Maximum arrangements of nonattacking kings on the $2n\times 2n$ chessboard
Published • View PublicationBIB
To count the number of maximum independent arrangements of $n^2$ kings on a $2n\times 2n$ chessboard, we build a $2^n \times (n+1)$ matrix whose entries are independent arrangements of $n$ kings on $2\times 2n$ rectangles. Utilizing upper and lower bound functions dependent of the entries of the matrix, we recursively construct independent solutions, and provide a straight-forward formula and algorithm.

The Problem of Pawns
Published in Elec. J. Comb. 22(3) (2019) Article P3.21 • Search Publication
Using a bijective proof, we show the number of ways to arrange a maximum number of nonattacking pawns on a $2m\times 2m$ chessboard is ${2m\choose m}^2$, and more generally, the number of ways to arrange a maximum number of nonattacking pawns on a $2n \times 2m$ chessboard is ${m+n\choose n}^2$.

On the unimodality of convolutions of sequences of binomial coefficients
Published in J. Integer Seq. 22 (2019) Article 19.2.8 • Search Publication
We provide necessary and sufficient conditions on the unimodality of a convolution of two sequences of binomial coefficients preceded by a finite number of ones. These convolution sequences arise as as rank sequences of posets of vertex-induced subtrees for a particular class of trees. The number of such trees whose poset of vertex-induced subgraphs containing the root is not rank unimodal is determined for a fixed number of vertices $i$.

Convex domino towers
Published in J. Integer Seq. 20(3) (2017), Article 17.3.1 • Search Publication
We study convex domino towers using a classic dissection technique on polyominoes to find the generating function and an asymptotic approximation.

On the enumeration of k-omino towers
Published in Discrete Math. 340 (2017), 1319--1326 • View PublicationBIB
We describe a class of fixed polyominoes called $k$-omino towers that are created by stacking rectangular blocks of size $k\times 1$ on a convex base composed of these same $k$-omino blocks. By applying a partition to the set of $k$-omino towers of fixed area $kn$, we give a recurrence on the $k$-omino towers therefore showing the set of $k$-omino towers is enumerated by a Gauss hypergeometric function. The proof in this case implies a more general hypergeometric identity with parameters similar to those given in a classical result of Kummer.

Exploring mod2 n-queens games
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a two player game on an n x n chessboard where queens are placed by alternating turns on a chessboard square whose availability is determined by the number of queens already on the board which can attack that square modulo two. The game is explored along with some variations and its complexity.
