The basic tropical polynomials generate the semifield of $r$-symmetric tropical rational functions
Let the symmetric group $S_n$ act on the space of $n \times r$ real matrices by permuting rows, so orbits are multisets of $n$ points in $\mathbb{R}^r$. The basic $r$-symmetric tropical polynomials form a family of $\binom{n+r}{r}-1$ nonconstant invariants of degree at most $n$ that separates orbits and embeds the orbit space bi-Lipschitzly. We prove that this family generates the semifield of all $r$-symmetric tropical rational functions, answering a question raised in [J. Pure Appl. Algebra 223 (2019) 72-85]. Derksen showed that the invariant semifield of any permutation group $G \le S_N$ is generated in degree at most $N p_1 \cdots p_{|G|}$ ($p_i$ the $i$th prime), which for the row action is $nr p_1 \cdots p_{n!}$; the present result replaces this by generators of degree at most $n$. The generating expression is a finite minimum over the ways of re-assembling a multiset from its sorted columns, with penalties from the basic values that, via the bi-Lipschitz inequality, dominate a wrong re-assembly. The same penalties describe the image of the basic coordinate map as the zero set of a single tropical rational function and yield an expression algorithm. Subfamilies of the basic family containing the single-column values generate if and only if they separate. For any permutation group $G \le S_N$ the same mechanism generates the invariant semifield in degree at most $\max\{N, \binom{N}{2}\}$, a quadratic bound independent of the group order; combined with a genericity theorem of Cahill, Iverson, Mixon, and Packer, it yields $2N+1$ invariant tropical polynomials that separate orbits and $3N$ that generate, with at least $N$ necessary for each task. The quadratic bound is optimal: every $A_N$-invariant tropical polynomial of degree less than $\binom{N}{2}$ is $S_N$-invariant, so every separating family for the alternating group $A_N$ contains a member of degree at least $\binom{N}{2}$.

Stable complete coordinates for multisets of points via basic $r$-symmetric tropical polynomials
A multiset of $n$ unordered points in $\mathbb{R}^r$ -- a point cloud, or, for $r=2$, a persistence barcode of birth-death pairs -- is a point of the orbit space $\mathbb{R}^{nr}/S_n$ for the symmetric group $S_n$ permuting the rows of an $n \times r$ matrix; a separating family of invariants on this space is exactly a complete set of permutation-independent coordinates. We provide one that is explicit, small, and stable, in the max-plus (tropical) setting: for all $n \geq 1$ and $r \geq 1$, the $\binom{n+r}{r}$ basic $r$-symmetric tropical polynomials, of degree at most $n$, separate the orbits of $S_n$ on $\mathbb{R}^{nr}$. This settles in full a problem left open in [Kubo, J. Pure Appl. Algebra 223 (2019) 72-85], where separation was known only for $r=2$ and special cases of $r \geq 3$, and yields a family far smaller and of lower degree than the general separating sets from Derksen's recent theory of tropical invariants for permutation actions ($nr + (nr)!/n!$ invariants of degree $O(n^2 r^2)$). The proof is elementary and constructive: the basic values are identified with a transportation problem, and the multiset is recovered from the dual by an explicit algorithm. We further show the coordinate map is a bi-Lipschitz embedding for all $n$ and $r$, being an injective max filter bank (via the bi-Lipschitz theory of max filtering), with an explicit Lipschitz constant for the forward bound and a fully explicit, dimension-free distortion when $r=1$. Finally we determine when the pairwise values suffice (exactly $n \leq 3$) and show that invariants on at least three columns and of degree less than $n$ are necessary in general, the obstruction being a standard non-uniqueness configuration from discrete tomography.

Independence of homogeneous GKM manifolds and symmetric spaces
Let $G/H$ be a simply connected homogeneous space of maximal rank. Then the maximal torus $T$-action on $G/H$ is a GKM manifold. We call the $T$-action $j$-independent if any $i(\leq j)$ pairwise distinct isotropy weights at a fixed point are linearly independent. Using weighted graphs, we show that the maximal independence of $G/H$ is $2$, $3$ or $n=\dim T$, and that the cases of $3$ or $n=\dim T$ correspond to some symmetric spaces of rank $>2$. As a corollary, using the results of Ayzenberg and Masuda, the lower-degree reduced homology groups (with appropriate coefficients) of the orbit space $T\backslash G/H$ vanish.

Tropical Invariants for Permutation Group Actions
We consider the action of a permutation group $G$ of order $k$ on the tropical polynomial semiring in $n$ variables. We prove that the sub-semiring of invariant polynomials is finitely generated if and only if $G$ is generated by $2$-cycles. There do exist finitely many separating invariants of degree at most $\max\{n,{n\choose 2}\}$. Separating tropical invariants can be used to construct bi-Lipschitz embeddings of the orbit space ${\mathbb R}^n/G$ into Euclidean space. We also show that the invariant polynomials of degree $\leq n p_1p_2\cdots p_k$ generate the semifield of invariant rational tropical functions, where $p_1,p_2,\dots,p_k$ are the first $k$ prime numbers. Most results are also true over arbitrary semirings that are additively idempotent and multiplicatively cancellative.

Dimension statistics of representations of finite groups
This paper discusses what the dimension data of irreducible representations of a finite group looks like in some specific cases, including unipotent and reductive groups over finite fields. The essence of our investigation is whether the dimension data of irreducible representations of a finite group can be ``geometerized'', to become equal to the cardinality of certain orbit spaces. The first part of this paper deals with nilpotent and reductive groups over finite fields, whereas the second part deals with the symmetric group $S_n$. The main conclusion that we want to bring out to contrast these two cases is that for reductive groups over finite fields, the dimension data is concentrated (in a statistical sense) in a neighborhood of the maximal dimension, whereas for the symmetric group, it is spread out.

Quadrangulations and the Lovász complex
The Lovász complex $L(G)$ of a graph $G$ is a deformation retract of its neighborhood complex, equipped with a canonical $Z_2$-action. We show that, under mild assumptions, $L(G)$ is homeomorphic to a surface if and only if $G$ is a non-bipartite quadrangulation of the orbit space $L(G)/Z_2$ in which every $4$-cycle is facial. This yields a classification of the Lovász complexes of all such quadrangulations. As an application, we contextualize a result of Archdeacon \emph{et al.}\ and Mohar and Seymour on the chromatic number of quadrangulations, obtaining a stronger statement about the $Z_2$-index.

Regular genus of $\mathbb{S}^2 \times \mathbb{S}^1 \times \mathbb{S}^1$, $4$-torus, and small covers over $Δ^2 \times Δ^2$
A crystallization of a PL manifold is an edge-colored graph encoding a contracted triangulation of the manifold. The concept of regular genus generalizes the notions of surface genus and Heegaard genus for 3-manifolds to higher-dimensional closed PL manifolds. The regular genus of a PL manifold is a PL invariant. Determining the regular genus of a closed PL $n$-manifold remains a fundamental challenge in combinatorial topology. In this article, we first resolve a conjecture by proving that the regular genus of $\mathbb{S}^2 \times \mathbb{S}^1 \times \mathbb{S}^1$ is 6. Additionally, we determine that the regular genus of $\mathbb{S}^1 \times \mathbb{S}^1 \times \mathbb{S}^1 \times \mathbb{S}^1$ is 16. We also present some observations related to the regular genus of the $n$-dimensional torus and conjecture that the regular genus of $\mathbb{S}^1 \times \mathbb{S}^1 \times \cdots \times \mathbb{S}^1$ ($n$ times) is $1+\frac{(n+1)! \ (n-3)}{8}$, for $n\ge 5$. Then, we investigate the regular genus of small covers. Small covers are closed $n$-manifolds admitting a locally standard $\mathbb{Z}_2^n$-action with orbit space homeomorphic to a simple convex polytope $P^n$. For the polytope $P = Δ^2 \times Δ^2$, we classify all the small covers up to Davis-Januszkiewicz (D-J) equivalence and show that there are exactly seven such covers. Among these, one is $\mathbb{RP}^2 \times \mathbb{RP}^2$, while the others are $\mathbb{RP}^2$-bundles over $\mathbb{RP}^2$. Remarkably, each of these seven small covers has the regular genus 8. Results in this article provide explicit regular genus values for several important 4-manifolds, offering new insights and tools for future work in combinatorial topology.

Crystallizations of small covers over the $n$-simplex $Δ^n$ and the prism $Δ^{n-1} \times I$
A crystallization of a PL manifold is an edge-colored graph that corresponds to a contracted triangulation of the manifold, facilitating the study of its topological and combinatorial properties. A small cover over a simple convex $n$-polytope $P^n$ is a closed $n$-manifold with a locally standard $\mathbb{Z}_2^n$-action such that its orbit space is homeomorphic to $P^n$. In this article, we study the crystallizations of small covers over the $n$-simplex $Δ^n$ and the prism $Δ^{n-1} \times I$. It is known that the small cover over the $n$-simplex $Δ^n$ is $\mathbb{RP}^n$. For every $n\geq 2$, we prove that $\mathbb{RP}^n$ has a unique $2^n$-vertex crystallization. We also demonstrate that there are exactly $1 + 2^{n-1}$ D-J equivalence classes of small covers over the prism $Δ^{n-1} \times I$, where $n\geq 3$. For each $\mathbb{Z}_2$-characteristic function of $Δ^{n-1} \times I$, we construct a $2^{n-1}(n+1)$-vertex crystallization of the small cover $M^n(λ)$ with regular genus $1 + 2^{n-4}(n^2 - 2n - 3)$, where $n\geq 4$. In particular, we construct four orientable and four non-orientable $\mathbb{RP}^3$-bundles over $\mathbb{S}^1$ up to D-J equivalence with regular genus 6.

Hyperelliptic four-manifolds defined by vector-colorings of simple polytopes
Toric topology assigns to each simple convex $n$-polytope $P$ with $m$ facets an $n$-dimensional real moment angle manifold $\mathbb RZ_P$ with a canonical action of $\mathbb Z_2^m=(\mathbb Z/2\mathbb Z)^m$. We consider (non-necessarily free) actions of subgroups $H\subset \mathbb Z_2^m$ on $\mathbb RZ_P$. The orbit space $N(P,H)=\mathbb RZ_P/H$ has an action of $\mathbb Z_2^m/H$. For general $n$ we introduce the notion of a Hamiltonian $C(n,k)$-subcomplex in the boundary of an $n$-polytope $P$ generalizing the notions of a Hamiltonian cycle ($k=2$), Hamiltonian theta-subgraph ($k=3$) and Hamiltonian $K_4$-subgraph ($k=4)$ in the $1$-skeleton of a $3$-polytope. Each $C(n,k)$-subcomplex $C\subset \partial P$ corresponds to a subgroup $H_C\subset\mathbb Z_2^m$ such that $N(P,H_C)\simeq S^n$. We prove that in dimensions $n\leqslant 4$ this correspondence is a bijection. Any subgroup $H\subset \mathbb Z_2^m$ defines a complex $C(P,H)\subset \partial P$. We prove that each Hamiltonian $C(n,k)$-subcomplex $C\subset C(P,H)$ inducing $H$ corresponds to a hyperelliptic involution $τ_C\in\mathbb Z_2^m/H$ on the manifold $N(P,H)$ (that is, an involution with the orbit space homeomorphic to $S^n$) and in dimensions $n\leqslant 4$ this correspondence is a bijection. We prove that for the geometries $\mathbb X= \mathbb S^4$, $\mathbb S^3\times\mathbb R$, $\mathbb S^2\times \mathbb S^2$, $\mathbb S^2\times \mathbb R^2$, $\mathbb S^2\times \mathbb L^2$, and $\mathbb L^2\times \mathbb L^2$ there exists a compact right-angled $4$-polytope $P$ with a free action of $H$ such that the geometric manifold $N(P,H)$ has a hyperelliptic involution in $\mathbb Z_2^m/H$, and for $\mathbb X=\mathbb R^4$, $\mathbb L^4$, $\mathbb L^3\times \mathbb R$ and $\mathbb L^2\times \mathbb R^2$ there are no such polytopes.

Manifolds realized as orbit spaces of non-free $\mathbb Z_2^k$-actions on real moment-angle manifolds
We consider (non-necessarily free) actions of subgroups $H\subset \mathbb Z_2^m$ on the real moment-angle manifold $\mathbb R\mathcal{Z}_P$ corresponding to a simple convex $n$ polytope $P$ with $m$ facets. The criterion when the orbit space $\mathbb R\mathcal{Z}_P/H$ is a topological manifold (perhaps with a boundary) can be extracted from results by M.A. Mikhailova and C. Lange. For any dimension $n$ we construct series of manifolds $\mathbb R\mathcal{Z}_P/H$ homeomorphic to $S^n$ and series of manifolds $M^n=\mathbb R\mathcal{Z}_P/H$ admitting a hyperelliptic involution $τ\in\mathbb Z_2^m/H$, that is an involution $τ$ such that $M^n/\langleτ\rangle$ is homeomorphic to $S^n$. For any simple $3$-polytope $P$ we classify all subgroups $H\subset\mathbb Z_2^m$ such that $\mathbb R\mathcal{Z}_P/H$ is homeomorphic to $S^3$. For any simple $3$-polytope $P$ and any subgroup $H\subset\mathbb Z_2^m$ we classify all hyperelliptic involutions $τ\in\mathbb Z_2^m/H$ acting on $\mathbb R\mathcal{Z}_P/H$. As a corollary we obtain that a $3$-dimensional small cover has $3$ hyperelliptic involutions in $\mathbb Z_2^3$ if and only if it is a rational homology $3$-sphere and if and only if it correspond to a triple of Hamiltonian cycles such that each edge of the polytope belongs to exactly two of them.

Contractibility of the orbit space of a saturated fusion system after Steinberg
Published • View PublicationBIB
Recently, Steinberg used discrete Morse theory to give a new proof of a theorem of Symonds that the orbit space of the poset of nontrivial $p$-subgroups of a finite group is contractible. We extend Steinberg's argument in two ways, covering more general versions of the theorem that were already known. In particular, following a strategy of Libman, we give a discrete Morse theoretic argument for the contractibility of the orbit space of a saturated fusion system.

Contractibility of the orbit space of the $p$-subgroup complex via Brown-Forman discrete Morse theory
We give a simple proof that the orbit space of the $p$-subgroup complex of a finite group is contractible using Brown-Forman discrete Morse theory. This result was originally conjectured by Webb and proved by Symonds.

Existence of a small cover over a 15-colorable simple 4-polytope
The chromatic number for properly colouring the facets of a combinatorial simple $n$-polytope $P^n$ that is the orbit space of a quasitoric manifold satisfies the inequality $n\leq P^n\leq 2^n-1$. The inequality is sharp for $n=2$ but not for $n=3$ due to the Four Color theorem. In this note, we construct a simple 4-polytope admitting a characteristic map whose chromatic number equals $15$ and deduce that the predicted upper bound is attained for $n=4$. Analogues results are verified for the case of oriented small covers in dimensions $4$ and $5$.

Toric orbit spaces which are manifolds
Published in Toric Orbit Spaces Which are Manifolds. Arnold Math J. 10, 387-408 (2024) • View PublicationBIB
We characterize the actions of compact tori on smooth manifolds for which the orbit space is a topological manifold (either closed or with boundary). For closed manifolds the result was originally proved by Styrt in 2009. We give a new proof for closed manifolds which is also applicable to manifolds with boundary. In our arguments we use the result of Provan and Billera who characterized matroid complexes which are pseudomanifolds. We study the combinatorial structure of torus actions whose orbit spaces are manifolds. In two appendix sections we give an overview of two theories related to our work. The first one is the combinatorial theory of Leontief substitution systems from mathematical economics. The second one is the topological Kaluza--Klein model of Dirac's monopole studied by Atiyah. The aim of these sections is to draw some bridges between disciplines and motivate further studies in toric topology.

The moment polytope of the abelian polygon space
Published • View PublicationBIB
The moduli space of $n$ chains in the plane with generic side lengths that terminate on a fixed line is a smooth, closed manifold of dimension $n-1$. This manifold is also equipped with a locally standard action of $\mathbb{Z}_2^{n-1}$. The orbit space of this action is a simple polytope called the moment polytope. Interestingly, this manifold is also the fixed point set of an involution on a toric manifold known as the abelian polygon space. In this article we show that the moment polytope of the moduli space of chains is completely characterized by the combinatorial data, called the \emph{short code} of the length vector. We also classify aspherical chain spaces using a result of Davis, Januszkiewicz and Scott.

Orbit spaces of equivariantly formal torus actions of complexity one

Let a compact torus $T=T^{n-1}$ act on an orientable smooth compact manifold $X=X^{2n}$ effectively, with nonempty finite set of fixed points, and suppose that stabilizers of all points are connected. If $H^{odd}(X)=0$ and the weights of tangent representation at each fixed point are in general position, we prove that the orbit space $Q=X/T$ is a homology $(n+1)$-sphere. If, in addition, $π_1(X)=0$, then $Q$ is homeomorphic to $S^{n+1}$. We introduce the notion of $j$-generality of tangent weights of torus action. For any action of $T^k$ on $X^{2n}$ with isolated fixed points and $H^{odd}(X)=0$, we prove that $j$-generality of weights implies $(j+1)$-acyclicity of the orbit space $Q$. This statement generalizes several known results for actions of complexity zero and one. In complexity one, we give a criterion of equivariant formality in terms of the orbit space. In this case, we give a formula expressing Betti numbers of a manifold in terms of certain combinatorial structure that sits in the orbit space.

Torus actions of complexity one in non-general position
Published in Osaka J. Math. 58:4 (2021), 839-853 • Search Publication
Let the compact torus $T^{n-1}$ act on a smooth compact manifold $X^{2n}$ effectively with nonempty finite set of fixed points. We pose the question: what can be said about the orbit space $X^{2n}/T^{n-1}$ if the action is cohomologically equivariantly formal (which essentially means that $H^{odd}(X^{2n};\mathbb{Z})=0$). It happens that homology of the orbit space can be arbitrary in degrees $3$ and higher. For any finite simplicial complex $L$ we construct an equivariantly formal manifold $X^{2n}$ such that $X^{2n}/T^{n-1}$ is homotopy equivalent to $Σ^3L$. The constructed manifold $X^{2n}$ is the total space of the projective line bundle over the permutohedral variety hence the action on $X^{2n}$ is Hamiltonian and cohomologically equivariantly formal. We introduce the notion of the action in $j$-general position and prove that, for any simplicial complex $M$, there exists an equivariantly formal action of complexity one in $j$-general position such that its orbit space is homotopy equivalent to $Σ^{j+2}M$.

Space of isospectral periodic tridiagonal matrices
Published in Algebr. Geom. Topol. 20 (2020) 2957-2994 • View PublicationBIB
A periodic tridiagonal matrix is a tridiagonal matrix with additional two entries at the corners. We study the space $X_{n,λ}$ of Hermitian periodic tridiagonal $n\times n$-matrices with a fixed simple spectrum $λ$. Using the discretized Shrödinger operator we describe all spectra $λ$ for which $X_{n,λ}$ is a topological manifold. The space $X_{n,λ}$ carries a natural effective action of a compact $(n-1)$-torus. We describe the topology of its orbit space and, in particular, show that whenever the isospectral space is a manifold, its orbit space is homeomorphic to $S^4\times T^{n-3}$. There is a classical dynamical system: the flow of the periodic Toda lattice, acting on $X_{n,λ}$. Except for the degenerate locus $X_{n,λ}^0$, the Toda lattice exhibits Liouville--Arnold behavior, so that the space $X_{n,λ}\setminus X_{n,λ}^0$ is fibered into tori. The degenerate locus of the Toda system is described in terms of combinatorial geometry: its structure is encoded in the special cell subdivision of a torus, which is obtained from the regular tiling of the euclidean space by permutohedra. We apply methods of commutative algebra and toric topology to describe the cohomology and equivariant cohomology modules of $X_{n,λ}$.

Manifolds of isospectral arrow matrices
Published in Sbornik: Mathematics 212:5 (2021), 3-36 • Search Publication
An arrow matrix is a matrix with zeroes outside the main diagonal, first row, and first column. We consider the space $M_{St_n,λ}$ of Hermitian arrow $(n+1)\times (n+1)$-matrices with fixed simple spectrum $λ$. We prove that this space is a smooth $2n$-manifold, and its smooth structure is independent on the spectrum. Next, this manifold carries the locally standard torus action: we describe the topology and combinatorics of its orbit space. If $n\geqslant 3$, the orbit space $M_{St_n,λ}/T^n$ is not a polytope, hence this manifold is not quasitoric. However, there is a natural permutation action on $M_{St_n,λ}$ which induces the combined action of a semidirect product $T^n\rtimesΣ_n$. The orbit space of this large action is a simple polytope. The structure of this polytope is described in the paper. In case $n=3$, the space $M_{St_3,λ}/T^3$ is a solid torus with boundary subdivided into hexagons in a regular way. This description allows to compute the cohomology ring and equivariant cohomology ring of the 6-dimensional manifold $M_{St_3,λ}$ using the general theory developed by the first author. This theory is also applied to a certain $6$-dimensional manifold called the twin of $M_{St_3,λ}$. The twin carries a half-dimensional torus action and has nontrivial tangent and normal bundles.

Hypergroup Deformations of Semigroups

We view the well-known example of the dual of a countable compact hypergroup, motivated by the orbit space of p-adic integers by Dunkl and Ramirez (1975), as hypergroup deformation of the max semigroup structure on the linearly ordered set $\mathbb{Z}_+$ of the non-negative integers along the diagonal. This works as motivation for us to study hypergroups or semi convolution spaces arising from "max" semigroups or general commutative semigroups via hypergroup deformation on idempotents.
