On Conjugacy Classes of Derangements in Symmetric and Alternating Groups
In this article, we prove two conjectures of Burness and Fusari [Timothy Burness and Marco Fusari, On derangements in simple permutation groups, Forum Math. Sigma 13 (2025)] concerning the powers and products of conjugacy classes of derangements in the symmetric and alternating groups: (1) We show that there exist two conjugacy classes $C$ and $D$ of derangements in $S_n$ such that $S_n=C^2\cup CD$, and (2) We show that there exists a conjugacy class $C$ of derangements in $A_n$ such that $C^2=A_n$, whenever $n\equiv 3\;(\text{mod}\;4)$. In fact, our result concerning the second conjecture holds in a considerably more general setting, which also answers affirmatively a question posed by Bertram [Edward Bertram, Even permutations as a product of two conjugate cycles, J. Comb. Theory, Ser. A 12 (1972), 368-380] in a particular case. Moreover, we show that any conjugacy class $C$ of derangements in $S_n$ (resp. $A_n$) contains a pair of elements that generate $S_n$ or $A_n$ (resp. $A_n$), unless $C$ is the conjugacy class of fixed-point-free involutions.
Characterisations of finite groups with exponent $q$ via their power graphs
The power graph $P(G)$ of a finite group $G$ is the graph with vertex set $G$ and edge set $E(P(G))=\{uv:\ u,v \in G,\ u \neq v,\ u \in \langle v \rangle \ \text{or}\ v \in \langle u \rangle\},$ where $\langle x\rangle$ denotes the cyclic subgroup generated by $x$. In this paper, we characterise all the finite groups with exponent $q$ whose power graphs are friendship graphs, firefly-type graphs, or torch graphs. We prove that the power graph of a finite group $G$ with exponent $q$ is a friendship graph if and only if $q=3$. In particular, in the abelian case, this is equivalent to $G\cong\mathbb{Z}_3^{n}$. We further show that, among all the symmetric and alternating groups, only $S_3$ and $A_4$ have firefly-type power graphs, whereas no finite group has a power graph isomorphic to a torch graph. Finally, we determine the generalised distance spectra $D_α$-spectra of these graph classes.

The basic tropical polynomials generate the semifield of $r$-symmetric tropical rational functions
Let the symmetric group $S_n$ act on the space of $n \times r$ real matrices by permuting rows, so orbits are multisets of $n$ points in $\mathbb{R}^r$. The basic $r$-symmetric tropical polynomials form a family of $\binom{n+r}{r}-1$ nonconstant invariants of degree at most $n$ that separates orbits and embeds the orbit space bi-Lipschitzly. We prove that this family generates the semifield of all $r$-symmetric tropical rational functions, answering a question raised in [J. Pure Appl. Algebra 223 (2019) 72-85]. Derksen showed that the invariant semifield of any permutation group $G \le S_N$ is generated in degree at most $N p_1 \cdots p_{|G|}$ ($p_i$ the $i$th prime), which for the row action is $nr p_1 \cdots p_{n!}$; the present result replaces this by generators of degree at most $n$. The generating expression is a finite minimum over the ways of re-assembling a multiset from its sorted columns, with penalties from the basic values that, via the bi-Lipschitz inequality, dominate a wrong re-assembly. The same penalties describe the image of the basic coordinate map as the zero set of a single tropical rational function and yield an expression algorithm. Subfamilies of the basic family containing the single-column values generate if and only if they separate. For any permutation group $G \le S_N$ the same mechanism generates the invariant semifield in degree at most $\max\{N, \binom{N}{2}\}$, a quadratic bound independent of the group order; combined with a genericity theorem of Cahill, Iverson, Mixon, and Packer, it yields $2N+1$ invariant tropical polynomials that separate orbits and $3N$ that generate, with at least $N$ necessary for each task. The quadratic bound is optimal: every $A_N$-invariant tropical polynomial of degree less than $\binom{N}{2}$ is $S_N$-invariant, so every separating family for the alternating group $A_N$ contains a member of degree at least $\binom{N}{2}$.
Circular sorting in the alternating group
The symmetric group $S_n$ is generated by transpositions, and problems of sorting permutations using transpositions are well studied. In recent work, Adin, Alon, and Roichman studied the related problem of sorting $n$ points on a circle, and gave a formula for the maximum number of adjacent swaps required. This is equivalent to the number of adjacent transpositions required to transform any permutation into a power of the cyclic permutation $(1,2,\ldots, n)$. The focus of this work is an analogous question in the alternating group $A_n$, which is generated by $3$-cycles. That is, using 3-cycles instead of transpositions, what is the maximum number of steps required to transform an even permutation into a power of $(1,2,\ldots, n)$ in the alternating group? We determine this number exactly for even $n$ and $n \equiv 1 \pmod{4}$. For $n \equiv 3 \pmod{4}$, we show that the sorting number can take one of two possible values and give explicit constructions demonstrating that the larger value occurs infinitely often.

Geometries admitting trialities for the symmetric and alternating groups
In incidence geometry, a triality is a symmetry cyclically exchanging triples of types of elements. Requiring geometries with trialities to satisfy standard regularity conditions makes their construction highly non trivial, and known examples are rare. In this paper, we present two infinite families of flag transitive, thin and residually connected geometries admitting trialities and no dualities with type preserving automorphism groups isomorphic to Sym(n) or Alt(n). We also develop general methods that extend to other settings. The residues of the two families are fundamentally different. In the first family, the maximal parabolics have constant size while in the other their size grows essentially linearly with the degree of the group.

Representing alternating groups as self-dual string C-groups of high rank
The highest rank of a string C-group representation of the alternating group $A_n$ is known for each $n$, but no self-dual representations attaining this highest rank are known when $n > 12$. Motivated by computational results for alternating groups of small degree, we examine a vertex-gluing construction for permutation representation graphs. We establish conditions under which gluing two string C-groups produces another string C-group, and use this construction to obtain infinite families of self-dual representations of alternating groups. In particular, for every $n = 4m+3 \geq 15$, we construct $\left \lfloor \frac{n+9}{8} \right \rfloor$ distinct self-dual string C-groups of rank $2m$ isomorphic to $A_{n}$. These representations have rank one below the maximum possible rank of string C-group representations for $A_n$, and to the authors' knowledge are the highest-rank self-dual representations currently known for alternating groups.
The distinguishing number of complete bipartite and crown graphs
The distinguishing number of a permutation group $G\leqslant\Sym(Ω)$ is the minimum number of colours needed to colour $Ω$ in such a way that the only colour preserving element of $G$ is the identity. The distinguishing number of a graph is the distinguishing number of its automorphism group (as a permutation group on vertices). We determine the distinguishing number of the complete bipartite graphs $K_{n,n}$ and the crown graphs $K_{n,n}-nK_2$, as well as the distinguishing number of some `large' subgroups of their automorphism groups, that is, the subgroups that are vertex- and edge-transitive and such that the induced action on each bipart is $\Alt(n)$ or $\Sym(n)$. We show that, if $G$ is a `large' group of automorphisms of $K_{n,n}$, then $n-1\leqslant D(G) \leqslant n+1$. Similarly, if $G$ is a `large' group of automorphisms of a crown graph, then $\lceil \sqrt{n-1}\rceil \leqslant D(G)\leqslant \lfloor \sqrt{n}\rfloor+1$. \smallskip \textit{Keywords:} complete bipartite graph; crown graph; distinguishing number; symmetric group; alternating group

Quasiprimitive and bi-quasiprimitive highly-arc-transitive digraphs and finite simple groups
We extend the notion of an $H$-normal quotient digraph of an $H$-vertex-transitive digraph to that of an $H$-subnormal quotient digraph. Using these concepts, together with bipartite halves of bipartite digraphs, we show that, for each finite connected $H$-vertex-transitive, $(H,s)$-arc-transitive digraph with $s\geqslant6$, either some $H$-normal quotient is a directed cycle of length at least $3$, or there is an $(L,t)$-arc-transitive digraph with $t\geqslant (s-3)/2$, and $L$ a vertex-quasiprimitive almost simple group with socle a composition factor of $H$. This connection demonstrates that, to understand finite $s$-arc-transitive digraphs with large $s$, those admitting a vertex-quasiprimitive almost simple $s$-arc-transitive subgroup of automorphisms play a central role. We show that for each $s$ and each odd valency $k$, there are infinitely many $(H,s)$-arc-transitive digraphs of valency $k$ with $H$ a finite alternating group. In addition we discovered a novel construction which takes as input a connected non-bipartite $H$-vertex-transitive, $(H,s)$-arc-transitive digraph, and outputs a connected bipartite $G$-vertex-transitive, $(G,2s)$-arc-transitive digraph with $G=(H\times H).2$. This leads to construction of vertex-bi-quasiprimitive $s$-arc-transitive digraphs, for arbitrarily large $s$. Our investigations yield several new open problems.

On the Positivity of Dihedral Branching Coefficients of the Symmetric and Alternating Groups
We determine precisely when the branching coefficients arising from the restriction of irreducible representations of the symmetric group $S_n$ to the dihedral subgroup $D_n$ are nonzero, and we establish uniform linear lower bounds outside a finite exceptional family. As a consequence, we recover and substantially generalize known positivity results for cyclic subgroups $C_n \leq S_n$. Analogous results are obtained for the alternating group $A_n$.
On the deep commuting graph of a finite group
Let $G$ be a finite group and let $\tilde{G}$ be a Schur cover of $G$. The deep commuting graph $Δ_D(G)$ of $G$ is a simple graph with vertex set $G$, where two distinct vertices are adjacent if their pre-images commute in $\tilde{G}$. The deep commuting graph of a finite group was first introduced in [P. J. Cameron and B. Kuzma, Between the enhanced power graph and the commuting graph, {\it J. Graph Theory} {\bf 102} (2023), no. 2, 295--303], where the authors have shown that $Δ_D(G)$ is fixed irrespective of the choice of the Schur cover $\tilde{G}$. In this paper, we first prove that $Δ_D(G)$ is complete if and only if $G$ is cyclic. Also, we classify finite simple groups, symmetric groups and alternating groups, for which $Δ_D(G)$ is perfect. In addition, explore several other properties of $Δ_D(G)$ like Eulerianess, universality and connectedness of reduced deep commuting graphs. Next, we classify the finite abelian groups for which deep commuting graphs coincide with enhance power graphs. We also characterize the dominant vertices for the deep commuting graphs of finite abelian groups and examine the connectedness of the associated reduced deep commuting graphs. These properties of the deep commuting graphs for the non abelian groups like symmetric groups, alternating groups, dihedral groups, generalized quaternion group and Heisenberg groups are also discussed.

Galois Automorphisms And Littlewood Decompositions
The study of modular representation theory of the double covering groups of the symmetric and alternating groups reveals rich and subtle combinatorial and algebraic phenomena involving their irreducible characters and the structure of their p-blocks, where p is an odd prime number. In this paper, we investigate the action of certain Galois automorphisms, those that act on p'-roots of unity by a power of p, on spin characters, with an emphasis on their interaction with perfect isometries and block theory. In particular, we prove that perfect isometries constructed by the first author and J.\,B. Gramain in \cite{BrGr3}, which were used to establish a weaker form of the Kessar--Schaps conjecture, remain preserved under this Galois action whenever certain natural compatibility conditions occur.

Subgroup perfect codes of $S_n$ in Cayley sum graphs
A perfect code in a graph $Γ= (V, E)$ is a subset $C$ of $V$ such that no two vertices in $C$ are adjacent, and every vertex in $V \setminus C$ is adjacent to exactly one vertex in $C$. Let $ G $ be a finite group, and let $ S $ be a square-free normal subset of $ G $. The Cayley sum graph of $ G $ with respect to $ S $ is a simple graph with vertex set $ G $ and two vertices $ x $ and $ y $ are adjacent if $ xy\in S .$ A subset $ C $ of $ G $ is called perfect code of $ G $ if there exists a Cayley sum graph of $ G $ that admits $ C $ as a perfect code. In particular, if a subgroup of $ G $ is a perfect code of $ G $, then the subgroup is called a subgroup perfect code of $ G $. In this work, we prove that there does not exist any proper perfect subgroup code of symmetric group $ S_n $. Using this result, we provide a complete characterization of the perfect subgroup code of the alternating group $A_n$.

Classification of flag-transitive $2$-$(v, k, λ)$ designs with alternating group $A_n$($n \le 10$) as socle
This paper is devoted to the classification of all flag-transitive point-primitive non-trivial $2$-$(v, k, λ)$ designs with the alternating group $A_n$($n \le 10$) as the socle of their automorphism groups, and 87 different designs are obtained up to isomorphism. The results of this study further improve the classification theory of designs under the action of almost simple groups, and provide reference for the follow-up study of similar problems.

The symmetric groups $S_n, n\geq 4$, and finite non-abelian simple groups are not embeddable in any Riordan group
We prove that the symmetric group of degree greater than three cannot be embedded into the Riordan group with coefficients in any commutative ring. We also prove the impossibility to embed finite non-abelian simple groups. As a closely related topic, we show why all truncated Riordan groups are solvable, in stark contrast to the unsolvability of the infinite-sized Riordan groups. Finally, we give an explicit embedding of the alternating group $A_4$ into the Lagrange subgroup with coefficients in a certain commutative ring, and prove that $A_4$ cannot be embedded into a substitution group, and hence, a Nottingham group.

Derangements in finite classical groups and characteristic polynomials of random matrices
We first obtain explicit upper bounds for the proportion of elements in a finite classical group G with a given characteristic polynomial. We use this to complete the proof that the proportion of elements of a finite classical group G which lie in a proper irreducible subgroup tends to 0 as the dimension of the natural module goes to infinity. This result is analogous to the result of Luczak and Pyber [15] that the proportion of elements of the symmetric group S_n which are contained in a proper transitive subgroup other than the alternating group goes to 0 as n goes to infinity. We also show that the probability that 3 random elements of SL(n,q) invariably generate goes to 0 as n goes to infinity.

Gauged permutation invariant tensor quantum mechanics, least common multiples and the inclusion-exclusion principle
We derive the canonical ensemble partition functions for gauged permutation invariant tensor quantum harmonic oscillator thermodynamics, finding surprisingly simple expressions with number-theoretic characteristics. These systems have a gauged symmetry of $S_N$, the symmetric group of all permutations of a set of $N$ objects. The symmetric group acts on tensor variables $ Φ_{ i_1, \cdots , i_s } $, where the $s$ indices each range over $ \{ 1, 2, \cdots , N \} $ and have the standard $S_N$ action of permutations. The result is a sum over partitions of $N$ and the summand is a product admitting simple expressions, which depend on the least common multiples (LCMs) of subsets of the parts of the partition. The inclusion-exclusion principle of combinatorics plays a central role in the derivation of these expressions. The behaviour of these partition functions under inversion of the Boltzmann factor $ x = e^{ - β} $ is governed by universal sequences associated with invariants of symmetric groups and alternating groups. The partition functions allow the development of a high temperature expansion analogous to the $s=2$ matrix case. The calculation of an $s$-dependent breakdown point leads to a critical Boltzmann factor $ x_c = { \log N \over sN^{ s-1}}$ as the leading large $N$ approximation.

Maximal transitivity of the cactus group on standard Young tableaux
The action of the cactus group $C_n$ on Young tableaux of a given shape $λ$ goes back to Berenstein and Kirillov and arises naturally in the study of crystal bases and quantum integrable systems. We show that this action is $2$-transitive on standard Young tableaux of the shape $λ$ if and only if $λ$ is not self-transpose and not a single hook. Moreover, we show that in these cases, the image of the cactus group in the permutation group of standard Young tableaux is either the whole permutation group or the alternating group, and prove that both cases are possible for infinitely many $λ$ (though the alternating group is more frequent). As an application, this implies that the Galois group of solutions to the Bethe ansatz in the Gaudin model attached to the Lie group $GL_d$ is, in many cases, at least the alternating group. This also extends the results of Sottile and White on the multiple transitivity of the Galois group of Schubert calculus problems in Grassmannians to many new cases.

On the full automorphism groups of $2$-designs constructed from finite fields ${\mathbb F}_{2^n}$
In this manuscript, for $q:=2^n$ with $n\geq2$, we study two primitive maximal subgroups of the alternating group ${\sf A}_{q-1}$. These subgroups are the full automorphism groups of $2$-designs which are constructed from algebraic curves over the finite field ${\mathbb F}_q$.
The maximal rank of a string group generated by involutions for alternating groups
A string group generated by involutions, or SGGI, is a pair $Γ=(G, S)$, where $G$ is a group and $S=\{ρ_0,\ldots, ρ_{r-1}\}$ is an ordered set of involutions generating $G$ and satisfying the commuting property: $$\forall i,j\in\{0,\ldots, r-1\}, \;|i-j|\ne 1\Rightarrow (ρ_iρ_j)^2=1.$$ When $S$ is an independent set, the rank of $Γ$ is the cardinality of $S$. We determine an upper bound for the rank of an SGGI over the alternating group of degree $n$. Our bound is tight when $n\equiv 0,1,4\pmod 5$.
