Layered mixed matrices and reaction networks
The purpose of this work is twofold. In the first part, we consider layered mixed matrices introduced by Murota, relate them to existing notions in combinatorial commutative algebra, and investigate the irreducibility of their determinants. Furthermore, for a layered mixed matrix in combinatorial canonical form, we determine the sparsity structure of its inverse. That is, we characterize which entries of the inverse are nonzero.
In the second part, we establish for the first time a formal connection between these algebraic results and the theory of buffering structures for reaction networks developed by Mochizuki and Okada. We identify the lattice of buffering structures with the lattice of order ideals of the block poset of the combinatorial canonical form of the associated layered mixed matrix. This allows us to characterize the reducibility of the symbolic Jacobian determinant as a polynomial in the reaction-rate derivatives, as well as the nonzero sensitivity responses of species concentrations to reaction-rate perturbations.
A New Sufficient Condition for Oriented Graphs Determined by Their Generalized Skew Spectra
Characterizing graphs uniquely determined by their spectra (DS) is a core open problem in spectral graph theory. While this problem has been extensively investigated for simple undirected graphs, it remains relatively underexplored for oriented graphs. For a simple undirected graph $G$ equipped with an orientation $σ$, the corresponding oriented graph $Σ=(G,σ)$ is the digraph obtained by orienting each edge of $G$ according to $σ$. An oriented graph $Σ$ is said to be \emph{determined by its generalized skew spectrum} (DGSS) if every oriented graph sharing the same generalized skew spectrum is isomorphic to $Σ$.
This paper develops a new sufficient criterion for recognizing DGSS controllable oriented graphs, which applies to a much broader family of graphs than previously known results. Let $S$ be the skew-adjacency matrix of $Σ$, $W(Σ)=[e,Se,\ldots,S^{n-1}e]$, and $d_n$ the last invariant factor of $W(Σ)$. For each odd prime $p$, we define the polynomial $Φ_p(Σ;x)=\gcd(χ(S;x),χ(S+J;x))$ over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_p$, which is invariant under generalized skew cospectrality.
By analyzing the square-free part of $Φ_p(Σ;x)$ and the associated $p$-main polynomial, we establish a DGSS sufficient condition under the square-free assumption on $d_n$. The proposed criterion allows higher $p$-nullity and recovers the square-free determinant criterion of Qiu, Wang and Wang~(2019) as a special case. We further provide illustrative examples to verify the wider applicability of our new condition and to highlight the role of the compatibility constraints on the irreducible factors of $Φ_p(Σ;x)$.
All-Minors Matrix-Tree Theory for Superport Networks: Completed Quotient-Incidence Determinants and Conductance-Weighted Subdivision Extensions
An electrical network can be summarized at its boundary by a response matrix: prescribed boundary voltages determine boundary currents. A superport network adds a constraint by grouping boundary terminals into superports, requiring the total current in each group to be zero and making voltage differences inside the groups the natural coordinates. Earlier work determined forest formulas for a single response entry and for the determinant of the whole response matrix. The missing case was an arbitrary subdeterminant, or minor: one needs to know not only which spanning forests contribute, but also the sign carried by each forest. This paper supplies that sign rule. After choosing one reference vertex in each superport, the response is \[ L=\left(D^{T}K^{-1}D\right)^{-1}, \] with \(K\) the grounded weighted Laplacian and \(D\) recording the selected voltage differences. Contracting the components of a physical spanning forest \(F\) produces a much smaller quotient port graph \(H_F\). Its reduced incidence matrix \[ B_F=Q_FD \] has columns only of the forms \[ 0,\qquad \pm e_a,\qquad e_a-e_b. \] Hence every square incidence minor is exactly \(0\) or \(\pm1\). For a \(k\)-set of response coordinates \(I\), append to \(B_F\) the selector rows \(E_I^{T}\) and define the completed quotient-incidence determinant \[ \widehatχ_F(I) = \det \begin{pmatrix} B_F\\ E_I^{T} \end{pmatrix}. \] For coordinate sets \(I,J\) of the same size, the arbitrary response minor is a weighted spanning-forest sum whose coefficient is simply \[ \widehatχ_F(I)\widehatχ_F(J). \] Thus the Jacobi complementary-minor factors used in the derivation disappear from the final theorem. Direct block-triangular reduction gives \[ \widehatχ_F(I)\in\{0,\pm1\}, \] with nonvanishing occurring exactly when the complementary quotient edges \(N\setminus I\) form a spanning tree of \(H_F\).
Diagrammatic Okada monoid and cellularity of the Okada algebra
It is well known that the Young lattice is the Bratelli diagram of the symmetric groups, expressing how irreducible representations restrict from $\mathfrak{S}_{N}$ to $\mathfrak{S}_{N-1}$. In 1975, Stanley discovered a similar lattice called the Young-Fibonacci lattice which was identified as the Bratelli diagram of a family of algebras $\{\mathbf{O}_N(X,Y)\}_{N \geq 0}$ by Okada in 1994.
In this paper, we first realize the Okada algebra $\mathbf{O}_N(X,Y)$ and the associated monoid $\mathbf{O}_N$ using a labelled version of non-crossing arc-diagrams appearing in the description of the Temperley-Lieb algebra and Jones monoid. We establish, for general parameters $(X,Y)$, that the dimension of the Okada algebra $\mathbf{O}_N(X,Y)$ is $N!$, noting that Okada proved this result only in the semisimple case. We interpret a natural bijection between permutations and labelled arc-diagrams as an incarnation of Fomin's version of the Robinson-Schensted correspondence associated to the Young-Fibonacci lattice. The arc-diagram formalism allow us to probe the structure of the Okada monoid and algebra. In particular we prove that the Okada monoid is a regular, aperiodic $*$-monoid and we describe its Green relations and order.
These results allow us to construct a cellular basis of the Okada algebra and to show that $\{\mathbf{O}_N(X,Y)\}_{N \geq 0}$ forms a coherent tower of cellular algebras in the sense of Goodman and Graber. We present some conjectures expressing the Gram determinant of the invariant bilinear form attached to each cell module in terms of Okada's clone Schur functions. We conclude the paper by presenting two follow-up, ongoing projects along with a series of questions pushing further the analogy between the symmetric groups and the Okada algebras.
Binary Multiple-Node-Erasure-Correcting Codes over Complete Graphs: Constructions, q-Ary Metric Balls, and Duality
We study linear codes whose coordinates are the ordinary edges and self-loops of complete undirected graphs; a node erasure removes all coordinates incident with a failed vertex. The construction results are binary. For triple-node erasures, we extend the published cyclic construction by allowing a suitable cyclic check slope to depend on the prime graph length. An explicit determinant test proves that one of three fixed slope choices works at infinitely many prime lengths, unconditionally, and gives redundancy $3n-2$, one bit above the graph Singleton bound. We also give Singleton-optimal triple-node codes at $n=6,8,10,12$, together with a general ordinary-edge framework that isolates the remaining loop-completion problem. When $2$ is primitive modulo an odd prime $n$, a binary multi-slope construction corrects every $ρ$-node erasure for $2\leqρ<n$, with redundancy $ρn-(ρ-1)$ in the range $2\leqρ\leq(n+1)/2$. Returning to arbitrary prime powers, we derive exact generating transforms and inclusion--exclusion formulas for node-metric ball volumes, fixed-radius asymptotics, and packing, existence, and covering bounds. Finally, for the complementary clique-erasure metric, we obtain an exact weight enumerator and a Singleton-optimal node--clique duality.
Equivariant Analytic Spectral Invariants of Açıkmeşe Lifts of Graphs with Self-Loops
We introduce and study equivariant analytic spectral invariants associated with the Açıkmeşe lift of a graph with self-loops $G_S$. The canonical $\mathbb{Z}_2$-action yields an orthogonal isotypic decomposition of the lifted Laplacian into the anti-symmetric part $\mathcal{L}(G_S)$ and the symmetric part $M_{sym}$, from which we prove that the spectrum of $\mathcal{L}(G_S)$ is exactly the even-indexed spectrum of the lifted Laplacian. We express twisted moments of these blocks as traces of the generalised twisted moment operator against the corresponding $\mathbb{Z}_2$-projections, and obtain a tight upper bound under certain restriction with a characterization of the equality case. We introduce the equivariant heat character and establish a trace-norm stability estimate. For the matrix element of the resolvent $(pI+\mathcal{L}(G_S))^{-1}$ associated with the loop vector, we derive a Laplace-transform identity for the equivariant heat character, a determinant formula, a spectral representation, and a Laurent expansion. We further characterize the case where $S$ is a union of connected components through resolvent and equivariant heat-character identities, and obtain explicit equivariant heat characters for joins of full-loop graphs and the line graph of a full-loop connected regular graph. Finally, we introduce the regularized equivariant heat integral and derive spectral and trace formulas for it.
Hankel determinants of Catalan-like sequences
In this paper, we compute the (shifted) Hankel determinants of Catalan-like sequences, which arise naturally from the weighted enumerations of nonintersecting Motzkin meanders. Among these determinant evaluations, one and a half are newly discovered, featuring generic shifted Hankel determinants; two were formulated earlier by Cigler and Krattenthaler in an equivalent combinatorial form; and the rest were conjectured by Cigler. As an application, we further confirm a conjectural binomial determinant identity proposed by Cigler and Krattenthaler.
Gluing Formula for the Pseudo-Determinant of Graph Laplacian and Applications to Counting of Spanning Trees
In this paper, we establish a gluing formula for the pseudo-determinant of the Laplacian on a simple finite graph. We achieve this by using the gluing formula for the determinant of massive Laplacian and the perturbation theory technique. In addition, we apply this gluing relation to derive a gluing formula for the number of spanning trees and rooted spanning forests on simple finite graphs.
On Spectra of $\mathbb{T}$-Gain Digraphs
A \(\mathbb{T}\)-gain digraph is a directed graph with complex unit gains on its arcs, allowing for no restrictions on oppositely directed arcs. This framework unifies various graph types, such as signed graphs, mixed graphs, complex unit gain graphs, digraphs, and signed digraphs. The gain adjacency, Laplacian, and signless Laplacian matrices are generally non-Hermitian with complex spectra. We develop the spectral theory of these matrices, extending classical results from signed digraphs and complex unit-gain graphs. For the gain adjacency matrix, we establish determinant and characteristic polynomial formulas, characterize cycle balance through switching equivalence and cospectrality with the underlying digraph. We further bound the spectral radius in terms of the underlying digraph and its maximum out-degree, with equality characterized by $μ$-balance. As a consequence, we determine the spectra of $\mathbb{T}$-gain unicyclic digraphs. Moreover, we characterize cycle balance and antibalance for the Laplacian and signless Laplacian matrices, respectively, through the presence of a zero eigenvalue.
The List Edge-Coloring Conjecture for Two New Infinite Families of Complete Graphs
Let $p$ be an odd prime. We prove the List Edge-Coloring Conjecture for two infinite families of complete graphs: \[
χ'_{\ell}(K_{p-1})=p-2,
\qquad
χ'_{\ell}(K_{2p})=2p-1. \] The two proofs control the Pfaffian sign of one-factorizations by complementary modular methods. For $K_{p-1}$, Frobenius and a skew specialization turn Glynn's determinant-coefficient congruence into a squarefree Pfaffian coefficient. A divided difference then reduces the remaining calculation to a single antidiagonal Pfaffian and gives \[[x^{\mathbf{1}}]\mbox{Pf}(X)^{p-2}\equiv(-2)^{(p-1)/2}\pmod{p}.\] For $K_{2p}$, a weighted Burnside count for the translation group $\Bbb{F}_p^2$ isolates a signed cyclic-starter sum. A skew-circulant cofactor identity evaluates its square and gives \[
S_{2p}\equiv-p\pmod{p^2}. \] In particular, both decisive signed sums are nonzero. Neither congruence is a formal consequence of Latin-square parity: the bipartite determinant sign and the nonbipartite Pfaffian sign are different invariants. Instead, the proofs develop a determinant--Pfaffian bridge and a signed Burnside--Fourier method adapted to the complete-graph sign. We also locate a limit of the latter method. For every even $b\ge4$, the signed trace of a full-support translation on $K_{bp}$ is divisible by $p^b$. For $b=4$ this implies $p^4\mid S_{4p}$ but supplies no nonzero residue, revealing a valuation barrier to the full-support higher-layer argument.
Infinite rational distance sets in affine general position: constructions in every dimension
For every integer $d\geq 1$, we construct a countably infinite set $X_d\subset\mathbb{R}^d$ in affine general position, with all pairwise distances rational. When $d$ is odd, $X_d$ may also be chosen so that no $d+2$ points lie on a common sphere. The construction is uniform in $d$: positive Chebyshev square decompositions produce harmonic curves on spheres whose points corresponding to rational parameter values have pairwise rational distances. A divided-difference factorization of the affine determinant shows that sufficiently short arcs are locally convex, and stereographic projection produces the odd-dimensional examples. We also construct infinite rational distance sets in $\mathbb{Q}^d$ in affine general position for every even $d$, and in general position for every $d\equiv 1\pmod 4$. For every $d\geq 1$ and $n\geq d+1$, taking and rescaling suitable finite subsets gives $n$-point integral point sets in affine general position. A suitable ordered choice yields integral-distance realizations of all cyclic polytopes. In dimension three, we give an explicit rational parametrization and obtain infinitely many pairwise non-similar primitive $n_3$-clusters for every $n\geq 4$.
The Partition Pairing Theorems I
The aim of this paper is to introduce pairing theory for partitions. We begin with two statistics on integer partitions, the \emph{pairing index} and the \emph{pairing rank}. The pairing index is equidistributed with the number of parts, while a joint refinement identifies its two constituents with the numbers of even and odd parts. We further introduce the \emph{pairing width} and prove that pairing index and pairing width are jointly equidistributed with the number of parts and the largest part. The resulting finite Gaussian generating function has a cyclotomic factorization from which Kummer's famous carry theorem for binomial coefficients follows. We also prove a mod-$5$ congruence for the excess of unpaired parts congruent to $1$ modulo $4$ over those congruent to $3$ modulo $4$ in the partitions of $5n+4$. A signed specialization exhibits that the parity of the pairing rank is governed by self-conjugate partitions. Motivated by this, we go on to introduce a second, diagrammatic pairing: after the two wings of the Durfee square are folded together, the unpaired cells break into connected \emph{diagonal blocks}. These blocks may be reflected independently, giving a Boolean decomposition of the set of partitions with a unique representative having all successive ranks nonnegative. We then relate our theory to overpartitions and Frobenius representations, obtaining as a corollary a geometric realization of overpartitions in terms of partitions whose principal hooks are all even. Finally, we study simply paired partitions of negative pairing rank, obtaining identities involving odd divisors and overpartitions, a parity theorem for pairing rank $-2$, and a Toeplitz determinant whose coefficientwise limit is an explicit infinite product related to MacMahon's product for plane partitions.
New Records for the Hadamard Maximal Determinant Problem in Dimensions $51$, $107$, and $115$
We compute new lower bounds for determinants of $\{\pm 1\}$-matrices of orders $n=51$, $n=107$ and $n=115$, improving previous recorded bounds by $3.1\%$, $0.44\%$, and $1.68\%$, respectively. We provide the data necessary to construct these matrices.
Schur polynomials twisted by roots of unity and reciprocal pairs: torsion filters, fusion quotients, and an equal-rank reduction at odd order
Write $μ_t$ for all $t$-th roots of unity and $z^{\pm1}$ for $r$ free reciprocal pairs. We study $Φ_{t,r}(β)=s_λ(μ_t,z^{\pm1})$, $β=λ+δ$, and the question the companion paper left open after $r=1$: when does it vanish? We factor the evaluation into classical branching followed by a torsion filter, and the shape depends on the parity of $t$: the point lies in the orthogonal group with determinant $(-1)^{t+1}$. For odd $t$ it sits in the identity component: an ordinary restriction $SO_{2R'+1}\downarrow SO_{2m'+1}\times SO_{2r}$, the filter an odd orthogonal character at a principal element of order $h+1$. For even $t$ in the other: a twining, a virtual expansion, and a torsion element regular but not principal; there we prove the filter, with its sign. One description covers both: the filter is nonzero exactly when the shifted torsion point is regular semisimple in the group. Both are minimal-level fusion projections: the even of type $C$, the tensor sector of the odd of type $B$. Affine folding accounts for the values $0,\pm1$; what it does not survives as conjectures. The highest surviving weight is the dominant vertex of the numerator's Newton polytope minus the denominator's, the latter proved here, the former conditional on a single-orbit property; and the class there --- virtual for even $t$, a genuine multiplicity space for odd --- is conjecturally primitive, $\pm$ the generator of the rank-one quotient. For odd $t$ and one $Λ$ that numerator is a signed transversal count in $\{0,\pm1\}$ by the equal-rank character formula, leaving one division. We invert it in closed form, as a sum along an arithmetic progression of step $2t$; the quotient is $\pmε_t\det M$ for an explicit $0/{\pm}1$ matrix, so total unimodularity of $M$ would settle it. Two extremal statements remain. Everything unproved here is measured, in both parities.
A Newton Identity and Finite-Rank Reconstruction for the Queer Lie Superalgebra
We establish a Newton-type identity for the queer Lie superalgebra $\mathfrak q_N$, relating Sergeev's odd cyclic central elements to Nazarov's one-row Capelli elements. The identity is obtained by comparing Ivanov's generating function for factorial Schur $Q$-functions with the queer Perelomov-Popov product of Grigoryev and Nazarov. Its coefficient expansion yields a triangular change of generators between the odd cyclic and odd one-row families. In particular, the odd one-row Capelli elements generate the center, while the even one-row elements are redundant.
In fixed rank, we derive determinantal relations and a generic reconstruction theorem. The basic cyclic Hankel determinant is identified with a resultant and factored into the failure-of-strong-typicality and shifted-resonance factors. After localization at this determinant, the center is generated by the first $2N$ odd cyclic elements; consequently, generic central characters are determined by their values on these elements.
Lattice balls with large additive energy in discrete cubes
For a finite set $A$ in an abelian group, let \[
E(A)=\#\{(a_1,a_2,a_3,a_4)\in A^4:a_1+a_2=a_3+a_4\}. \]
We obtain an estimate uniform in $d$ that compares the normalized additive energy of $\mathbb{Z}^d \cap B_d(R)$ with the continuous energy of $B_d(R)$ .
If $R_d/\sqrt d\to\infty$, then \[
\lim_{d\to\infty}
\left(
\frac{E\bigl(\mathbb{Z}^d\cap B_d(R_d)\bigr)}
{\lvert \mathbb{Z}^d\cap B_d(R_d)\rvert^3}
\right)^{1/d}
=\frac{4\sqrt{3}}{9}. \] As an application, consider \[
A_n
=
R_n\mathbf{1}_d
+
\bigl(\mathbb{Z}^d\cap B_d(R_n)\bigr), \] where $d=d(n)\to\infty$ satisfy $\log d=o(\log n)$, and $R_n=\lfloor(n-1)/2\rfloor$. Then $A_n\subset\{0,1,\ldots,n-1\}^d$ and \[
\log E(A_n)
=3\log|A_n|-d\log\frac{3\sqrt3}{4}+o(d). \] In particular, taking $d=\lfloor(\log n)^{1/2}\rfloor$ gives an explicit construction answering a question of Shao \cite{Shao2026}. We also prove that in Gram-matrix coordinates, the exponential rate of the continuous ball energy is determined by a fixed dimensional determinant maximization whose extremizer is the Gram matrix of a regular tetrahedron.
Nearly permanental cospectral graphs
Let $G$ be a simple graph of order $n$ with adjacency matrix $A= (a_{ij})$. The \emph{determinant} and the \emph{permanen}t of the matrix $A$ are defined as \[\mathrm{det}A= \sum_{σ\in S_n}\mathrm{sgn}(σ) \prod_{i=1}^n a_{iσ(i)}\quad\text{and}\quad\mathrm{per}A= \sum_{σ\in S_n} \prod_{i=1}^n a_{iσ(i)},\]respectively. The polynomials $φ(G;x) =\mathrm{det}(xI-A(G))$ and $π(G;x) =\mathrm{per}(xI-A(G))$ are called the \emph{characteristic polynomial} and the \emph{permanental polynomial} of $G$, respectively. Two graphs are said to be \emph{nearly cospectral} with respect to the determinant (resp. permanent) if the difference of their characteristic (resp. permanental) polynomials is a constant. Lv et al. introduced the nearly cospectral graphs problem with respect to the determinant, and provided partial results in the case modulo 4. In this paper, we mainly prove that the corresponding results also hold for the nearly cospectral graphs problem with respect to the permanent. The determinant and permanent are the immanants corresponding to the irreducible characters $(1^n)$ and $(n)$ of the symmetric group $ S_n $, respectively. Here, the \emph{immanant} $d_λ(A)$ of $A$ is defined as \[d_λ(A) = \sum_{σ\in S_n} χ_λ(σ) \prod_{i=1}^n a_{iσ(i)},\] where $χ_λ$ is the irreducible character of $ S_n $ indexed by the partition $ λ$. The immanantal polynomial of $G$ associated with $ χ_λ$ is given by $ φ_λ(G;x)=d_λ(xI-A) $. In this paper, we also establish a similar result for nearly immanantal cospectral graphs in $\mathbb{F}_2[x]$ for all irreducible characters $χ_λ$.
Zero-Sum Cycles in Regular Digraphs
Let $Γ$ be a finite group of order $k\ge2$, and label the edges of a simple loopless $d$-regular digraph $D$ by elements of $Γ$. A directed cycle is zero-sum if the ordered product of its labels is the identity of $Γ$. We prove that a zero-sum cycle exists whenever $d\ge e^3(k-1)$. We also prove that every labelled $d$-regular digraph contains $Ω(d/k)$ pairwise vertex-disjoint zero-sum cycles. When $d\ge50k$, it contains $Ω(d^2/k)$ pairwise edge-disjoint zero-sum cycles. All three results are asymptotically optimal. The existence and packing results extend to Eulerian digraphs whose minimum and maximum common degrees $δ$ and $Δ$ satisfy $δ^3/Δ^2=Ω(k)$. The techniques extend a determinant--permanent argument of Friedland for even directed cycles.
Constructions of almost controllable graphs determined by their generalized spectra
Identifying and constructing graphs that are determined by their generalized spectrum (DGS) is a significant and challenging problem in spectral graph theory. Recently, a simple criterion for almost controllable graphs to be DGS was proposed by Lin et al. (2026), utilizing the modified walk matrix. In this paper, we investigate the evolution of the modified walk matrix under disjoint union and join operations with a singleton vertex. We establish an exact algebraic identity for the determinant of the modified walk matrix of the resulting graph. Based on this identity and the DGS-criterion of Lin et al., we construct infinite families of almost controllable graphs that are DGS, extending the previous construction of Liu et al. (2019), which was restricted to controllable graphs.
Hankel Transform and $(α,β)$ Somos-4 Sequences
An $(α,β)$ Somos-$4$ sequence $S_n$ is defined by the recurrence $S_nS_{n-4}=αS_{n-1}S_{n-3}+βS_{n-2}^2$ ($n\geq 4$), with suitable initial values, where $α$ and $β$ are constant parameters. A widely studied question is the following: When does the Hankel transform of a generating function become an $(α,β)$ Somos-4 sequence? In particular, how can $α$ and $β$ be derived for such a function? A sufficient condition for this problem has been established by Wang and Zhang. In this paper, we obtain the following three main results.
(i): We extend the Wang--Zhang sufficient condition by working over the rational function field. Then we combine this result with the Sulanke--Xin quadratic transformation to resolve all of Barry's currently unsolved $(α,β)$ Somos-4 conjectures, which arise in diverse contexts, including generalized Catalan recurrences, Riordan arrays, generalized Bernstein arrays, and elliptic curves.
(ii): We show that the odd and even subsequences of an $(α,β)$ Somos-4 sequence are again $(α,β)$ Somos-4 sequences with transformed parameters. This is employed to establish Barry's Hurwitz transform conjecture.
(iii): Using the theory of orthogonal polynomials, we prove a Hankel determinant formula and thereby prove a conjecture related to the $(α,β)$ Somos-4 sequence. In addition, we prove some conjectures on formulas for periodic Hankel determinants.
