Pfaffian--Toeplitz identities, Schur positivity, and the $q$-log-convexity of Baxter polynomials
We use the Pfaffian minor summation formula together with Jacobi--Trudi Toeplitz matrices to derive Pfaffian expansions in skew Schur functions. This yields explicit Schur expansions for several generating functions involving products of skew Schur functions. In particular, using sparse skew-symmetric matrices, we provide a Pfaffian proof of a Schur-positive identity arising in the study of the $q$-log-convexity of the Narayana polynomials. As the main application, we prove that the Baxter polynomials form a $q$-log-convex sequence. We further show that the Baxter transformation defined by the refined Baxter numbers preserves log-convexity. Finally, by realizing the $q$-refined Baxter numbers as principal specializations of rectangular Schur functions, we prove that the array of $q$-refined Baxter numbers is $q$-log-concave both along each row and along each column. Both $q$-log-concavity results extend naturally to the $q$-analogues of the $d$-Hoggatt numbers.
The Partition Pairing Theorems I
The aim of this paper is to introduce pairing theory for partitions. We begin with two statistics on integer partitions, the \emph{pairing index} and the \emph{pairing rank}. The pairing index is equidistributed with the number of parts, while a joint refinement identifies its two constituents with the numbers of even and odd parts. We further introduce the \emph{pairing width} and prove that pairing index and pairing width are jointly equidistributed with the number of parts and the largest part. The resulting finite Gaussian generating function has a cyclotomic factorization from which Kummer's famous carry theorem for binomial coefficients follows. We also prove a mod-$5$ congruence for the excess of unpaired parts congruent to $1$ modulo $4$ over those congruent to $3$ modulo $4$ in the partitions of $5n+4$. A signed specialization exhibits that the parity of the pairing rank is governed by self-conjugate partitions. Motivated by this, we go on to introduce a second, diagrammatic pairing: after the two wings of the Durfee square are folded together, the unpaired cells break into connected \emph{diagonal blocks}. These blocks may be reflected independently, giving a Boolean decomposition of the set of partitions with a unique representative having all successive ranks nonnegative. We then relate our theory to overpartitions and Frobenius representations, obtaining as a corollary a geometric realization of overpartitions in terms of partitions whose principal hooks are all even. Finally, we study simply paired partitions of negative pairing rank, obtaining identities involving odd divisors and overpartitions, a parity theorem for pairing rank $-2$, and a Toeplitz determinant whose coefficientwise limit is an explicit infinite product related to MacMahon's product for plane partitions.

A classical problem in graph theory known as the Italian domination number(also called Roman 2-domination number), involves assigning labels of 0, 1,or 2 to each node v. The goal is to ensure that every node with a label of 0 has a sum of labels of the nodes in its closed neighborhood that is 2 or greater. In computer systems, it is coined encompassing a robust cyber security strategy that will protect networks from potential threats, such as hacking, malware, and unauthorized access, by deploying security measures to provide the highest level of protection while reducing the misuse of resources. Toeplitz graphs are a special kind of graphs built over Toeplitz matrices from linear algebra, which are matrices with constant straight diagonal members. In this paper, we provide a detailed analysis regarding the Italian domination numbers for every Toeplitz graph family. We provide comprehensive results on Italian domination numbers across multiple graph families and identify the specific values at which the Italian domination number alters with increasing generator values.
Redundant moments of non-melonic random tensor models: simplifying the tensor bootstrap
We prove the redundancy of a family (the so-called melonic family) of large-$N$ moments in arbitrary tensor models. This reduces the number of independent entries in the positive semidefinite matrices that build the core of the tensor bootstrap (for tensor models there are already several generalizations of the positive semidefinite Toeplitz and Hankel matrices of lattice gauge theory and random matrix bootstrap, respectively). More concretely, we prove that any melonic operator $C$ at large-$N$ has an expectation value that depends on $C$ exclusively through its degree. A similar statement is shown here to hold for the Schwinger-Dyson equations of melonic moments. The strength of our result is also its scope, which is not limited to melonic tensor models.
Grassmannian quantum cohomology in the infinite limit and total positivity
The theory of total positivity was shown by Lusztig to be intrinsically linked to the canonical basis with its positivity properties. When we restrict ourselves to studying total positivity just for the set of lower-triangular unipotent Toeplitz matrices, say in type $A$, then there is a similar link with the quantum cohomology rings of flag varieties and the Schubert bases and their positivity properties. Namely, this builds on a theory of Dale Peterson that gives a uniform Lie-theoretic description of all of the quantum cohomology rings $qH^*(G/P)$. In a precursor to this paper, the Schubert basis and quantum parameters in $qH^*(SL_n/B)$, which restrict to positive-valued functions on totally positive Toeplitz matrices, were analysed with respect to their limiting behaviour as $n\to\infty$, uncovering a novel connection with the classical Edrei theorem on parametrising the infinite totally positive Toeplitz matrices. In this paper we study the Grassmannian case, using the conventions from the $SL_{n}/B$ setting as a guide, and we determine the quantum parameter and Schubert class asymptotics in different scenarios. Along the way, we obtain a new interpretation of the strange duality involution on the localised quantum cohomolgy ring of the Grassmannian. Finally, we prove an asymptotic formula for quantum parameters in a partial flag setting, and we furthermore formulate some conjectures concerning partial flag varieties and related quantum cohomology asymptotics.
Tribonacci properties of identities, matrices, and determinants
This paper considers the properties of Tribonacci numbers on identities, matrices, and determinants. In the first front part, we obtain several symmetric identities of Tribonacci numbers by a matrix-based approach and binomial inversion technique. In the core section of the latter half, we present a determinant representation of Tribonacci numbers in a slightly modified Toeplitz--Hessenberg form derived from Bell polynomials.
Toeplitz matrices from permutation displacements and the triangular kernel
Toeplitz matrices arise naturally in harmonic analysis, operator theory, and numerical analysis. In this note we investigate Toeplitz matrices whose coefficients depend on the matrix size through a scaled kernel $a_k=f(k/n)$. We show that the empirical mean of their eigenvalues converges to a weighted integral of $f$, where the weight $1-|x|$ reflects the density of diagonals in Toeplitz matrices. We then introduce a combinatorial construction associating a Toeplitz matrix to a permutation via its displacement counts. For a uniformly random permutation, the expected matrix converges to the Toeplitz matrix generated by the triangular kernel $1-|x|$. Interestingly, the triangular kernel also appears as the covariance function of the integrated Brownian motion, providing a probabilistic interpretation of the same operator. Finally, we analyze the integral operator with kernel $(1-|x-y|)$ on $[0,1]$ and determine its eigenfunctions and eigenvalues explicitly. This operator describes the limiting spectral structure associated with the averaged Toeplitz matrices arising from permutation displacements. These results highlight a natural bridge between Toeplitz matrix theory, permutation statistics, and classical integral operators.
Double Toeplitz codes and their average weight enumerators
Recently, double Toeplitz codes have been introduced as a generalization of double circulant codes. In this paper, we study the average weight enumerators of double Toeplitz codes. As an application, we consider the existence of double Toeplitz codes over $\mathbb{F}_q$ with some specified minimum weights for $q \in \{2,3,4\}$. We also give a classification of double Toeplitz codes over $\mathbb{F}_q$ with the largest minimum weights for modest lengths and $q \in \{2,3,4\}$.
Symbols frequencies in the Thue--Morse word in base $3/2$ and related conjectures
We study a binary Thue--Morse-type sequence arising from the base-$3/2$ expansion of integers, an archetypal automatic sequence in a rational base numeration system. Because the sequence is generated by a periodic iteration of morphisms rather than a single primitive substitution, classical Perron--Frobenius methods do not directly apply to determine symbol frequencies. We prove that both symbols ${\tt 0},{\tt 1}$ occur with frequency $1/2$ and we show uniform recurrence and symmetry properties of its set of factors. The proof reveals a structural bridge between combinatorics on words and harmonic analysis: the first difference sequence is shown to be Toeplitz, providing dynamical rigidity, while filtered frequencies naturally encode a dyadic structure that lifts to the compact group of $2$-adic integers. In this $2$-adic setting, desubstitution becomes a linear operator on Fourier coefficients, and a spectral contraction argument enforces uniqueness of limiting densities. Our results answer several conjectures of Dekking (on a sibling sequence) and illustrate how harmonic analysis on compact groups can be fruitfully combined with substitution dynamics.
Corrigendum to "Higher Lorentzian polynomials,...in codimension two" [International Mathematics Research Notices, Volume 2025, Issue 13, July 2025, arXiv:2208.05653]
A homogeneous bivariate $d$-form defines an $(i+1)$-rowed Toeplitz matrix for each $i$ between $0$ and $d$. We use Hodge theory and Schur polynomials to prove that if the $(i+1)$-rowed Toeplitz matrix of a form is totally nonnegative, then so is the $i$-rowed one. This fixes a gap in the main result of paper above.
Efficient $k$-Sign Consistency Verification of Hankel Matrices via Schur Polynomials
We consider the problem of certifying (strict) $k$-sign consistency of a matrix, that is, whether all of its $k$-th order minors share the same (strict) sign. Although this problem is generally of combinatorial complexity, we show that for Hankel matrices it can be significantly simplified: our sufficient condition requires checking only the $k$-th order minors of a reshaped Hankel matrix with $k$ rows. Remarkably, when applied to the Hankel operator, this sufficient condition is also necessary. Comparable results were known only in the setting of (strictly) $k$-positive Hankel matrices and operators, in which all minors of order up to $k$ have the same (strict) sign.
More concretely, we derive a formula expressing the $k$-th order minors of Hankel matrices as nonnegative integer linear combinations of $k$-th order minors with consecutive row indices. Our derivation uses Schur polynomial theory to show that the $k$-th order minors of any matrix are nonnegative integer linear combinations of row-consecutive $k$-th order minors, meaning minors formed from distinct columns whose consecutive row indices need not coincide across columns. For Hankel matrices, these minors coincide -- up to sign changes arising from column swaps -- with the usual $k$-th order minors with consecutive row indices. Our main result then follows by showing that the sum of certain signed nonnegative integer coefficients equals the corresponding Littlewood--Richardson coefficients. In our problem, the nonnegativity of these coefficients ensures that negatively signed column permutations are cancelled by positively signed ones. Our results also extend naturally to Toeplitz matrices and operators, and we present a partial analogue for circulant matrices.
Factorizations of Matrices With Recursive Entries and Related Topics
This article examines matrices whose entries are determined by recursive relations of the form $A_{i, j} = x A_{i, j-1} + y A_{i-1, j-1} + z A_{i-1, j}$, where $x, y, z$ are constants, and the initial conditions are defined along the first row and column. We present a general decomposition for such matrices and show that many of the known decompositions are particular cases of this more general decomposition. Additionally, we provide a decomposition of these matrices into Pascal-like matrices and a basic Toeplitz matrix.
On maximal rank properties for symmetric polynomials in an equigenerated monomial complete intersection
It is well known that a monomial complete intersection has the strong Lefschetz property in characteristic zero. This property is equivalent to the statement that any power of the sum of the variables is a maximal rank element on the complete intersection. In this paper, we investigate what happens when this element is replaced by another symmetric polynomial, in an equigenerated complete intersection.
We answer the question completely for the power sum symmetric polynomial using a grading technique, and for any Schur polynomial in the case of two variables by deriving a closed formula for the determinants of a family of Toeplitz matrices. Further, we obtain partial results in three or more variables for the elementary and the complete homogeneous symmetric polynomials and pose several open questions.
Proof of Convergence of a Laplace Expansion Algorithm For Calculating Recursions Satisfied by a Family of Determinants
In Evan and Hendel's recent proof of an outstanding conjecture on the resistance distances of a family of linear 3-trees, a key technique in the proof was calculating the recursion satisfied by a family of determinants. The underlying algorithm employed to prove the conjecture converged (i.e. terminated) in the particular case studied, and the paper presented an open question on when such a procedure converges in general. This paper proves convergence of the procedure for an arbitrary family of determinants of banded, square, Toeplitz matrices. Moreover, the algorithm in this paper improves several aspects of the algorithm of Evans and Hendel.
A unified planar network approach to total positivity of combinatorial matrices and real-rootedness of polynomials
We present a common sufficient condition for the total positivity of combinatorial triangles and their reversals, as well as the real-rootedness of generating functions of the rows. The proof technique is to construct a unified planar network that represent the matrix, its reversal, and the Toeplitz matrices of rows, respectively, when selecting different sets of sources and sinks. These results can be applied to the exponential Riordan arrays, the iteration matrices and the $n$-recursive matrices. As consequences, we prove the total positivity and real-rootedness properties associated to many well-known combinatorial numbers, including the Stirling numbers of both kinds (of type A and type B), the Lah numbers, the idempotent numbers, the Delannoy numbers, and the derangement numbers of type A and type B.
Hadamard Products of dual Jacobi-Trudi matrices
We study positivity properties of Hadamard products of Jacobi-Trudi matrices. Maló proved that the Hadamard (entrywise) product of two totally positive upper-triangular Toeplitz matrices whose Toeplitz sequences are the coefficient sequences of real-rooted polynomials with nonpositive zeros is again totally positive. Sokal conjectured that this result can be strengthened to total monomial positivity for the Hadamard product of Jacobi-Trudi matrices. In this paper we show that Temperley-Lieb immanants are Schur positive for Hadamard products of Jacobi-Trudi matrices given by ribbon-like skew shapes. In particular, we affirm Sokal's conjecture for minors given by ribbon-like skew shapes. Moreover, we provide a manifestly positive Schur expansion for Temperley-Lieb immanants evaluated on the Hadamard product of Jacobi-Trudi matrices indexed by ribbons. In addition, for the ribbon case, we construct a corresponding representation, offering a representation-theoretic proof of the Schur positivity.
Totally positive Toeplitz matrices: classical and modern
By a theorem of Edrei, an infinite, normalised totally nonnegative upper-triangular Toeplitz matrix is determined by a pair of nonnegative parameter sequences, the `Schoenberg parameters', where nonzero parameters correspond to the roots and poles of a naturally associated generating function. These totally nonnegative Toeplitz matrices and their parameters also arise in the classification of characters of the infinite symmetric group by later work of Thoma. Moreover the Schoenberg parameters have an asymptotic interpretation in terms of irreducible representations of S_n and their Young diagrams by Vershik-Kerov. In this article we consider infinite totally positive Toeplitz matrices as limits of finite ones, and we obtain two further asymptotic descriptions of the Schoenberg parameters that are now related to quantum cohomology of the flag variety as n goes to infinity. One is related to asymptotics of normalised quantum parameters, and the other to asymptotics of the Chern classes of the tautological line bundles. We also describe the asymptotics of (quantum) Schubert classes in terms of the Schoenberg parameters. Our limit formulas relate to and were motivated by a tropical analogue of this theory that we survey. In the tropical setting one finds an asymptotic relationship between the `tropical Schoenberg parameters' and the weight map from Lusztig's parametrisation of the canonical basis.
Chow polynomials of totally nonnegative matrices and posets
Huh-Stevens and Ferroni-Schröter independently conjectured that Hilbert-Poincaré series of Chow rings of geometric lattices have only real zeros. Ferroni, Matherne and the second author extended this conjecture to Chow polynomials of Cohen-Macaulay poset. In this paper we address the above conjectures by providing new defining relations and properties of Chow functions of posets and matrices. These are used, in conjunction with new techniques on interlacing sequences of polynomials, to prove that Chow polynomials of totally nonnegative matrices have only real zeros, which, in turn, proves the above conjectures for a class of posets that contains projective and affine geometries, face lattices of cubical polytopes, partition lattices and Dowling lattices, perfect matroid designs, and lattices of flats of paving matroids. We also study Chow polynomials of Toeplitz matrices in greater detail, and show how these are related the combinatorics of binomial and Sheffer posets, as well as to a family of generalized Eulerian polynomials with coefficients in the ring of symmetric polynomials that have been studied by e.g. Stanley, Brenti, Stembridge and Shareshian-Wachs.
Linear-Time Computation of the Frobenius Normal Form for Symmetric Toeplitz Matrices via Graph-Theoretic Decomposition
We introduce a linear-time algorithm for computing the Frobenius normal form (FNF) of symmetric Toeplitz matrices by utilizing their inherent structural properties through a graph-theoretic approach. Previous results of the authors established that the FNF of a symmetric Toeplitz matrix is explicitly represented as a direct sum of symmetric irreducible Toeplitz matrices, each corresponding to connected components in an associated weighted Toeplitz graph. Conventional matrix decomposition algorithms, such as Storjohann's method (1998), typically have cubic-time complexity. Moreover, standard graph component identification algorithms, such as breadth-first or depth-first search, operate linearly with respect to vertices and edges, translating to quadratic-time complexity solely in terms of vertices for dense graphs like weighted Toeplitz graphs. Our method uniquely leverages the structural regularities of weighted Toeplitz graphs, achieving linear-time complexity strictly with respect to vertices through two novel reductions: the α-type reduction, which eliminates isolated vertices, and the β-type reduction, applying residue class contractions to achieve rapid structural simplifications while preserving component structure. These reductions facilitate an efficient recursive decomposition process that yields linear-time performance for both graph component identification and the resulting FNF computation. This work highlights how structured combinatorial representations can lead to significant computational gains in symbolic linear algebra.
Total positivity of Hadamard product of dual Jacobi--Trudi matrices
In 1992, Wagner proved that the Hadamard product of two totally positive lower triangular Toeplitz matrices is totally positive. In this work, we strengthen this result by establishing total monomial positivity for the Hadamard product of Jacobi--Trudi matrices. In particular, we resolve a conjecture of Sokal concerning the Hadamard square of Jacobi--Trudi matrices. Moreover, we provide a manifestly positive Schur expansion for the Hadamard square of Jacobi--Trudi matrices indexed by ribbons. In addition, we construct a corresponding representation, offering a representation-theoretic proof of the Schur positivity.
