Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of matroids need not be unimodal
We construct, over every finite field, representable matroids whose Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials are not unimodal. In particular, the conjectures that all Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of matroids are log-concave and that they are real-rooted are both false. Our examples are obtained by deleting points from finite projective geometries. More generally, we prove that, under a half-rank degree condition in each contraction quotient, the Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomial of every contraction enumerates the subspaces whose projective points lie in the corresponding deleted set, while the $Z$-polynomial agrees with that of the full projective geometry.
Bounded Bruhat intervals and affine Coxeter groups
Dyer (1991) proved that, for each fixed length $k$, only finitely many isomorphism types of Bruhat intervals occur in finite Coxeter groups. In this short paper, we prove that this result holds also for affine Coxeter groups, and moreover that this characterizes the affine groups among all infinite Coxeter groups. We also show that the coefficients of $q$ in the Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of a Coxeter group are bounded if and only if the group is finite or affine.
Special Matchings, Brenti's Conjecture, and the Combinatorial Invariance Conjecture
In this work, we settle a problem that dates back to the early 2000s. We provide a complete characterization of special matchings of arbitrary Bruhat intervals in Coxeter groups of type $A$ and apply this result to prove a conjecture of Brenti from 2003 concerning the computation of Kazhdan-Lusztig $R$-polynomials via special matchings. This yields new evidence in support of the Combinatorial Invariance Conjecture.
Band Bases as Common Triangular Bases in Cluster Algebras from Surfaces
We consider the skein algebra of an unpunctured marked surface. Thurston previously constructed its band basis topologically. We show that this band basis coincides with the common triangular basis, which is a Kazhdan-Lusztig type basis for quantum cluster algebras analogous to the dual canonical basis of quantum groups. Our result confirms a conjecture of Thurston. It also provides new cases for the existence of the common triangular basis. In addition, we discover a phenomenon where certain unknots are arranged in configurations resembling beads on a necklace.
Dual Affine Robinson-Schensted Correspondence
We introduce the dual affine Robinson-Schensted correspondence that gives a bijection between the extended affine symmetric group and tuples $(\bar{P},\bar{Q},λ,N)$, where $\bar{P}$ and $\bar{Q}$ are tabloids, $λ$ is a partition, and $N$ is an integer, subject to compatibility conditions. The construction generalizes Fomin's growth diagrams and Viennot's shadow lines for the classical Robinson-Schensted correspondence on the symmetric group, and is dual to the affine matrix ball construction as well as Shi's correspondence, in the sense that the $P$-tabloids are the same, and the $Q$-tabloids are related by affine evacuation. As a consequence, our construction also parametrizes Kazhdan-Lusztig cells in affine type $A$. We conjecture that the growth diagrams we construct admit a natural geometric realization in terms of relative positions of affine flags, similar to the interpretation given by Steinberg and van Leeuwen in the classical case.
Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of Dowling geometries
We give a concrete combinatorial interpretation of the coefficients of the Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of Dowling geometries, a family of matroids which generalizes braid matroids of types A and B. Furthermore, we interpret the coefficients of the equivariant Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials and the equivariant Z-polynomials of Dowling geometries associated to non-trivial groups with respect to their full automorphism groups.
Kazhdan-Lusztig Basis and Optimization
We describe a conjectural approach to obtaining canonical bases of the Hecke algebra at $q=1$ via continuous quadratic optimization. We focus on Specht modules $S^λ$ and proper cones inside $S^λ$ that are invariant under the action of $1+s$ for all simple reflections $s\in S$. We show that there are unique minimal and maximal cones invariant under all $1+s$. For hook shapes, two-column shapes, and partitions of the form $(n-2,2)$, we prove that the Kazhdan--Lusztig basis spans this maximal cone. More generally, we define an optimization problem over bases that are unitriangular with respect to the polytabloid basis, subject to the constraint that the operators $1+s$ act non-negatively. We prove that the feasible region forms a compact semialgebraic set, and interpret it in terms of a hierarchy of invariant cones under all $1+s$. We demonstrate that minimizing the trace of the Gram matrix uniquely recovers Young's seminormal basis. Furthermore, we verify computationally that maximization uniquely recovers the Kazhdan--Lusztig basis for all partitions of $n\leq 7$. In higher ranks, the optimization detects deviations from the Kazhdan--Lusztig basis and may favour other natural positive bases, such as the Springer basis or $p$-canonical bases. Finally, we extend this framework to irreducible representations of $\mathfrak{sl}_n$. We observe that the Gelfand--Tsetlin basis corresponds to the unique minimizer, and we conjecture that the canonical basis corresponds to the maximum in small ranks.
Billey-Type Formula for KL-Schubert Classes in Hyperbolic Cohomology
This paper studies the KL-Schubert classes defined by Kazhdan-Lusztig bases in $K$-theory and hyperbolic cohomology of flag varieties. We first establish Poincaré dualities of these classes. We then focus on Grassmannians, and establish the Billey-type formula for KL-Schubert classes in hyperbolic cohomology.
Kazhdan-Lusztig bases of parabolic Hecke algebras and applications to Schur-Weyl duality
With an eye to applications to type A and Schur-Weyl duality, we study Kazhdan-Lusztig bases for a general parabolic Hecke algebra. Parabolic Hecke algebras are idempotent subalgebras of Hecke algebras corresponding to parabolic subgroups, and for type A they coincide with the fused Hecke algebras appearing in a generalisation of the Schur-Weyl duality with the quantum group of GL(N). In this paper we investigate two different Kazhdan-Lusztig bases for parabolic Hecke algebras, together with the associated cells and the corresponding representations. We quickly specialise to type A, for which we describe the cells in terms of the RSK correspondence generalising thus the well-known description for the symmetric group. As a first application we recover the classification of irreducible representations of parabolic Hecke algebras of type A and provide a new construction of these representations. Next we turn to the Schur-Weyl duality and describe the kernel in terms of one the basis studied precedently. Moreover, we formulate some conjectures about a generator of these kernels in terms of Kazhdan-Lusztig basis elements, give some evidence and prove these conjectures in some special cases.
On factorization of matrix of Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials
Let $\mathcal{H} = \mathcal{H}(W,S)$ be the Hecke algebra of the Coxeter system $(W,S)$ over $\mathbb{Z}[q^{\pm1}]$, where $W$ is the Weyl group of a symmetrizable Kac-Moody algebra. In this paper, we show that the matrix of Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of $\mathcal{H}$ factorizes into a product of $|S|$ many matrices, each of which has entries as polynomials in $q$ with nonnegative coefficients. To achieve this goal, we use hybrid basis $TC^J$ for $J\subseteq S$ of $\mathcal{H}$, defined by Grojnowski-Haiman. The intermediate matrices in the aforementioned factorization turn out to be the transition matrices from $TC^J$-basis to $TC^I$-basis for $I\subset J$. Equivalently, these coefficients can be computed using a natural restriction map from $\mathcal{H}$ to the parabolic Hecke algebra $\mathcal{H}_J$. Moreover, following the ideas from Grojnowski-Haiman, we also give a geometric proof of the positivity of these coefficients.
Kostant cuspidal permutations
In relation to Kostant's problem for simple highest weight modules over the general linear Lie algebra, we prove a persistence result for Kostant negative consecutive patterns. Inspired by it, we introduce the notion of a Kostant cuspidal permutation as a minimal Kostant negative consecutive pattern. It is shown that Kostant cuspidality is an invariant of a Kazhdan-Lusztig left cell. We describe four infinite families of Kostant cuspidal involutions, including a complete classification of Kostant cuspidal fully commutative involutions. In particular, we show that the number of new Kostant cuspidal elements can be arbitrarily large, when the rank grows. This provides some potential explanation why Kostant's problem is hard.
Combinatorial invariance for the coefficient of $q$ in Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials
We prove the combinatorial invariance of the coefficient of $q$ in Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials for arbitrary Coxeter groups. As a result, we obtain the Combinatorial Invariance Conjecture for Bruhat intervals of length at most $6$. We also prove the Gabber-Joseph conjecture for the second-highest $\mathrm{Ext}$ group of a pair of Verma modules, as well as the combinatorial invariance of the dimension of this group.
Unitarity of highest weight Harish-Chandra modules and smoothness of Schubert varieties
Let $G_{\mathbb{R}}$ be a Lie group of Hermitian type, and $L(λ)$ a highest weight Harish-Chandra module of $G_{\mathbb{R}}$ with highest weight $λ$. In this article, we exhibit a bijection between the set of connected Dynkin subdiagrams containing the noncompact simple root and the set of unitary highest weight modules $L(-wρ-ρ)$, where $ρ$ is half the sum of positive roots. We find that $L(-wρ-ρ)$ is unitary if and only if the Schubert variety $X(w)$ is smooth. We also give the cardinality of the set of unitary highest weight modules $L(-wρ-ρ)$ for each Kazhdan-Lusztig right cell.
Kirillov-Reshetikhin Dual Equivalence Graphs
Let $U$ be a tensor product of highest weight modules of $GL_n(\mathbb C)$ corresponding to multiples of fundamental weights (i.e. rectangles). We consider three ways to stratify $U^{\otimes k}$ into components: using isotypic components of the cyclic action on tensor factors, using a generalization of the charge statistic, and using certain generalizations of Assaf's dual equivalence graphs. We conjecture that all three ways coincide, and we prove that the latter two ways coincide. The Kirillov-Reshetikhin dual equivalence graphs (KR DEGs) we introduce for this purpose are defined on $0$-weight spaces of tensor products of Kirillov-Reshetikhin crystals. They generalize Kazhdan-Lusztig dual equivalence graphs (KL DEGs) that previously appeared in the study of Kazhdan-Lusztig cells in affine type A. While the tensor products of Kirillov-Reshetikhin crystals are connected as affine crystals, the KR DEGs in general are not.
Intersection cohomology without spaces
We survey three settings in which dimensions of intersection cohomology groups of algebraic varieties provide deep combinatorial and representation-theoretic information, and computations of the groups themselves have been made using combinatorial sheaves on finite posets. These settings are (1) intersection cohomology of Schubert varieties, the associated Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials and their realizations via moment graph sheaves and Soergel bimodules; (2) intersection cohomology of toric varieties, the associated g-polynomials of convex polytopes, and their realization via the theory of intersection cohomology of fans; and (3) intersection cohomology of arrangement Schubert varieties, the associated Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of matroids, and their realization via intersection cohomology of matroids. In all three settings these constructions are valid in more general situations where the variety does not exist, leading to "intersection cohomology without spaces." We give parallel presentations of these three stories, highlighting applications to KLS-polynomials.
Inverse Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of matroids under deletion
We provide a deletion formula for the inverse Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomial and the inverse $Z$-polynomial of a matroid. Our formulas provide analogues to the deletion formulas of Braden--Vysogorets for Kazhdan--Lusztig and $Z$-polynomials. We discuss several consequences, which include closed formulas and recursions for these invariants on uniform matroids, projective geometries, glued cycles, and arbitrary matroids of corank $2$. As a relevant application of our deletion formula, we show the existence of a matroid of rank $19$ which disproves a conjecture of Xie and Zhang concerning a real-rootedness property of inverse Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomials.
Torus Actions on Matrix Schubert and Kazhdan-Lusztig Varieties, and their Links to Statistical Models
We investigate the toric geometry of two families of generalised determinantal varieties arising from permutations: Matrix Schubert varieties ($\overline{X_w}$) and Kazhdan-Lusztig varieties ($\mathcal{N}_{v,w}$). Matrix Schubert varieties can be written as $\overline{X_w} = Y_w \times \mathbb C^d$, where $d$ is maximal. We are especially interested in the structure and complexity of these varieties $Y_w$ and $\mathcal{N}_{v,w}$ under the so-called usual torus actions. In the case when $Y_w$ is toric, we provide a full characterisation of the simple reflections $s_i$ that render ${Y_{w \cdot s_i}}$ toric, as well as the corresponding changes to the weight cone. For Kazhdan-Lusztig varieties, we consider how moving one of the two permutations $v,w$ along a chain in the Bruhat poset affects their complexity. Additionally, we study the complexity of these varieties, for permutations $v$ and $w$ of a specific structure. Finally, we consider the links between these determinantal varieties and two classes of statistical models; namely conditional independence and quasi-independence models.
Lattice Models for Double Whittaker Polynomials and Motivic Chern Classes
We will describe solvable lattice models whose partition functions depend on two sets of variables, $x_1,\cdots,x_n$ and $y_1, y_2, \cdots $ that have different connections with the representation theory of $\text{GL}(n,F)$ where $F$ is a nonarchimedean local field. If the boundary conditions are chosen in one way, they are essentially the Motivic Chern classes that were used very effectively by Aluffi, Mihalcea, Schürmann and Su (AMSS) to study such problems. In particular, using this specialization we can obtain deformations $r_{u,v}$ of the Kazhdan-Lusztig R-polynomials that were used by Bump, Nakasuji and Naruse to study matrix coefficients of intertwining operators (introduced by Casselman). Thus we are able see that the recursion formula for the $r_{u,v}$ is a reflection of the Yang-Baxter equation. On the other hand, with more general boundary conditions, specializing the parameters $y_i\to 0$ we recover colored lattice models that were previously used by Brubaker, Buciumas, Bump and Gustafsson to represent Iwahori Whittaker functions on $GL(n,F)$. Thus we term the resulting two-variable-set family of functions as ``double Whittaker polynomials.''
Combinatorial proof of a permuted basement Macdonald polynomial identity
A well-known and fundamental property of the Macdonald polynomials $P_λ(x;q,t)$ is their invariance under the transformation sending $(q,t)$ to $(q^{-1},t^{-1})$. Recently, Concha and Lapointe showed that this property extends in an interesting, nontrivial way to an identity for partially symmetric Macdonald polynomials. Their identity played a key role in the work of Bechtloff Weising and Orr linking partially symmetric Macdonald polynomials to parabolic flag Hilbert schemes. In this paper, we refine the Concha-Lapointe identity to a sub-family of Alexandersson's permuted basement Macdonald polynomials and give a combinatorial proof of the refined identity. We show also that the Concha-Lapointe identity is equivalent to the assertion that (normalized) partially symmetric Macdonald polynomials are fixed under the Kazhdan-Lusztig involution.
Introduction to the Cohomology of the Flag Variety
One hundred years ago, Hilbert gave a list of important open problems in mathematics. His 15th problem asked for the development of a rigorous calculus explaining Schubert's enumerative results for intersecting varieties defined by rank conditions on vector spaces. Today by way of many contributions in algebraic topology, geometry, and combinatorics, we consider this solved. Yet, deep questions remain about the subtleties of actually carrying out the process. In this chapter, we hope to summarize the rigorous development of what has become known as Schubert calculus, with an eye toward computation. We discuss Grassmannians and flag varieties and their cohomology rings, following Monk's constructive algebraic approach. We derive formulas for Schur and Schubert polynomials, which represent cohomology classes of Schubert varieties. We hint at the vast literature in this area and point to the other references in the Handbook for more information. Finally, we identify open problems that remain a challenge even with modern tools at our fingertips in hopes of inspiring further contributions in this fascinating field.
This is intended as the first chapter of a book entitled "Handbook of Combinatorial Algebraic Geometry: Subvarieties of the Flag Variety", a compendium of topics in the area. The book is being edited by Erik Insko, Martha Precup, and Ed Richmond. In addition to this introductory chapter, others will cover more advanced topics such as Kazhdan-Lusztig varieties, generalized smooth Schubert varieties, Richardson varieties and positroid varieties, spherical and torus orbit closures, spanning line configurations, different types of Hessenberg varieties, and generalizations to Kac-Moody flag varieties, each written by experts in those areas. We hope you enjoy this chapter enough to seek out the others, and that you send us any comments or corrections you find as you read this article!
