Real-rooted Eulerian polynomials from permutations, words, and paths
We study six Eulerian-type polynomial families. We prove that the
descent polynomials of derangements are real-rooted, settling the
derangement part of a conjecture of S.~Fu, Z.~Lin, and J.~Zeng. The proof
uses a compatible-pair recursion and finite-symbol stability. We also
resolve the real-rootedness conjecture in OEIS
\oeis{A335340}, strengthen the known rowwise real-rootedness of an even-top
descent family to consecutive strict interlacing, and prove real-rootedness,
consecutive interlacing, and real-rooted gamma-polynomials for U.~Shankar's
super-Eulerian polynomials. A differential recurrence gives consecutive
weak interlacing for ternary words counted by increasing runs.
Finally, we prove stability of the peak-value refinement and consecutive
interleaving of its positive weighted diagonals, settling a conjecture of
P.~Alexandersson and O.~Nabawanda.
A general method of deducing the determinantal expressions for polynomial and its derivative
In this paper, we present a general method of deducing the determinantal expressions for a polynomial and its derivative. As illustrations, we provide three determinantal expressions for the derivative of the Eulerian polynomial. Using a functional equation discovered by Gessel,we also establish the determinantal expressions for the second-order Eulerian polynomial and its derivative.
Variations of colored multiset Eulerian polynomials and applications
Deligeorgaki, Han and Solus introduced colored multiset Eulerian polynomials, derived a generating function identity which generalizes MacMahon's identity, proved their self-interlacing under suitable parameter conditions, and identified these polynomials as the h^*-polynomials of direct products of dilated lattice simplices. In this paper, we introduce an ascent analogue of the colored multiset Eulerian polynomial, derive an explicit generating function identity for this polynomial, show that it is equal to the h^*-polynomial of a family of half-open lattice polytopes, and verify that this ascent polynomial also satisfies self-interlacing under the same parameter conditions. By establishing recurrence relations, we prove that both polynomials are real-rooted for all positive integer parameters. The obtained identities are further applied to interpret combinatorially the h^*-polynomials of Pitman--Stanley polytopes, composition polytopes and a family of reflexive lattice polytopes defined from preorders.
The half interlacing property among the types A, B and D Eulerian polynomials
A famous result in the theory of combinatorial polynomials is the real-rootedness of the type $D$ Eulerian polynomial $D_n(x)$, which was originally conjectured by Brenti in 1994. By constructing a set of compatible polynomials over $s$-inversion sequences, Savage and Visontai proved this conjecture in 2013. Using matrices preserving interlacing properties of nonnegative polynomial sequences, Bränden also established the real-rootedness of $D_n(x)$. Combining Hermite-Biehler theorem and a result of Borcea and Brändén on Hurwitz stability, Yang and Zhang gave another proof of the real-rootedness of $D_n(x)$. By constructing half Eulerian polynomials of type $D$, Hyatt reproved Brenti's conjecture. As originally suggested by Brenti in 1994, it is possible that the real-rootedness of $D_n(x)$ may be established by using a more precise knowledge of the location of zeros of the types $A$ and $B$ Eulerian polynomials. In this paper, we add more details to the first proof of the real-rootedness of $D_n(x)$ that was provided by the author in 2012, which yields the half interlacing property among the types $A,B$ and $D$ Eulerian polynomials.
An Invertible Family of Hurwitz--Lerch Type Functions Associated with $k$-Augmented Centered Triangular Numbers
This paper defines a family of Hurwitz--Lerch type functions whose
coefficients are the \(k\)-augmented centered triangular numbers. For this
family, we obtain the convergence conditions, a reduction formula, and an
Euler-operator form. A Vandermonde-based inversion formula is derived for a
class of polynomially weighted Hurwitz--Lerch functions. The family considered
here is the quadratic case with geometric factors \(1\), \(2\), and \(4\).
The resulting formulas show that three consecutive functions recover the
classical Hurwitz--Lerch transcendent and its first two Euler derivatives.
We also derive recurrence formulas, ordinary generating functions, finite
sums, and special values. The values at \(z=1\) are expressed through
Hurwitz zeta functions and Bernoulli polynomials. When \(a=1\), the numerator
polynomials of the rational values \(H_k(z,-m,1)\) are written in terms of
Eulerian polynomials, while the alternating values \(H_k(-1,-m,a)\) are
expressed through Euler polynomials.
The Grammatical Calculus
We give an introduction to the grammatical calculus, which originated from the umbral calculus of Rota. Context-free grammars arise in computer science. Differential operators can be viewed as the production rules of context-free grammars. By the properties of differential operators, we may perform the grammatical calculus on a rigorous basis, for the purposes of deriving combinatorial identities and computing generating functions. A grammatical labeling serves as a bridge between a combinatorial structure and the grammar. A grammar may be instrumental in constructing a bijection between two combinatorial structures sharing the same grammar. Such a bijection is called a grammar assisted bijection. Many combinatorial structures admit recursive constructions that are context-free in some sense, such as those corresponding to the Eulerian polynomials, Bell polynomials, the Ramanujan polynomials and the Narayana polynomials.
Order polytopes of generalized snake posets are $h^*$-real-rooted
Order polytopes for generalized snake posets were recently studied by von Bell et al. (2022), and are known to be unimodularly equivalent to strength-one flow polytopes for acyclic directed graphs strongly dual to generalized snake posets. Lee, Vindas-Meléndez, and Wang (2026) conjectured that the Ehrhart $h^*$-polynomials of these order polytopes are real-rooted. We prove this conjecture using a connection between these $h^*$-polynomials and non-nesting rook polynomials, which were recently introduced by Alexandersson and Jal (2024+) in connection with $P$-Eulerian polynomials for width two posets.
Biorthogonal eigenvectors of the Holte carry matrix and cascade-free enumeration
For $k$-summand base-$N$ addition, the carry process is a Markov chain on $\{0,\ldots,k-1\}$ whose transition matrix--the Holte matrix $T$--has eigenvalues $\{N^{-j}\}_{j=0}^{k-1}$, all simple and independent of $N$. We give the complete biorthogonal eigenvector system. The left eigenvectors factor as $\sum_i u_j[i] x^i = c_{k,j} (x-1)^j A_{k-j}(x)$, where $c_{k,j} = |s(k,k-j)|/k!$ involves unsigned Stirling numbers and $A_n(x)$ is the Eulerian polynomial. The right eigenvectors satisfy $\sum_i \binom{k-1}{i} v_j[i] x^i = (1+x)^{k-1-j} Q_j(x)$, where the quotient polynomials $Q_j$ have palindrome symmetry $x^j Q_j(1/x) = (-1)^j Q_j(x)$ and converge to $(1-x)^j$ as $k \to \infty$; for $j \le 3$, we give explicit closed forms in terms of $k$. The cascade-free avoidance count satisfies $a(L) = (\sqrt{d})^L U_L(x)$ (Chebyshev polynomial of the second kind) whenever the restricted transfer matrix has dimension $d \le 2$; we prove this is sharp: for $k$-summand addition, Chebyshev form holds for $k = 3$ and fails for $k \ge 4$. The proof uses oscillatory matrix theory to establish non-vanishing of all spectral residues. The characteristic polynomial of the restricted transfer matrix is determined in closed form by a Stirling-weighted Lagrange interpolation at the Holte eigenvalues. Two systems with binary carry state spaces are shadow-equivalent if and only if they share the pair $(N, d)$. The general classification for $k$-state systems reduces to the characteristic polynomial of $T$.
Eulerian polynomials and the alternating sum of excedances
Tangent numbers $T_{2n-1}$, which enumerate alternating permutations of odd length, play a prominent role in the Taylor series expansion of the tangent function $\tan(x)$. In this work, we adopt a combinatorial approach based on the excedance statistic of permutations, which allows us to interpret the coefficients of the tangent series in a structural and enumerative way. Using this framework, we establish a classical identity that relates the alternating sum of excedances to the hyperbolic tangent function. This perspective highlights deep connections with Eulerian polynomials, provides a combinatorial interpretation of tangent numbers, and links these sequences to Genocchi numbers and related arithmetic properties. The approach not only unifies analytic and combinatorial viewpoints but also opens the way to generalizations to other permutation statistics and families of specialized permutations.
Combinatorial relations among restricted and half Eulerian polynomials of types $A$, $B$, and $D$
In this paper, we study relations among several types of Eulerian polynomials from a combinatorial viewpoint. We establish an identity between the restricted Eulerian polynomials of types $A$ and $B$. As an application, we present a bijective proof of a new identity involving the Eulerian polynomials of type $A$ and type $B$, solving a recent open problem proposed by Zhang. Additionally, we derive an identity between the half Eulerian polynomials of type $B$ and type $D$. Using this identity, we further obtain another relation about the Eulerian polynomials of type $A$ and type $B$, as well as a recursive formula connecting the restricted Eulerian polynomials of type $D$ and Eulerian polynomials of types $A$ and $B$.
Eulerian-type polynomials over matchings and matching permutations
Claesson and Linusson [Proc. Am. Math. Soc., 139 (2011), 435-449] observed that there are n! matchings on [2n] with no left-nestings. Inspired by this result, this paper is devoted to exploring a deeper connection between matchings and permutations. We first discover that a quadruple statistic over matchings corresponds to the well known quadruple statistic (exc, drop, fix, cyc) over permutations, where exc, drop, fix and cyc are the excedance, drop, fixed point and cycle statistics, respectively. By introducing matching permutations, we provide a symmetric expansion of a five-variable neighbor polynomial of matchings, which encodes a great deal of neighbor information. As an application, we discover the e-positivity of NCA-polynomials, which implies that the left-nesting number, the left-crossing number and the neighbor alignment number are distributed symmetrically over all matchings on [2n]. We also establish the relationship between the five-variable neighbor polynomials and the trivariate second-order Eulerian polynomials, which generalizes the related results of Claesson and Linusson, Cameron and Killpatrick as well as Chen and Fu.
Palindromicity of multivariate Eulerian polynomials
We lift to the multivariate Eulerian polynomials the identity implying that univariate Eulerian polynomials are palindromic. As a consequence of this generalization, we obtain nice combinatorial identities that can be directly extracted from this polynomial relation and the bijection between permutations involved in the proof of the identity.
Parking Function Polytopes
We extend the notion of parking function polytopes and study their geometric and combinatorial structure, including normal fans, face posets, and $h$-polynomials, as well as their connections to other classes of polytopes. To capture their combinatorial features, we introduce generalizations of ordered set partitions, called binary partitions and skewed binary partitions. Using properties of preorder cones, we characterize the skewed binary partitions that are in bijection with the cones of the normal fan of a parking function polytope. This description of the normal fan yields an explicit formula for the $h$-polynomials of simple parking function polytopes in terms of generalized Eulerian polynomials. Finally, we relate parking function polytopes to several well-known polytopes, leading to additional results, including formulas for their volumes and Ehrhart polynomials.
Cyclotomic Euler-Mahonian polynomials
The cyclotomic Eulerian polynomials and the cyclotomic Mahonian polynomials have each been the subject of extensive studies in Combinatorics, with particular attention to their signed versions. In contrast, the joint study of cyclotomic Euler-Mahonian polynomials has received far less consideration. To the best of our knowledge, the only prior result in this direction is a formula due to Wachs for the signed Euler-Mahonian polynomials in the even case. In this paper, we focus on the cyclotomic Euler-Mahonian polynomials and derive a formula based on the Hadamard product.
As corollaries, we obtain the $I$-analogue (where $I=\sqrt{-1}$) of Wachs' formula for signed Euler-Mahonian polynomials, as well as the previously missing odd case for the signed Euler-Mahonian polynomials.
Counting permutations by alternating runs via Hetyei-Reiner trees
The generating polynomial of permutations of size $n$, counted by the number of alternating runs, has a root at $-1$ of multiplicity $\lfloor (n-2)/2 \rfloor$ for all $n \ge 2$. This result can be derived by combining the David--Barton formula for Eulerian polynomials with the Foata--Schützenberger $γ$--decomposition. More recently, Bóna gave a group--action proof of this phenomenon.
In this paper, we present an alternative approach based on the Hetyei--Reiner action on binary trees, which leads to a new combinatorial interpretation of Bóna's quotient polynomial. Moreover, we extend our analysis to analogous results for permutations of types~$B$ and~$D$. As a by--product of our bijective framework, we also obtain combinatorial proofs of David--Barton--type identities for permutations of types~$A$ and~$B$.
Chow polynomials of totally nonnegative matrices and posets
Huh-Stevens and Ferroni-Schröter independently conjectured that Hilbert-Poincaré series of Chow rings of geometric lattices have only real zeros. Ferroni, Matherne and the second author extended this conjecture to Chow polynomials of Cohen-Macaulay poset. In this paper we address the above conjectures by providing new defining relations and properties of Chow functions of posets and matrices. These are used, in conjunction with new techniques on interlacing sequences of polynomials, to prove that Chow polynomials of totally nonnegative matrices have only real zeros, which, in turn, proves the above conjectures for a class of posets that contains projective and affine geometries, face lattices of cubical polytopes, partition lattices and Dowling lattices, perfect matroid designs, and lattices of flats of paving matroids. We also study Chow polynomials of Toeplitz matrices in greater detail, and show how these are related the combinatorics of binomial and Sheffer posets, as well as to a family of generalized Eulerian polynomials with coefficients in the ring of symmetric polynomials that have been studied by e.g. Stanley, Brenti, Stembridge and Shareshian-Wachs.
Generalized $f$-Eulerian polynomials: zeros and hypergeometric representations with applications
In this paper, we explore (slightly generalized) $f$-Eulerian polynomials introduced by Stanley and frequently appearing in combinatorics. Notable special cases include the classical Eulerian polynomials, the generating polynomials of order polynomials for certain labeled posets, and the $d$-Narayana polynomials. We establish simple sufficient conditions for the reality (and sign) of their zeros and present implications for total positivity of sequences generated by values of polynomials at integers. We further relate these polynomials to generalized Euler's transformations for the generalized hypergeometric functions with integral parameter differences. Exploiting this and other hypergeometric connections, we provide purely hypergeometric proofs for various known and some new properties of $d$-Narayana polynomials. Another family encompassed by our definition of the generalized $f$-Eulerian polynomials is that of Jacobi-Piñeiro type II multiple orthogonal polynomials. Their zero location can thus be analyzed, for both canonical and non-canonical parameter values, without invoking orthogonality. Finally, we present several connection formulas relating $d$-Narayana polynomials to particular Jacobi-Piñeiro polynomials.
The ratio monotonicity of Eulerian-type polynomials
This paper is motivated by determining the location of modes of some unimodal Eulerian-type polynomials. The notion of ratio monotonicity was introduced by Chen-Xia when they investigated the $q$-derangement numbers. Let $(f_n(x))_{n\geqslant 0}$ be a sequence of real polynomials satisfying the Eulerian-type recurrence relation $$f_{n+1}(x)=(anx+bx+c)f_n(x)+ax(1-x)\frac{\mathrm{d}}{\mathrm{d}x}f_n(x),~f_0(x)=1,$$ where $a,b$ and $c$ are nonnegative integers. Assume that $deg f_n(x)=n$. Setting $g_n(x)=x^nf_n\left(\frac{1}{x}\right)$, we have $$g_{n+1}(x)=(anx+b+cx)g_n(x)+ax(1-x)\frac{\mathrm{d}}{\mathrm{d}x}g_n(x),$$ We find that if $a+c\geqslant b\geqslant c>0$, then $f_n(x)$ is bi-gamma-positive and $g_n(x)$ is ratio monotone. As applications, we discover the ratio monotonicity of several Eulerian-type polynomials, including the $(exc, cyc)$ $q$-Eulerian polynomials, the $1/k$-Eulerian polynomials, a kind of generalized Eulerian polynomials studied by Carlitz-Scoville, the $(des_B,neg)$ $q$-Eulerian polynomials over the hyperoctahedral group and the $r$-colored Eulerian polynomials. In particular, let $A_n(x,q)$ be the $(exc, cyc)$ $q$-Eulerian polynomials, we find that the polynomials $x^{n-1}A_n(1/x,q)$ are ratio monotone when $0<q\leqslant 1$, while $A_n(x,q)$ are ratio monotone when $1\leqslant q\leqslant 2$.
Guessing sequences of eigenvectors for LMPs defining spectrahedral relaxations of Eulerian rigidly convex sets
Stable multivariate Eulerian polynomials were introduced by Brändén. Particularizing some variables, it is possible to extract real zero multivariate Eulerian polynomials from them. These real zero multivariate Eulerian polynomials can be fed into constructions of spectrahedral relaxations providing therefore approximations to the (Eulerian) rigidly convex sets defined by these polynomials. The accuracy of these approximations is measured through the behaviour in the diagonal, where the usual univariate Eulerian polynomials sit. In particular, in this sense, the accuracy of the global spectrahedral approximation produced by the spectrahedral relaxation can be measured in terms of bounds for the extreme roots of univariate Eulerian polynomials. The bounds thus obtained beat the previous bounds found in the literature. However, the bound explicitly studied and obtained before beat the previously known bounds by a quantity going to $0$ when $n$ goes to infinity. Here we use numerical experiments to construct a sequence of vectors providing a (linearized) bound whose difference with the previous known bounds is a growing exponential function (going therefore fast to infinity when $n$ grows). This allows us to establish a better (diagonal) measure of accuracy for the spectrahedral relaxation of the Eulerian rigidly convex sets. In particular, we will achieve this by linearizing through the sequence of vectors $\{(y,(-2^{m-i})_{i=3}^{m},(0,\frac{1}{2}),(1)_{i=1}^{m})\in\mathbb{R}^{n+1}\}_{n=1}^{\infty}$ for even $n=2m$.
Symmetric decompositions and Euler-Stirling statistics on Stirling permutations
The Stirling permutations introduced by Gessel-Stanley have recently received considerable attention. Motivated by Ji's work on $(α,β)$-Eulerian polynomials (Sci China Math., 2025) and Yan-Yang-Lin's work on $1/k$-Eulerian polynomials (J. Combin. Theory Ser. A, 2026), we present several symmetric decompositions of the enumerators related to Euler-Stirling statistics on Stirling permutations. Firstly, we provide a partial symmetric decomposition for the $1/k$-Eulerian polynomial. Secondly, we give several unexpected applications of the $(p,q)$-Eulerian polynomials, where $p$ marks the number of fixed points of permutations and $q$ marks that of cycles. From this paper, one can see that $(p,q)$-Eulerian polynomial contains a great deal of information about permutations and Stirling permutations. Using the change of grammars, we show that the $(α,β)$-Eulerian polynomials introduced by Carlitz-Scoville can be deduced from the $(p,q)$-Eulerian polynomials by special parametrizations. We then introduce proper and improper ascent-plateau statistics on Stirling permutations. Moreover, we introduce proper ascent, improper ascent, proper descent and improper descent statistics on permutations. Furthermore, we consider the joint distributions of Euler-Stirling statistics on permutations, including the numbers of improper ascents, proper ascents, left-to-right minima and right-to-left minina. In the final part, we first give a symmetric decomposition of the joint distribution of the ascent-plateau and left ascent-plateau statistics, and then we show that the $q$-ascent-plateau polynomials are bi-$γ$-positive, where $q$ marks the number of left-to-right minima.
