A new characterization of right keys, and the $m$-symmetric Schur functions at $t=0$
The ring $R_m$ of $m$-symmetric functions consists of the formal power series that are symmetric in the variables $x_{m+1},x_{m+2},\dots$ but carry no symmetry in the first $m$ variables. We develop a combinatorial theory for the specialization at $t=0$ of the Schur functions of $R_m$. Our main tool is a new characterization of right key tableaux as suprema of the sets of decreasing subwords of the reading words of the subtableaux of $T$. Being invariant under elementary Knuth transformations, this characterization is compatible with the RSK correspondence. We obtain in this way a generating function over semistandard tableaux for the $m$-symmetric Schur functions at $t=0$, together with a combinatorial proof of a Cauchy identity in $R_m$. The $m$-symmetric Schur functions and their dual are then respectively identified with Demazure atoms and Demazure characters. Restricted to the last $m$ variables, our correspondence specializes to a proof, by ordinary RSK, of Lascoux's nonsymmetric Cauchy identity for Demazure characters and atoms. As further applications, we relate the $m$-symmetric Schur functions at $t=0$ to the almost symmetric Schur functions through a unitriangular change-of-basis matrix, obtain tableau generating functions and Cauchy identities for both families, and derive Jacobi-Trudi type determinantal formulas for three different bases.

On the Betti numbers, Poincaré polynomials, and Euler characteristics of $\overline{\mathcal M}_{0,n}$
In this paper, we revisit the Poincaré polynomials, Betti numbers, and Euler characteristics of the Deligne-Mumford moduli spaces $\overline{\mathcal M}_{0,n}$ of stable $n$-pointed rational curves. We give elementary derivations of two recent closed formulas for their Poincaré polynomials, due respectively to Aluffi-Marcolli-Nascimento (arXiv:2406.13095) and to Eur-Ferroni-Matherne-Pagaria-Vecchi (arXiv:2504.16776). Our approach shows that both formulas are already implicit in the generating-series results of Getzler and Manin, and can be extracted from them by elementary manipulations of generating functions, the binomial series, and standard identities for Stirling numbers. Beyond these new derivations, the same method also yields new linear recurrence relations for refined invariants associated with these Poincaré polynomials, namely distinguished summands and a bivariate refinement. As a further consequence, we obtain two additional formulas for the Betti numbers, not previously recorded in this form. We also study the Euler characteristics $χ(\overline{\mathcal M}_{0,n})$. Using the Taylor expansion of a suitable branch of the Lambert $W$-function, we show that their sequence is obtained by evaluating complete Bell polynomials at an explicit auxiliary integer sequence. This Bell-polynomial representation yields Hessenberg determinantal formulas and a new linear recursion, distinct from the well-known quadratic Keel-Manin recursion. It also provides an explicit extraction of the Euler characteristics from the Lambert $W$-function expression considered by Aluffi-Marcolli-Nascimento. Finally, we refine the Manin-Zagier asymptotic estimate for these Euler characteristics by computing the full asymptotic expansion.

Temperley-Lieb Immanants of Ribbon Decomposition Matrices
Ribbon decomposition matrices give determinantal formulas for skew Schur functions that include as special cases the classical Jacobi-Trudi, Giambelli, and Lascoux-Pragacz formulas. We prove that certain elements of Lusztig's dual canonical basis, called Temperley-Lieb immanants, are Schur-positive when evaluated on ribbon decomposition matrices. We conjecture that this positivity holds for all elements of the dual canonical basis. This is known in the special case of Jacobi-Trudi matrices by a result of Haiman.
Neutral-Fermion constructions of factorial $gp$-and $gq$-Functions
We develop neutral-fermionic constructions for the factorial $gp$- and $gq$-functions introduced by Nakagawa and Naruse, which are respectively dual to the factorial $GQ$- and $GP$-functions of Ikeda and Naruse. In particular, we realize the factorial $GP$-, $GQ$- and $gq$-functions as vacuum expectation values. As applications, we obtain, Jacobi--Trudi type determinantal formulas for the transition coefficients between functions with different equivariant parameters for $gq$ and its dual $GP$, as well as a Pfaffian formula for the factorial $gq$-functions. We further prove a remarkable coincidence among the transition coefficients for parameter changes for $gp$, $gq$, $GQ$, and $GP$. These coefficients admit a description in terms of factorial Grothendieck polynomials of type A.

Determinant and Pfaffian formulas for particle annihilation
When particles on a line collide, they may annihilate-both are destroyed. Computing exact annihilation probabilities has been difficult because collisions reduce the particle count, while determinantal methods require a fixed count throughout. The ghost particle method, introduced in a companion paper for coalescence, keeps destroyed particles walking as invisible ghosts that restore the missing dimension. We apply this method to annihilation: when two particles annihilate, both trajectories continue as invisible walkers, yielding an exact determinantal formula that specifies the number of annihilations, where survivors end up, and where ghosts end up. For complete annihilation (no survivors), the formula simplifies to a Pfaffian-an algebraic relative of the determinant built from pairwise quantities-connecting to Pfaffian point process theory. The annihilation formula also yields results about coalescence: pairwise coalescence can be reinterpreted as complete annihilation, producing a Pfaffian coalescence formula. These formulas are exact for any finite initial configuration and apply to discrete lattice paths, birth-death chains, and continuous diffusions including Brownian motion.

Exact determinant formulas for coalescing particle systems
When particles on a line collide, they may coalesce into one. Such systems model diverse phenomena, from voter dynamics and opinion formation to ancestral lineages in population genetics. Computing exact coalescence probabilities has been difficult because collisions reduce the particle count, while classical determinantal methods require a fixed count throughout. We introduce ghost particles: when two particles merge, the discarded trajectory continues as an invisible walker. Ghosts restore the missing dimension, enabling an exact determinantal formula. We prove that the probability of any specified coalescence pattern is given by a determinant. Integrating out ghost positions yields a closed-form ghost-free formula for the surviving particles. The framework applies to discrete lattice paths, birth-death chains, and continuous diffusions including Brownian motion.

On enumeration of spanning trees of complete multipartite graphs containing a fixed spanning forest
We present a determinantal formula for the number of spanning trees of a complete multipartite graph containing a given spanning forest $F$. Our approach relies on the Generalized Matrix Determinant Lemma and Jacobi's formula for the derivative of a determinant. This work generalizes known results for complete bipartite graphs and offers an algebraic perspective on the problem.

Yet another doubly refined enumeration of Alternating Sign Matrices
Since the alternating sign matrix conjecture, proposed by Mills, Robbins, and Rumsey in 1982, was proved by Zeilberger and Kuperberg, several refined enumerations have been considered. In particular, Behrend et al. obtained a quadruply refined enumeration by adding certain parameters. In this paper, we revisit the doubly refined enumeration of alternating sign matrices by adding three parameters: the number of $-1$'s, the position of the $1$ in the first row, and the position of the $1$ in the last row. Using Lascoux's formula on symmetry functions, we derive a new determinantal formula for this doubly refined enumeration. Besides the enumeration conjecture, Mills et al. also proposed a decomposition conjecture, which was subsequently proven by Kuperberg. We present a refinement of that decomposition conjecture.

Flagged Hamel--Goulden formulas
We obtain Hamel--Goulden-type ribbon decomposition determinantal formulas for flagged supersymmetric Schur functions. As an application, we derive corresponding new determinantal formulas dual refined canonical stable Grothendieck polynomials. These results generalize and produce a number of new determinantal formulas for these symmetric functions including Jacobi--Trudi and skew Giambelli-type determinants.

Uniform treatments of Bernoulli numbers, Stirling numbers, and their generating functions
In this paper, by virtue of a determinantal formula for derivatives of the ratio between two differentiable functions, in view of the Faà di Bruno formula, and with the help of several identities and closed-form formulas for the partial Bell polynomials $\operatorname{B}_{n,k}$, the author establishes thirteen Maclaurin series expansions of the functions \begin{align*} &\ln\frac{\operatorname{e}^x+1}{2}, && \ln\frac{\operatorname{e}^x-1}{x}, && \ln\cosh x, \\ &\ln\frac{\sinh x}{x}, && \biggl[\frac{\ln(1+x)}{x}\biggr]^r, && \biggl(\frac{\operatorname{e}^x-1}{x}\biggr)^r \end{align*} for $r=\pm\frac{1}{2}$ and $r\in\mathbb{R}$ in terms of the Dirichlet eta function $η(1-2k)$, the Riemann zeta function $ζ(1-2k)$, and the Stirling numbers of the first and second kinds $s(n,k)$ and $S(n,k)$. presents four determinantal expressions and three recursive relations for the Bernoulli numbers $B_{2n}$. finds out three closed-form formulas for the Bernoulli numbers $B_{2n}$ and the generalized Bernoulli numbers $B_n^{(r)}$ in terms of the Stirling numbers of the second kind $S(n,k)$, and deduce two combinatorial identities for the Stirling numbers of the second kind $S(n,k)$. acquires two combinatorial identities, which can be regarded as diagonal recursive relations, involving the Stirling numbers of the first and second kinds $s(n,k)$ and $S(n,k)$. recovers an integral representation and a closed-form formula, and establish an alternative explicit and closed-form formula, for the Bernoulli numbers of the second kind $b_n$ in terms of the Stirling numbers of the first kind $s(n,k)$. obtains three identities connecting the Stirling numbers of the first and second kinds $s(n,k)$ and $S(n,k)$.

$q$-deformation of random partitions, determinantal structure, and Riemann-Hilbert problem
Published in Math. Phys. Anal. Geom. 28 (2025) 38 • View PublicationBIB
We study $q$-deformation of probability measures on partitions, i.e., $q$-deformed random partitions. We in particular consider the $q$-Plancherel measure and show a determinantal formula for the correlation function using a $q$-deformation of the discrete Bessel kernel. We also investigate Riemann-Hilbert problems associated with the corresponding orthogonal polynomials and obtain $q$-Painlevé equations from the $q$-difference Lax formalism.

Determinantal representations of alternating run polynomials
Based on a determinantal formula for the higher derivative of a quotient of two functions, we first present the determinantal expressions of Eulerian polynomials and Andre polynomials. In particular, we discover that the Euler number (number of alternating permutations) can be expressed as a lower Hessenberg determinant. We then investigate the determinantal representations of the up-down run polynomials and the types A and B alternating run polynomials. As applications, we deduce several new recurrence relations, which imply the multiplicity of -1 in these three kinds of polynomials. And then, we provide two determinantal representations for the alternating run polynomials of dual Stirling permutations. In particular, we discover a close connection between the alternating run polynomials of dual Stirling permutations and the type B Eulerian polynomials.

Markov chains on trees: almost lower and upper directed cases
The transition matrix of a Markov chain $(X_k,k\geq 0)$ on a finite or infinite rooted tree is said to be almost upper-directed if, given $X_k$, the node $X_{k+1}$ is either a descendant of $X_k$ or the parent of $X_k$. It is said to be almost lower-directed if given $X_k$, $X_{k+1}$ is either an ancestor of $X_k$ or a child of $X_k$. These models include nearest neighbor Markov chains on trees. Under an irreducibility assumption, we show that every almost upper-directed transition matrix on infinite (locally finite) trees has some invariant measures. An invariant measure $π$ is expressed thanks to a determinantal formula. We give general explicit criteria for recurrence and positive recurrence. An efficient algorithm (the leaf addition algorithm) of independent interest allows $π$ to be computed on many trees, without resorting to linear algebra considerations. Flajolet, in a series of papers, provided some relations between continuous fractions, generating functions of weighted Mötzkin paths, and used them in connection with the analysis of birth and death processes. These fruitful representations made it possible to establish many formulae for continuous fractions. Analogous considerations appear here: this type of study can be extended to weighted paths on trees, whose generating functions can also be expressed, this time in terms of multicontinuous fractions.

Action of free fermions on Symmetric Functions
The Clifford algebra of the endomorphisms of the exterior algebra of a countably dimensional vector space induces natural bosonic shadows, i.e. families of linear maps between the cohomologies of complex grassmannians. The main result of this paper is to provide a determinantal formula expressing generating functions of such endomorphisms unifying several classical special cases. For example the action over a point recovers the Jacobi-Trudy formula in the theory of symmetric functions or the Giambelli's one in classical Schubert calculus, whereas the action of degree preserving endomorphisms take into account the finite type version of the Date-Jimbo-Kashiwara-Miwa bosonic vertex operator representation of the Lie algebra $gl(\infty)$. The fermionic actions on (finite type) bosonic spaces is described in terms of the classical theory of symmetric functions. The main guiding principle is the fact that the exterior algebra is a (non irreducible) representation of the ring of symmetric functions, which is the way we use to spell the ``finite type'' Boson-Fermion correspondence.

A determinantal formula for cluster variables in cluster algebras from surfaces
For cluster algebras of surface type, Musiker, Schiffler and Williams gave a formula for cluster variables in terms of perfect matchings of snake graphs. Building on this, we provide a simple determinantal formula for cluster variables via the weighted biadjacency matrix of the associated snake graphs, thus circumventing the enumeration of their perfect matchings.

A determinantal formula for orthosymplectic Schur functions
We prove a new determinantal formula for the characters of irreducible representations of orthosymplectic Lie superalgebras analogous to the formula developed by Moens and Jeugt (J. Algebraic Combin., 2003) for general linear Lie superalgebras. Our proof uses the Jacobi--Trudi type formulas for orthosymplectic characters. As a consequence, we show that the odd symplectic characters introduced by Proctor (Invent. Math., 1988) are the same as the orthosymplectic characters with some specialized indeterminates. We also give a generalization of an odd symplectic character identity due to Brent, Krattenthaler and Warnaar (J. Combin. Theory Ser. A, 2016).

External columns and chambers of vector partition functions
The vector partition function $p_A$ associated to a $d \times n$ matrix $A$ with integer entries is the function $\mathbb{Z}^d \to \mathbb{N}$ defined by $\mathbf{b} \to \#\{\mathbf{x} \in \mathbb{N}^n : A\mathbf{x} = \mathbf{b}\}$. It is known that vector partition functions are piecewise quasi-polynomials whose domains of quasi-polynomiality are maximal cones (chambers) of a fan called the chamber complex of $A$. In this article we introduce \emph{external columns} and \emph{external chambers} of vector partition functions. Our main result is that (up to a saturation condition) the quasi-polynomial associated to a chamber containing external columns arises from a vector partition function with $k$ fewer equations and variables. In the case that the chamber is external -- that is, when the number of external columns in a chamber is as large as possible without being trivial -- the quasi-polynomial arises from a coin exchange problem. By exploiting this we are able to obtain a determinantal formula, characterize when the quasi-polynomial is polynomial, and show that in this case it is actually given by a negative binomial coefficient. We then apply these results to the enumeration of loopless multigraphs satisfying some degree conditions. Finally, we suggest a generalization to a result of Baldoni and Vergne for polynomials arising from chambers that we call \emph{semi-external chambers}.

Characters of classical groups, Schur-type functions, and discrete splines
Published in Sbornik: Mathematics 214:11 (2023), 1585-1626 • View PublicationBIB
We study a spectral problem related to the finite-dimensional characters of the groups $Sp(2N)$, $SO(2N+1)$, and $SO(2N)$, which form the classical series $C$, $B$, and $D$, respectively. The irreducible characters of these three series are given by $N$-variate symmetric polynomials. The spectral problem in question consists in the decomposition of the characters after their restriction to the subgroups of the same type but smaller rank $K<N$. The main result of the paper is the derivation of explicit determinantal formulas for the coefficients in this decomposition. In fact, we first compute these coefficients in a greater generality -- for the multivariate symmetric Jacobi polynomials depending on two continuous parameters. Next, we show that the formulas can be drastically simplified for the three special cases of Jacobi polynomials corresponding to the $C$-$B$-$D$ characters. In particular, we show that then the coefficients are given by piecewise polynomial functions. This is where a link with discrete splines arises. In type $A$ (that is, for the characters of the unitary groups $U(N)$), similar results were earlier obtained by Alexei Borodin and the author [Adv. Math., 2012], and then reproved by another method by Leonid Petrov [Moscow Math. J., 2014]. The case of the symplectic and orthogonal characters is more intricate.
Yay for Determinants!

In this {\it case study}, we hope to show why Sheldon Axler was not just wrong, but {\em wrong}, when he urged, in 1995: ``Down with Determinants!''. We first recall how determinants are useful in enumerative combinatorics, and then illustrate three versatile tools (Dodgson's condensation, the holonomic ansatz and constant term evaluations) to operate in tandem to prove a certain intriguing determinantal formula conjectured by the first author. We conclude with a postscript describing yet another, much more efficient, method for evaluating determinants: `ask determinant-guru, Christian Krattenthaler', but advise people only to use it as a last resort, since if we would have used this last method right away, we would not have had the fun of doing it all by ourselves.

Pearcey universality at cusps of polygonal lozenge tiling
Published in Comm. Pure Appl. Math. 77 (9), 3708-3784 (September 2024) • View PublicationBIB
We study uniformly random lozenge tilings of general simply connected polygons. Under a technical assumption that is presumably generic with respect to polygon shapes, we show that the local statistics around a cusp point of the arctic curve converge to the Pearcey process. This verifies the widely predicted universality of edge statistics in the cusp case. Together with the smooth and tangent cases proved in Aggarwal-Huang and Aggarwal-Gorin, these are believed to be the three types of edge statistics that can arise in a generic polygon. Our proof is via a local coupling of the random tiling with non-intersecting Bernoulli random walks (NBRW). To leverage this coupling, we establish an optimal concentration estimate for the tiling height function around the cusp. As another step and also a result of potential independent interest, we show that the local statistics of NBRW around a cusp converge to the Pearcey process when the initial configuration consists of two parts with proper density growth, via careful asymptotic analysis of the determinantal formula.
