Combinatorial and algebraic proofs of Keller's $A_2\square A_2$ $q$-dilogarithm identity
The classical Durfee-square argument gives a combinatorial proof of the pentagon identity for the quantum dilogarithm. Just as the pentagon identity is associated with the $A_2$ quiver, Keller's identity is associated with the square-product quiver $A_2\square A_2$. Previous proofs of Keller's identity use cluster categories or spectral sequences in rapid-decay equivariant cohomology. We give three proofs of Keller's identity: a generating-function proof, an explicit weight-preserving bijection on colored partitions, and a standard-monomial proof using a four-colored arc algebra. Their common mechanism is an iterated Durfee decomposition: two possible pairings give horizontal and vertical decompositions, while a third binary step accounts for the coupling factor. These constructions provide a ``superpotential analogue'' of the Durfee-square argument.

Symmetry in Equivariant cohomology of $\mathbb{P}^n$
We resolve a problem of Anderson and Fulton by providing a symmetric and positive product rule for the equivariant cohomology of projective space.

Torus Equivariant Cohomology for the $Δ$-Springer Fiber
We define a torus $U \subset T = (\mathbb{C}^\times)^K$ which acts on the $Δ$-Springer varieties $Y_{n,λ,s}$ defined by Griffin-Levinson-Woo and give a Borel-style presentation for the equivariant cohomology ring $H^*_U(Y_{n,λ,s})$. Our presentation arises from the orbit harmonics deformation technique, and uses methods of Chou-Matsumura-Rhoades and Abe-Horiguchi.

Basis Criteria for Extending Generalized Splines
Let $R$ be a commutative ring with identity and $G$ a graph. Extending generalized splines are a further extension of generalized splines by allowing vertex labels of $G$ to lie in varying modules rather than in a fixed ring $R$. Geometrically, this corresponds to the construction of equivariant cohomology by Braden and MacPherson (see [5]). Therefore, characterizing such splines has immediate implications in geometry, particularly in the computation of equivariant cohomology. In this paper, we study extending generalized splines as a $R$- module in which each vertex $v$ is labeled by $M_v = m_v R$ and each edge $e$ is labeled by $M_e = R/r_e R$ together with quotient $R$-module homomorphisms $M_v\to M_e$ for each vertex $v$ incident to the edge $e$, where $R$ is a greatest common divisor domain (GCD). We characterize module bases of such splines in terms of determinants so that it provides a criterion for freeness of spline modules.

The local homological structure of generalized splines
Generalized splines are a simultaneous generalization of GKM theory -- which studies equivariant cohomology -- and classical splines, which provide piecewise approximations of functions. Generalized splines can also be understood via schemes, with the interpolation constraints -- or so-called GKM-condition -- encoded by gluing along certain closed subschemes. This view provides a local-global principle, with the local pictures retaining the generalized spline structure. Consequently, the behavior of generalized splines over local rings controls certain global phenomena, such as projectivity and often freeness. We introduce an interface between the homological study of local rings and the combinatorial study of generalized splines. We identify precisely how the generalized spline structure coordinates with the existing homological local ring machinery. This is accomplished by two exact sequences that provide a regulatory structure on the local cohomology of a generalized spline module. As an application, we use this to prove that for any edge-labeled graph $G$ with principal ideal labels, and any Cohen-Macaulay ring $R$ of Krull dimension 2 at each maximal ideal, the module of splines $R_G$ is free, provided it has finite projective dimension. As a special case, this implies every generalized spline module over $k[x,y]$ with principal edge labels is free.

Three formulas for CSM classes of open quiver loci
In the space of equioriented type $A$ quiver representations, we define subvarieties called "open quiver loci" by placing strict rank conditions on the maps within representations. The closures of these subvarieties are the quiver loci, whose equivariant cohomology classes are the quiver polynomials of Buch and Fulton. We present one geometric formula and two combinatorial formulas that compute equivariant Chern--Schwartz--MacPherson (CSM) classes of open quiver loci; these classes refine the data of the quiver polynomials. The second combinatorial formula is in terms of "chained generic pipe dreams," which modify the pipe dreams of Bergeron and Billey to more strongly resemble the lacing diagrams of Abeasis and Del Fra. We also present two new formulas for quiver polynomials; these are streamlined versions of known formulas due to Knutson, Miller, and Shimozono, in the sense that they contain fewer terms.

Combinatorial Aspects of Elliptic Schubert Calculus
The main goal of this paper is to extend two fundamental combinatorial results in Schubert calculus on flag manifolds from equivariant cohomology and $K$-theory to equivariant elliptic cohomology. The foundations of elliptic Schubert calculus were laid in a few relatively recent papers by Rimányi, Weber, and Kumar. They include the recursive construction of elliptic Schubert classes via generalizations of the cohomology and $K$-theory push-pull operators and the study of the corresponding Demazure algebra. We derive a Billey-type formula for the localization of elliptic Schubert classes (for partial flag manifolds of arbitrary type) and a pipe dream model for their polynomial representatives in the case of type $A$ flag manifolds. The latter extends the pipe dream model for double Schubert and Grothendieck polynomials. We also study the degeneration of elliptic Schubert classes to $K$-theory, which recovers the corresponding classical formulas.

A scheme-theoretic interpretation of generalized splines
Classical splines feature prominently in approximation theory and numerical analysis, while GKM theory arises in the study of equivariant cohomology. More recently, generalized splines have been studied which simultaneously generalize both classical splines and GKM theory. We show that generalized splines can be understood as a scheme-theoretic phenomenon, and establish the foundations for working with generalized splines via scheme theory. To do this, we first prove that the ring of generalized splines over an edge-labeled graph is isomorphic to the limit of a diagram associated to the edge-labeled graph. This is used to establish the connection to scheme theory, and in particular to secure a local--global principle for generalized splines. The secondary aim of the paper is to catalog a variety of initial local--global results. We prove a module of multivariate generalized splines over $k[x,y]$ is free when an edge-labeled graph is locally trivial or determined by a cycle on a standard cover, provide criteria for generalized splines over UFDs to be finite projective, for multivariate generalized splines to be free, along with other results. The appendix includes a variety of examples which demonstrate precise experimental control over when a module of splines is free, with computer verification by Macaulay2. We conclude with an account of how deletion and contraction affect the spectrum of a ring of splines.

Divided difference operators for Hessenberg representations
The equivariant cohomology ring of a regular semisimple Hessenberg variety in type A is a free module over the equivariant cohomology ring of a point. When equipped with Tymoczko's dot action, it becomes a twisted representation of the symmetric group, and the character of this representation is given by the chromatic quasisymmetric function of an indifference graph. In this note, we use divided difference operators to decompose this representation as a direct sum of sub-representations in a way that categorifies the modular relation between chromatic quasisymmetric functions.

Equivariant Chern character operators and Okounkov's conjecture
In this paper, we study the Chern character operators on the equivariant cohomology of the Hilbert schemes of points in the complex affine plane $C^2$ with the action of the torus $(C^*)^2$, and partially verify Okounkov's Conjecture [Oko, Conjecture 2] in this setting. Our main idea is to apply the connection between the equivariant cohomology of these Hilbert schemes and the ring of symmetric functions, via the deformed vertex operators of Cheng and Wang [CW], (the integral form of) the Jack symmetric functions and the transformed Macdonald symmetric functions of Garsia and Haiman [GH, Hai].

Log-concavity of polynomials arising from equivariant cohomology
We study the equivariant cohomology classes of torus-equivariant subvarieties of the space of matrices. For a large class of torus actions, we prove that the polynomials representing these classes (up to suitably changing signs) are covolume polynomials in the sense of Aluffi. We study the cohomology rings of complex varieties in terms of Macaulay inverse systems over $\mathbb{Z}$. As applications, we show that under certain conditions, the Macaulay dual generator is a denormalized Lorentzian polynomial in the sense of Brändén and Huh, and we give a characteristic-free extension (over $\mathbb{Z}$) of the result of Khovanskii and Pukhlikov describing the cohomology ring of toric varieties in terms of volume polynomials.

Generic pipe dreams, lower-upper varieties, and Schwartz-MacPherson classes
We recall the lower-upper varieties from [Knutson '05] and give a formula for their equivariant cohomology classes, as a sum over generic pipe dreams. We recover as limits the classic and bumpless pipe dream formulae for double Schubert polynomials. As a byproduct, we obtain a formula for the degree of the $n$th commuting variety as a sum of powers of 2. Generic pipe dreams also appear in the Segre-Schwarz-MacPherson analogue of the AJS/Billey formula, and when computing the Chern-Schwarz-MacPherson class of the orbit $B_- w B_+ \subseteq Mat_{k\times n}$ or of a double Bruhat cell $B_-u B_+ \cap B_+ v B_-$.

Equivariant geometry of symmetric quiver orbit closures
We unify problems about the equivariant geometry of symmetric quiver representation varieties, in the finite type setting, with the corresponding problems for symmetric varieties $GL(n)/K$ where $K$ is an orthogonal or symplectic group. In particular, we translate results about singularities of orbit closures; combinatorics of orbit closure containment; and torus equivariant cohomology and K-theory between these classes of varieties. We obtain these results by constructing explicit embeddings with nice properties of homogeneous fiber bundles over type $A$ symmetric quiver representation varieties into symmetric varieties.

Equivariant cohomology of Grassmannian spanning lines
Given integers $n \geq k \geq d$, let $X_{n,k,d}$ be the moduli space of $n$-tuples of lines $(\ell_1, \dots, \ell_n)$ in $\mathbb{C}^k$ such that $\ell_1 + \cdots + \ell_n$ has dimension $d$. We give a quotient presentation of the torus-equivariant cohomology of $X_{n,k,d}$. The form of this presentation, and in particular the torus parameters appearing therein, will arise from the orbit harmonics method of combinatorial deformation theory.

Hikita conjecture for classical Lie algebras
Let $G$ be $Sp_{2n}$, $SO_{2n}$ or $SO_{2n+1}$ and let $G^\vee$ be its Langlands dual group. Barbasch and Vogan based on earlier work of Lusztig and Spaltenstein, define a duality map $D$ that sends nilpotent orbits $\mathbb{O}_{e^\vee} \subset \mathfrak{g}^\vee$ to special nilpotent orbits $\mathbb{O}_e\subset \mathfrak{g}$. In a work by Losev, Mason-Brown and Matvieievskyi, an upgraded version $\tilde{D}$ of this duality is considered, called the refined BVLS duality. $\tilde{D}(\mathbb{O}_{e^\vee})$ is a $G$-equivariant cover $\tilde{\mathbb{O}}_e$ of $\mathbb{O}_e$. Let $S_{e^\vee}$ be the nilpotent Slodowy slice of the orbit $\mathbb{O}_{e^\vee}$. The two varieties $X^\vee= S_{e^\vee}$ and $X=$ Spec$(\mathbb{C}[\tilde{\mathbb{O}}_e])$ are expected to be symplectic dual to each other. In this context, a version of the Hikita conjecture predicts an isomorphism between the cohomology ring of the Springer fiber $\mathcal{B}_{e^\vee}$ and the ring of regular functions on the scheme-theoretic fixed point $X^T$ for some torus $T$. This paper verifies the isomorphism for certain pairs $e$ and $e^\vee$. These cases are expected to cover almost all instances in which the Hikita conjecture holds when $e^\vee$ regular in a Levi $\mathfrak{l}^\vee\subset \mathfrak{g}^\vee$. Our results in these cases follow from the relations of three different types of objects: generalized coinvariant algebras, equivariant cohomology rings, and functions on scheme-theoretic intersections. We also give evidence for the Hikita conjecture when $e^\vee$ is distinguished.

Splines on Cayley Graphs of the Symmetric Group
Published in Forum of Mathematics, Sigma 13 (2025) e96 • View PublicationBIB
A spline is an assignment of polynomials to the vertices of a graph whose edges are labeled by ideals, where the difference of two polynomials labeling adjacent vertices must belong to the corresponding ideal. The set of splines forms a ring. We consider spline rings where the underlying graph is the Cayley graph of a symmetric group generated by a collection of transpositions. These rings generalize the GKM construction for equivariant cohomology rings of flag, regular semisimple Hessenberg, and permutohedral varieties. These cohomology rings carry two actions of the symmetric group $S_n$ whose graded characters are both of general interest in algebraic combinatorics. In this paper, we generalize the graded $S_n$-representations from the cohomologies of the above varieties to splines on Cayley graphs of $S_n$, then (1) give explicit module and ring generators for whenever the $S_n$-generating set is minimal, (2) give a combinatorial characterization of when graded pieces of one $S_n$-representation is trivial, and (3) compute the first degree piece of both graded characters for all generating sets.

Existence and orthogonality of stable envelopes for bow varieties
Stable envelopes, introduced by Maulik and Okounkov, provide a family of bases for the equivariant cohomology of symplectic resolutions. The theory of stable envelopes provides a fascinating interplay between geometry, combinatorics and integrable systems. In this expository article, we give a self-contained introduction to cohomological stable envelopes of type A bow varieties (an interesting class of varieties extending Nakajima quiver varieties). Our main focus is on the existence and the orthogonality properties of stable envelopes for bow varieties. The restriction to this specific class of varieties allows us to illustrate the theory combinatorially and to provide simplified proofs, both laying a basis for explicit calculations.
Equivariant Tutte Polynomial
Published in Discrete Comput. Geom. (2025) • View PublicationBIB
We use the equivariant cohomology ring of the permutohedral variety to study matroids and their invariants. Investigating the pushforward of matroid Chern classes defined by A. Berget, C. Eur, H. Spink and D. Tseng to the product space $\mathbb{P}^n \times \mathbb{P}^n$, we establish an equivariant generalization of the Tutte polynomial of a matroid. This was suggested in a survey paper by M.Michałek. We discuss how this polynomial encodes properties of the matroid by looking at special evaluations. We further introduce an equivariant generalization of the reduced characteristic polynomial of a matroid.

Fibered toric varieties
A toric variety is called fibered if it can be represented as a total space of fibre bundle over toric base and with toric fiber. Fibered toric varieties form a special case of toric variety bundles. In this note we first give an introduction to the class of fibered toric varieties. Then we use them to illustrate some known and conjectural results on topology and intersection theory of general toric variety bundles. Finally, using the language of fibered toric varieties, we compute the equivariant cohomology rings of smooth complete toric varieties.

Integral equivariant cohomology of affine Grassmannians
Published in Can. Math. Bull. 67 (2024) 727-741 • View PublicationBIB
We give explicit presentations of the integral equivariant cohomology of the affine Grassmannians and flag varieties in type A, arising from their natural embeddings in the corresponding infinite (Sato) Grassmannian and flag variety. These presentations are compared with results obtained by Lam and Shimozono, for rational equivariant cohomology of the affine Grassmannian, and by Larson, for the integral cohomology of the moduli stack of vector bundles on $\mathbb{P}^1$.
