Eulerian insertion operators and an Eulerian form of the Pieri rule
We study the operators obtained by inserting copies of a new largest letter into multiset permutations. Let $G_r$ denote the operator which inserts $r$ copies of a new largest letter. After the change of variables $δ=y-x$, $u=x/y$, and $E=u\partial_u$, we find that $$G_r=\frac{δ^r}{r!}E(E+1)\cdots(E+r-1).$$ Its generating series acts by a rational substitution, which yields the composition law. Our main result gives a common symmetric-function explanation for the ordinary and major-index operators. For $N\geq 0$, define $Φ_N(F_{N,S})=x^{|S|+1}y^{N-|S|}$. We prove that multiplication by the complete homogeneous symmetric function $h_r$ becomes the ordinary insertion operator: $Φ_{N+r}(h_r f)=G_rΦ_N(f)$, where $f\in\mathrm{QSym}_N$. There is a parallel specialization for the major index. A reverse finite principal specialization sends multiplication by $h_r$ to an operator $Q_r$, which is a polynomial in the $q$-shift $Θ_qf(t)=f(qt)$. Thus the ordinary and major-index operators arise from the same multiplication operator $f\mapsto h_r f$. Since the functions $h_r$ freely generate the ring of symmetric functions, the assignment $h_r\mapsto G_r$ extends to an algebra homomorphism. We determine the kernel of this homomorphism and the image of every homogeneous component. The images of Schur functions satisfy the Littlewood--Richardson multiplication identities, and the one-row case gives an Eulerian form of the Pieri rule.
A proof of the $m$-Symmetric Macdonald positivity at $t=1$
We prove, in the case $t=1$, the extension to the $m$-symmetric world of the original Macdonald positivity conjecture. This is achieved by giving a combinatorial interpretation of the Kostka coefficients $K_{ΩΛ}(q,1)$ in terms of standard fillings of the diagram associated to the $m$-partition $Ω$. This interpretation generalizes the one in the usual Macdonald case, which is given by a major index statistic on standard tableaux.
A bijection on balanced words reversing both $\text{des}$ and $\text{maj}$
Balanced words on a finite alphabet are those words in which every letter of the alphabet occurs the same number of times. The notion of descents and major index extends in a natural way to words. It is known that the bivariate generating polynomials for descents and major index over balanced words on the alphabet $[k]$ with $n$ occurrences each is palindromic, but a bijective proof has been missing even for balanced binary words. We give an explicit bijection proving this result. For permutations (which are also balanced), our bijection is different from the complementation map. We also show that for balanced binary words, this bijection simultaneously flips the ascent and comajor index as well.
Thrall's problem for two rows
In this paper, we study Thrall's problem for the higher Lie modules $L_λ$. Our main result provides a tableau-theoretic description of the Schur expansion of the character of $L_λ$ when $λ$ has two rows, thereby solving Thrall's problem in this case. This formula is expressed in terms of standard Young tableaux with major index congruence conditions and a spin-parity condition defined through bijections with Yamanouchi domino tableaux. We also obtain tableau formulas for hook shapes and partitions with distinct parts, and these results extend to all partitions in which each part greater than $2$ occurs at most twice.
Super Major Index Cyclic Sieving
Recently, Armon and Swanson introduced signed standard tableaux and a corresponding super major index that refines the classical major index. In this paper, we prove that signed standard tableaux of rectangular shape exhibit a cyclic sieving phenomenon (CSP) under the combined action of Schützenberger promotion and cyclic shift of the signs, with the sieving polynomial given by the super major index generating function. This extends Rhoades's celebrated CSP for standard Young tableaux. Furthermore, by considering Cartesian products of tableaux, we generalize this result to arbitrary non-rectangular shapes.
Combinatorial formulas for symmetric Macdonald polynomials by superizations
In this paper, we derive new combinatorial formulas for symmetric Macdonald polynomials $P_λ(X;q,t)$ and integral Macdonald polynomials $J_λ(X;q,t)$, in terms of several new statistics and the major index for a partition $λ$. Moreover, three existing formulas for symmetric Macdonald polynomials established by Corteel--Mandelshtam--Williams (2022), Corteel--Haglund--Mandelshtam--Mason--Williams (2022) and Mandelshtam (2025) are recovered. Our proof relies on a new statistic on super fillings, employing the superization formula of Ayyer--Mandelshtam--Martin (2023) and our recent approach to modified Macdonald polynomials.
Further refinements of Euler-Mahonian statistics for multipermutations
Permutation statistics constitute a classical subject of enumerative combinatorics. In her study of the genus zeta function, Denert discovered a new Mahonian statistic for permutations, which is called the Denert's statistic ({\bf $\den$}) by Foata and Zeilberger. As natural extensions of the $r$-descent number ({\bf $r\des$}) and the $r$-major index ({\bf $r\maj$}) introduced by Rawlings, Liu introduced the $g$-gap $\ell$-level descent number ({\bf $g\des_{\ell}$}) and the $g$-gap $\ell$-level major index ({\bf $g\maj_{\ell}$}) for permutations. In this paper, we introduce the $g$-gap $\ell$-level Denert's statistic ({\bf $g\den_{\ell}$}) and the $g$-gap $\ell$-level excedance number ({\bf $g\exc_{\ell}$}) for multipermutations, which serve as natural generalizations of the Denert's statistic ({\bf $\den$}) and the excedance number ({\bf $\exc$}) for multipermutations first introduced by Han. By constructing two explicit bijections, we establish the equidistribution of the pairs $(g\exc_{\ell}, g\den_{h} )$ and $(g\des_{\ell}, g\maj_{\ell})$ over multipermutations for all $1\leq h\leq g+\ell$. Our result provides a new proof of the equidistribution of the pairs ($\des$, $\maj$) and ($\exc$, $\den$) over multipermutations originally derived by Han and enables us to confirm a recent conjecture posed by Huang-Lin-Yan. Furthermore, we demonstrate that for all $1\leq h\leq g+\ell$, the pair $(g\exc_\ell, g\den_{h})$ is $r$-Euler-Mahonian over multipermutations of $M=\{1^k, 2^k, \ldots, n^k\}$ where $r=g+\ell-1$ and $k\geq 1$, which extends a recent novel result derived by Liu from permutations to multipermutations.
Crystal skeleton polynomials with major index, charge and depth
We introduce a new family of polynomials, crystal skeleton polynomials, to better understand enumeration of standard Young tableaux, quasi-Yamanouchi tableaux and interactions with Gessel's expansion of a Schur function, quasi-crystals and crystal skeletons as Maas-Gariépy introduced in 2023. After developing calculus of those polynomials, we organize thoughts on major index, charge, depth, inversions with RSK correspondence and a bivariate factorial. Also, we revisit the theorem on internal zeros of fake degree polynomials by Billey--Konvalinka--Swanson (2020). These results altogether improve Gessel's expansion.
Signed Mahonian Polynomials on Colored Derangements
The polynomial $\sum_{π\in W}q^{maj(π)}$ of major index over a classical Weyl group $W$ with a generating set $S$ is called the Mahonian polynomial over $W$, and also the polynomial $\sum_{π\in W}(-1)^{l(π)}q^{maj(π)}$ of major index together with sign over the group $W$ is called the signed Mahonian polynomial over the group $W$, where $l$ is the length function on $W$ defined in terms of the generating set $S$. We concern with the signed Mahonian polynomial $$\sum_{π\in D_{n}^{(c)}}(-1)^{L(π)}q^{fmaj(π)}$$ on the set $D_{n}^{(c)}$ of colored derangements in the group $G_{c,n}$ of colored permutations, where $L$ denotes the length function defined by means of a complex root system described by Bremke and Malle in $G_{c,n}$ and $fmaj$ defined by Adin and Roichman in $G_{c,n}$ represents the \textit{flag-major index}, which is a Mahonian statistic. As an application of the formula for signed Mahonian polynomials on the set of colored derangements, we will derive a formula to count colored derangements of even length in $G_{c,n}$ when $c$ is an even number. Finally, we conclude by providing a formula for the difference between the number of derangements of even and odd lengths in $G_{c,n}$ for every positive integer $c$, regardless of whether c is odd or even.
Inverse descent statistic for André and simsun permutations
Simsun permutations, André I permutations and André II permutations are three combinatorial models for Euler numbers. It's known that the descent statistic is equidistributed over the set of André I permutations and the set of simsun permutations. In this paper, we prove that the trivariate statistic (ides, des, maj), comprising the inverse descent, descent, and major index, are equidistributed over these three sets. This result is equivalent to showing that the inverse descent is equidistributed over these three sets that share the same tree shape. The proof of the equidistribution of the inverse descent over the set of André I permutations and the set of André II permutations with the same tree shape reduces to establishing new refinements of Stanley's shuffle theorem.
Orbit lengths for promotion on 2-row and near-hook tableaux
Promotion has been well-studied for rectangular standard Young tableaux, in which case the orbit lengths divide the total number of boxes and are described by a cyclic sieving phenomenon (CSP), but little is known about the orbit lengths for tableaux of general shape. We approach this problem by building a stable sequence of tableaux where we fix the bottom portion and add extra boxes to the first row to get $n$ total boxes, with $n$ varying. We show that for 2-row tableaux with a fixed bottom row, the orbit lengths are divisors of certain monic polynomials in $n$, with degree generally equal to the number of distinct lengths of runs of consecutive numbers in the bottom row. For the subsets of 2-row tableaux where all runs have the same length, we show that the orbit lengths are characterized by a CSP polynomial that is a slightly modified version of the major index generating function, like in the rectangle case. We also show that for any stable sequence of tableaux, the orbit lengths are linear in $n$ as long as all non-first-row entries differ from each other by at least 2, which asymptotically happens for almost all tableaux in the limit as $n\to\infty.$ We also calculate the orbit lengths for near-hook tableaux, which are divisors of certain linear or quadratic polynomials in $n$.
A bi-Stirling-Euler-Mahonian polynomial
Motivated by recent work on (re)mixed Eulerian numbers, we provide a combinatorial interpretation of a subfamily of the remixed Eulerian numbers introduced by Nadeau and Tewari. More specifically, we show that these numbers can be realized as the generating polynomials of permutations with respect to the statistics of left-to-right minima, right-to-left minima, descents, and the mixed major index. Our results generalize both the bi-Stirling-Eulerian polynomials of Carlitz-Scoville and the Stirling-Euler-Mahonian polynomials of Butler.
Descent sets of cyclic permutations in types B and D
Elizalde constructed a bijection $φ$ from the cyclic permutations $π\in S_{n+1}$ to the symmetric group $S_n$ satisfying $\operatorname{Des}(π)\cap \{1,2,\ldots,n-1\}=\operatorname{Des}(φ(π))$. We give a corresponding result on the signed symmetric group $B_n$ by constructing a function $Φ$ from the cyclic signed permutations $π\in B_{n+1}$ to $B_n$ satisfying $\operatorname{Des}(π)\cap \{0,1,\ldots,n-1\}=\operatorname{Des}(Φ(π))$. Moreover, letting $D_{n+1}\subseteq B_{n+1}$ be the subgroup consisting of signed permutations with an even number of sign changes, we show that the restriction of $Φ$ to the cyclic signed permutations in $D_{n+1}$ or its complement is a bijection. Our function $Φ$ reduces to Elizalde's original bijection $φ$ under the natural identification of the symmetric groups as subgroups of the signed symmetric groups. One application of our results is asymptotic normality of the descent and flag major index statistics on the cyclic signed permutations in $B_{n}$ and $D_n$.
Statistics on $\ell$-interval parking functions
The displacement of a car with respect to a parking function is the number of spots it must drive past its preferred spot in order to park. An $\ell$-interval parking function is one in which each car has displacement at most $\ell$. Among our results, we enumerate $\ell$-interval parking functions with respect to statistics such as inversion, displacement, and major index. We show that $1$-interval parking functions with fixed displacement exhibit a cyclic sieving phenomenon. We give closed formulas for the number of $1$-interval parking functions with a fixed number of inversions. We prove that a well-known bijection of Foata preserves the set of $\ell$-interval parking functions exactly when $\ell\leq 2$ or $\ell\geq n-2$, which implies that the inversion and major index statistics are equidistributed in these cases.
Descents and flag major index on conjugacy classes of colored permutation groups without short cycles
We consider the descent and flag major index statistics on the colored permutation groups, which are wreath products of the form $\mathfrak{S}_{n,r}=\mathbb{Z}_r\wr \mathfrak{S}_n$. We show that the $k$-th moments of these statistics on $\mathfrak{S}_{n,r}$ will coincide with the corresponding moments on all conjugacy classes without cycles of lengths $1,2,\ldots,2k$. Using this, we establish the asymptotic normality of the descent and flag major index statistics on conjugacy classes of $\mathfrak{S}_{n,r}$ with sufficiently long cycles. Our results generalize prior work of Fulman involving the descent and major index statistics on the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$. Our methods involve an intricate extension of Fulman's work on $\mathfrak{S}_n$ combined with the theory of the degree for a colored permutation statistic, as introduced by Campion Loth, Levet, Liu, Sundaram, and Yin.
The major index (maj) and its Schützenberger dual
We construct the independent particle representation for the Semistandard Young Tableaux (SsYT) of skew shape $λ/μ.$ The partition function of this particle system gives the generating function of the SsYT of skew shape $λ/μ.$ Thus we obtain a bijective proof of the Stanley formula for the SsYT generating function.
To do this we define for every SsYT $T$ its plinth, $\mathsf{p}\left( T\right) ,$ which is a SsYT of the same shape $λ/μ.$ The set of plinths is finite. Our bijection associates to every SsYT $T$ a pair $\left( \mathsf{p}\left( T\right) ,Y\left( T-\mathsf{p}\left( T\right) \right) \right) ,$ where $Y\left( T-\mathsf{p}\left( T\right) \right) $ is the reading Young diagram of the SsYT $\left( T-\mathsf{p}\left( T\right) \right) $. \newline In particular, every Standard Young Tableau (SYT) $P$ has its plinth, $\mathsf{p}\left( P\right) $. The two statistics of SYT-s -- the volume $\left\vert \mathsf{p}\left( P\right) \right\vert $ and $\mathsf{maj}\left( P\right) $ -- are related via the Schützenberger involution $Sch:$% \[ \left\vert \mathsf{p}\left( P\right) \right\vert =\mathsf{maj}\left( Sch\left( P\right) \right) . \]
Further results on $r$-Euler-Mahonian statistics
As natural generalizations of the descent number ($\des$) and the major index ($\maj$), Rawlings introduced the notions of the $r$-descent number ($r\des$) and the $r$-major index ($r\maj$) for a given positive integer $r$. A pair $(\st_1, \st_2)$ of permutation statistics is said to be $r$-Euler-Mahonian if $ (\mathrm{st_1}, \mathrm{st_2})$ and
$ (r\des, r\maj)$ are equidistributed over the set $\mathfrak{S}_{n}$ of all permutations of $\{1,2,\ldots, n\}$. The main objective of this paper is to confirm a recent conjecture posed by Liu which asserts that $(g\exc_\ell, g\den_\ell)$ is $(g+\ell-1)$-Euler-Mahonian for all positive integers $g$ and $\ell$, where $g\exc_\ell$ denotes the $g$-gap $\ell$-level excedance number and $g\den_\ell$ denotes the $g$-gap $\ell$-level Denert's statistic. This is accomplished via a bijective proof of the equidistribution of $(g\exc_\ell, g\den_\ell)$ and $ (r\des, r\maj)$ where $r=g+\ell-1$.
Setting $g=\ell=1$, our result recovers the equidistribution of $(\des, \maj)$ and $(\exc, \den)$, which was first conjectured by Denert and proved by Foata and Zeilberger. Our second main result is concerned with the analogous result for $(g\exc_\ell, g\den_{g+\ell})$ which states that $(g\exc_\ell, g\den_{g+\ell})$ is $(g+\ell-1)$-Euler-Mahonian for all positive integers $g$ and $\ell$.
Major Index Distribution
For $0<q<1$, let $Maj$ be the distribution on the symmetric group $S_n$ such that a permutation $π\in S_n$ is selected with probability proportional to $q^{maj(π)}$. The distribution has connections to $q$-Plancherel measure. We describe an algorithm that realizes $Maj$, and use it to prove known results of $q$-Plancherel measure without the need of representation theory. This sampler is transparent and elegant, allowing properties of $Maj$ about its limit shape, pattern normality, and cycle structure to be obtained.
On Minimal Polynomials of Elements in Symmetric and Alternating Groups
Let $ (ρ, V) $ be an irreducible representation of the symmetric group $ S_n$ (or the alternating group $ A_n$), and let $ g $ be a permutation on $n$ letters with each of its cycle lengths divides the length of its largest cycle. We describe completely the minimal polynomial of $ρ(g)$, showing that, in most cases, it equals $x^{o(g)} - 1 $, with a few explicit exceptions. As a by-product, we obtain a new proof (using only combinatorics and representation theory) of a theorem of Swanson that gives a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a standard Young tableau of a given shape and major index $r \ \text{mod} \ n$, for all $r$. Thereby, we give a new proof of a celebrated result of Klyachko on Lie elements in a tensor algebra, and of a conjecture of Sundaram on the existence of an invariant vector for $n$-cycles. We also show that for elements $g$ in $S_n$ or $A_n$ of even order, in most cases, $ρ(g)$ has eigenvalue $-1$, with a few explicit exceptions.
Super major index and Thrall's problem
Thrall's problem asks for the Schur decomposition of the higher Lie modules $\mathcal{L}_λ$, which are defined using the free Lie algebra and decompose the tensor algebra as a general linear group module. Although special cases have been solved, Thrall's problem remains open in general. We generalize Thrall's problem to the free Lie superalgebra, and prove extensions of three known results in this setting: Brandt's formula, Klyachko's identification of the Schur--Weyl dual of $\mathcal{L}_n$, and Kr{á}skiewicz--Weyman's formula for the Schur decomposition of $\mathcal{L}_n$. The latter involves a new version of the major index on super tableaux, which we show corresponds to a $q,t$-hook formula of Macdonald.
