On the Positivity of Dihedral Branching Coefficients of the Symmetric and Alternating Groups
We determine precisely when the branching coefficients arising from the restriction of irreducible representations of the symmetric group $S_n$ to the dihedral subgroup $D_n$ are nonzero, and we establish uniform linear lower bounds outside a finite exceptional family. As a consequence, we recover and substantially generalize known positivity results for cyclic subgroups $C_n \leq S_n$. Analogous results are obtained for the alternating group $A_n$.

Dimension statistics of representations of finite groups
This paper discusses what the dimension data of irreducible representations of a finite group looks like in some specific cases, including unipotent and reductive groups over finite fields. The essence of our investigation is whether the dimension data of irreducible representations of a finite group can be ``geometerized'', to become equal to the cardinality of certain orbit spaces. The first part of this paper deals with nilpotent and reductive groups over finite fields, whereas the second part deals with the symmetric group $S_n$. The main conclusion that we want to bring out to contrast these two cases is that for reductive groups over finite fields, the dimension data is concentrated (in a statistical sense) in a neighborhood of the maximal dimension, whereas for the symmetric group, it is spread out.

The problem of deciding the positivity of Kronecker coefficients and Saxl conjecture
Given an positive integer $k$, let $n:=\binom{k+1}{2}$. In 2012, during a talk at UCLA, Jan Saxl conjectured that all irreducible representations of the symmetric group $S_n$ occur in the decomposition of the tensor square of the irreducible representation corresponding to the staircase partition. In this paper, we investigate two useful methods to obtain some irreducible representations that occur in this decomposition. Our main tolls are the semi-group property for Kronecker coefficients and generalized blocks of symmetric groups.

Proof of a conjecture of Fomichev and Karev
We prove a conjecture of Fomichev and Karev [{European J. Combin.} 127 (2025) 104160] by showing the equality of two graph invariants: $\varphi$, defined via graph colorings, and $ψ$, derived from the $\mathfrak{sl}(2)$-weight system of its 2-dimensional irreducible representation.
On the second largest eigenvalue of certain graphs in the perfect matching association scheme
The perfect matching association scheme is a set of relations on the perfect matchings of the complete graph on $2n$ vertices. The relations between perfect matchings are defined by the cycle structure of the union of any two perfect matchings, and each relation can be represented as a matrix. Each matrix is labeled by an integer partition whose parts correspond to the size do the cycles in the union. Since these matrices form an association scheme, they are simultaneously diagonalizable. Further, it is well-known that the common eigenspaces correspond to the irreducible representations of $S_{2n}$ indexed by the even partitions of $2n$. In this paper, we conjecture that the second largest eigenvalue of the matrices in the perfect matching association scheme labeled by a partition containing at least two parts of size 1 always occurs on the eigenspace corresponding to the representation indexed by $[2n-2, 2]$. We confirm this conjecture for matrices labeled by the partitions $[2, 1^{n-2}], [3, 1^{n-3}], [2, 2, 1^{n-4}], [4, 1^{n-4}], [3, 2, 1^{n-5}]$, and $[5, 1^{n-5}]$, as well as any partition in which the first part is sufficiently large.

Equivariant inverse Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomials of thagomizer matroids
In this paper, we focus on the equivariant inverse Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomials of thagomizer matroids, a natural family of graphic matroids associated with the complete tripartite graphs $K_{1,1,n}$. These polynomials were introduced by Proudfoot as an extension of the Kazhdan--Lusztig theory for matroids. We derive closed-form expressions for the $\mathfrak{S}_n$-equivariant inverse Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomials of thagomizer matroids and present them explicitly in terms of the irreducible representations of $\mathfrak{S}_n$. As an application, we also provide explicit formulas for the non-equivariant inverse Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomials, originally defined by Gao and Xie, and give an alternative proof using generating functions. Furthermore, we prove that the inverse Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomials of thagomizer matroids are log-concave.

Gröbner crystal structures
We develop a theory of bicrystalline ideals, synthesizing Gröbner basis techniques and Kashiwara's crystal theory. This provides a unified algebraic, combinatorial, and computational approach that applies to ideals of interest, old and new. The theory concerns ideals in the coordinate ring of matrices, stable under the action of some Levi group, whose quotients admit standard bases equipped with a crystal structure. We construct an effective algorithm to decide if an ideal is bicrystalline. When the answer is affirmative, we provide a uniform, generalized Littlewood-Richardson rule for computing the multiplicity of irreducible representations either for the quotient or the ideal itself.

Totally positive Toeplitz matrices: classical and modern
By a theorem of Edrei, an infinite, normalised totally nonnegative upper-triangular Toeplitz matrix is determined by a pair of nonnegative parameter sequences, the `Schoenberg parameters', where nonzero parameters correspond to the roots and poles of a naturally associated generating function. These totally nonnegative Toeplitz matrices and their parameters also arise in the classification of characters of the infinite symmetric group by later work of Thoma. Moreover the Schoenberg parameters have an asymptotic interpretation in terms of irreducible representations of S_n and their Young diagrams by Vershik-Kerov. In this article we consider infinite totally positive Toeplitz matrices as limits of finite ones, and we obtain two further asymptotic descriptions of the Schoenberg parameters that are now related to quantum cohomology of the flag variety as n goes to infinity. One is related to asymptotics of normalised quantum parameters, and the other to asymptotics of the Chern classes of the tautological line bundles. We also describe the asymptotics of (quantum) Schubert classes in terms of the Schoenberg parameters. Our limit formulas relate to and were motivated by a tropical analogue of this theory that we survey. In the tropical setting one finds an asymptotic relationship between the `tropical Schoenberg parameters' and the weight map from Lusztig's parametrisation of the canonical basis.

Simple harmonic oscillators from non-semisimple walled Brauer algebras
Walled Brauer algebras $B_N ( m , n ) $ illuminate the combinatorics of mixed tensor representations of $U(N)$, with $m$ copies of the fundamental and $n$ copies of the anti-fundamental representation. They lie at the intersection of research in representation theory, AdS/CFT and quantum information theory. They have been used to study of correlators in multi-matrix models motivated by brane-anti-brane physics in AdS/CFT. They have been applied in computing and optimising fidelities of port-based quantum teleportation. There is a large $N$ regime, specifically $ N \ge (m+n)$ where the algebras are semi-simple and their representation theory more tractable. There are known combinatorial formulae for dimensions of irreducible representations and associated reduction multiplicities. The large $N$ regime has a stability property whereby these formulae are independent of $N$. In this paper we initiate a systematic study of the combinatorics in the non-semisimple regime of $ N = m +n - l $, with positive $l$. We introduce restricted Bratteli diagrams (RBD) which are useful as an instrument to process known data from the large $N$ regime to calculate representation theory data in the non-semisimple regime. We identify within the non-semisimple regime, a region of $(m,n)$-stability, where $ \min ( m, n ) \ge ( 2l -3) $ and the RBD take a stable form depending on $l$ only and not the choice of $ m,n$ within the region. In this regime, several aspects of the combinatorics of the RBD are controlled by a universal partition function for an infinite tower of simple harmonic oscillators closely related, but not identical, to the partition function of 2D non-chiral free scalar field theory.

An introduction to the symmetric group algebra
This is an introduction to the group algebras of the symmetric groups, written for a quarter-long graduate course. After recalling the definition of group algebras (and monoid algebras) in general, as well as basic properties of permutations, we introduce several families of elements in the symmetric group algebras $\mathbf{k}[S_n]$ such as the Young--Jucys--Murphy elements, the (sign-)integrals and the conjugacy class sums. Then comes a chapter on group actions and representations in general, followed by the core of this text: a study of the representations of symmetric groups (i.e., of left $\mathbf{k}[S_n]$-modules), including the classical theory of Young tableaux and Young symmetrizers. We prove in detail the main facts including the characterization of irreducible representations (in characteristic $0$), the Garnir relations, the standard basis theorem, the description of duals of Specht modules, and the hook length formula, as well as a number of less known results. Finally, we describe several bases of $\mathbf{k}[S_n]$ that arise from the study of Specht modules, including the Murphy cellular bases. The methods used are elementary and computational. We aim to assume as little as possible of the base ring $\mathbf{k}$, and to use as little as possible from representation theory (nothing more advanced than Maschke and Jordan--Hölder). Over 100 exercises (without solutions) are scattered through the text.

Dimensions of compositions modulo a prime
The (ordinary) representation theory of the symmetric group is fascinating and has rich connections to combinatorics, including the Frobenius correspondence to the self-dual graded Hopf algebra of symmetric functions. The $0$-Hecke algebra (of type $A$) is a deformation of the group algebra of the symmetric group, and its representation theory has an analogous correspondence to the dual graded Hopf algebras of quasisymmetric functions and noncommutative symmetric functions. Macdonald used the hook length formula for the number of standard Young tableaux of a fixed shape to determine how many irreducible representations of the symmetric group have dimensions indivisible by a prime $p$. In this paper, we study the dimensions of the projective indecomposable modules of the $0$-Hecke algebra modulo $p$; such a module is indexed by a composition and its dimension is given by a ribbon number, i.e., the cardinality of a descent class. Applying a result of Dickson on the congruence of multinomial coefficients, we count how many ribbon numbers belong to each congruence class modulo $p$. We also extend the result to other finite Coxeter groups.

Standard posets and integral weight bases for symmetric powers of minuscule representations
This paper extends our earlier work where we constructed ``minuscule'' representations of Kac--Moody algebras from colored posets in a way that maintains key properties of the well-known minuscule representations of simple Lie algebras. In this paper we work only with finite posets. We define standard posets here as ones that can be used to construct weight bases of $m^\text{th}$ symmetric powers ($m \ge 1$) of these minuscule Kac--Moody representations over the integers in a certain fashion. Our main result is to show that our ``$Γ$-colored $d$-complete'' and ``$Γ$-colored minuscule'' posets are standard. When the algebra at hand is a simply laced simple Lie algebra and the representation minuscule in the classic sense (i.e. isomorphic to irreducible $V(λ)$ for minuscule highest weight $λ$), our result produces a concrete combinatorially described weight basis for the irreducible representation $V(mλ)$ that is indexed in a natural fashion by $m$-multichains in the weight lattice for $V(λ)$. C.S. Seshadri first showed such an indexing of a basis is possible. Our work here is entirely combinatorial and does not use results or techniques from algebraic geometry. Constructions in this paper are independent of Lie type and actions of Kac--Moody algebra elements on basis vectors are effectively specified.

Wreath Generalization of Littlewood Reciprocity
Given any $m$-dimensional complex representation $η$ of a finite group $G$ and any highest weight representation $V^λ$ of $\mathrm{GL}_{nm}(\mathbb{C})$ we may define an action of $G^n \rtimes \mathfrak{S}_n$ on $V^λ$ using the embedding $\mathrm{GL}_{m}(\mathbb{C})^n \rtimes \mathfrak{S}_n \leq \mathrm{GL}_{nm}(\mathbb{C})$ and $η: G \rightarrow \mathrm{GL}_m(\mathbb{C})$. We derive a branching rule for the multiplicities of irreducible $G^n \rtimes \mathfrak{S}_n$ representations in $V^λ.$ The formula generalizes Littlewood's reciprocity rule for branching between $\mathrm{GL}_n(\mathbb{C})$ and the symmetric group of permutation matrices $\mathfrak{S}_n \leq \mathrm{GL}_n(\mathbb{C}).$

Generalized Higher Specht Polynomials and Homogeneous Representations of Symmetric Groups
We consider actions, similar to those of Haglund, Rhoades, and Shimozono on ordered partitions, and their basis in terms of the higher Specht polynomials of Ariki, Terasoma, and Yamada, as carried out by Gillespie and Rhoades. By allowing empty sets and working with multi-sets and weak partitions as indices, we obtain a decomposition of the action of $S_{n}$ on homogeneous polynomials of degree $d$ into irreducible representations, in a way that lifts a formula of Stanley. By considering generalized higher Specht polynomials, we obtain yet another such decomposition, lifting another formula involving Kostka numbers. We also investigate several operations on both types of representations, which are based on normalizations of the generalized higher Specht polynomials that allow for defining their stable versions.
Total trades, intersection matrices and Specht modules
Published • View PublicationBIB
Trades are important objects in combinatorial design theory that may be realized as certain elements of kernels of inclusion matrices. Total trades were introduced recently by Ghorbani, Kamali and Khosravshahi, who showed that over a field of characteristic zero the vector space of trades decomposes into a direct sum of spaces of total trades. In this paper, we show that the vector space spanned by the permutations of a total trade is an irreducible representation of the symmetric group. As a corollary, the previous decomposition theorem is recovered. Also, a basis is obtained for the module of total trades in the spirit of Specht polynomials. More generally, in the second part of the paper we consider intersection matrices and determine the irreducible decompositions of their images. This generalizes previously known results concerning ranks of special cases.

Quantum Littlewood correspondences
In the 1940s Littlewood formulated three fundamental correspondences for the immanants and Schur symmetric functions on the general linear group, which establish deep connections between representation theory of the symmetric group and the general linear group parallel to the Schur-Weyl duality. In this paper, we introduce the notion of quantum immanants in the quantum coordinate algebra using primitive idempotents of the Hecke algebra. By employing $R$-matrix techniques, we establish the quantum analog of Littlewood correspondences between quantum immanants and Schur functions for the quantum coordinate algebra. In the setting of the Schur-Weyl-Jimbo duality, we construct an exact correspondence between the Gelfand-Tsetlin bases of the irreducible representations of the quantum enveloping algebra $U_q(\mathfrak{gl}(n))$ and Young's orthonormal basis of an irreducible representation of the Hecke algebra $\mathcal H_m$. This isomorphism leads to our trace formula for the quantum immanants, which settled the generalization problem of $q$-analog of Kostant's formular for $λ$-immanants. As applications, we also derive general $q$-Littlewood-Merris-Watkins identities and $q$-Goulden-Jackson identities as special cases of the quantum Littlewood correspondence III.

On the action of the cactus group on the set of Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns for orthogonal Lie algebras
The purpose of this work is to define a natural action of the cactus group on the set of Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns for orthogonal Lie algebras. These Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns are meant to index the Gelfand-Tsetlin basis in the irreducible representations of the orthogonal Lie algebra $\mathfrak{o}_N$ with respect to the chain of nested orthogonal Lie algebras $\mathfrak{o}_N \supset \mathfrak{o}_{N-1} \supset \ldots \supset \mathfrak{o}_3$. Using the Howe duality between $O_N$ and $\mathfrak{o}_{2n}$, we realize some representations of $\mathfrak{o}_N$ as multiplicity spaces inside the tensor power of the spinor representation $(Λ\mathbb{C}^{n})^{\otimes N}$. There is a natural choice of the basis inside the multiplicity space, which agrees with the decomposition of $(Λ\mathbb{C}^{n})^{\otimes N}$ into simple $\mathfrak{o}_{2n}$-modules. We call such basis principal. The action of the cactus group $C_N$ by the crystal commutors on the crystal arising from $(Λ\mathbb{C}^{n})^{\otimes N}$ induces the action of $C_N$ on the set indexing the principal basis inside the multiplicity space. We call this set regular cell tables. Regular cell tables are the analog of semi-standard Young tables. There is a natural bijection between a specific subset of semi-standard Young tables and regular cell tables. In this paper, we establish a natural bijection between the principal basis and the Gelfand-Tsetlin basis and, therefore, define an action of the cactus group on the set Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns.

Iwasawa theory and the representations of finite groups
In this note, I develop a representation-theoretic refinement of the Iwasawa theory of finite Cayley graphs. Building on analogies between graph zeta functions and number-theoretic L-functions, I study $\mathbb{Z}_\ell$-towers of Cayley graphs and the asymptotic growth of their Jacobians. My main result establishes that the Iwasawa polynomial associated to such a tower admits a canonical factorization indexed by the irreducible representations of the underlying group. This leads to the definition of representation-theoretic Iwasawa polynomials, whose properties are studied.

The number of irreducibles in the plethysm $s_λ[s_m]$
We give a formula for the number of irreducibles (with multiplicity) in the decomposition of the plethysm $s_λ[s_m]$ of Schur functions in terms of the number of lattice points in certain rational polytopes. In the case where $λ= n$ consists of a single part, we will give a combinatorial interpretation of this number as the cardinality of a set of matrices modulo permutation equivalence. This is also the setting of Foulkes' conjecture, and our results allow us to state a weaker version that only involves comparing the cardinalities of such sets, rather than the multiplicities of irreducible representations.
Statistics for random representations of Lie algebras
In this paper we investigate how a typical, large-dimensional representation looks for a complex Lie algebra. In particular, we study the family $\mathfrak{sl}_{r+1}(\mathbb{C})$ of Lie algebras for $r \geq 2$ and derive asymptotic probability distributions for the multiplicity of small irreducible representations, as well as the largest dimension, the largest height, and the total number of irreducible representations appearing in the decomposition of a representation sampled uniformly from all representations with the same dimension. This provides a natural generalization to the similar statistical studies of integer partitions, which forms the case $r=1$ of our considerations and where one has a rich toolkit ranging from combinatorial methods to approaches utilizing the theory of modular forms. We perform our analysis by extending the statistical mechanics inspired approaches in the case of partitions to the infinite family here.
