Hyperelliptic four-manifolds defined by vector-colorings of simple polytopes
Toric topology assigns to each simple convex $n$-polytope $P$ with $m$ facets an $n$-dimensional real moment angle manifold $\mathbb RZ_P$ with a canonical action of $\mathbb Z_2^m=(\mathbb Z/2\mathbb Z)^m$. We consider (non-necessarily free) actions of subgroups $H\subset \mathbb Z_2^m$ on $\mathbb RZ_P$. The orbit space $N(P,H)=\mathbb RZ_P/H$ has an action of $\mathbb Z_2^m/H$. For general $n$ we introduce the notion of a Hamiltonian $C(n,k)$-subcomplex in the boundary of an $n$-polytope $P$ generalizing the notions of a Hamiltonian cycle ($k=2$), Hamiltonian theta-subgraph ($k=3$) and Hamiltonian $K_4$-subgraph ($k=4)$ in the $1$-skeleton of a $3$-polytope. Each $C(n,k)$-subcomplex $C\subset \partial P$ corresponds to a subgroup $H_C\subset\mathbb Z_2^m$ such that $N(P,H_C)\simeq S^n$. We prove that in dimensions $n\leqslant 4$ this correspondence is a bijection. Any subgroup $H\subset \mathbb Z_2^m$ defines a complex $C(P,H)\subset \partial P$. We prove that each Hamiltonian $C(n,k)$-subcomplex $C\subset C(P,H)$ inducing $H$ corresponds to a hyperelliptic involution $τ_C\in\mathbb Z_2^m/H$ on the manifold $N(P,H)$ (that is, an involution with the orbit space homeomorphic to $S^n$) and in dimensions $n\leqslant 4$ this correspondence is a bijection. We prove that for the geometries $\mathbb X= \mathbb S^4$, $\mathbb S^3\times\mathbb R$, $\mathbb S^2\times \mathbb S^2$, $\mathbb S^2\times \mathbb R^2$, $\mathbb S^2\times \mathbb L^2$, and $\mathbb L^2\times \mathbb L^2$ there exists a compact right-angled $4$-polytope $P$ with a free action of $H$ such that the geometric manifold $N(P,H)$ has a hyperelliptic involution in $\mathbb Z_2^m/H$, and for $\mathbb X=\mathbb R^4$, $\mathbb L^4$, $\mathbb L^3\times \mathbb R$ and $\mathbb L^2\times \mathbb R^2$ there are no such polytopes.

Bier spheres and toric topology
Published in Proc. Steklov Inst. Math., 326 (2024), 252-268 • Search Publication
We compute the real and complex Buchstaber numbers of an arbitrary Bier sphere. In dimension two, we identify all the 13 different combinatorial types of Bier spheres and show that 12 of them are nerve complexes of nestohedra, while the remaining one is a nerve complex of a generalized permutohedron. As an application of our results, we construct a regular normal fan for each of those 13 Delzant polytopes, compute the cohomology rings of the corresponding nonsingular projective toric varieties, and examine the orientability of the corresponding small covers.

Toric orbit spaces which are manifolds
Published in Toric Orbit Spaces Which are Manifolds. Arnold Math J. 10, 387-408 (2024) • View PublicationBIB
We characterize the actions of compact tori on smooth manifolds for which the orbit space is a topological manifold (either closed or with boundary). For closed manifolds the result was originally proved by Styrt in 2009. We give a new proof for closed manifolds which is also applicable to manifolds with boundary. In our arguments we use the result of Provan and Billera who characterized matroid complexes which are pseudomanifolds. We study the combinatorial structure of torus actions whose orbit spaces are manifolds. In two appendix sections we give an overview of two theories related to our work. The first one is the combinatorial theory of Leontief substitution systems from mathematical economics. The second one is the topological Kaluza--Klein model of Dirac's monopole studied by Atiyah. The aim of these sections is to draw some bridges between disciplines and motivate further studies in toric topology.

Topological approach to diagonalization algorithms
In this paper we prove that there exists an asymptotical diagonalization algorithm for a class of sparse Hermitian (or real symmetric) matrices if and only if the matrices become Hessenberg matrices after some permutation of rows and columns. The proof is based on Morse theory, Roberts' theorem on indifference graphs, toric topology, and computer-based homological calculations.

Cluster-permutohedra and submanifolds of flag varieties with torus actions
Published in Int. Math. Res. Notices, rnad076, 2023 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we describe a relation between the notion of graphicahedron, introduced by Araujo-Pardo, Del Río-Francos, López-Dudet, Oliveros, and Schulte in 2010, and toric topology of manifolds of sparse isospectral Hermitian matrices. More precisely, we recall the notion of a cluster-permutohedron, a certain finite poset defined for a simple graph $Γ$. This poset is build as a combination of cosets of the symmetric group, and the geometric lattice of the graphical matroid of $Γ$. This poset is similar to the graphicahedron of $Γ$, in particular, 1-skeleta of both posets are isomorphic to Cayley graphs of the symmetric group. We describe the relation between cluster-permutohedron and graphicahedron using Galois connection and the notion of a core of a finite topology. We further prove that the face poset of the natural torus action on the manifold of isospectral $Γ$-shaped Hermitian matrices is isomorphic to the cluster-permutohedron. Using recent results in toric topology, we show that homotopy properties of graphicahedra may serve an obstruction to equivariant formality of isospectral matrix manifolds. We introduce a generalization of a cluster-permutohedron and describe the combinatorial structure of a large family of manifolds with torus actions, including Grassmann manifolds and partial flag manifolds.

Matroids in toric topology
In this paper we study general torus actions on manifolds with isolated fixed points from combinatorial point of view. The main object of study is the poset of face submanifolds of such actions. We introduce the notion of a locally geometric poset -- the graded poset locally modelled by geometric lattices, and prove that for any torus action, the poset of its faces is locally geometric. Next we discuss the relations between posets of faces and GKM-theory. In particular, we define the face poset of an abstract GKM-graph and show how to reconstruct the face poset of a manifold from its GKM-graph.

$B$-rigidity of ideal almost Pogorelov polytopes
Toric topology assigns to each $n$-dimensional combinatorial simple convex polytope $P$ with $m$ facets an $(m+n)$-dimensional moment-angle manifold $\mathcal{Z}_P$ with an action of a compact torus $T^m$ such that $\mathcal{Z}_P/T^m$ is a convex polytope of combinatorial type $P$. A simple $n$-polytope is called $B$-rigid, if any isomorphism of graded rings $H^*(\mathcal{Z}_P,\mathbb Z)= H^*(\mathcal{Z}_Q,\mathbb Z)$ for a simple $n$-polytope $Q$ implies that $P$ and $Q$ are combinatorially equivalent. An ideal almost Pogorelov polytope is a combinatorial $3$-polytope obtained by cutting off all the ideal vertices of an ideal right-angled polytope in the Lobachevsky (hyperbolic) space $\mathbb L^3$. These polytopes are exactly the polytopes obtained from any, not necessarily simple, convex $3$-polytopes by cutting off all the vertices followed by cutting off all the "old" edges. The boundary of the dual polytope is the barycentric subdivision of the boundary of the old polytope (and also of its dual polytope). We prove that any ideal almost Pogorelov polytope is $B$-rigid. This produces three cohomologically rigid families of manifolds over ideal almost Pogorelov manifolds: moment-angle manifolds, canonical $6$-dimensional quasitoric manifolds and canonical $3$-dimensional small covers, which are "pullbacks from the linear model".

$B$-rigidity of the property to be an almost Pogorelov polytope

Toric topology assigns to each $n$-dimensional combinatorial simple convex polytope $P$ with $m$ facets an $(m+n)$-dimensional moment-angle manifold $\mathcal{Z}_P$ with an action of a compact torus $T^m$ such that $\mathcal{Z}_P/T^m$ is a convex polytope of combinatorial type $P$. We study the notion of $B$-rigidity. A property of a polytope $P$ is called $B$-rigid, if any isomorphism of graded rings $H^*(\mathcal{Z}_P,\mathbb Z)= H^*(\mathcal{Z}_Q,\mathbb Z)$ for a simple $n$-polytope $Q$ implies that it also has this property. We study families of $3$-dimensional polytopes defined by their cyclic $k$-edge-connectivity. These families include flag polytopes and Pogorelov polytopes, that is polytopes realizable as bounded right-angled polytopes in Lobachevsky space $\mathbb L^3$. Pogorelov polytopes include fullerenes -- simple polytopes with only pentagonal and hexagonal faces. It is known that the properties to be flag and Pogorelov polytope are $B$-rigid. We focus on almost Pogorelov polytopes, which are strongly cyclically $4$-edge-connected polytopes. They correspond to right-angled polytopes of finite volume in $\mathbb L^3$. There is a subfamily of ideal almost Pogorelov polytopes corresponding to ideal right-angled polytopes. We prove that the properties to be an almost Pogorelov polytope and an ideal almost Pogorelov polytope are $B$-rigid. As a corollary we obtain that $3$-dimensional associahedron $As^3$ and permutohedron $Pe^3$ are $B$-rigid. We generalize methods known for Pogorelov polytopes. We obtain results on $B$-rigidity of subsets in $H^*(\mathcal{Z}_P,\mathbb Z)$ and prove an analog of the so-called separable circuit condition (SCC). As an example we consider the ring $H^*(\mathcal{Z}_{As^3},\mathbb Z)$.

Toric spaces and face enumeration on simplicial manifolds
In this paper, we study the well-know $g$-conjecture for rational homology spheres in a topological way. To do this, we construct a class of topological spaces with torus actions, which can be viewed as topological generalizations of toric varieties. Along this way we prove that after doing stellar subdivision operations at some middle dimensional faces of an arbitrary rational homology sphere, the $g$-conjecture is valid. Furthermore, we give topological proofs of several fundamental algebraic results about Buchsbaum complexes and simplicial manifolds. In this process, we also get a few interesting results in toric topology.

Massey products, toric topology and combinatorics of polytopes

In this paper we introduce a direct family of simple polytopes $P^{0}\subset P^{1}\subset\ldots$ such that for any $k$, $2\leq k\leq n$ there are non-trivial strictly defined Massey products of order $k$ in the cohomology rings of their moment-angle manifolds $\mathcal Z_{P^n}$. We prove that the direct sequence of manifolds $\ast\subset S^{3}\hookrightarrow\ldots\hookrightarrow\mathcal Z_{P^n}\hookrightarrow\mathcal Z_{P^{n+1}}\hookrightarrow\ldots$ has the following properties: every manifold $\mathcal Z_{P^n}$ is a retract of $\mathcal Z_{P^{n+1}}$, and one has inverse sequences in cohomology (over $n$ and $k$, where $k\to\infty$ as $n\to\infty$) of the Massey products constructed. As an application we get that there are non-trivial differentials $d_k$, for arbitrarily large $k$ as $n\to\infty$ in the Eilenberg--Moore spectral sequence connecting the rings $H^*(ΩX)$ and $H^*(X)$ with coefficients in a field, where $X=\mathcal Z_{P^n}$.

Polyhedral products and features of their homotopy theory
A polyhedral product is a natural subspace of a Cartesian product that is specified by a simplicial complex. The modern formalism arose as a generalization of the spaces known as moment-angle complexes which were developed within the nascent subject of toric topology. This field, which began as a topological approach to toric geometry and aspects of symplectic geometry, has expanded rapidly in recent years. The investigation of polyhedral products and their homotopy theoretic properties has developed to the point where they are studied in various fields of mathematics far removed from their origin. In this survey, we provide a brief historical overview of the development of this subject, summarize many of the main results and describe applications.

Whitehead products in moment-angle complexes
Published • View PublicationBIB
In toric topology, to a simplicial complex $K$ with $m$ vertices, one associates two spaces, the moment-angle complex $\mathcal{Z}_K$ and the Davis-Januszkiewicz space $DJ_K$. These spaces are connected by a homotopy fibration $\mathcal{Z}_K\to DJ_K\to(\mathbb{C}P^\infty)^m$. In this paper, we show that the map $\mathcal{Z}_K\to DJ_K$ is identified with a wedge of iterated (higher) Whitehead products for a certain class of simplicial complexes $K$ including dual shellable complexes. We will prove the result in a more general setting of polyhedral products.

Space of isospectral periodic tridiagonal matrices
Published in Algebr. Geom. Topol. 20 (2020) 2957-2994 • View PublicationBIB
A periodic tridiagonal matrix is a tridiagonal matrix with additional two entries at the corners. We study the space $X_{n,λ}$ of Hermitian periodic tridiagonal $n\times n$-matrices with a fixed simple spectrum $λ$. Using the discretized Shrödinger operator we describe all spectra $λ$ for which $X_{n,λ}$ is a topological manifold. The space $X_{n,λ}$ carries a natural effective action of a compact $(n-1)$-torus. We describe the topology of its orbit space and, in particular, show that whenever the isospectral space is a manifold, its orbit space is homeomorphic to $S^4\times T^{n-3}$. There is a classical dynamical system: the flow of the periodic Toda lattice, acting on $X_{n,λ}$. Except for the degenerate locus $X_{n,λ}^0$, the Toda lattice exhibits Liouville--Arnold behavior, so that the space $X_{n,λ}\setminus X_{n,λ}^0$ is fibered into tori. The degenerate locus of the Toda system is described in terms of combinatorial geometry: its structure is encoded in the special cell subdivision of a torus, which is obtained from the regular tiling of the euclidean space by permutohedra. We apply methods of commutative algebra and toric topology to describe the cohomology and equivariant cohomology modules of $X_{n,λ}$.

Simplicial $G$-complexes and representation stability of polyhedral products
Published in Algebr. Geom. Topol. 20 (2020) 215-238 • View PublicationBIB
Representation stability in the sense of Church-Farb is concerned with stable properties of representations of sequences of algebraic structures, in particular of groups. We study this notion on objects arising in toric topology. With a simplicial $G$-complex $K$ and a topological pair $(X, A)$, a $G$-polyhedral product $(X, A)^K$ is associated. We show that the homotopy decomposition [2] of $Σ(X, A)^K$ is then $G$-equivariant after suspension. In the case of $Σ_m$-polyhedral products, we give criteria on simplicial $Σ_m$-complexes which imply representation stability of $Σ_m$-representations $\{H_i((X, A)^{K_m})\}$.
Universal simplicial complexes inspired by toric topology
Let $\mathbf{k}$ be the field $\mathbb{F}_p$ or the ring $\mathbb{Z}$. We study combinatorial and topological properties of the universal simplicial complexes $X(\mathbf{k}^n)$ and $K(\mathbf{k}^n)$ whose simplices are certain unimodular subsets of $\mathbf{k}^n$. As a main result we show that $X(\mathbf{k}^n)$, $K(\mathbf{k}^n)$ and the links of their simplicies are homotopy equivalent to a wedge of spheres specifying the exact number of spheres in the corresponding wedge decompositions. This is a generalisation of Davis and Januszkiewicz's result that $K(\mathbb{Z}^n)$ and $K(\mathbb{F}_2^n)$ are $(n-2)$-connected simplicial complexes. We discuss applications of these universal simplicial complexes to toric topology and number theory.

Surprising Examples of Manifolds in Toric Topology!
We investigate small covers and quasitoric over the duals of neighborly simplicial polytopes with small number of vertices in dimensions $4$, $5$, $6$ and $7$. In the most of the considered cases we obtain the complete classification of small covers. The lifting conjecture in all cases is verified to be true. The problem of cohomological rigidity for small covers is also studied and we have found a whole new series of weakly cohomologically rigid simple polytopes. New examples of manifolds provide the first known examples of quasitoric manifolds in higher dimensions whose orbit polytopes have chromatic numbers $χ(P^n)\geq 3n-5$.

Criterion for the Buchstaber invariant of simplicial complexes to be equal to two
In this paper we study the Buchstaber invariant of simplicial complexes, which comes from toric topology. With each simplicial complex $K$ on $m$ vertices we can associate a moment-angle complex $\mathcal Z_K$ with a canonical action of the compact torus $T^m$. Then $s(K)$ is the maximal dimension of a toric subgroup that acts freely on $\mathcal Z_K$. We develop the Buchstaber invariant theory from the viewpoint of the set of minimal non-simplices of $K$. It is easy to show that $s(K)=1$ if and only if any two and any three minimal non-simplices intersect. For $K=\partial P^*$, where $P$ is a simple polytope, this implies that $P$ is a simplex. The case $s(P)=2$ is such more complicated. For example, for any $k\geqslant 2$ there exists an $n$-polytope with $n+k$ facets such that $s(P)=2$. Our main result is the criterion for the Buchstaber invariant of a simplicial complex $K$ to be equal to two.

A new graph invariant arises in toric topology
Published in J. Math. Soc. Japan, 67(2) (2015), 699-720 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we introduce new combinatorial invariants of any finite simple graph, which arise in toric topology. We compute the $i$-th (rational) Betti number and Euler characteristic of the real toric variety associated to a graph associahedron $P_{\B(G)}$. They can be calculated by a purely combinatorial method (in terms of graphs) and are named $a_i(G)$ and $b(G)$, respectively. To our surprise, for specific families of the graph $G$, our invariants are deeply related to well-known combinatorial sequences such as the Catalan numbers and Euler zigzag numbers.
