Real-rootedness of the $Z$-polynomials of sparse paving matroids and strict interlacing for uniform matroids
We prove that the $Z$-polynomial of every sparse paving matroid has only negative real zeros, confirming the real-rootedness conjecture of Proudfoot, Xu, and Young for this class. We also prove that, for each fixed positive corank, the $Z$-polynomials of uniform matroids in consecutive ranks strictly interlace. Our approach is to prove real-rootedness of the corresponding $γ$-polynomials for sparse paving matroids and their strict interlacing for uniform matroids, and then transfer both properties to the corresponding $Z$-polynomials.
Graded Betti numbers of graded Möbius algebras of uniform matroids
Graded Möbius algebras were a key tool in the proof of the Dowling-Wilson Top Heavy Conjecture. They are commutative algebras whose Hilbert functions recover the Whitney numbers of the second kind, i.e. the number of flats of a given rank. The graded Betti numbers of the defining ideal of a graded Möbius algebra refine the Hilbert function and describe its minimal free resolution. In this paper we derive precise formulas for the graded Betti numbers of the defining ideals of graded Möbius algebra for any uniform matroid. We also study when the graded Möbius algebra of an arbitrary matroid is linearly presented.

Orlik--Solomon sheaf homology of geometric lattices
We associate the Orlik--Solomon sheaf with a finite geometric lattice and compute its sheaf homology. We show that this homology concentrates in top degree, admitting a convolution-type decomposition into a principal ideal OS piece tensoring with a principal filter complement poset homology. Applications to uniform matroids provide interesting representations of symmetric groups.

The singular cohomology ring of a uniform matroid: combinatorics and Lefschetz properties
The singular cohomology ring of a matroid is an algebraic invariant which generalizes the Chow ring of a matroid. We study combinatorial and Lefschetz properties of the singular cohomology ring of a uniform matroid. Combinatorially, we construct an explicit basis for the singular cohomology ring in terms of Koszul homology. From this basis we derive multiple formulas for the Hodge numbers of the cohomology ring that recover and extend known formulas for the Chow polynomial of a uniform matroid. We also use this basis to show that the singular cohomology ring of a uniform matroid satisfies the "quasi-projective strong Lefschetz property" -- a slight weakening of the Hard Lefschetz property found in the Chow ring of a matroid.

Representability of $q$-matroids via rank-metric codes
Multilinear representability extends classical linear representability of matroids by assigning subspaces, rather than vectors, to ground elements. This notion is closely related to almost affine codes. In this paper, we introduce and study a $q$-analogue of multilinear representability for $q$-matroids, motivated by known connections between $q$-matroids, classical matroids, and rank-metric codes. We define $m$-multilinear representability in terms of almost affine matrix rank-metric codes satisfying a natural divisibility condition. We prove that nontrivial uniform $q$-matroids admit no purely multilinear representations, and we derive necessary conditions for multilinear representations of almost uniform $q$-matroids. We further show that the non-Pappus $q$-matroid, if multilinearly representable, must have block size at least $9$. Finally, we prove that no rank-$2$ $q$-matroid on $\mathbb{F}_2^4$ admits a purely $m$-multilinear representation for $1<m<4$, and we classify pure multilinearity for all $q$-matroids on $\mathbb{F}_2^3$ and $\mathbb{F}_2^4$ in the corresponding ranges. At present, no example is known of a purely multilinear $q$-matroid.
Stationary Online Contention Resolution Schemes
Online contention resolution schemes (OCRSs) are a central tool in Bayesian online selection and resource allocation: they convert fractional ex-ante relaxations into feasible online policies while preserving each marginal probability up to a constant factor. Despite their importance, designing (near) optimal OCRSs is often technically challenging, and many existing constructions rely on indirect reductions to prophet inequalities and LP duality, resulting in algorithms that are difficult to interpret or implement. In this paper, we introduce "stationary online contention resolution schemes (S-OCRSs)," a permutation-invariant class of OCRSs in which the distribution of the selected feasible set is independent of arrival order. We show that S-OCRSs admit an exact distributional characterization together with a universal online implementation. We then develop a general `maximum-entropy' approach to construct and analyze S-OCRSs, reducing the design of online policies to constructing suitable distributions over feasible sets. This yields a new technical framework for designing simple and possibly improved OCRSs. We demonstrate the power of this framework across several canonical feasibility environments. In particular, we obtain an improved $(3-\sqrt{5})/2$-selectable OCRS for bipartite matchings, attaining the independence benchmark conjectured to be optimal and yielding the best known prophet inequality for this setting. We also obtain a $1-\sqrt{2/(πk)} + O(1/k)$-selectable OCRS for $k$-uniform matroids and a simple, explicit $1/2$-selectable OCRS for weakly Rayleigh matroids (including all $\mathbb{C}$-representable matroids such as graphic and laminar). While these guarantees match the best known bounds, our framework also yields concrete and systematic constructions, providing transparent algorithms in settings where previous OCRSs were implicit or technically involved.

On Representing Matroids via Modular Independence
We study a matrix-based notion of matroid representation over local commutative rings obtained by replacing linear independence with modular independence. This construction always defines an independence system, though not necessarily a matroid. Under a mild nilpotent hypothesis, we show that chain rings are exactly the local rings for which the minimal number of generators is monotone on finitely generated submodules, and over commutative chain rings we obtain a criterion for the associated independence system to be a matroid. For codes over finite commutative chain rings, we identify puncturing with deletion, show that shortening agrees with contraction under a contractibility hypothesis, and establish duality for free codes. We further derive bounds for simple and uniform matroids, prove that the uniform matroid $U_{2, n}$ is representable if and only if the size $n$ is at most the sum of the cardinalities of the local ring and its unique maximal ideal, and show that all excluded minors for $\mathbb{F}_{4}$-representability are representable over $\mathbb{Z}/4\mathbb{Z}$. The examples also include ring representations of matroids not representable over any field, such as the Vámos matroid over $\mathbb{Z}/8\mathbb{Z}$.

Equivariant inverse $Z$-polynomials of matroids
Motivated by the notion of the inverse $Z$-polynomial introduced by Ferroni, Matherne, Stevens, and Vecchi, we study the equivariant inverse $Z$-polynomial of a matroid equipped with a finite group. We prove that the coefficients of the equivariant inverse $Z$-polynomials are honest representations and that these polynomials are palindromic. Explicit formulas are obtained for uniform matroids equipped with the symmetric group. The corresponding formulas for $q$-niform matroids are derived using the Comparison Theorem for unipotent representations. For arbitrary equivariant paving matroids, explicit expressions are obtained by relating the polynomials of a matroid to those of its relaxation. We show that these polynomials are equivariantly unimodal and strongly inductively log-concave for both uniform and $q$-niform matroids. Motivated by the properties of equivariant $Z$-polynomials, we conjecture that the coefficients of the equivariant inverse $Z$-polynomials are equivariantly unimodal and strongly equivariantly log-concave.

The rank-nullity ring of a matroid
We introduce the rank-nullity ring of a matroid $M$, which is a subring of the Chow ring of the permutahedral toric variety. This subring contains the tautological Chern classes of $M$, a fact we deduce from a highly symmetric formula for these classes. When the matroid $M$ is a uniform matroid, the rank-nullity ring coincides with the subring of $S_n$-invariants of the Chow ring of the permutahedral toric variety. In this case, we compute its Hilbert function explicitly and provide a Gröbner basis for the ideal of relations among its generators.

Excluding a line from positroids
For all positive integers $\ell$ and $r$, we determine the maximum number of elements of a simple rank-$r$ positroid without the rank-$2$ uniform matroid $U_{2,\ell+2}$ as a minor, and characterize the matroids with the maximum number of elements. This result continues a long line of research into upper bounds on the number of elements of matroids from various classes that forbid $U_{2,\ell+2}$ as a minor. This is the first paper to study positroids in this context, and it suggests methods to study similar problems for other classes of matroids, such as gammoids or base-orderable matroids.
Tropical KP Theory on Banana Curves
The Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) equation is the cornerstone of integrable systems, whose solutions reflect deep connections in algebraic geometry. Banana curves are reducible rational curves obtained as a degeneration of hyperelliptic curves. In this work, we relate the family of KP multi-solitons arising from banana curves together with non-special divisors of fixed degree to the combinatorics of the tropical theta divisor of the curve. We describe the Voronoi and Delaunay polytopes and show that the latter are combinatorially equivalent to uniform matroid polytopes. As a consequence, the combinatorics of the tropical theta divisor canonically encodes the matroid and Grassmannian structures underlying the associated KP multi-soliton solutions. We define the Hirota variety of a banana graph, which parametrizes all tau functions arising from such a graph. Starting from the matroid arising from Delaunay polytopes and the periods in the tropical limit, we construct an explicit parametrization of this variety which realizes the tau function as a multi-soliton. Our framework specializes naturally to real and positive settings.

Chow polynomials of rank-uniform labeled posets
We introduce and develop the theory of UMEL-shellable posets. These are posets equipped with an edge-lexicographical labeling satisfying certain uniformity and monotonicity properties. This framework encompasses classical families of combinatorial geometries, including uniform matroids, projective and affine geometries, braid matroids of type A and B, and all Dowling geometries. It also comprises all rank-uniform supersolvable lattices, and therefore also all rank-uniform distributive lattices. Our main result establishes real-rootedness phenomena for the Chow polynomials, the augmented Chow polynomials, and the chain polynomials associated with those posets, thus making simultaneous progress towards conjectures by Ferroni--Schröter, Huh--Stevens, and Athanasiadis--Kalampogia-Evangelinou. In the special case of lattices of flats of matroids, the (augmented) Chow polynomials coincide with the Hilbert--Poincaré series of the Chow ring associated to the smooth and generally noncompact toric varieties of the (augmented) Bergman fan of the matroid, whereas the chain polynomial encodes the Hilbert--Poincaré series of the Stanley--Reisner ring of the Bergman complex of the matroid. Therefore, these real-rootedness results are tightly linked to the study of these algebro-geometric structures in matroid theory.
Chow classes of matroids and standard Young tableaux
We study the Chow classes of arbitrary matroids in the Grassmannian. We develop a new combinatorial approach for computing them, by first focusing on snake matroids and then extending our results via valuativity to any matroid. Our main contribution identifies the Poincaré dual of the Chow class of a snake matroid with a specific ribbon Schur function, providing an explicit formula for its coefficients in the Schubert basis as the number of standard Young tableaux of a given shape with a prescribed descent set. This agrees with a formula by Klyachko for the uniform matroid. As consequences, we recover and simplify classical results such as Gessel and Viennot's enumeration of permutations with fixed descent sets, and formulas for the volume of lattice path matroids. Furthermore, we demonstrate the power of our findings by proving that certain Schubert coefficients are positive for all connected paving matroids.
Excluding a Line Minor via Design Matrices and Column Number Bounds for the Circuit Imbalance Measure
For a real matrix $A \in \mathbb{R}^{d \times n}$ with non-collinear columns, we show that $n \leq O(d^4 κ_A)$ where $κ_A$ is the \emph{circuit imbalance measure} of $A$. The circuit imbalance measure $κ$ is a real analogue of $Δ$-modularity for integer matrices, satisfying $κ_A \leq Δ_A$ for integer $A$. The circuit imbalance measure has numerous applications in the context of linear programming (see Ekbatani, Natura and V{é}gh (2022) for a survey). Our result generalizes the $O(d^4 Δ_A)$ bound of Averkov and Schymura (2023) for integer matrices and provides the first polynomial bound holding for all parameter ranges on real matrices. To derive our result, similar to the strategy of Geelen, Nelson and Walsh (2021) for $Δ$-modular matrices, we show that real representable matroids induced by $κ$-bounded matrices are minor closed and exclude a rank $2$ uniform matroid on $O(κ)$ elements as a minor (also known as a line of length $O(κ)$). As our main technical contribution, we show that any simple rank $d$ complex representable matroid which excludes a line of length $l$ has at most $O(d^4 l)$ elements. This complements the tight bound of $(l-3)\binom{d}{2} + d$ for $l \geq 4$, of Geelen, Nelson and Walsh which holds when the rank $d$ is sufficiently large compared to $l$ (at least doubly exponential in $l$).
On the irreducibility and monodromy of Tutte polynomials
We study algebraic properties of the Tutte polynomial of a matroid and its generalizations to other combinatorially defined bivariate polynomial invariants. Merino, de Mier and Noy showed that the Tutte polynomial of a connected matroid is irreducible, and Bohn, Cameron and M{ü}ller conjectured the stronger property that the Galois/monodromy group of the Tutte polynomial of a connected matroid of rank r is isomorphic to the full symmetric group on r letters. First, we generalize the result of Merino-de Mier-Noy to the context of general ranked sets by exploiting a recent translation of the Brylawski relations, satisfied by the coefficients of the Tutte polynomial, into a functional identity. Second, we give the first confirmation of the conjecture of Bohn-Cameron-M{ü}ller for infinite families of connected matroids, including the cycle graphs and the uniform matroids. Moreover, we apply the large sieve to obtain a probabilistic statement showing that suitable linear combinations of coprime Tutte polynomials generically satisfy the conjecture.
Inverse Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of matroids under deletion
We provide a deletion formula for the inverse Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomial and the inverse $Z$-polynomial of a matroid. Our formulas provide analogues to the deletion formulas of Braden--Vysogorets for Kazhdan--Lusztig and $Z$-polynomials. We discuss several consequences, which include closed formulas and recursions for these invariants on uniform matroids, projective geometries, glued cycles, and arbitrary matroids of corank $2$. As a relevant application of our deletion formula, we show the existence of a matroid of rank $19$ which disproves a conjecture of Xie and Zhang concerning a real-rootedness property of inverse Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomials.

Matchings in Matroids over Abelian Groups, III
In an abelian group $G$, a \emph{matching} is a bijection $f\colon A\to B$ between finite subsets $A,B\subseteq G$ such that $a+f(a)\notin A$ for all $a\in A$. We say that $G$ has the \emph{matching property} if every pair of finite subsets $A,B\subseteq G$ with $|A|=|B|$ and $0\notin B$ admits such a matching. This paper develops matroidal analogues of classical results on group matchings. By embedding matroid ground sets in $G$, we introduce base matchings between matroid bases, recovering the group-theoretic setting in the uniform case, and derive structural and combinatorial criteria for their existence. Our methods blend techniques from matroid theory, group theory, and additive number theory. Our main focus is on paving matroids, a class conjectured to constitute asymptotically almost all matroids. We prove symmetric self-matchability for all paving matroids, extend asymmetric results via the hyperplane-nullity parameter, and connect stressed hyperplanes to matchability through relaxation, bridging paving and uniform matroids. This paper continues a line of research initiated in [3,4], yet is written to be self-contained and may be read independently.

Chow polynomials of simplicial posets with positive $h$-vector are real-rooted
We prove that a finite graded simplicial poset with a top element added has real-rooted Chow and augmented Chow polynomials whenever it has a positive $h$-vector. This class of posets include Cohen-Macaulay simplicial posets and in particular lattices of flats of uniform matroids.

Characterizations of certain matroids by maximizing valuative invariants
Luis Ferroni and Alex Fink recently introduced a polytope of all unlabeled matroids of rank $r$ on $n$ elements, and they showed that the vertices of this polytope come from matroids that can be characterized by maximizing a sequence of valuative invariants. We prove that a number of the matroids that they conjectured to yield vertices indeed do (these include cycle matroids of complete graphs, projective geometries, and Dowling geometries), and we give additional examples (including truncations of cycle matroids of complete graphs, Bose-Burton geometries, and binary and free spikes with tips). We prove a special case of a conjecture of Ferroni and Fink by showing that direct sums of uniform matroids yield vertices of their polytope, and we prove a similar result for direct sums whose components are in certain restricted classes of extremal matroids.
Interaction between skew-representability, tensor products, extension properties, and rank inequalities
Skew-representable matroids form a fundamental class in matroid theory, bridging combinatorics and linear algebra. They play an important role in areas such as coding theory, optimization, and combinatorial geometry, where linear structure is crucial for both theoretical insights and algorithmic applications. Since deciding skew-representability is computationally intractable, much effort has been focused on identifying necessary or sufficient conditions for a matroid to be skew-representable. In this paper, we introduce a novel approach to studying skew-representability and structural properties of matroids and polymatroid functions via tensor products. We provide a characterization of skew-representable matroids, as well as of those representable over skew fields of a given prime characteristic, in terms of tensor products. As an algorithmic consequence, we show that deciding skew-representability, or representability over a skew field of fixed prime characteristic, is co-recursively enumerable: that is, certificates of non-skew-representability -- in general or over a fixed prime characteristic -- can be verified. We also prove that every rank-3 matroid admits a tensor product with any uniform matroid and give a construction yielding the unique freest tensor product in this setting. Finally, as an application of the tensor product framework, we give a new proof of Ingleton's inequality and, more importantly, derive the first known linear rank inequality for folded skew-representable matroids that does not follow from the common information property.
