The essential bound of a polymatroid and its applications to excluded minor problems
The singleton and doubleton minors of a polymatroid $ρ$ encode a surprising amount of information about the structural complexity of $ρ$. Given any polymatroid $ρ$, we can subtract from it a maximally-separated polymatroid, resulting in a $k$-polymatroid. We introduce a notion of boundedness for $ρ$ that corresponds to $k$. Our results provide an organized framework for thinking about polymatroid excluded minor problems. In particular, let $\mathcal{C}$ denote the minor-closed class of matroids characterized by excluding the uniform matroid $U_{2,b}$ and its dual $U_{b-2,b}$. We show that the list of excluded minors for the class of $k$-polymatroids whose $k$-natural matroids are in $\mathcal{C}$ is finite. We also investigate the more general case of excluding $U_{a,b}$ and its dual $U_{b-a,b}$.
Characterizing positroid quotients of uniform matroids
We study two-step flag positroids $(P_1, P_2)$, where $P_1$ is a quotient of $P_{2}$. We provide a complete characterization of all two-step flag positroids that contain a uniform matroid, extending and completing a partial result by Benedetti, Chávez, and Jiménez. To contrast general positroids with the special case of lattice path matroids, we show that the containment relations of Grassmann necklaces and conecklaces fully characterize flag lattice path matroids, but are insufficient for general flag positroids. Additionally, we prove that the decorated permutations of any elementary quotient pair are related by a cyclic shift, resolving a conjecture of Benedetti, Chávez and Jiménez.
Ehrhart Bounds for Panhandle and Paving Matroids Through Enumeration of Chain Forests
Panhandle matroids are a specific family of lattice-path matroids corresponding to panhandle-shaped Ferrers diagrams. Their matroid polytopes are the subpolytopes carved from a hypersimplex to form matroid polytopes of paving matroids. It has been an active area of research to determine which families of matroid polytopes are Ehrhart positive. We prove Ehrhart positivity for panhandle matroid polytopes, thus confirming a conjecture of Hanely, Martin, McGinnis, Miyata, Nasr, Vindas-Meléndez, and Yin (2023). Another standing conjecture posed by Ferroni (2022) asserts that the coefficients of the Ehrhart polynomial of a connected matroid are bounded above by those of the corresponding uniform matroid. We prove Ferroni's conjecture for paving matroids -- a class conjectured to asymptotically contain all matroids. These results follow from purely enumerative statements, the main one being conjectured by Hanely et. al concerning the enumeration of a certain class of ordered chain forests.
Foundations of matroids -- Part 2: Further theory, examples, and computational methods
In this sequel to "Foundations of matroids - Part 1", we establish several presentations of the foundation of a matroid in terms of small building blocks. For example, we show that the foundation of a matroid M is the colimit of the foundations of all embedded minors of M isomorphic to one of the matroids $U^2_4$, $U^2_5$, $U^3_5$, $C_5$, $C_5^\ast$, $U^2_4\oplus U^1_2$, $F_7$, $F_7^\ast$, and we show that this list is minimal. We establish similar minimal lists of building blocks for the classes of 2-connected and 3-connected matroids. We also establish a presentation for the foundation of a matroid in terms of its lattice of flats. Each of these presentations provides a useful method to compute the foundation of certain matroids, as we illustrate with a number of concrete examples. Combining these techniques with other results in the literature, we are able to compute the foundations of several interesting classes of matroids, including whirls, rank-2 uniform matroids, and projective geometries. In an appendix, we catalogue various 'small' pastures which occur as foundations of matroids, most of which were found with the assistance of a computer, and we discuss some of their interesting properties.
Chern Numbers of Matroids
We define Chern numbers of a matroid. These numbers are obtained when intersecting appropriate matroid Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson cycles defined by López de Medrano, Rincón, and Shaw. We prove that when a matroid arises from a complex hyperplane arrangement the Chern numbers of the matroid correspond to the Chern numbers of the log cotangent bundle.
A matroid of rank 3 has two Chern numbers. We prove that they are positive and that their ratio is bounded by 3, which is analogous to the Bogomolov-Miyaoka-Yau inequality. If the matroid is orientable, we generalize a result of Eterović, Figuera, and Urzúa to prove that the ratio is bounded above by 5/2. Finally, we give a formula for the Chern numbers of the uniform matroid of any rank.
Almost generalized uniform matroids and excluded minors
We establish that matroids characterized by the Tutte polynomial $\sum_{i,j\ge 0}t_{i,j}x^iy^j$ with coefficients $t_{i,j}$ vanishing for $(i,j)\ge (k,l)$ precisely coincide with $(k,l)$-uniform matroids. This characterization implies that almost $(k,l)$-uniform matroids are exactly matroids with $t_{k,l}\le 1$ and $t_{i,j}=0$ if $(i,j)>(k,l)$. We also characterize excluded minors of almost $(k,l)$-uniform matroids in terms of Tutte polynomial coefficients. Finally, we construct an infinite family of excluded minors of almost $(k,l)$-uniform matroids which extend previously known cases of almost uniform and almost paving matroids.
Induced log-concavity of equivariant matroid invariants
Inspired by the notion of equivariant log-concavity, we introduce the concept of induced log-concavity for a sequence of representations of a finite group. For an equivariant matroid equipped with a symmetric group action or a finite general linear group action, we transform the problem of proving the induced log-concavity of matroid invariants to that of proving the Schur positivity of symmetric functions. We prove the induced log-concavity of the equivariant Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of $q$-niform matroids equipped with the action of a finite general linear group, as well as that of the equivariant Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of uniform matroids equipped with the action of a symmetric group.
As a consequence of the former, we obtain the log-concavity of Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of $q$-niform matroids, thus providing further positive evidence for Elias, Proudfoot and Wakefield's log-concavity conjecture on the matroid Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials. From the latter we obtain the log-concavity of Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of uniform matroids, which was recently proved by Xie and Zhang by using a computer algebra approach. We also establish the induced log-concavity of the equivariant characteristic polynomials and the equivariant inverse Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials for $q$-niform matroids and uniform matroids.

Matroidal entropy functions are entropy functions in the form $\mathbf{h} = \log v \cdot \mathbf{r}_M$ , where $v \ge 2$ is an integer and $\mathbf{r}_M$ is the rank function of a matroid $M$. They can be applied into capacity characterization and code construction of information theory problems such as network coding, secret sharing, index coding and locally repairable code. In this paper, by constructing the variable strength arrays of some matroid operations, we characterized matroidal entropy functions induced by regular matroids and some matroids with the same p-characteristic set as uniform matroid $U_{2,4}$.
Matroid Horn functions
Hypergraph Horn functions were introduced as a subclass of Horn functions that can be represented by a collection of circular implication rules. These functions possess distinguished structural and computational properties. In particular, their characterizations in terms of implicate-duality and the closure operator provide extensions of matroid duality and the Mac Lane-Steinitz exchange property of matroid closure, respectively.
In the present paper, we introduce a subclass of hypergraph Horn functions that we call matroid Horn functions. We provide multiple characterizations of matroid Horn functions in terms of their canonical and complete CNF representations. We also study the Boolean minimization problem for this class, where the goal is to find a minimum size representation of a matroid Horn function given by a CNF representation. While there are various ways to measure the size of a CNF, we focus on the number of circuits and circuit clauses. We determine the size of an optimal representation for binary matroids, and give lower and upper bounds in the uniform case. For uniform matroids, we show a strong connection between our problem and Turán systems that might be of independent combinatorial interest.

We study the Hilbert series of four objects arising in the Chow-theoretic and Kazhdan-Lusztig framework of matroids. These are, respectively, the Hilbert series of the Chow ring, the augmented Chow ring, the intersection cohomology module, and its stalk at the empty flat. We develop a parallelism between the Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomial of a matroid and the Hilbert series of its Chow ring. This extends to a parallelism between the $Z$-polynomial of a matroid and the Hilbert series of its augmented Chow ring. This suggests to bring ideas from one framework to the other. Our two main motivations are the real-rootedness conjecture for all of these polynomials, and the problem of computing them. We provide several intrinsic definitions of these invariants; also, by leveraging that they are valuations under matroid polytope subdivisions, we deduce a fast way for computing them for a large class of matroids. Uniform matroids are a case of combinatorial interest; we link the resulting polynomials with certain real-rooted families such as the (binomial) Eulerian polynomials, and we settle a conjecture of Hameister, Rao, and Simpson. Furthermore, we prove the real-rootedness of the Hilbert series of the augmented Chow rings of uniform matroids via a result of Haglund and Zhang; and in addition, we prove a version of a conjecture of Gedeon in the Chow setting: uniform matroids maximize coefficient-wisely these polynomials for matroids with fixed rank and size. By relying on the nonnegativity of the Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials and the semi-small decompositions of Braden, Huh, Matherne, Proudfoot, and Wang, we strengthen the unimodality of the Hilbert series of Chow rings, augmented Chow rings, and intersection cohomologies to $γ$-positivity, a property for palindromic polynomials that lies between unimodality and real-rootedness; this settles a conjecture of Ferroni, Nasr, and Vecchi.

Let $M$ be an arbitrary matroid with circuits $\mathcal{C}(M)$. We propose a definition of a derived matroid $δM$ that has as its ground set $\mathcal{C}(M)$. Unlike previous attempts of such a definition, our definition applies to arbitrary matroids, and is completely combinatorial. We prove that the rank of $δM$ is bounded from above by $|M|-r(M)$, that it is connected if and only if $M$ is connected. We compute examples including the derived matroids of uniform matroids, the Vámos matroid and the graphical matroid $M(K_4)$. We formulate conjectures relating our construction to previous definitions of derived matroids.

The aim of this work is to use linear programming and polyhedral geometry to prove a duality formula for the ic-resurgence of edge ideals. We show that the ic-resurgence of the edge ideal $I$ of a clutter $\mathcal{C}$ and the ic-resurgence of the edge ideal $I^\vee$ of the blocker $\mathcal{C}^\vee$ of $\mathcal{C}$ coincide. If $\mathcal{C}$ is the clutter of bases of certain uniform matroids, we recover a formula for the resurgence of $I$, and if $\mathcal{C}$ is a connected non-bipartite graph with a perfect matching, we show a formula for the Waldschmidt constant of $I^\vee$.

We conduct a systematic study of the Ehrhart theory of certain slices of rectangular prisms. Our polytopes are generalizations of the hypersimplex and are contained in the larger class of polypositroids introduced by Lam and Postnikov; moreover, they coincide with polymatroids satisfying the strong exchange property up to an affinity. We give a combinatorial formula for all the Ehrhart coefficients in terms of the number of weighted permutations satisfying certain compatibility properties. This result proves that all these polytopes are Ehrhart positive. Additionally, via an extension of a result by Early and Kim, we give a combinatorial interpretation for all the coefficients of the $h^*$-polynomial. All of our results provide a combinatorial understanding of the Hilbert functions and the $h$-vectors of all algebras of Veronese type, a problem that had remained elusive up to this point. A variety of applications are discussed, including expressions for the volumes of these slices of prisms as weighted combinations of Eulerian numbers; some extensions of Laplace's result on the combinatorial interpretation of the volume of the hypersimplex; a multivariate generalization of the flag Eulerian numbers and refinements; and a short proof of the Ehrhart positivity of the independence polytope of all uniform matroids.
Ehrhart Theory of Paving and Panhandle Matroids

We show that the base polytope $P_M$ of any paving matroid $M$ can be systematically obtained from a hypersimplex by slicing off certain subpolytopes, namely base polytopes of lattice path matroids corresponding to panhandle-shaped Ferrers diagrams. We calculate the Ehrhart polynomials of these matroids and consequently write down the Ehrhart polynomial of $P_M$, starting with Katzman's formula for the Ehrhart polynomial of a hypersimplex. The method builds on and generalizes Ferroni's work on sparse paving matroids. Combinatorially, our construction corresponds to constructing a uniform matroid from a paving matroid by iterating the operation of stressed-hyperplane relaxation introduced by Ferroni, Nasr, and Vecchi, which generalizes the standard matroid-theoretic notion of circuit-hyperplane relaxation. We present evidence that panhandle matroids are Ehrhart positive and describe a conjectured combinatorial formula involving chain forests and Eulerian numbers from which Ehrhart positivity of panhandle matroids will follow. As an application of the main result, we calculate the Ehrhart polynomials of matroids associated with Steiner systems and finite projective planes, and show that they depend only on their design-theoretic parameters: for example, while projective planes of the same order need not have isomorphic matroids, their base polytopes must be Ehrhart equivalent.

In this paper, we give a formula for the number of lattice points in the dilations of Schubert matroid polytopes. As applications, we obtain the Ehrhart polynomials of uniform and minimal matroids as special cases, and give a recursive formula for the Ehrhart polynomials of $(a,b)$-Catalan matroids. Ferroni showed that uniform and minimal matroids are Ehrhart positive. We show that all sparse paving Schubert matroids are Ehrhart positive and their Ehrhart polynomials are coefficient-wisely bounded by those of minimal and uniform matroids. This confirms a conjecture of Ferroni for the case of sparse paving Schubert matroids. Furthermore, we introduce notched rectangle matroids, which include minimal matroids, sparse paving Schubert matroids and panhandle matroids. We show that three subfamilies of notched rectangle matroids are Ehrhart positive, and conjecture that all notched rectangle matroids are Ehrhart positive.
Biobjective Optimization Problems on Matroids with Binary Costs

Like most multiobjective combinatorial optimization problems, biobjective optimization problems on matroids are in general intractable and their corresponding decision problems are in general NP-hard. In this paper, we consider biobjective optimization problems on matroids where one of the objective functions is restricted to binary cost coefficients. We show that in this case the problem has a connected efficient set with respect to a natural definition of a neighborhood structure and hence, can be solved efficiently using a neighborhood search approach. This is, to the best of our knowledge, the first non-trivial problem on matroids where connectedness of the efficient set can be established.
The theoretical results are validated by numerical experiments with biobjective minimum spanning tree problems (graphic matroids) and with biobjective knapsack problems with a cardinality constraint (uniform matroids). In the context of the minimum spanning tree problem, coloring all edges with cost 0 green and all edges with cost 1 red leads to an equivalent problem where we want to simultaneously minimize one general objective and the number of red edges (which defines the second objective) in a Pareto sense.
Ehrhart polynomials of rank two matroids

Over a decade ago De Loera, Haws and Köppe conjectured that Ehrhart polynomials of matroid polytopes have only positive coefficients and that the coefficients of the corresponding $h^*$-polynomials form a unimodal sequence. The first of these intensively studied conjectures has recently been disproved by the first author who gave counterexamples in all ranks greater or equal to three. In this article we complete the picture by showing that Ehrhart polynomials of matroids of lower rank have indeed only positive coefficients. Moreover, we show that they are coefficient-wise bounded by the Ehrhart polynomials of minimal and uniform matroids. We furthermore address the second conjecture by proving that $h^*$-polynomials of matroid polytopes of sparse paving matroids of rank two are real-rooted and therefore have log-concave and unimodal coefficients. In particular, this shows that the $h^*$-polynomial of the second hypersimplex is real-rooted thereby strengthening a result of De Loera, Haws and Köppe.

Motivated by the concepts of the inverse Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomial and the equivariant Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomial, Proudfoot defined the equivariant inverse Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomial for a matroid. In this paper, we show that the equivariant inverse Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomial of a matroid is very useful for determining its equivariant Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials, and we determine the equivariant inverse Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials for Boolean matroids and uniform matroids. As an application, we give a new proof of Gedeon, Proudfoot and Young's formula for the equivariant Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of uniform matroids. Inspired by Lee, Nasr and Radcliffe's combinatorial interpretation for the ordinary Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of uniform matroids, we further present a new formula for the corresponding equivariant Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials.

We consider a $q$-analogue of abstract simplicial complexes, called $q$-complexes, and discuss the notion of shellability for such complexes. It is shown that $q$-complexes formed by independent subspaces of a $q$-matroid are shellable. Further, we explicitly determine the homology of $q$-complexes corresponding to uniform $q$-matroids. We also outline some partial results concerning the determination of homology of arbitrary shellable $q$-complexes..

A matroid is uniform if and only if it has no minor isomorphic to $U_{1,1}\oplus U_{0,1}$ and is paving if and only if it has no minor isomorphic to $U_{2,2}\oplus U_{0,1}$. This paper considers, more generally, when a matroid $M$ has no $U_{k,k}\oplus U_{0,\ell}$-minor for a fixed pair of positive integers $(k,\ell)$. Calling such a matroid $(k,\ell)$-uniform, it is shown that this is equivalent to the condition that every rank-$(r(M)-k)$ flat of $M$ has nullity less than $\ell$. Generalising a result of Rajpal, we prove that for any pair $(k,\ell)$ of positive integers and prime power $q$, only finitely many simple cosimple $GF(q)$-representable matroids are \kl-uniform. Consequently, if Rota's Conjecture holds, then for every prime power $q$, there exists a pair $(k_q,\ell_q)$ of positive integers such that every excluded minor of $GF(q)$-representability is $(k_q,\ell_q)$-uniform. We also determine all binary $(2,2)$-uniform matroids and show the maximally $3$-connected members to be $Z_5\backslash t, AG(4,2), AG(4,2)^*$ and a particular self-dual matroid $P_{10}$. Combined with results of Acketa and Rajpal, this completes the list of binary $(k,\ell)$-uniform matroids for which $k+\ell\leq 4$.
