)|$. The next component, $(n-2,2)$, gives the first representation-theoretic correction. We give an explicit edge-space model for this component, derive a concrete coordinate formula for the induced operator, give a conceptual formula for all trace moments, specialize it to trees as universal linear combinations of support-forest counts, and then compute the first three moments explicitly. The third moment is expressed in terms of three-edge subgraph counts. We also introduce a weighted trace polynomial and prove that this weighted refinement already reconstructs every tree from the second moment, except for a single exceptional value of $n$ where the fourth moment suffices. Finally we discuss the relation with the invariant-theoretic approach of Thiéry \cite{Thiery} and formulate a more explicit support-forest-profile conjecture for the unweighted graph isomorphism problem for trees.
Kazhdan-Lusztig Basis and Optimization
We describe a conjectural approach to obtaining canonical bases of the Hecke algebra at $q=1$ via continuous quadratic optimization. We focus on Specht modules $S^λ$ and proper cones inside $S^λ$ that are invariant under the action of $1+s$ for all simple reflections $s\in S$. We show that there are unique minimal and maximal cones invariant under all $1+s$. For hook shapes, two-column shapes, and partitions of the form $(n-2,2)$, we prove that the Kazhdan--Lusztig basis spans this maximal cone. More generally, we define an optimization problem over bases that are unitriangular with respect to the polytabloid basis, subject to the constraint that the operators $1+s$ act non-negatively. We prove that the feasible region forms a compact semialgebraic set, and interpret it in terms of a hierarchy of invariant cones under all $1+s$. We demonstrate that minimizing the trace of the Gram matrix uniquely recovers Young's seminormal basis. Furthermore, we verify computationally that maximization uniquely recovers the Kazhdan--Lusztig basis for all partitions of $n\leq 7$. In higher ranks, the optimization detects deviations from the Kazhdan--Lusztig basis and may favour other natural positive bases, such as the Springer basis or $p$-canonical bases. Finally, we extend this framework to irreducible representations of $\mathfrak{sl}_n$. We observe that the Gelfand--Tsetlin basis corresponds to the unique minimizer, and we conjecture that the canonical basis corresponds to the maximum in small ranks.
Universal dualities for Wilson loops in lattice Yang-Mills
We identify a universal finite-$N$ structure underlying Wilson loop expectations in lattice Yang-Mills, in any dimension $d\geq 2$, for gauge group $\mathrm{U}(N)$, and for arbitrary smooth central plaquette actions. The starting point is a state-sum expansion in plaquette labels by irreducible representations, in which each term factorizes into an action-dependent spectral weight and an action-independent topological coefficient. We then analyze these coefficients in three exact ways: as a gauge/string expansion over decorated spanning surfaces, as a local spin-foam/channel model on the dual incidence graph, and as a universal finite-$N$ master loop equation that closes on the coefficient side. As a consequence, several recent Wilson-action results are recovered as specializations of our broader action-agnostic framework.
A note on irreducible representations of symmetric groups and Sergeev superalgebras
We provide an explicit construction and a closed dimension formula in terms of hook lengths for the irreducible representations for the symmetric groups $\mathfrak{S}_p$ and the Sergeev superalgebras $\mathcal{Y}_p$ over an algebraically closed field $\mathbb{F}$ of characteristic $p>0$.
Kazhdan-Lusztig bases of parabolic Hecke algebras and applications to Schur-Weyl duality
With an eye to applications to type A and Schur-Weyl duality, we study Kazhdan-Lusztig bases for a general parabolic Hecke algebra. Parabolic Hecke algebras are idempotent subalgebras of Hecke algebras corresponding to parabolic subgroups, and for type A they coincide with the fused Hecke algebras appearing in a generalisation of the Schur-Weyl duality with the quantum group of GL(N). In this paper we investigate two different Kazhdan-Lusztig bases for parabolic Hecke algebras, together with the associated cells and the corresponding representations. We quickly specialise to type A, for which we describe the cells in terms of the RSK correspondence generalising thus the well-known description for the symmetric group. As a first application we recover the classification of irreducible representations of parabolic Hecke algebras of type A and provide a new construction of these representations. Next we turn to the Schur-Weyl duality and describe the kernel in terms of one the basis studied precedently. Moreover, we formulate some conjectures about a generator of these kernels in terms of Kazhdan-Lusztig basis elements, give some evidence and prove these conjectures in some special cases.
Webs and smooth components of two column Springer fibers
Webs and Springer fibers are separately important objects in representation theory: webs give a diagrammatic calculus for tensor invariants of $\mathfrak{sl}_k$, and the cohomology group of Springer fibers can be used to construct the irreducible representations of the symmetric group. Fung's 1997 thesis gave the first evidence of a connection between $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ webs and Springer fibers, showing that webs naturally index and describe the components of certain "two row" Springer fibers. However, this case is known to be far from generic.
This paper deepens this connection with a similar correspondence in the substantially more complicated "two column" case. In particular, and building on works of Fresse, Melnikov, and Sakas-Obeid, we use webs to give a clean characterization of the smooth components of two column rectangle Springer fibers and a simple description of the geometry of these smooth components. We also show that the Poincaré polynomial of the smooth components is invariant under the natural dihedral action on the corresponding webs.
Polynomial Expressions for Symmetric Group Characters on Cycles
In \cite{[CZ]}, Cohen and Zemel showed that for a partition $λ\vdash k$, the dimension of the irreducible representation of $S_{n}$ corresponding to the partition $(n-k,λ) \vdash n$ is a polynomial of degree $k$ in $n$, whose coefficients in the binomial basis count standard Young tableaux of shape $λ$ with special restrictions. In this paper, we generalize their results on the representation's dimension to character values on arbitrary cycles.
Tableaux and orbit harmonics quotients for finite transformation monoids
We extend Grood's tableau construction of irreducible representations of the rook monoid and Steinberg's analogous result for the full transformation monoid. Our approach is characteristic-free and applies to any submonoid $\mathcal{M}(n)$ of the partial transformation monoid on an $n$-element set that contains the symmetric group. To achieve this, we introduce and study a functor from the category of rational representations of the monoid of $n \times n$ matrices to the category of finite dimensional representations of $\mathcal{M}(n)$. We establish two branching rules. Our main results describe graded module structures of orbit harmonics quotients for the rook, partial transformation, and full transformation monoids. This yields analogs of the Cauchy decomposition for polynomial rings in $n\times n$ variables.
Rank-metric separation in irreducible representations of finite groups
We give a general lower bound on the rank of matrices of the form $ρ(h) - I$ with $ρ: G \rightarrow GL({\mathbb F}^n)$ an irreducible representation of a finite group $G$. The main tool in the proof is a (strengthening) of a reduction due to Efremenko from low rank matrices spanned by a few images of $ρ$ to Locally Decodable Codes (LDCs), which are a special kind of error correcting codes. We then apply the known results on 2-query LDCs to derive our rank bound.
Staircase Minimality and a Proof of Saxl's Conjecture
Saxl's conjecture (2012) asserts that for the staircase partition $ρ_k = (k, k-1, \ldots, 1)$, the tensor square of the corresponding irreducible representation of the symmetric group $S_{T_k}$ contains every irreducible representation as a constituent, where $T_k = k(k+1)/2$ is the $k$th triangular number. We prove this conjecture unconditionally.
Our proof introduces the Staircase Minimality Theorem: among all 2-regular partitions of $T_k$, the staircase $ρ_k$ is the unique dominance-minimal element. Combined with Ikenmeyer's theorem on dominance and Kronecker positivity for staircases, this establishes that every 2-regular partition appears in the tensor square. Modular saturation then follows using only the diagonal entries $d_{μμ} = 1$ of the decomposition matrix, and the Bessenrodt--Bowman--Sutton lifting theorem completes the proof.
We further prove that at triangular numbers, staircases are the only Kronecker-universal self-conjugate partitions, providing a complete characterization.
