Eulerian insertion operators and an Eulerian form of the Pieri rule
We study the operators obtained by inserting copies of a new largest letter into multiset permutations. Let $G_r$ denote the operator which inserts $r$ copies of a new largest letter. After the change of variables $δ=y-x$, $u=x/y$, and $E=u\partial_u$, we find that $$G_r=\frac{δ^r}{r!}E(E+1)\cdots(E+r-1).$$ Its generating series acts by a rational substitution, which yields the composition law. Our main result gives a common symmetric-function explanation for the ordinary and major-index operators. For $N\geq 0$, define $Φ_N(F_{N,S})=x^{|S|+1}y^{N-|S|}$. We prove that multiplication by the complete homogeneous symmetric function $h_r$ becomes the ordinary insertion operator: $Φ_{N+r}(h_r f)=G_rΦ_N(f)$, where $f\in\mathrm{QSym}_N$. There is a parallel specialization for the major index. A reverse finite principal specialization sends multiplication by $h_r$ to an operator $Q_r$, which is a polynomial in the $q$-shift $Θ_qf(t)=f(qt)$. Thus the ordinary and major-index operators arise from the same multiplication operator $f\mapsto h_r f$. Since the functions $h_r$ freely generate the ring of symmetric functions, the assignment $h_r\mapsto G_r$ extends to an algebra homomorphism. We determine the kernel of this homomorphism and the image of every homogeneous component. The images of Schur functions satisfy the Littlewood--Richardson multiplication identities, and the one-row case gives an Eulerian form of the Pieri rule.

Pfaffian--Toeplitz identities, Schur positivity, and the $q$-log-convexity of Baxter polynomials
We use the Pfaffian minor summation formula together with Jacobi--Trudi Toeplitz matrices to derive Pfaffian expansions in skew Schur functions. This yields explicit Schur expansions for several generating functions involving products of skew Schur functions. In particular, using sparse skew-symmetric matrices, we provide a Pfaffian proof of a Schur-positive identity arising in the study of the $q$-log-convexity of the Narayana polynomials. As the main application, we prove that the Baxter polynomials form a $q$-log-convex sequence. We further show that the Baxter transformation defined by the refined Baxter numbers preserves log-convexity. Finally, by realizing the $q$-refined Baxter numbers as principal specializations of rectangular Schur functions, we prove that the array of $q$-refined Baxter numbers is $q$-log-concave both along each row and along each column. Both $q$-log-concavity results extend naturally to the $q$-analogues of the $d$-Hoggatt numbers.

Closed formulas for energy functions on tensor squares of higher-level perfect crystals in classical affine types
For every $l\geq1$, we construct explicit closed-form coordinate formulas for the local energy functions on the tensor products $B_l\otimes B_l$ of level-$l$ perfect crystals in classical affine types. A single finite-level max-linear formula covers all seven types: its two branches coincide in type $A_n^{(1)}$, yielding a cyclic maximum of partial sums, whereas in the remaining six types each branch is the maximum of finitely many explicit piecewise-linear expressions in barred coordinates, with type-dependent boundary data. We verify the defining local-energy recursion directly on the finite crystals and derive equivalent recursive forms, allowing the energy to be evaluated without applying the combinatorial $R$-matrix. Substitution into the KMN path character formula gives explicit positive coordinate path sums for the characters of all level-$l$ integrable highest weight modules. After principal specialization, the path exponent can be rewritten as a weighted sum of a position-independent adjacent-pair statistic; comparison with the specialized Weyl--Kac character formula yields a uniform family of level-$l$ Rogers--Ramanujan-type identities equating these sums with explicit infinite products. For a representative low-rank case at level two in each family, we display the complete adjacent-pair degree matrix and list the resulting identities.

Mixed Products of Modified Greaves--Jing--Zhu Operators
Let $\mathcal Y(z;t)$ be the modified Greaves--Jing--Zhu operator on the odd power-sum ring. We first point out that this operator can be obtained from the classical neutral operator by a simple diagonal change of variables. We then study products in which the two deformation parameters are not necessarily the same. For two parameters $t$ and $s$, we compute the scalar factor that appears in the mixed product. This factor has an explicit exponential form and, in a completed setting, can also be written as a quotient of infinite $t$-Pochhammer products. We also give a recurrence for its coefficients, a product formula for several mixed operators, and formulas for the coefficients obtained after applying the operators to $\mathbf 1$. A particularly simple case occurs when $s=t^M$. In this case the scalar factor becomes the finite quotient $(u;t)_M/(-u;t)_M$. Its coefficients are signed principal specializations of one-row Schur $Q$-functions. As a result, after removing the signs, these coefficients are nonnegative palindromic polynomials. We also give a Gaussian-binomial formula and a finite-order recurrence.

Principal minors of effective-resistance matrices and local resistance radii
Let $G$ be a finite connected weighted graph and let $R$ be its effective-resistance matrix. For every nonempty vertex set $S$, we factor the cofactor sum and determinant of the principal resistance submatrix $R[S]$ into an enumerative term and a boundary potential-theoretic term. If $τ(G)$ is the weighted spanning tree enumerator and $κ_G(S)$ is the weighted enumerator of $S$-rooted spanning forests, then \[ \cof R[S]=(-2)^{|S|-1}κ_G(S)/τ(G). \] After Kron reduction to $S$, with reduced Laplacian $K=L^S$, $Q=K^+$, and $q=\diag(Q)$, the remaining normalized factor is \[ \det R[S]/\cof R[S] =\frac{2}{|S|}\tr Q+\frac12 q^{\mathsf T}Kq. \] The cofactor factor is a principal specialization of known resistance-minor identities; the contribution here is the boundary/Kron-reduction factorization and local radius calculus. Equivalently, the normalized factor is the maximum of $u^{\mathsf T}R[S]u$ over all $u\in\R^S$ satisfying $\one^{\mathsf T}u=1$. This optimization viewpoint yields monotonicity under enlargement of $S$, an exact one-point update formula, and a support criterion for equality. Small star examples show that the resulting set function is neither submodular nor supermodular in general.

Principal specializations of Grothendieck polynomials
Motivated by Stanley's ``Schubert shenanigans'' paper, commendable attempts have been made to understand the principal specializations of Schubert or Grothendieck polynomials. In this paper, we prove that when a permutation $w$ does not contain the $1423$ pattern, the principal specialization of the corresponding $β$-Grothendieck polynomial can be expressed nonnegatively in terms of the occurrences of patterns in $w$. Using an inverse conservation principle, we further obtain the nonnegativity expansion for permutations avoiding the $1342$ pattern. Our results partially resolve conjectures raised respectively by Gao (independently observed by Gaetz), Meśzáros--Tanjaya, and Dennin. The proofs are achieved based upon a reduction algorithm performing on the classic pipe dream model of $β$-Grothendieck polynomials.

Computation and sampling for Schubert specializations
We present computational results on principal specializations $\mathfrak{S}_w(1^n)$ of Schubert polynomials, which count reduced pipe dreams and reduced bumpless pipe dreams (RBPD). We find the first counterexample, at $n=17$, to the Merzon-Smirnov conjecture (arXiv:1410.6857) that the maximum of $\mathfrak{S}_w(1^n)$ over $S_n$ is attained at a layered permutation. The simulations suggest that $\lim_{n \to \infty} \log(\max_{w\in S_n}\mathfrak{S}_w(1^n))/n^2$ equals the maximal layered permutations' constant from Morales-Pak-Panova (arXiv:1805.04341). We also explore the random permutation drawn from the distribution proportional to $\mathfrak{S}_w(1^n)$, revealing permuton-like asymptotics similar to those for Grothendieck polynomials by Morales-Panova-Petrov-Yeliussizov (arXiv:2407.21653). We implement and compare three recurrences for $\mathfrak{S}_w(1^n)$: the descent formula (Macdonald), transition formula (Lascoux--Schutzenberger), and cotransition formula (Knutson). For sampling uniformly random RBPDs (whose count is $\sum_{w\in S_n} \mathfrak{S}_w(1^n)$), we show that reducedness breaks the sublattice property of the ASM lattice, preventing monotone CFTP and causing false coalescence. We develop an efficient MCMC sampler with macroscopic "droop" updates for connectivity and fast mixing. Our code computes $\mathfrak{S}_w(1^n)$ up to $n\sim 20$ and samples random RBPDs up to $n\sim 60$ on a personal computer ($n\sim 100$ on a cluster).

Rogers-Ramanujan type identities at $Λ_0$ from perfect crystals of exceptional quantum affine algebras
We derive Rogers--Ramanujan type partition identities at the fundamental weight $Λ_0$ for the exceptional affine types $G_2^{(1)}$, $D_4^{(3)}$, $F_4^{(1)}$, $E_6^{(2)}$, $E_6^{(1)}$, $E_7^{(1)}$ and $E_8^{(1)}$. Our starting point is the Dousse--Konan reformulation of the $(\mathrm{KMN})^2$ crystal character formula, applied to the level-one perfect crystal $B=B(θ)\sqcup B(0)$ of Benkart--Frenkel--Kang--Lee with ground element $φ\in B(0)$. This realizes the normalized character $e^{-Λ_0}\mathrm{ch} L(Λ_0)$ as generating functions of grounded $B$-colored partitions governed locally by the crystal energy. After principal specialization, we obtain a colored partition model subject to explicit difference, congruence, and initial conditions. On the product side, under the same specialization, the Weyl--Kac character formula yields an explicit Euler-type product, equivalently the generating function for partitions with parts in a concrete allowed set. Comparing the two specializations gives coefficientwise equalities of generating functions. A key computational feature is that the difference matrix can be produced from the crystal data without explicitly computing the energy function. For each type we tabulate the congruence data, forbidden initial parts, and the full difference matrix, and we provide reproducible coefficient checks.

Schubert polynomials and patterns in permutations
This paper investigates the number of supports of the Schubert polynomial $\mathfrak{S}_w(x)$ indexed by a permutation $w$. This number also equals the number of lattice points in the Newton polytope of $\mathfrak{S}_w(x)$. We establish a lower bound for this number in terms of the occurrences of patterns in $w$. The analysis is carried out in the general framework of dual characters of flagged Weyl modules. Our result considerably improves the bounds for principal specializations of Schubert polynomials or dual flagged Weyl characters previously obtained by Weigandt, Gao, and M{é}sz{á}ros--St. Dizier--Tanjaya. Some problems and conjectures are discussed.

$c$-functions and Koornwinder polynomials
This paper develops the theory of Macdonald-Koornwinder polynomials in parallel analogy with the work done for the $GL_n$ case in [CR22]. In the context of the type $CC_n$ affine root system the Macdonald polynomials of other root systems of classical type are specializations of the Koornwinder polynomials. We derive $c$-function formulas for symmetrizers and use them to give $E$-expansions, principal specializations and norm formulas for bosonic, mesonic and fermionic Koornwinder polynomials. Finally, we explain the proof of the norm conjectures and constant term conjectures for the Koornwinder case.
Grothendieck Shenanigans: Permutons from pipe dreams via integrable probability
We study random permutations arising from reduced pipe dreams. Our main model is motivated by Grothendieck polynomials with parameter $β=1$ arising in K-theory of the flag variety. The probability weight of a permutation is proportional to the principal specialization (setting all variables to 1) of the corresponding Grothendieck polynomial. By mapping this random permutation to a version of TASEP (Totally Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Process), we describe the limiting permuton and fluctuations around it as the order $n$ of the permutation grows to infinity. The fluctuations are of order $n^{\frac13}$ and have the Tracy-Widom GUE distribution, which places this algebraic (K-theoretic) model into the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang universality class. We also investigate non-reduced pipe dreams and make progress on a recent open problem on the asymptotic number of inversions of the resulting permutation. Inspired by Stanley's question for the maximal value of principal specializations of Schubert polynomials, we resolve the analogous question for $β=1$ Grothendieck polynomials, and provide bounds for general $β$.

Principal specializations of Schubert polynomials, multi-layered permutations and asymptotics
Let $v(n)$ be the largest principal specialization of Schubert polynomials for layered permutations $v(n) := \max_{w \in \mathcal{L}_n} \mathfrak{S}_w(1,\ldots,1)$. Morales, Pak and Panova proved that there is a limit \[\lim_{n \to \infty} \frac{\log v(n)}{n^2},\] and gave a precise description of layered permutations reaching the maximum. In this paper, we extend Morales Pak and Panova's results to generalized principal specialization $\mathfrak{S}_w(1,q,q^2,\ldots)$ for multi-layered permutations when $q$ equals a root of unity.

c-functions and Macdonald polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
This is a paper about $c$-functions and Macdonald polynomials. There are $c$-function formulas for $E$-expansions of $P_λ$ and $A_{λ+ρ}$, principal specializations of $P_λ$ and $E_μ$, for Macdonald's constant term formulas, and for the norms of Macdonald polynomials. Most of these follow from the creation formulas for Macdonald polynomials, providing alternative proofs to several results from Macdonald (2003). In addition, we prove the Boson-Fermion correspondence in the Macdonald polynomial setting and the Weyl character formula for Macdonald polynomials.

Limit shapes for skew Howe duality
We study large random partitions boxed into a rectangle and coming from skew Howe duality, or alternatively from dual Schur measures. As the sides of the rectangle go to infinity, we obtain: 1) limit shape results for the profiles generalizing the Vershik--Kerov--Logan--Shepp curve; and 2) universal edge asymptotic results for the first parts in the form of the Tracy--Widom distribution, as well as less-universal critical regime results introduced by Gravner, Tracy and Widom. We do this for a large class of Schur parameters going beyond the Plancherel or principal specializations previously studied in the literature, parametrized by two real valued functions $f$ and $g$. Connections to a Bernoulli model of (last passage) percolation are explored.

Pattern bounds for principal specializations of $β$-Grothendieck Polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
There has been recent interest in lower bounds for the principal specializations of Schubert polynomials $ν_w := \mathfrak S_w(1,\dots,1)$. We prove a conjecture of Yibo Gao in the setting of $1243$-avoiding permutations that gives a lower bound for $ν_w$ in terms of the permutation patterns contained in $w$. We extended this result to principal specializations of $β$-Grothendieck polynomials $ν^{(β)}_w := \mathfrak G^{(β)}_w(1,\dots,1)$ by restricting to the class of vexillary $1243$-avoiding permutations. Our methods are bijective, offering a combinatorial interpretation of the coefficients $c_w$ and $c^{(β)}_w$ appearing in these conjectures.

Noncolliding Macdonald Walks with an Absorbing Wall
Published in SIGMA 18 (2022), 079, 21 pages • View PublicationBIB
The branching rule is one of the most fundamental properties of the Macdonald symmetric polynomials. It expresses a Macdonald polynomial as a nonnegative linear combination of Macdonald polynomials with smaller number of variables. Taking a limit of the branching rule under the principal specialization when the number of variables goes to infinity, we obtain a Markov chain of $m$ noncolliding particles with negative drift and an absorbing wall at zero. The chain depends on the Macdonald parameters $(q,t)$ and may be viewed as a discrete deformation of the Dyson Brownian motion. The trajectory of the Markov chain is equivalent to a certain Gibbs ensemble of plane partitions with an arbitrary cascade front wall. In the Jack limit $t=q^{β/2}\to 1$ the absorbing wall disappears, and the Macdonald noncolliding walks turn into the $β$-noncolliding random walks studied by Huang [Int. Math. Res. Not. 2021 (2021), 5898-5942, arXiv:1708.07115]. Taking $q=0$ (Hall-Littlewood degeneration) and further sending $t\to 1$, we obtain a continuous time particle system on $\mathbb{Z}_{\ge 0}$ with inhomogeneous jump rates and absorbing wall at zero.

Principal Specialization of Monomial Symmetric Polynomials and Group Determinants of Cyclic Groups
In this paper, we consider the principal specialization of monomial symmetric polynomials and investigate the special values of these polynomials at the point $$ ζ_{(n,k)} := ( 1, ζ_n, ζ_n^2, \dots, ζ_n^{kn-1} ), $$ where \(ζ_n\) is a primitive \(n\)th root of unity. We give explicit formulas for several special values. Also, we show that these special values naturally appear as the coefficients in the expansion of the $k$th power of the circulant determinant of order $n$ (the group determinant of the cyclic group of order $n$). These results extend Ore's results for $k = 1$. Furthermore, we determine the number of terms in the $k$th power of the group permanent of the cyclic group of order $n$. This extends Brualdi and Newman's result for $k = 1$.

Skew Schur polynomials and cyclic sieving phenomenon
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $k$ and $m$ be positive integers and $λ/μ$ a skew partition. We compute the principal specialization of the skew Schur polynomials $s_{λ/μ}(x_1, \ldots, x_{k})$ modulo $q^m-1$ under suitable conditions. We interpret the results thus obtained from the viewpoint of the cyclic sieving phenomenon on semistandard Young skew tableaux of shape $λ/μ$. As an application, we deal with evaluations of the principal specialization of the skew Schur polynomials at roots of unity.
Principal specialization of dual characters of flagged Weyl modules
Schur polynomials are special cases of Schubert polynomials, which in turn are special cases of dual characters of flagged Weyl modules. The principal specialization of Schur and Schubert polynomials has a long history, with Macdonald famously expressing the principal specialization of any Schubert polynomial in terms of reduced words. We study the principal specialization of dual characters of flagged Weyl~modules. Our result yields an alternative proof of a conjecture of Stanley about the principal specialization of Schubert polynomials, originally proved by Weigandt.

Inclusion-exclusion on Schubert polynomials
We prove that an inclusion-exclusion inspired expression of Schubert polynomials of permutations that avoid the patterns 1432 and 1423 is nonnegative. Our theorem implies a partial affirmative answer to a recent conjecture of Yibo Gao about principal specializations of Schubert polynomials. We propose a general framework for finding inclusion-exclusion inspired expression of Schubert polynomials of all permutations.
