Combinatorial identities derived from explicit formulas of Gauss hypergeometric functions
In present paper, with the help of the Faà di Bruno formula and identities of partial Bell polynomials, the author establishes explicit formulas of the Gauss hypergeometric functions \begin{gather*} {\,}_2F_1\biggl(\frac{1-n}{2},\frac{2-n}{2};\frac{3}{2}-m;z^2\biggr), \quad {\,}_2F_1\biggl(-\frac{n}{2},\frac{1-n}{2};\frac{1}{2}-m;z^2\biggr),\\ {\,}_2F_1\biggl(a,a+\frac{1}{2};\frac{3}{2}-m;z^2\biggr), \quad {\,}_2F_1\biggl(a,a+\frac{1}{2};\frac{1}{2}-m;z^2\biggr) \end{gather*} for $m,n\in\mathbb{N}$ and $a\in\mathbb{C}$, and then derives two combinatorial identities \begin{equation*} \sum_{k=0}^{m}\frac{2^k}{k!} \binom{2m-2k}{m-k} \sum_{\ell=0}^{k} \frac{(-1)^\ell}{2^\ell} \frac{(2k-2\ell-1)!!}{(n-\ell)!} \binom{2k-\ell-1}{\ell-1} =\frac{1}{n!}\binom{2m-n}{m} \end{equation*} and \begin{equation*} \sum_{k=1}^{m}\frac{1}{(k!)^2}\binom{2m-2k}{m-k} \sum_{\ell=1}^{k} \binom{k}{\ell}\ell(2k-\ell-1)! (2a)_\ell =\binom{2m+2a}{m}, \end{equation*} where $m\in\mathbb{N}_0$, $n\in\mathbb{Z}$, and $a\in\mathbb{C}$. These newly-established identities generalize the nice and beautiful combinatorial identity \begin{equation*} \sum_{k=0}^{n} \frac{2^{k}}{k!}\binom{2n-2k}{n-k} \sum_{j=0}^{k}\frac{(-1)^{j}}{2^j} \frac{(2k-2j-1)!!}{(n-j)!} \binom{2k-j-1}{j-1} =\frac{1}{n!}, \quad n\in\mathbb{N}_0, \end{equation*} which was obtained in Theorem 4 of the recent paper "F. Qi, C.-Y. He, and D. Lim, Explicit formulas of two Gauss hypergeometric functions and several combinatorial identities, Discrete Appl. Math., Vol. 393 (2026), 215--229. A Snail Race Problem
Inspired by Problem 17 from the 2024 American Mathematics Competition (AMC) 10B, this work focuses on enumerating the distinct outcomes of a snail race with specified number of ties of a certain type. We begin by developing a recurrence relation and subsequently derive a closed-form formula for the number of possible outcomes using the exponential generating function method. Two special cases of the problem are considered in detail. Our analysis also explores the connections between the solution to this problem and the ordered Bell numbers, Stirling numbers of the second kind, and partial Bell polynomials.
Uniform treatments of Bernoulli numbers, Stirling numbers, and their generating functions
In this paper, by virtue of a determinantal formula for derivatives of the ratio between two differentiable functions, in view of the Faà di Bruno formula, and with the help of several identities and closed-form formulas for the partial Bell polynomials $\operatorname{B}_{n,k}$, the author establishes thirteen Maclaurin series expansions of the functions \begin{align*} &\ln\frac{\operatorname{e}^x+1}{2}, && \ln\frac{\operatorname{e}^x-1}{x}, && \ln\cosh x, \\ &\ln\frac{\sinh x}{x}, && \biggl[\frac{\ln(1+x)}{x}\biggr]^r, && \biggl(\frac{\operatorname{e}^x-1}{x}\biggr)^r \end{align*} for $r=\pm\frac{1}{2}$ and $r\in\mathbb{R}$ in terms of the Dirichlet eta function $η(1-2k)$, the Riemann zeta function $ζ(1-2k)$, and the Stirling numbers of the first and second kinds $s(n,k)$ and $S(n,k)$. presents four determinantal expressions and three recursive relations for the Bernoulli numbers $B_{2n}$. finds out three closed-form formulas for the Bernoulli numbers $B_{2n}$ and the generalized Bernoulli numbers $B_n^{(r)}$ in terms of the Stirling numbers of the second kind $S(n,k)$, and deduce two combinatorial identities for the Stirling numbers of the second kind $S(n,k)$. acquires two combinatorial identities, which can be regarded as diagonal recursive relations, involving the Stirling numbers of the first and second kinds $s(n,k)$ and $S(n,k)$. recovers an integral representation and a closed-form formula, and establish an alternative explicit and closed-form formula, for the Bernoulli numbers of the second kind $b_n$ in terms of the Stirling numbers of the first kind $s(n,k)$. obtains three identities connecting the Stirling numbers of the first and second kinds $s(n,k)$ and $S(n,k)$.

In the paper, by virtue of the famous formula of Faà di Bruno, with the aid of several identities of partial Bell polynomials, by means of a formula for derivatives of the ratio of two differentiable functions, and with availability of other techniques, the authors establish closed-form formulas in terms of the Bernoulli numbers and the second kind Stirling numbers, present determinantal expressions, derive recursive relations, obtain power series, and compute special values of the function $\frac{v^j}{1-\operatorname{e}^{-v}}$, its derivatives, and related ones used in Clark--Ismail's two conjectures. By these results, the authors also discover a formula for the determinant of a Hessenberg matrix and derive logarithmic convexity of a sequence related to the function and its derivatives.
Note on expanding implicit functions into formal power series by means of multivariable Stirling polynomials
Starting from the representation of a function $f(x,y)$ as a formal power series with Taylor coefficients $f_{m,n}$, we establish a formal series for the implicit function $y=y(x)$ such that $f(x,y)=0$ and the coefficients of the series for $y$ depend exclusively on the $f_{m,n}$. The solution to this problem provided here relies on using partial Bell polynomials and their orthogonal companions.

In the paper, by virtue of expansions of two finite products of finitely many square sums, with the aid of series expansions of composite functions of (hyperbolic) sine and cosine functions with inverse sine and cosine functions, and in the light of properties of partial Bell polynomials, the author establishes Taylor's series expansions of real powers of two functions containing squares of inverse (hyperbolic) cosine functions in terms of the Stirling numbers of the first kind, presents an explicit formula of specific partial Bell polynomials at a sequence of derivatives of a function containing the square of inverse cosine function, derives several combinatorial identities involving the Stirling numbers of the first kind, demonstrates several series representations of the circular constant Pi and its real powers, recovers series expansions of positive integer powers of inverse (hyperbolic) sine functions in terms of the Stirling numbers of the first kind, and also deduces other useful, meaningful, and significant conclusions.

In the paper, the authors establish Maclaurin's series expansions and series identities for positive integer powers of the inverse sine function, for positive integer powers of the inverse hyperbolic sine function, for the composite of incomplete gamma functions with the inverse hyperbolic sine function, for positive integer powers of the inverse tangent function, and for positive integer powers of the inverse hyperbolic tangent function, in terms of the first kind Stirling numbers and binomial coefficients, apply the newly established Maclaurin's series expansion for positive integer powers of the inverse sine function to derive a closed-form formula for specific values of partial Bell polynomials and to derive a series representation of the generalized logsine function, and deduce several combinatorial identities involving the first kind Stirling numbers. Some of these results simplify and unify some known ones. All of these newly established Maclaurin's series expansions of positive integer powers of the inverse (hyperbolic) sine and tangent functions can be used to derive infinite series representations of the circular constant Pi and of positive integer powers of Pi.

The objective of this paper is, in the main, twofold: Firstly, to develop an algebraic setting for dealing with Bell polynomials and related extensions. Secondly, based on the author's previous work on multivariate Stirling polynomials (2015), to present a number of new results related to different types of inverse relationships, among these (1) the use of multivariable Lah polynomials for characterizing self-orthogonal families of polynomials that can be represented by Bell polynomials, (2) the introduction of `generalized Lagrange inversion polynomials' that invert functions characterized in a specific way by sequences of constants, (3) a general reciprocity theorem according to which, in particular, the partial Bell polynomials $B_{n,k}$ and their orthogonal companions $A_{n,k}$ belong to one single class of Stirling polynomials: $A_{n,k}=(-1)^{n-k}B_{-k,-n}$. Moreover, of some numerical statements (such as Stirling inversion, Schlömilch-Schläfli formulas) generalized polynomial versions are established. A number of well-known theorems (Jabotinsky, Mullin-Rota, Melzak, Comtet) are given new proofs.
Closed forms for powers and inverses of special matrices
This contribution is motivated by old and recent works on matrix powers and their applications on combinatorial sequences. We give in this paper the $s$-th powers and the inverses for special upper triangular matrices and the $s$-th powers for special non-triangular matrices. The used tools are Lagrange inversion formula and the partial Bell polynomials.

We present several bijections, in terms of combinatorial objects counted by the Schröder numbers, that are then used (via coloring) for the construction and enumeration of rational Schröder paths with integer slope, ordered rooted trees, and simple rooted outerplanar maps. On the other hand, we derive partial Bell polynomial identities for the little and large Schröder numbers, which allow us to obtain explicit enumeration formulas.

We study a class of rational Dyck paths with slope (2m+1)/2 corresponding to factor-free Dyck words, as introduced by P. Duchon. We show that, for the slopes considered in this paper, the language of factor-free Dyck words is generated by an auxiliary language that we examine from the algebraic and combinatorial points of view. We provide a lattice path description of this language, and give an explicit enumeration formula in terms of partial Bell polynomials. As a corollary, we obtain new formulas for the number of associated factor-free generalized Dyck words.

We introduce a family of sequence transformations, defined via partial Bell polynomials, that may be used for a systematic study of a wide variety of problems in enumerative combinatorics. This family includes some of the transformations listed in the paper by Bernstein & Sloane, now seen as transformations under the umbrella of partial Bell polynomials. Our goal is to describe these transformations from the algebraic and combinatorial points of view. We provide functional equations satisfied by the generating functions, derive inverse relations, and give a convolution formula. While the full range of applications remains unexplored, in this paper we show a glimpse of the versatility of Bell transformations by discussing the enumeration of several combinatorial configurations, including rational Dyck paths, rooted planar maps, and certain classes of permutations.

For $a,b\in\mathbb{N}_0$, we consider $(an+b)$-color compositions of a positive integer $ν$ for which each part of size $n$ admits $an+b$ colors. We study these compositions from the enumerative point of view and give a formula for the number of $(an+b)$-color compositions of $ν$ with $k$ parts. Our formula is obtained in two different ways: 1) by means of algebraic properties of partial Bell polynomials, and 2) through a bijection to a certain family of weak compositions that we call domino compositions. We also discuss two cases when $b$ is negative and give corresponding combinatorial interpretations.
Some Formulas for Numbers of Restricted Words
We define a quantity $c_m(n,k)$ as a generalization of the notion of the composition of the positive integer $n$ into $k$ parts. We proceed to derive some known properties of this quantity. In particular, we relate two partial Bell polynomials, in which the sequence of the variables of one polynomial is the invert transform of the sequence of the variables of the other. We connect the quantities $c_m(n,k)$ and $c_{m-1}(n,k)$ via Pascal matrices. We then relate $c_m(n,k)$ with the numbers of some restricted words over a finite alphabet. We develop a method which transfers some properties of restricted words over an alphabet of $N$ letters to the restricted words over an alphabet of $N+1$ letters. Several examples illustrate our findings. Note that all our results depend solely on the initial arithmetic function $f_0$.

Motivated by independent results of Bizley and Duchon, we study rational Dyck paths and their subset of factor-free elements. On the one hand, we give a bijection between rational Dyck paths and regular Dyck paths with ascents colored by factor-free words. This bijection leads to a new statistic based on the reducibility level of the paths for which we provide a corresponding formula. On the other hand, we prove an inverse relation for certain sequences defined via partial Bell polynomials, and we use it to derive a formula for the enumeration of factor-free words. In addition, we give alternative formulas for various enumerative sequences that appear in the context of rational Dyck paths.

We consider a class of lattice paths with certain restrictions on their ascents and down steps and use them as building blocks to construct various families of Dyck paths. We let every building block $P_j$ take on $c_j$ colors and count all of the resulting colored Dyck paths of a given semilength. Our approach is to prove a recurrence relation of convolution type, which yields a representation in terms of partial Bell polynomials that simplifies the handling of different colorings. This allows us to recover multiple known formulas for Dyck paths and related lattice paths in an unified manner.

For a given integer $d\ge 1$, we consider $\binom{n+d-1}{d}$-color compositions of a positive integer $ν$ for which each part of size $n$ admits $\binom{n+d-1}{d}$ colors. We give explicit formulas for the enumeration of such compositions, generalizing existing results for $n$-color compositions (case $d=1$) and $\binom{n+1}{2}$-color compositions (case $d=2$). In addition, we give bijections from the set of $\binom{n+d-1}{d}$-color compositions of $ν$ to the set of compositions of $(d+1)ν- 1$ having only parts of size $1$ and $d+1$, the set of compositions of $(d+1)ν$ having only parts of size congruent to $1$ modulo $d+1$, and the set of compositions of $(d+1)ν+ d$ having no parts of size less than $d+1$. Our results rely on basic properties of partial Bell polynomials and on a suitable adaptation of known bijections for $n$-color compositions.
