Enumeration of orientably-regular maps with automorphism group $\PGam(2,2^p)$ for prime $p$
With help of group characters we enumerate orientably-regular maps of a given type with automorphism group isomorphic to $\PGam(2,2^p)$ for prime $p$.
Improved Bounds for Nested Orthogonal Arrays
Nested orthogonal arrays (NOAs) have found increasing application in various experimental design problems. A central challenge in this field is the derivation of lower bounds on the number of runs. These bounds serve as a powerful criterion to prove the nonexistence of specific arrays. For symmetric NOAs, Mukerjee, Qian, and Wu developed statistical arguments that yield fairly tight bounds. By contrast, the bounds for asymmetric NOAs proposed by Lin, Pang and Chen, which are obtained via a recursive column deletion technique that reduces the general problem to NOAs of strength 2, are not optimal. Consequently, improving these bounds remains a significant open problem. In this paper, we reformulate the Rao bound and establish a new bound for NOAs under a group theoretic framework. Using the character theory of finite abelian groups, we obtain an equivalent characterization via group characters. This framework allows us to give a new proof of Rao bound for orthogonal arrays and to derive significantly sharper lower bounds for asymmetric NOAs than those of Lin et al. In the case where all factor levels are equal, our bounds reduce naturally to the symmetric bounds of Mukerjee, Qian, and Wu. We also confirm their optimality by explicitly two constructions of NOAs that achieve these bounds.

On the non-existence of skew-Hadamard difference sets in certain non-abelian groups
Published in Australas. J. Combin. 95 (2) (2026), 248-256 • Search Publication
A skew-Hadamard difference set (SHDS) in a finite group $G$ is a classical combinatorial object with deep connections to design theory, coding theory, group theory, and the construction of Hadamard matrices. Even though the abelian case has been extensively studied -- with strong structural constraints known, such as the necessity of $G$ being a $p$-group for some prime $p \equiv 3 \pmod{4}$ -- there are still some open questions regarding existence of SHDSs for the abelian case. The non-abelian case remains largely unexplored, despite the known existence of non-abelian SHDSs. In this paper, we establish new necessary conditions on the order and structure of a finite group $G$ that admits an SHDS. These results provide the first general structural restrictions for SHDSs in non-abelian groups. In particular, we prove that if a group $G$ is nilpotent and admits an SHDS, then $G$ is a $p$-group. Our method makes use of the structure of the rational group algebra, and completely avoids the use of the group characters.

Polynomial Expressions for Symmetric Group Characters on Cycles
In \cite{[CZ]}, Cohen and Zemel showed that for a partition $λ\vdash k$, the dimension of the irreducible representation of $S_{n}$ corresponding to the partition $(n-k,λ) \vdash n$ is a polynomial of degree $k$ in $n$, whose coefficients in the binomial basis count standard Young tableaux of shape $λ$ with special restrictions. In this paper, we generalize their results on the representation's dimension to character values on arbitrary cycles.
Equal knapsack identities between symmetric group character degrees
We prove a series of ``knapsack'' type equalities for irreducible character degrees of symmetric groups. That is, we find disjoint subsets of the partitions of $n$ so that the two corresponding character-degree sums are equal. Our main result refines our recent description of the Riordan numbers as the sum of all character degrees $f^λ$ where $λ$ is a partition of $n$ into three parts of the same parity. In particular, the sum of the ``fat-hook'' degrees $f^{(k,k,1^{n-2k})}+f^{(k+1,k+1,1^{n-2k-2})}$ equals the sum of all $f^λ$ where $λ$ has three parts, with the second equal to $k$ and the second and third of equal parity. We further prove an infinite family of additional ``knapsack'' identities between character degrees

Asymptotics of higher Lie characters
Higher Lie characters form a distinguished family of symmetric group characters, which appear in many areas of algebra and combinatorics. An old open problem of Thrall is to decompose them into irreducibles. We propose a novel asymptotic approach to this problem, showing that many families of higher Lie characters tend to be proportional to the regular character. In particular, a random higher Lie character tends, in probability, to be proportional to the regular character.

A note on polynomials for character degrees
A recent result of Cohen and Zemel provides an elegant expansion of the Rasala polynomials for symmetric group character degrees. In this note we present an alternative short algebraic proof. Extensions to polynomials of character values follow.

New Identities in the Character Table of Symmetric Groups involving Riordan Numbers
Amdeberhan recently proposed certain equalities between sums in the character table of symmetric groups. These equalities are between signed column sums in the character table, summing over the rows labeled by partitions in $\Ev$, where $λ$ is a partition of $n$ with $r$ nonzero parts and $\Ev$ is a multiset containing $2^r$ partitions of $2n$. While we observe that these equalities are not true in general, we prove that they do hold in interesting special cases. These lead to new equalities between sums of degrees of irreducible characters for the symmetric group and a new combinatorial interpretation for the Riordan numbers in terms of degrees of irreducible characters labeled by partitions with three parts of the same parity. This is the first, to our knowledge, theorem about degrees of symmetric group characters with parity conditions imposed on the partitions indexing the characters.

A New Symmetric Function Identity With an Application to symmetric group character values
Symmetric functions show up in several areas of mathematics including enumerative combinatorics and representation theory. Tewodros Amdeberhan conjectures equalities of $Σ_n$ characters sums over a new set called $Ev(λ)$. When investigating the alternating sum of characters for $Ev(λ)$ written in terms of the inner product of Schur functions and power sum symmetric functions, we found an equality between the alternating sum of power sum symmetric polynomials and a product of monomial symmetric polynomials. As a consequence, a special case of an alternating sum of $Σ_n$ characters over the set $Ev(λ)$ equals $0$.

Counting of surfaces and computational complexity in column sums of symmetric group character tables
The character table of the symmetric group $S_n$, of permutations of $n$ objects, is of fundamental interest in theoretical physics, combinatorics as well as computational complexity theory. We investigate the implications of an identity, which has a geometrical interpretation in combinatorial topological field theories, relating the column sum of normalised central characters of $S_n$ to a sum of structure constants of multiplication in the centre of the group algebra of $S_n$. The identity leads to the proof that a combinatorial computation of the column sum belongs to complexity class \shP. The sum of structure constants has an interpretation in terms of the counting of branched covers of the sphere. This allows the identification of a tractable subset of the structure constants related to genus zero covers. We use this subset to prove that the column sum for a conjugacy class labelled by partition $λ$ is non-vanishing if and only if the permutations in the conjugacy class are even. This leads to the result that the determination of the vanishing or otherwise of the column sum is in complexity class \pP. The subset gives a positive lower bound on the column sum for any even $ λ$. For any disjoint decomposition of $ λ$ as $λ_1 \sqcup λ_2 $ we obtain a lower bound for the column sum at $ λ$ in terms of the product of the column sums for $ λ_1$ and$λ_2$. This can be expressed as a super-additivity property for the logarithms of column sums of normalized characters.

Hyperoctahedral group characters and a type-BC analog of graph coloring
We state combinatorial formulas for hyperoctahedral group ($\mathfrak B_n$) character evaluations of the form $χ( {{\widetilde C}_w}^{\negthickspace\negthickspace BC}\negthickspace(1))$, where ${{\widetilde C}_w}^{\negthickspace\negthickspace BC}\negthickspace(1) \in \Bbb Z[\mathfrak B_n]$ is a type-BC Kazhdan-Lusztig basis element, with $w \in \mathfrak B_n$ corresponding to simultaneously smooth type-B and C Schubert varieties. We also extend the definition of symmetric group codominance to elements of $\mathfrak B_n$ and show that for each element $w \in \mathfrak B_n$ above, there exists a BC-codominant element $v \in \mathfrak B_n$ satisfying $χ( {{\widetilde C}_w}^{\negthickspace\negthickspace BC}\negthickspace(1)) = χ( {{\widetilde C}_v}^{\negthickspace\negthickspace BC}\negthickspace(1))$ for all $\mathfrak B_n$-characters $χ$. Combinatorial structures and maps appearing in these formulas are type-BC extensions of planar networks, unit interval orders, indifference graphs, poset tableaux, and colorings. Using the ring of type-BC symmetric functions, we introduce natural generating functions $Y( {{\widetilde C}_w}^{\negthickspace\negthickspace BC}\negthickspace(1))$ for the above evaluations. These provide a new type-BC analog of Stanley's chromatic symmetric functions [Adv. Math. 111 (1995) pp. 166-194].

A generalization of immanants based on partition algebra characters
Published in Can. Math. Bull. 67 (2024) 1001-1010 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a generalization of immanants of matrices, using partition algebra characters in place of symmetric group characters. We prove that our immanant-like function on square matrices, which we refer to as the recombinant, agrees with the usual definition for immanants for the special case whereby the vacillating tableaux associated with the irreducible characters correspond, according to the Bratteli diagram for partition algebra representations, to the integer partition shapes for symmetric group characters. In contrast to previously studied variants and generalizations of immanants, as in Temperley-Lieb immanants and $f$-immanants, the sum that we use to define recombinants is indexed by a full set of partition diagrams, as opposed to permutations.

Explicit formulas for a family of hypermaps beyond the one-face case
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory Series A, 206 (2024), Article 105905 • View PublicationBIB
Enumeration of hypermaps is widely studied in many fields. In particular, enumerating hypermaps with a fixed edge-type according to the number of faces and genus is one topic of great interest. However, it is challenging and explicit results mainly exist for hypermaps having one face, especially for the edge-type corresponding to maps. The first systematic study of one-face hypermaps with any fixed edge-type is the work of Jackson (Trans.~Amer.~Math.~Soc.~299, 785--801, 1987) using group characters. In 2011, Stanley obtained the generating polynomial of one-face hypermaps of any fixed edge-type expressed in terms of the backward shift operator. There are also enormous amount of work on enumerating one-face hypermaps of specific edge-types. The enumeration of hypermaps with more faces is generally much harder. In this paper, we make some progress in that regard, and obtain the generating polynomials and properties for a family of typical two-face hypermaps with almost any fixed edge-type.

Generating functions for some series of characters of classical Lie groups
There exist a number of well known multiplicative generating functions for series of Schur functions. Amongst these are some related to the dual Cauchy identity whose expansion coefficients are rather simple, and in some cases periodic in parameters specifying the Schur functions. More recently similar identities have been found involving expansions in terms of characters of the symplectic group. Here these results are extended and generalised to all classical Lie groups. This is done through the derivation of explicit recurrence relations for the expansion coefficients based on the action of the Weyl groups of both the symplectic and orthogonal groups. Copious results are tabulated in the form of explicit values of the expansion coefficients as functions of highest weight parameters. An alternative approach is then based on dual pairs of symplectic and/or orthogonal groups. A byproduct of this approach is that expansions in terms of spin orthogonal group characters can always be recovered from non-spin cases.

Positivity of the symmetric group characters is as hard as the polynomial time hierarchy
Published in International Mathematics Research Notices, Volume 2024, Issue 10, pages 8442-8458 • View PublicationBIB
We prove that deciding the vanishing of the character of the symmetric group is $C_=P$-complete. We use this hardness result to prove that the the square of the character is not contained in $\#P$, unless the polynomial hierarchy collapses to the second level. This rules out the existence of any (unsigned) combinatorial description for the square of the characters. As a byproduct of our proof we conclude that deciding positivity of the character is $PP$-complete under many-one reductions, and hence $PH$-hard under Turing-reductions.

Ninth variation of classical group characters of type A-D and Littlewood identities
Published in Electron. J. Combin. 30 (2023), no. 4, Paper No. 4.9, 39 pp • View PublicationBIB
We introduce certain generalisations of the characters of the classical Lie groups, extending the recently defined factorial characters of Foley and King. In this extension, the factorial powers are replaced with an arbitrary sequence of polynomials, as in Sergeev-Veselov's generalised Schur functions and Okada's generalised Schur P- and Q-functions. We also offer a similar generalisation for the rational Schur functions. We derive Littlewood-type identities for our generalisations. These identities allow us to give new (unflagged) Jacobi-Trudi identities for the Foley-King factorial characters and for rational versions of the factorial Schur functions. We also propose an extension of the original Macdonald's ninth variation of Schur functions to the case of symplectic and orthogonal characters, which helps us prove Nägelsbach-Kostka identities.

Generating functions for monomial characters of wreath products $\mathbb Z/d \mathbb Z \wr \mathfrak S_n$
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $\mathbb Z/d\mathbb Z \wr \mathfrak S_n$ denote the wreath product of the cyclic group $\mathbb Z/d\mathbb Z$ with the symmetric group $\mathfrak S_n$. We define generating functions for monomial (induced one-dimensional) characters of $\mathbb Z/d\mathbb Z \wr \mathfrak S_n$ and express these in terms of determinants and permanents. This extends work of Littlewood ({\em The Theory of Group Characters and Representations of Groups}, 1940) and Merris and Watkins ({\em Linear Algebra Appl.}, {\bf 64}, 1985) on generating functions for the monomial characters of $\mathfrak S_n$.

Combinatorially refine a Zagier-Stanley result on products of permutations
Published in Discrete Mathematics 343(8) (2020), Article 111912 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we enumerate the pairs of permutations that are long cycles and whose product has a given cycle-type. Our main result is a simple relation concerning the desired numbers for a few related cycle-types. The relation refines a formula of the number of pairs of long cycles whose product has $k$ cycles independently obtained by Zagier and Stanley relying on group characters, and was previously obtained by Féray and Vassilieva by counting some colored permutations first and then relying on some algebraic computations in the ring of symmetric functions. Our approach here is simpler and combinatorial.
