Weingarten calculus with virtual isometries
In this paper, we develop a novel approach to the Weingarten calculus employing the notion of virtual isometries. Traditionally, Weingarten calculus provides explicit formulas for integrating polynomial functions over compact matrix groups with respect to the Haar measure, yet faces limitations when evaluating high-degree integrals due to the non-invertibility of the associated matrices. We revisit these classical computations from a new perspective: by constructing Haar-distributed matrices via sequences of complex reflections, we derive new recursive structures for the Weingarten functions across different dimensions. This framework leads to two main results: (1) an explicit Weingarten calculus for complex reflections, yielding systematic moment computations for associated rank-one matrices, and (2) a novel convolution formula that connects Weingarten functions in dimension $n$ to those in dimension $n-1$ through the introduction of ascension functions in the symmetric group algebra. Our approach not only provides a unified treatment for unitary groups, but also sheds light on the algebraic and probabilistic aspects of high-degree integral computations. Several examples and applications are presented.

Moments of random quantum marginals via Weingarten calculus
Published • View PublicationBIB
The randomized quantum marginal problem asks about the joint distribution of the partial traces ("marginals") of a uniform random Hermitian operator with fixed spectrum acting on a space of tensors. We introduce a new approach to this problem based on studying the mixed moments of the entries of the marginals. For randomized quantum marginal problems that describe systems of distinguishable particles, bosons, or fermions, we prove formulae for these mixed moments, which determine the joint distribution of the marginals completely. Our main tool is Weingarten calculus, which provides a method for computing integrals of polynomial functions with respect to Haar measure on the unitary group. As an application, in the case of two distinguishable particles, we prove some results on the asymptotic behavior of the marginals as the dimension of one or both Hilbert spaces goes to infinity.

Random strict partitions and random shifted tableaux
Published in Sel. Math. New Ser. 26, 10 (2020) • View PublicationBIB
We study asymptotics of random shifted Young diagrams which correspond to a given sequence of reducible projective representations of the symmetric groups. We show limit results (Law of Large Numbers and Central Limit Theorem) for their shapes, provided that the representation character ratios and their cumulants converge to zero at some prescribed speed. Our class of examples includes uniformly random shifted standard tableaux with prescribed shape as well as shifted tableaux generated by some natural combinatorial algorithms (such as shifted Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence) applied to a random input.

Linear versus spin: representation theory of the symmetric groups
Published in Algebraic Combinatorics, Volume 3 (2020) no. 1, pp. 249-280 • View PublicationBIB
We relate the linear asymptotic representation theory of the symmetric groups to its spin counterpart. In particular, we give explicit formulas which express the normalized irreducible spin characters evaluated on a strict partition $ξ$ with analogous normalized linear characters evaluated on the double partition $D(ξ)$. We also relate some natural filtration on the usual (linear) Kerov-Olshanski algebra of polynomial functions on the set of Young diagrams with its spin counterpart. Finally, we give a spin counterpart to Stanley formula for the characters of the symmetric groups.

We give a new formula for the irreducible spin characters of the symmetric groups. This formula is analogous to Stanley's character formula for the usual (linear) characters of the symmetric groups.

A Spin Analogue of Kerov Polynomials
Published in SIGMA 14 (2018), 053, 13 pages • View PublicationBIB
Kerov polynomials describe normalized irreducible characters of the symmetric groups in terms of the free cumulants associated with Young diagrams. We suggest well-suited counterparts of the Kerov polynomials in spin (or projective) representation settings. We show that spin analogues of irreducible characters are polynomials in even free cumulants associated with double diagrams of strict partitions. Moreover, we present a conjecture for the positivity of their coefficients.

Weingarten calculus via orthogonality relations: new applications
Published in ALEA, Lat. Am. J. Probab. Math. Stat. 14 (2017), no. 1, 631-656 • View PublicationBIB
Weingarten calculus is a completely general and explicit method to compute the moments of the Haar measure on compact subgroups of matrix algebras. Particular cases of this calculus were initiated by theoretical physicists -- including Weingarten, after whom this calculus was coined by the first author, after investigating it systematically. Substantial progress was achieved subsequently by the second author and coworkers, based on representation theoretic and combinatorial techniques. All formulas of `Weingarten calculus' are in the spirit of Weingarten's seminal paper [W78]. However, modern proofs are very different from Weingarten's initial ideas. In this paper, we revisit Weingarten's initial proof and we illustrate its power by uncovering two new important applications: (i) a uniform bound on the Weingarten function, that subsumes existing uniform bounds, and is optimal up to a polynomial factor, and (ii) an extension of Weingarten calculus to symmetric spaces and conceptual proofs of identities established by the second author.

Polynomiality of shifted Plancherel averages and content evaluations
Published in Annales Mathématiques Blaise Pascal 24, no. 1 (2017), 55-82 • View PublicationBIB
The shifted Plancherel measure is a natural probability measure on strict partitions. We prove a polynomiality property for the averages of the shifted Plancherel measure. As an application, we give alternative proofs of some content evaluation formulas, obtained by Han and Xiong very recently. Our main tool is factorial Schur $Q$-functions.

Primitive factorizations, Jucys-Murphy elements, and matrix models
Published • View PublicationBIB
A factorization of a permutation into transpositions is called "primitive" if its factors are weakly ordered. We discuss the problem of enumerating primitive factorizations of permutations, and its place in the hierarchy of previously studied factorization problems. Several formulas enumerating minimal primitive and possibly non-minimal primitive factorizations are presented, and interesting connections with Jucys-Murphy elements, symmetric group characters, and matrix models are described.

Jucys-Murphy elements, orthogonal matrix integrals, and Jack measures
Published in The Ramanujan Journal 26 (2011), 69--107 • View PublicationBIB
We study symmetric polynomials whose variables are odd-numbered Jucys-Murphy elements. They define elements of the Hecke algebra associated to the Gelfand pair of the symmetric group with the hyperoctahedral group. We evaluate their expansions in zonal spherical functions and in double coset sums. These evaluations are related to integrals of polynomial functions over orthogonal groups. Furthermore, we give an extension of them, based on Jack polynomials.

Jucys-Murphy Elements and Unitary Matrix Integrals
Published in International Mathematics Research Notices (2013), no. 2, 362--397 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we study the relationship between polynomial integrals on the unitary group and the conjugacy class expansion of symmetric functions in Jucys-Murphy elements. Our main result is an explicit formula for the top coefficients in the class expansion of monomial symmetric functions in Jucys-Murphy elements, from which we recover the first order asymptotics of polynomial integrals over $\U(N)$ as $N \rightarrow \infty$. Our results on class expansion include an analogue of Macdonald's result for the top connection coefficients of the class algebra, a generalization of Stanley and Olshanski's result on the polynomiality of content statistics on Plancherel-random partitions, and an exact formula for the multiplicity of the class of full cycles in the expansion of a complete symmetric function in Jucys-Murphy elements. The latter leads to a new combinatorial interpretation of the Carlitz-Riordan central factorial numbers.

Jack deformations of Plancherel measures and traceless Gaussian random matrices
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 15 (2008), R149 • View PublicationBIB
We study random partitions $λ=(λ_1,λ_2,...,λ_d)$ of $n$ whose length is not bigger than a fixed number $d$. Suppose a random partition $λ$ is distributed according to the Jack measure, which is a deformation of the Plancherel measure with a positive parameter $α>0$. We prove that for all $α>0$, in the limit as $n \to \infty$, the joint distribution of scaled $λ_1,..., λ_d$ converges to the joint distribution of some random variables from a traceless Gaussian $β$-ensemble with $β=2/α$. We also give a short proof of Regev's asymptotic theorem for the sum of $β$-powers of $f^λ$, the number of standard tableaux of shape $λ$.

Averages of ratios of characteristic polynomials in circular beta-ensembles and super-Jack polynomials
We study the averages of ratios of characteristic polynomials over circular $β$-ensembles, where $β$ is a positive real number. Using Jack polynomial theory, we obtain three expressions for ratio averages. Two of them are given as sums of super-Jack polynomials and another one is given by a hyperdeterminant. As applications, we give dual relations for ratio averages between $β$ and $4/β$.

Moments of characteristic polynomials for compact symmetric spaces and Jack polynomials
Published in J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 40 (2007) 13567-13586 • View PublicationBIB
We express the averages of products of characteristic polynomials for random matrix ensembles associated with compact symmetric spaces in terms of Jack polynomials or Heckman and Opdam's Jacobi polynomials depending on the root system of the space. We also give explicit expressions for the asymptotic behavior of these averages in the limit as the matrix size goes to infinity.

Hyperdeterminantal expressions for Jack functions of rectangular shapes
Published in Journal of Algebra 320 (2008) 612--632 • View PublicationBIB
We derive a Jacobi-Trudi type formula for Jack functions of rectangular shapes. In this formula, we make use of a hyperdeterminant, which is Cayley's simple generalization of the determinant. In addition, after developing the general theory of hyperdeterminants, we give summation formulae for Schur functions involving hyperdeterminants, and evaluate Toeplitz-type hyperdeterminants by using Jack function theory.

Alpha-Pfaffian, pfaffian point process and shifted Schur measure
Published in Linear Algebra and its Applications 403 (2005) 369--398 • View PublicationBIB
For any complex number $α$ and any even-size skew-symmetric matrix $B$, we define a generalization $\pfaα(B)$ of the pfaffian $\pf(B)$ which we call the $α$-pfaffian. The $α$-pfaffian is a pfaffian analogue of the $α$-determinant. It gives the pfaffian at $α=-1$. We give some formulas for $α$-pfaffians and study the positivity. Further we define point processes determined by the $α$-pfaffian. Also we provide a linear algebraic proof of the explicit pfaffian expression for the correlation function of the shifted Schur measure.

Correlation functions of the shifted Schur measure
Published in J. Math. Soc. Japan, vol.57, no. 3 (2005), 619--637 • View PublicationBIB
The shifted Schur measure introduced by Tracy and Widom is a measure on the set of all strict partitions, which is defined by Schur $Q$-functions. The main aim of this paper is to calculate the correlation function of this measure, which is given by a pfaffian. As an application, we prove that a limit distribution of $λ_j$'s with respect to a shifted version of the Plancherel measure for symmetric groups is identical with the corresponding distribution of the original Plancherel measure. Further we give expressions of the mean value and the variance of the size of a partition with respect to the measure defined by Hall-Littlewood functions.
