Combinatorial identities derived from explicit formulas of Gauss hypergeometric functions
In present paper, with the help of the Faà di Bruno formula and identities of partial Bell polynomials, the author establishes explicit formulas of the Gauss hypergeometric functions \begin{gather*} {\,}_2F_1\biggl(\frac{1-n}{2},\frac{2-n}{2};\frac{3}{2}-m;z^2\biggr), \quad {\,}_2F_1\biggl(-\frac{n}{2},\frac{1-n}{2};\frac{1}{2}-m;z^2\biggr),\\ {\,}_2F_1\biggl(a,a+\frac{1}{2};\frac{3}{2}-m;z^2\biggr), \quad {\,}_2F_1\biggl(a,a+\frac{1}{2};\frac{1}{2}-m;z^2\biggr) \end{gather*} for $m,n\in\mathbb{N}$ and $a\in\mathbb{C}$, and then derives two combinatorial identities \begin{equation*} \sum_{k=0}^{m}\frac{2^k}{k!} \binom{2m-2k}{m-k} \sum_{\ell=0}^{k} \frac{(-1)^\ell}{2^\ell} \frac{(2k-2\ell-1)!!}{(n-\ell)!} \binom{2k-\ell-1}{\ell-1} =\frac{1}{n!}\binom{2m-n}{m} \end{equation*} and \begin{equation*} \sum_{k=1}^{m}\frac{1}{(k!)^2}\binom{2m-2k}{m-k} \sum_{\ell=1}^{k} \binom{k}{\ell}\ell(2k-\ell-1)! (2a)_\ell =\binom{2m+2a}{m}, \end{equation*} where $m\in\mathbb{N}_0$, $n\in\mathbb{Z}$, and $a\in\mathbb{C}$. These newly-established identities generalize the nice and beautiful combinatorial identity \begin{equation*} \sum_{k=0}^{n} \frac{2^{k}}{k!}\binom{2n-2k}{n-k} \sum_{j=0}^{k}\frac{(-1)^{j}}{2^j} \frac{(2k-2j-1)!!}{(n-j)!} \binom{2k-j-1}{j-1} =\frac{1}{n!}, \quad n\in\mathbb{N}_0, \end{equation*} which was obtained in Theorem 4 of the recent paper "F. Qi, C.-Y. He, and D. Lim, Explicit formulas of two Gauss hypergeometric functions and several combinatorial identities, Discrete Appl. Math., Vol. 393 (2026), 215--229. Analytic and combinatorial approaches to a weighted Catalan sum
We analyze a weighted convolution of Catalan numbers $$ \sum_{k=0}^{n} \binom{2k}{k}\binom{2(n-k)}{n-k} a^k = \sum_{k=0}^{n} (k+1)(n-k+1) C_k C_{n-k} a^k, $$ emphasizing its combinatorial, analytic, and probabilistic aspects. We derive a compact closed form in terms of the Gauss hypergeometric function ${}_2F_1(-n,1/2;1;1-a)$, valid for all complex values of the parameter $a$. The sum admits a natural interpretation in terms of return probabilities of independent simple random walks, linking weighted convolutions of central binomial coefficients to classical probability theory. Furthermore, a refinement via Narayana numbers highlights the contribution of peak distributions in pairs of Dyck paths, providing a finer combinatorial perspective. An integral representation is also proposed, suggesting a connection with orthogonal polynomials and spectral measures. Our approach illustrates how analytic and probabilistic techniques complement combinatorial reasoning in evaluating complex sums.
Staircase hook-length ratios and special values of Jacobi polynomials
We relate hook-length products for adjacent staircase partitions to special values of Jacobi polynomials. This connection expresses the number of semistandard tableaux in terms of Jacobi polynomials defined via Gauss hypergeometric functions. From this identity, we derive the special values of stable Grothendieck polynomials and $K$-theoretic Schur $P$-functions indexed by adjacent staircase partitions. These values provide ratios of the numbers of set-valued and shifted set-valued semistandard tableaux. This connection is further clarified by the theory of excited Young diagrams, which characterizes the coefficients in these specializations.
Combinatorics of Even-Valent Graphs on Riemann Surfaces
Using connections to random matrix theory and orthogonal polynomials, we develop a framework for obtaining explicit closed-form formulae for the number, $\mathscr{N}_{g}(2ν,j)$, of connected $2ν$-valent labeled graphs with $j$ vertices that can be embedded on a compact Riemann surface of minimal genus $g$. We also derive formulae for their two-legged counterparts $\mathcal{N}_{g}(2ν,j)$. Our method recovers the known explicit results for graphs embedded on the plane and the torus, and extends them to all genera $g \geq 2$. In earlier work, Ercolani, Lega, and Tippings (2023) showed that $\mathscr{N}_{g}(2ν,j)$ and $\mathcal{N}_{g}(2ν,j)$ admit structural expressions as linear combinations of, respectively, $3g-2$ and $3g$ Gauss hypergeometric functions ${}_2F_1$, but with coefficients left undetermined. The framework developed here provides a systematic procedure to compute these coefficients, thereby turning the structural expressions into fully explicit formulae for $\mathscr{N}_{g}(2ν,j)$ and $\mathcal{N}_{g}(2ν,j)$ as functions of both $j$ and $ν$. Detailed results are given for $g=2,3,$ and $4$, and the framework extends naturally to all $g \geq 5$ with increasing computational effort. This closes the fixed genus combinatorics for even-valent graphs.
Special values of Grothendieck polynomials in terms of hypergeometric functions
We give some special values of Grothendieck polynomials and an explicit formula for the number of set-valued tableaux. For Young diagrams consisting of a single row or a single column, both the value and number are written by the Gauss' hypergeometric function ${}_2F_1$. For general Young diagrams, the Holman hypergeometric function $F^{(n)}$ is used to represent both the value and count. As an application, we derive a summation formula for $F^{(n)}$.

Many combinatorial and other number triangles are solutions of recurrences of the Graham-Knuth-Patashnik (GKP) type. Such triangles and their defining recurrences are investigated analytically. They are acted on by a transformation group generated by two involutions: a left-right reflection and an upper binomial transformation, acting row-wise. The group also acts on the bivariate exponential generating function (EGF) of the triangle. By the method of characteristics, the EGF of any GKP triangle has an implicit representation in terms of the Gauss hypergeometric function. There are several parametric cases when this EGF can be obtained in closed form. One is when the triangle elements are the generalized Stirling numbers of Hsu and Shiue. Another is when they are generalized Eulerian numbers of a newly defined kind. These numbers are related to the Hsu-Shiue ones by an upper binomial transformation, and can be viewed as coefficients of connection between polynomial bases, in a manner that generalizes the classical Worpitzky identity. Many identities involving these generalized Eulerian numbers and related generalized Narayana numbers are derived, including closed-form evaluations in combinatorially significant cases.
Power series expansion of Wilf function
In the research, with aid of the Faà di Bruno formula, be virtue of several identities for the Bell polynomials of the second kind, with help of two combinatorial identities, by means of the (logarithmically) complete monotonicity of generating functions of several integer sequences, and in light of the Wronski theorem, the author \begin{enumerate} \item establishes the Taylor power series expansions of several functions involving the inverse (hyperbolic) tangent function; \item finds out the Maclaurin power series expansion of the Wilf function, which is a composite of the inverse tangent, square root, and exponential functions; \item expresses the coefficients in the Maclaurin power series expansion of the Wilf function in terms of the Stirling numbers of the second kind; \item analyzes some properties, including generating functions, limits, positivity, monotonicity, and logarithmic convexity, of the coefficients in the Maclaurin power series expansion of the Wilf function; \item derives a closed-form formula for a sequence of special values of the Gauss hypergeometric function; \item discovers a closed-form formula for a sequence of special values of the Bell polynomials of the second kind; \item presents several infinite series representations of the circular constant and other sequences; \item recovers an asymptotic rational approximation to the circular constant; \item and connects several integer sequences by determinants. \end{enumerate}

We describe a class of fixed polyominoes called $k$-omino towers that are created by stacking rectangular blocks of size $k\times 1$ on a convex base composed of these same $k$-omino blocks. By applying a partition to the set of $k$-omino towers of fixed area $kn$, we give a recurrence on the $k$-omino towers therefore showing the set of $k$-omino towers is enumerated by a Gauss hypergeometric function. The proof in this case implies a more general hypergeometric identity with parameters similar to those given in a classical result of Kummer.

We study nearest-neighbors walks on the two-dimensional square lattice, that is, models of walks on $\mathbb{Z}^2$ defined by a fixed step set that is a subset of the non-zero vectors with coordinates 0, 1 or $-1$. We concern ourselves with the enumeration of such walks starting at the origin and constrained to remain in the quarter plane $\mathbb{N}^2$, counted by their length and by the position of their ending point. Bousquet-Mélou and Mishna [Contemp. Math., pp. 1--39, Amer. Math. Soc., 2010] identified 19 models of walks that possess a D-finite generating function; linear differential equations have then been guessed in these cases by Bostan and Kauers [FPSAC 2009, Discrete Math. Theor. Comput. Sci. Proc., pp. 201--215, 2009]. We give here the first proof that these equations are indeed satisfied by the corresponding generating functions. As a first corollary, we prove that all these 19 generating functions can be expressed in terms of Gauss' hypergeometric functions that are intimately related to elliptic integrals. As a second corollary, we show that all the 19 generating functions are transcendental, and that among their $19 \times 4$ combinatorially meaningful specializations only four are algebraic functions.
Normalized incomplete beta function: log-concavity in parameters and other properties

The normalized incomplete beta function can be defined either as cumulative distribution function of beta density or as the Gauss hypergeometric function with one of the upper parameters equal to unity. Logarithmic concavity/convexity of this function in parameters was established by Finner and Roters in 1997. Their proof is indirect and rather difficult; it is based on generalized reproductive property of certain more general distributions. These authors remark that these results "seems to be very hard to obtain by usual analytic methods". In the first part of this paper we provide such proof based on standard tools of analysis. In the second part we go one step further and investigate the sign of generalized Turán determinants formed by shifts of the normalized incomplete beta function. Under some additional restrictions we demonstrate that these coefficients are of the same sign. We further conjecture that such restrictions can be removed without altering the results. Our method of proof also leads to various companion results which may be of independent interest. In particular, we establish linearization formulas and two-sided bounds for the above mentioned Turán determinants. Further, we find two combinatorial style identities for finite sums which we believe to be new.
A quantization of the harmonic analysis on the infinite-dimensional unitary group

The present work stemmed from the study of the problem of harmonic analysis on the infinite-dimensional unitary group U(\infty). That problem consisted in the decomposition of a certain 4-parameter family of unitary representations, which replace the nonexisting two-sided regular representation (Olshanski, J. Funct. Anal., 2003, arXiv:0109193). The required decomposition is governed by certain probability measures on an infinite-dimensional space Ω, which is a dual object to U(\infty). A way to describe those measures is to convert them into determinantal point processes on the real line, it turned out that their correlation kernels are computable in explicit form --- they admit a closed expression in terms of the Gauss hypergeometric function 2-F-1 (Borodin and Olshanski, Ann. Math., 2005, arXiv:0109194).
In the present work we describe a (nonevident) q-discretization of the whole construction. This leads us to a new family of determinantal point processes. We reveal its connection with an exotic finite system of q-discrete orthogonal polynomials --- the so-called pseudo big q-Jacobi polynomials. The new point processes live on a double q-lattice and we show that their correlation kernels are expressed through the basic hypergeometric function 2-φ-1.
A crucial novel ingredient of our approach is an extended version G of the Gelfand-Tsetlin graph (the conventional graph describes the Gelfand-Tsetlin branching rule for irreducible representations of unitary groups). We find the q-boundary of G, thus extending previously known results (Gorin, Adv. Math., 2012, arXiv:1011.1769).

We study a family of continuous time Markov jump processes on strict partitions (partitions with distinct parts) preserving the distributions introduced by Borodin (1997) in connection with projective representations of the infinite symmetric group. The one-dimensional distributions of the processes (i.e., the Borodin's measures) have determinantal structure. We express the dynamical correlation functions of the processes in terms of certain Pfaffians and give explicit formulas for both the static and dynamical correlation kernels using the Gauss hypergeometric function. Moreover, we are able to express our correlation kernels (both static and dynamical) through those of the z-measures on partitions obtained previously by Borodin and Olshanski in a series of papers.
The results about the fixed time case were announced in the author's note arXiv:1002.2714. A part of the present paper contains proofs of those results.
Power law behavior associated with a Fibonacci Lucas model and generalized statistical models
A Fibonacci-Lucas based statistical model and several other related models are studied. The canonical and grand canonical partition functions for these models are developed.Partition structure such as the distribution of sizes as in a cluster distribution is explored.Ensemble averaging over all partitions leads to a scale invariant power law behavior at a particular critical like point. The canonical ensemble of the Fibonacci-Lucas case involves the Gegenbauer polynomial. The model has a hyperbolic power law behavior, a feature linked to the golden mean ratio of two adjacent Fibonacci numbers and also the connection of Lucas numbers to the golden mean. The relation to other power law behavior, such as Zipf and Pareto laws, is mentioned. For the cases considered, the grand canonical ensemble involves the Gauss hypergeometric function F(a,b,c,z) with specific values for a,b,c. The general case has a variable power law behavior with tau exponent equal to1+c-a-b. An application with a=1/2, b=1, c=3 and thus tau=5/2 very closely approximates Bose-Einstein condensation. The zeta function zeta(3/2)=2.61 of the exact theory is replaced with 8/3 and zeta(5/2)= 1.34 with 4/3. At the condensation point the number of cycles of length falls as a scale invariant power law. The cycles, which arise from permutation symmetries associated with Bose-Einstein statistics, can be viewed as links in a complex network of connections between particles. This scale invariant power law parallels that seen in complex networks. The growth of the network is developed using recurrence properties of the model. Constraints imposed by the canonical ensemble and associates correlations lead to some number theoretic connections between Fibonacci and Lucas numbers as an incidental consequence of this approach.

We consider a point process on one-dimensional lattice originated from the harmonic analysis on the infinite symmetric group, and defined by the z-measures with the deformation (Jack) parameter 2. We derive an exact Pfaffian formula for the correlation function of this process. Namely, we prove that the correlation function is given as a Pfaffian with a matrix kernel. The kernel is given in terms of the Gauss hypergeometric functions, and can be considered as a matrix analogue of the Hypergeometric kernel introduced by A. Borodin and G. Olshanski. Our result holds for all values of admissible complex parameters.
Regular trees in random regular graphs
We investigate the size of the embedded regular tree rooted at a vertex in a $d$ regular random graph. We show that almost always, the radius of this tree will be ${1/2}\log n$, where $n$ is the number of vertices in the graph. And we give an asymptotic estimate for Gauss' Hypergeometric Function.

Euler's transformation formula for the Gauss hypergeometric function 2F1 is extended to hypergeometric functions of higher order. Unusually, the generalized transformation constrains the hypergeometric function parameters algebraically but not linearly. Its consequences for hypergeometric summation are explored. It has as corollary a summation formula of Slater. From this formula new one-term evaluations of 2F1(-1) and 3F2(1) are derived, by applying transformations in the Thomae group. Their parameters are also constrained nonlinearly. Several new one-term evaluations of 2F1(-1) with linearly constrained parameters are derived as well.

The infinite-dimensional unitary group U(infinity) is the inductive limit of growing compact unitary groups U(N). In this paper we solve a problem of harmonic analysis on U(infinity) stated in the previous paper math/0109193. The problem consists in computing spectral decomposition for a remarkable 4-parameter family of characters of U(infinity). These characters generate representations which should be viewed as analogs of nonexisting regular representation of U(infinity).
The spectral decomposition of a character of U(infinity) is described by the spectral measure which lives on an infinite-dimensional space Omega of indecomposable characters. The key idea which allows us to solve the problem is to embed Omega into the space of point configurations on the real line without 2 points. This turns the spectral measure into a stochastic point process on the real line. The main result of the paper is a complete description of the processes corresponding to our concrete family of characters. We prove that each of the processes is a determinantal point process. That is, its correlation functions have determinantal form with a certain kernel. Our kernels have a special `integrable' form and are expressed through the Gauss hypergeometric function.
In simpler situations of harmonic analysis on infinite symmetric group and harmonic analysis of unitarily invariant measures on infinite hermitian matrices similar results were obtained in our papers math/9810015, math/9904010, math-ph/0010015.
