On Two Conjectures Related to the Boros-Moll Sequences
The Boros-Moll sequences $\{d_i(m)\}_{0\leq i\leq m}$ are defined as $$d_i(m)=2^{-2m}\sum_{k=i}^m 2^k \binom{2m-2k}{m-k}\binom{m+k}{k}\binom{k}{i}.$$ Consider the ratio sequence $$u_i(m)=\frac{d_{i-1}(m)d_{i+1}(m)}{d_i(m)^2}.$$ Chen and Gu conjectured that $\{u_i(m)\}_{2\leq i \leq m-2}$ is both reverse ultra log-concave and log-concave. In this paper, we prove the reverse ultra log-concavity conjecture using bounds of Chen-Gu and Zhao, and prove the log-concavity conjecture asymptotically by showing that $\{u_i(m)\}_{2\leq i \leq m-2}$ is strictly log-concave for all sufficiently large $m$. The key ingredient in the latter result is a recurrence of Kauers and Paule, which we interpret as a nonlinear discrete dynamical system through a backward map. We construct an approximation to the ratio sequence using its stable limiting fixed point and combine localization and contraction arguments with finite-difference estimates and separate interior and edge analyses to obtain the desired strict log-concavity.

Unimodality shenanigans in Ehrhart theory
We show the existence of counterexamples to a four-decade-old conjecture attributed to Stanley concerning the unimodality of $h^*$-polynomials of IDP polytopes. As additional applications of our main constructions, we also disprove a conjecture by Brenti on the log-concavity of $h^*$-polynomials of Gorenstein IDP polytopes, and a conjecture by Ferroni and Higashitani concerning the log-concavity of the Ehrhart series of IDP polytopes. We also answer their question about the existence of very ample polytopes with non-log-concave interior Ehrhart series. Our class of examples arises by taking Cayley sums of rectangular prisms, and hence they possess regular unimodular flag triangulations by a result of Haase, Paffenholz, Piechnik and Santos. For the unimodality conjecture, we can even find smooth counterexamples.

Log-concavity and unimodality of Hodge numbers of Hilbert schemes of points over a surface
Let \(S\) be a smooth projective complex surface with irregularity \(q=h^{1,0}(S)\) and geometric genus \(g=h^{2,0}(S)\), and let \(S^{[n]}\) denote its Hilbert scheme of \(n\) points. We prove that, for every \(n\ge0\), the sequence \[ \left(h^{p,0}\bigl(S^{[n]}\bigr)\right)_{p=0}^{2n} \] is log-concave if and only if \(g\le\binom{q+1}{2}\). Moreover, log-concavity of all these sequences is already equivalent to log-concavity of the sequence for \(n=2\). We also prove that these sequences are unimodal for every \(n\ge0\) if and only if \(q\ge1\) or \(g=0\), and that this condition is already detected by the sequence for \(n=1\).

An Alexander Polynomial Refinement for Alternating Links, with Trapezoidal Properties
We define an invariant of alternating links---a homogeneous, four-variable Laurent polynomial---that encodes the symmetrized Alexander polynomial, the signature, and other topological data. Along the way, we extend a spanning tree formulation of the Alexander polynomial due to Murasugi and Stoimenow from special alternating links to all alternating links. This project is motivated by Fox's trapezoidal conjecture; accordingly, we prove certain sequences associated to our invariant are trapezoidal for all alternating links. We also conjecture our polynomial has $M$-convex support, and that it satisfies symmetry and log-concavity properties. We prove a partial symmetry result.

A note on the ultra log-concavity of matroid intersection
In 1971, Mason conjectured that the numbers of independent sets of fixed size in a matroid constitute an ultra log-concave sequence. In 2020, this conjecture was proven by Brändén and Huh and independently by Anari, Liu, Gharan and Vinzant. Recently, this result was extended to $M^\natural$-concave functions. In this note, we make the next step by proving it for $M_2^\natural$-concave functions. This shows the same property for the intersection of any pair of matroids (which itself may not be a matroid). Furthermore, we show that this can not be further extended to the intersections of three matroids by including a counterexample of partition matroids.

Log-concavity of subsequence counts of words
Given a word over a finite alphabet, consider the sequence that counts, for each length, the number of distinct subsequences of that length. In 1976, Chase proved that this sequence is log-concave. His proof uses a triangular array indexed by the prefixes of the word together with a meticulous analysis of ratios of several sums. We instead decompose according to the first letter, which reduces the proof to a weighted average.

Pfaffian--Toeplitz identities, Schur positivity, and the $q$-log-convexity of Baxter polynomials
We use the Pfaffian minor summation formula together with Jacobi--Trudi Toeplitz matrices to derive Pfaffian expansions in skew Schur functions. This yields explicit Schur expansions for several generating functions involving products of skew Schur functions. In particular, using sparse skew-symmetric matrices, we provide a Pfaffian proof of a Schur-positive identity arising in the study of the $q$-log-convexity of the Narayana polynomials. As the main application, we prove that the Baxter polynomials form a $q$-log-convex sequence. We further show that the Baxter transformation defined by the refined Baxter numbers preserves log-convexity. Finally, by realizing the $q$-refined Baxter numbers as principal specializations of rectangular Schur functions, we prove that the array of $q$-refined Baxter numbers is $q$-log-concave both along each row and along each column. Both $q$-log-concavity results extend naturally to the $q$-analogues of the $d$-Hoggatt numbers.

The radial derivative on the graded Möbius algebra
Let $M$ be a simple matroid and let $B(M)$ be the graded Möbius algebra of its lattice of flats. The ordered-basis weights of flats define an inner product for which the adjoints of atom multiplication become ordinary coordinate derivatives under the basis-polynomial realization. From this, we construct a canonical global lowering operator $D_β$ which acts as ordinary differentiation on a canonical ``radial'' copy of a truncated polynomial algebra. Allowing both $D_β$ and the coordinate derivatives to act produces a graded cyclic module with Hilbert series \[ H_{β,M}(q)=\sum_{k=0}^r h_k^β(M)q^k. \] We give examples of matroids with the same Derksen $\mathcal G$-invariant and the same classical apolar Hilbert series but different $H_β$. Hence $H_β$ cannot be the restriction to simple matroids of a valuative matroid invariant. We conjecture that $H_β$ is log-concave and top-heavy in differential degree. For the generalized theta family containing Larson's counterexample to Whitney log-concavity, we compute the first four coefficients and prove the critical log-concavity inequality. Exact computation verifies both conjectures for all $950$ simple matroids on eight elements.

Skew Hives, Skew Skeps, Skew Schur Log-Concavity
Knutson and Tao's hives is a combinatorial model to compute Littlewood--Richardson coefficients. Similar to hives, Speyer introduced skeps and used them to prove a Schur log-concavity conjecture by Lam--Postnikov--Pylyavskyy. We first introduce skew hive and skew skep models, which specialize to both hives and skeps, and use this to prove a skew Schur log-concavity result generalizing Lam--Postnikov--Pylyavskyy conjecture. As a consequence, we obtain some log-concavity results concerning Newell--Littlewood numbers and shadow skew Schur functions. Finally, we explain bijections between (skew) hives, (skew) skeps, and peelable tableaux by Nguyen--Nguyen--Woodruff, answering Speyer's question.

Normalized skew Schur polynomials are Lorentzian
We prove the conjecture of Huh, Matherne, Mészáros, and St.~Dizier that the normalization of every skew Schur polynomial in finitely many variables is Lorentzian. We first realize every nonzero skew Schur polynomial in finitely many variables as a specialization of a Schubert polynomial and prove that it is dually Lorentzian. The dual Jacobi--Trudi identity then identifies its normalization with the finite dual of a skew Schur polynomial obtained by rectangular complementation. As a consequence, skew Kostka numbers satisfy log-concavity inequalities along the root directions.

Richardson volume models for skew Schur and skew Schur $P/Q$-functions
We identify ordinary skew Schur polynomials and skew Schur $P$-functions as top-degree total-Chern intersection polynomials on Richardson varieties in ordinary and Lagrangian Grassmannians. We then obtain that $\mathcal N(s_{λ/μ})$, $\mathcal N(P_{λ/μ})$, $\mathcal N(Q_{λ/μ})$ are realizable volume polynomials. This settles the skew-Schur and Schur-$P$ Lorentzian conjectures of Huh--Matherne--Mészáros--St.~Dizier and strengthens the latter to arbitrary skew $P/Q$-functions. The construction extends to cycle transforms attached to arbitrary irreducible subvarieties of ordinary and Lagrangian Grassmannians. We obtain reverse Khovanskii--Teissier inequalities for ordinary and shifted tableau multiplicities, Hessian-signature and principal-minor inequalities, root-direction log-concavity, and dominance monotonicity of coefficients toward balanced contents. We also prove ultra-log-concavity of weighted block aggregates and a diagonal covariance bound for factorially tilted content distributions. We determine the exact skew-Schur support permutahedron and its extremal coefficients, recover the known straight Schur-$P/Q$ support polytopes and identify their vertex coefficients in the present framework, and prove log-concavity for cumulative two-row ordinary Littlewood--Richardson coefficients and for weighted cumulative two-row shifted Littlewood--Richardson coefficients.
Weighted bond posets and a new chromatic symmetric function
The classical bond lattice of a graph was used in a formula of Whitney to compute the chromatic polynomial. In this paper, we use weighted versions of the bond lattice, to introduce and study a new polynomial and a new symmetric function invariant of a graph. Examples of the new polynomial invariant include the classical Narayana polynomials (for the path graph), the tree-Eulerian polynomials (for the complete graph), and the binomial-Eulerian polynomials (for the star graph). These examples suggest an interesting connection to $h$-polynomials of general graph-associahedra. We prove that for any chordal graph, our polynomial graph invariant is $γ$-positive. Multiweighted bond posets yield a symmetric function graph invariant that is an analog of the chromatic polynomial. The highest degree homogeneous component of this symmetric function is of particular interest. The parking function symmetric function introduced by Haiman arises as an example, as do symmetric functions studied by the first author in connection with multibracketed Lie algebras and with colored exterior algebras. The $γ$-positivity result mentioned above is a specialization of an $e$-positivity result for the highest degree homogeneous component, which we prove for any chordal graph using the theory of lexicographic shellability. We conjecture that this symmetric function is Schur-log-concave, which specializes to Huh's log-concavity theorem for the chromatic polynomial.
Matroid flat counts can have many peaks
We disprove Rota's conjecture that the counts of flats in a matroid according to rank form a unimodal sequence. Furthermore, we show that this sequence can have arbitrarily many peaks. The construction starts by finding a generalized theta graph for which log-concavity fails severely. By taking direct sums, we break log-concavity in many places. We then use Whittle's $q$-lift construction to produce a matroid whose flat counts have many peaks.

On the Asymptotic Normality and Unimodality of Genus Distributions of Wheels
The genus polynomial of a graph is the generating polynomial for the number of nonequivalent embeddings of the graph on each orientable surface. In this paper, we address three questions on genus polynomials for wheel graphs: the computation of genus polynomials, the unimodality and the asymptotic normality of their coefficients. We derive an explicit formula for the genus polynomial of wheel graphs by combining methods of the joint tree model and characters theory, and then prove its real-rootedness. This stronger result implies the log-concavity, unimodality, and asymptotic normality of its coefficients. Thus, we confirm the unimodality conjecture for the genus distribution of wheel graphs and provide a positive answer to the asymptotic normality question posed by Zhang, Peng, and Chen (\emph{Adv. in Appl. Math.} \textbf{127} (2021), 102175).

Lattice polytopes of large width have real-rooted Ehrhart $h^*$-polynomials
In this note we prove that in fixed dimension the Ehrhart $h^*$-polynomial of a lattice polytope of sufficiently large lattice width is real-rooted. In particular, this implies strict log-concavity and unimodality of the $h^*$-vector and answers a question of Averkov, Hofscheier and the author. For a lattice simplex we prove the analogous statement for its local $h^*$-polynomial, also called box polynomial. The proofs were found using ChatGPT 5.6 Sol and follow essentially directly from a result by Basu and Oertel that for large enough lattice width counting lattice points approximates the volume.

Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of matroids need not be unimodal
We construct, over every finite field, representable matroids whose Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials are not unimodal. In particular, the conjectures that all Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of matroids are log-concave and that they are real-rooted are both false. Our examples are obtained by deleting points from finite projective geometries. More generally, we prove that, under a half-rank degree condition in each contraction quotient, the Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomial of every contraction enumerates the subspaces whose projective points lie in the corresponding deleted set, while the $Z$-polynomial agrees with that of the full projective geometry.

Matroid flat counts are not unimodal
We give counterexamples to Rota's 1970 conjecture that the sequence counting flats of varying rank in a matroid is unimodal. More specifically, inspired by Larson's recent disproof of the stronger log-concavity conjecture of Mason, we explain a mechanism which turns failures of log-concavity for flats into failures of unimodality under suitable conditions.

A 13-vertex counterexample to $e$-log-concavity for chromatic quasisymmetric functions
We exhibit a connected natural unit interval graph on $13$ vertices whose chromatic quasisymmetric function has an elementary-basis coefficient that is positive, palindromic, and unimodal, but not log-concave. For the Hessenberg function $h=(2,4,4,6,7,10,10,10,10,12,12,13,13)$ and $λ=(6,5,1,1)$, the coefficients of $q^5,q^6,q^7$ in $[e_λ]X_{G(h)}(\mathbf{x};q)$ are $1,6,38$; hence $6^2<1\cdot38$. This disproves Conjecture 5.3 of Abreu--Nigro and its later formulations by Tom and by Sagan--Tom. The calculation is certified by a standalone deterministic verifier using exact integer and rational arithmetic.

Log-Concavity of Conic Intrinsic Volumes
Let $n\ge1$ and $C\subseteq\mathbb{R}^n$ be a closed convex cone with conic intrinsic volumes $v_0(C),\ldots,v_n(C)$. We prove the long-standing log-concavity conjecture for this sequence, in the stronger form \[ v_k(C)^2\ge ρ_kρ_{n-k}v_{k-1}(C)v_{k+1}(C), \qquad 1\le k\le n-1, \] where, for $l\ge1$, $ρ_l=\frac{l+1}{l}\frac{ω_{l-1}ω_{l+1}}{ω_l^2}>1$ and $ω_j$ is the volume of the Euclidean unit ball in $\mathbb{R}^j$. The proof applies the Alexandrov--Fenchel inequality to the Takemura--Kuriki identity \[ V(A[k],D[n-k])=\frac{ω_kω_{n-k}}{\binom nk}v_k(C),\qquad A=C\cap B^n,\quad D=C^\circ\cap B^n, \] where $C^\circ$ is the polar cone, $B^n$ is the Euclidean unit ball, and repeated arguments are indicated by brackets. A Master Steiner argument gives the identity directly for arbitrary closed convex cones, including degenerate ones. We also give a circular-cone counterexample to the standard ultra-log-concavity normalizations.
On card guessing after an asymmetric single-shelf shuffle
We provide a definitive analysis of the number of correct guesses in the complete-feedback card guessing game after an asymmetric single-shelf shuffle with parameter $p\in (0, 1)$. We explicitly describe the optimal strategy that maximizes the expected number of correct guesses. We study the number of correct guesses, under an optimal strategy, using methods from analytic combinatorics. In addition, we find the explicit distribution for the number of correct guesses, and thus find the mean and the variance for the number of correct guesses. We show that the distribution of the number of correct guesses is log-concave. We also study the limiting behaviour of the number of correct guesses as the number of cards goes to infinity. In particular, we prove a (local) central limit theorem and a large deviation principle with an explicit rate function. We also prove phase transitions for the number of correct guesses near $p=0$ and $p=1$. Prior to this work, only the optimal strategy and the expected number of correct guesses under the optimal strategy were known for the special case of $p=1/2$.
