Eigenvalue Bounds for Random Matrices via Zerofreeness
We introduce a new technique to prove bounds for the spectral radius of a random matrix, based on using Jensen's formula to establish the zerofreeness of the associated characteristic polynomial in a region of the complex plane. Our techniques are entirely non-asymptotic, and we instantiate it in three settings:
(i) The spectral radius of non-asymptotic Girko matrices -- these are asymmetric matrices $\mathbf{M} \in \mathbb{C}^{n \times n}$ whose entries are independent and satisfy $\mathbb{E} \mathbf{M}_{ij} = 0$ and $\mathbb{E} |\mathbf{M}_{ij}^2| \le \frac{1}{n}$.
(ii) The spectral radius of non-asymptotic Wigner matrices -- these are symmetric matrices $\mathbf{M} \in \mathbb{C}^{n \times n}$ whose entries above the diagonal are independent and satisfy $\mathbb{E} \mathbf{M}_{ij} = 0$, $\mathbb{E} |\mathbf{M}_{ij}^2| \le \frac{1}{n}$, and $\mathbb{E} |\mathbf{M}_{ij}^4| \le \frac{1}{n}$.
(iii) The second eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix of a random $d$-regular graph on $n$ vertices, as drawn from the configuration model.
In all three settings, we obtain constant-probability eigenvalue bounds that are tight up to a constant. Applied to specific random matrix ensembles, we recover classic bounds for Wigner matrices, as well as results of Bordenave--Chafaï--García-Zelada, Bordenave--Lelarge--Massoulié, and Friedman, up to constants.
Spectra of high-dimensional sparse random geometric graphs
We analyze the spectral properties of the high-dimensional random geometric graph $G(n, d, p)$, formed by sampling $n$ i.i.d vectors $\{v_i\}_{i=1}^{n}$ uniformly on a $d$-dimensional unit sphere and connecting each pair $\{i,j\}$ whenever $\langle v_i, v_j \rangle \geq τ$ so that $p=\mathbb P(\langle v_i,v_j\rangle \geq τ)$. This model defines a nonlinear random matrix ensemble with dependent entries. We show that if $d =ω( np\log^{2}(1/p))$ and $np\to\infty$, the limiting spectral distribution of the normalized adjacency matrix $\frac{A}{\sqrt{np(1-p)}}$ is the semicircle law. To our knowledge, this is the first such result for $G(n, d, p)$ in the sparse regime. In the constant sparsity case $p=α/n$, we further show that if $d=ω(\log^2(n))$ the limiting spectral distribution of $A$ in $G(n,α/n)$ coincides with that of the Erdős-Rényi graph $G(n,α/n)$.
Our approach combines the classical moment method in random matrix theory with a novel recursive decomposition of closed-walk graphs, leveraging block-cut trees and ear decompositions, to control the moments of the empirical spectral distribution. A refined high trace analysis further yields a near-optimal bound on the second eigenvalue when $np=Ω(\log^4 (n))$, removing technical conditions previously imposed in (Liu et al. 2023). As an application, we demonstrate that this improved eigenvalue bound sharpens the parameter requirements on $d$ and $p$ for spontaneous synchronization on random geometric graphs in (Abdalla et al. 2024) under the homogeneous Kuramoto model.

We develop a framework for establishing the Law of Large Numbers for the eigenvalues in the random matrix ensembles as the size of the matrix goes to infinity simultaneously with the beta (inverse temperature) parameter going to zero. Our approach is based on the analysis of the (symmetric) Dunkl transform in this regime. As an application we obtain the LLN for the sums of random matrices as the inverse temperature goes to 0. This results in a one-parameter family of binary operations which interpolates between classical and free convolutions of the probability measures. We also introduce and study a family of deformed cumulants, which linearize this operation.
Muttalib--Borodin plane partitions and the hard edge of random matrix ensembles
We study probabilistic and combinatorial aspects of natural volume-and-trace weighted plane partitions and their continuous analogues. We prove asymptotic limit laws for the largest parts of these ensembles in terms of new and known hard- and soft-edge distributions of random matrix theory. As a corollary we obtain an asymptotic transition between Gumbel and Tracy--Widom GUE fluctuations for the largest part of such plane partitions, with the continuous Bessel kernel providing the interpolation. We interpret our results in terms of two natural models of directed last passage percolation (LPP): a discrete $(\max, +)$ infinite-geometry model with rapidly decaying geometric weights, and a continuous $(\min, \cdot)$ model with power weights.

G. Anderson and B. Farrel showed that conjugation of constant matrices by asymptotically liberating random unitary matrices give rise to asymptotic free independence. Independent Haar-unitary random matrices and independent Haar-orthogonal random matrices are examples of asymptotically liberating ensembles. In this paper, we investigate the fluctuation moments, and higher order moments, induced on constant matrices by conjugation with asymptotically liberating ensembles. In particular, we determine fluctuation moments induced by an ensembles related to the Discrete Fourier Transform matrix.

We employ a multivariate extension of the Gauss quadrature formula, originally due to Berens, Schmid and Xu [BSX95], so as to derive cubature rules for the integration of symmetric functions over hypercubes (or infinite limiting degenerations thereof) with respect to the densities of unitary random matrix ensembles. Our main application concerns the explicit implementation of a class of cubature rules associated with the Bernstein-Szegö polynomials, which permit the exact integration of symmetric rational functions with prescribed poles at coordinate hyperplanes against unitary circular Jacobi distributions stemming from the Haar measures on the symplectic and the orthogonal groups.

Three operations on eigenvalues of real/complex/quaternion (corresponding to $β=1,2,4$) matrices, obtained from cutting out principal corners, adding, and multiplying matrices can be extrapolated to general values of $β>0$ through associated special functions.
We show that $β\to\infty$ limit for these operations leads to the finite free projection, additive convolution, and multiplicative convolution, respectively.
The limit is the most transparent for cutting out the corners, where the joint distribution of the eigenvalues of principal corners of a uniformly-random general $β$ self-adjoint matrix with fixed eigenvalues is known as $β$-corners process. We show that as $β\to\infty$ these eigenvalues crystallize on the irregular lattice of all the roots of derivatives of a single polynomial. In the second order, we observe a version of the discrete Gaussian Free Field (dGFF) put on top of this lattice, which provides a new explanation of why the (continuous) Gaussian Free Field governs the global asymptotics of random matrix ensembles.
Bulk Eigenvalue Correlation Statistics of Random Biregular Bipartite Graphs
This paper is the second chapter of three of the author's undergraduate thesis. In this paper, we consider the random matrix ensemble given by $(d_b, d_w)$-regular graphs on $M$ black vertices and $N$ white vertices, where $d_b \in [N^γ, N^{2/3 - γ}]$ for any $γ> 0$. We simultaneously prove that the bulk eigenvalue correlation statistics for both normalized adjacency matrices and their corresponding covariance matrices are stable for short times. Combined with an ergodicity analysis of the Dyson Brownian motion in another paper, this proves universality of bulk eigenvalue correlation statistics, matching normalized adjacency matrices with the GOE and the corresponding covariance matrices with the Gaussian Wishart Ensemble.
Local Marchenko-Pastur Law for Random Bipartite Graphs
This paper is the first chapter of three of the author's undergraduate thesis. We study the random matrix ensemble of covariance matrices arising from random $(d_b, d_w)$-regular bipartite graphs on a set of $M$ black vertices and $N$ white vertices, for $d_b \gg \log^4 N$. We simultaneously prove that the Green's functions of these covariance matrices and the adjacency matrices of the underlying graphs agree with the corresponding limiting law (e.g. Marchenko-Pastur law for covariance matrices) down to the optimal scale. This is an improvement from the previously known mesoscopic results. We obtain eigenvector delocalization for the covariance matrix ensemble as consequence, as well as a weak rigidity estimate.
Asymptotic Behavior of the Expectation Value of Permanent Products, a Sequel
Continuing the computations of the previous paper,[1], we calculate another approximation to the expectation value of the product of two permanents in the ensemble of 0-1 n x n matrices with like row and column sums equal r uniformly weighted. Here we consider the Bernoulli random matrix ensemble where each entry independently has a probability p=r/n of being one, otherwise zero. We denote the expectations of the approximation ensemble of [1] by E, and the expectations of the present approximation ensemble, the Bernoulli random matrix ensemble, by E*. One has for these
lim_{r to infinity}( lim_{n to infinity} (1/n) ln(E(perm_m(A)))
-lim_{n to infinity} (1/n) ln(E*(perm_m(A))) ) = 0 and
lim_{n to infinity} (1/n) ln(E(perm_m(A)perm_m'(A))) =
lim_{n to infinity} (1/n) ln(E(perm_m(A))) +
lim_{n to infinity} (1/n) ln(E(perm_m'(A)))
Here and in all such formulas the subscripts m,m' are assumed proportional to n. It seems likely to us that
lim_{r to infinity}( lim_{n to infinity} (1/n) ln(E*(perm_m(A)perm_m'(A)))
- lim_{n to infinity} (1/n) ln(E*(perm_m(A))) +
- lim_{n to infinity} (1/n) ln(E*(perm_m'(A))) ) = 0
We believe: "E gives us the `correct' expectations in these equations, and E* is only `correct' in the r to infinity limit."

This paper is concerned with the asymptotic behavior of the free energy for a class of Hermitean random matrix models, with odd degree polynomial potential, in the large N limit. It continues an investigation initiated and developed in a sequence of prior works whose ultimate aim is to reveal and understand, in a rigorous way, the deep connections between correlation functions for eigenvalues of these random matrix ensembles on the one hand and the enumerative interpretations of their matrix moments in terms of map combinatorics (a branch of graph theory) on the other. In doing this we make essential use of the link between the asymptotics of the random matrix partition function and orthogonal polynomials with exponential weight equal to the random matrix potential. Along the way we develop and analyze the continuum limits of both the hierarchy of Toda lattice equations and the hierarchy of difference string equations associated to these orthogonal polynomials. The former are found to have the structure of a hierarchy of near-conservation laws universal in the potential; the latter are a novel semi-classical extension of the traditional string equations. Our methods apply to regular maps of both even and odd valence, however we focus on the latter since that is the relevant case for this paper. These methods enable us to rigorously determine closed form expressions for the generating functions that enumerate trivalent maps, in general implicitly, but also explictly in a number of cases.

We express the averages of products of characteristic polynomials for random matrix ensembles associated with compact symmetric spaces in terms of Jack polynomials or Heckman and Opdam's Jacobi polynomials depending on the root system of the space. We also give explicit expressions for the asymptotic behavior of these averages in the limit as the matrix size goes to infinity.

We suggest an hierarchy of all the results known so far about the connection of the asymptotics of combinatorial or representation theoretic problems with ``beta=2 ensembles'' arising in the random matrix theory. We show that all such results are, essentially, degenerations of one general situation arising from so-called generalized regular representations of the infinite symmetric group.

We consider the distributions of the lengths of the longest weakly increasing and strongly decreasing subsequences in words of length N from an alphabet of k letters. We find Toeplitz determinant representations for the exponential generating functions (on N) of these distribution functions and show that they are expressible in terms of solutions of Painlevé V equations. We show further that in the weakly increasing case the generating function gives the distribution of the smallest eigenvalue in the k x k Laguerre random matrix ensemble and that the distribution itself has, after centering and normalizing, an N -> infinity limit which is equal to the distribution function for the largest eigenvalue in the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble of k x k hermitian matrices of trace zero.
