Eulerian polynomials and the alternating sum of excedances
Tangent numbers $T_{2n-1}$, which enumerate alternating permutations of odd length, play a prominent role in the Taylor series expansion of the tangent function $\tan(x)$. In this work, we adopt a combinatorial approach based on the excedance statistic of permutations, which allows us to interpret the coefficients of the tangent series in a structural and enumerative way. Using this framework, we establish a classical identity that relates the alternating sum of excedances to the hyperbolic tangent function. This perspective highlights deep connections with Eulerian polynomials, provides a combinatorial interpretation of tangent numbers, and links these sequences to Genocchi numbers and related arithmetic properties. The approach not only unifies analytic and combinatorial viewpoints but also opens the way to generalizations to other permutation statistics and families of specialized permutations.
Parity patterns meet Genocchi numbers, I: four labelings and three bijections
Hetyei introduced in 2019 the homogenized Linial arrangement and showed that its regions are counted by the median Genocchi numbers. In the course of devising a different proof of Hetyei's result, Lazar and Wachs considered another hyperplane arrangement that is associated with certain bipartite graph called Ferrers graph. We bijectively label the regions of this latter arrangement with permutations whose ascents are subject to a parity restriction. This labeling not only establishes the equivalence between two enumerative results due to Hetyei and Lazar-Wachs, repectively, but also motivates us to derive and investigate a Seidel-like triangle that interweaves Genocchi numbers of both kinds.
Applying similar ideas, we introduce three more variants of permutations with analogous parity restrictions. We provide labelings for regions of the aforementioned arrangement using these three sets of restricted permutations as well. Furthermore, bijections from our first permutation model to two previously known permutation models are established.
The new combinatorial identities of symmetric functions
In this paper, we provide some novel binomial convolution related to symmetric functions, as well as convolution sums without the binomial symbol. Moreover we give some new convolution sums of Bernoulli, Euler, and Genocchi numbers and polynomials with symmetric functions , by making use of the elementary methods including exponential generating functions. From these convolutions we deduce several new combinatorial identities for bivariate polynomials, and we establish several new identities related Bernoulli, Euler and Genocchi numbers and polynomials with certain bivariate polynomials such as bivariate Fibonacci, bivariate Lucas, bivariate balancing and bivariate balancing-Lucas polynomials.
Continued fractions using a Laguerre digraph interpretation of the Foata--Zeilberger bijection and its variants
In the combinatorial theory of continued fractions, the Foata--Zeilberger bijection and its variants have been extensively used to derive various continued fractions enumerating several (sometimes infinitely many) simultaneous statistics on permutations (combinatorial model for factorials) and D-permutations (combinatorial model for Genocchi and median Genocchi numbers). A Laguerre digraph is a digraph in which each vertex has in- and out-degrees $0$ or $1$. In this paper, we interpret the Foata--Zeilberger bijection in terms of Laguerre digraphs, which enables us to count cycles in permutations. Using this interpretation, we obtain Jacobi-type continued fractions for multivariate polynomials enumerating permutations, and also Thron-type and Stieltjes-type continued fractions for multivariate polynomials enumerating D-permutations, in both cases including the counting of cycles. This enables us to prove some conjectured continued fractions due to Sokal and Zeng (2022 Advances in Applied Mathematics) in the case of permutations, and Randrianarivony and Zeng (1996 Electronic Journal of Combinatorics) and Deb and Sokal (2024 Advances in Applied Mathematics) in the case of D-permutations.

A D-permutation is a permutation of $[2n]$ satisfying $2k-1 \le σ(2k-1)$ and $2k \ge σ(2k)$ for all $k$; they provide a combinatorial model for the Genocchi and median Genocchi numbers. We find Stieltjes-type and Thron-type continued fractions for some multivariate polynomials that enumerate D-permutations with respect to a very large (sometimes infinite) number of simultaneous statistics that measure cycle status, record status, crossings and nestings.

A graph with vertex set $\{1,\ldots,n\}$ is terrain-like if, for any edge pair $\{a,c\},\{b,d\}$ with $a<b<c<d$, the edge $\{a,d\}$ also exists. Terrain-like graphs frequently appear in geometry in the context of visibility graphs. We show that terrain-like graphs are counted by the median Genocchi numbers. To this end, we prove a bijection between terrain-like graphs and Dumont derangements of the second kind.

In 2019, A. Lazar and M. L. Wachs conjectured that the number of cycles on $[2n]$ with only even-odd drops equals the $n$-th Genocchi number. In this paper, we restrict our attention to a subset of cycles on $[n]$ that in all drops in the cycle, the latter entry is odd. We deduce two bivariate generating functions for such a subset of cycles with an extra variable introduced to count the number of odd-odd and even-odd drops, respectively. One of the generating function identities confirms Lazar and Wachs' conjecture, while the other identity implies that the number of cycles on $[2n-1]$ with only odd-odd drops equals the $(n-2)$-th Genocchi median.

In this paper, we confirm six conjectures on the exact values of some permanents, relating them to the Genocchi numbers of the first and second kinds as well as the Euler numbers. For example, we prove that $$\mathrm{per}\left[\left\lfloor\frac{2j-k}{n}\right\rfloor\right]_{1\le j,k\le n}=2(2^{n+1}-1)B_{n+1},$$ where $B_0,B_1,B_2,\ldots$ are the Bernoulli numbers. We also show that $$ \mathrm{per}\left[\mathrm{sgn}\left(\cosπ\frac{i+j}{n+1}\right)\right]_{1\le i,j\le n}=\begin{cases} -\sum_{k=0}^m\binom{m}{k}E_{2k+1}&\quad\text{if}\ n=2m+1,\\ \sum_{k=0}^m\binom{m}{k}E_{2k}&\quad\text{if}\ n=2m, \end{cases} $$ where $\mathrm{sgn}(x)$ is the sign function, and $E_0,E_1,E_2,\ldots$ are the Euler (zigzag) numbers.
In the course of linking the evaluation of these permanents to the aforementioned combinatorial sequences, the classical permutation statistic -- the excedance number, together with several kinds of its variants, plays a central role. Our approach features recurrence relations, bijections, as well as certain elementary operations on matrices that preserve their permanents. Moreover, our proof of the second permanent identity leads to a proof of Bala's conjectural continued fraction formula, and an unexpected permutation interpretation for the $γ$-coefficients of the $2$-Eulerian polynomials.

For a finite subset $A$ of $\mathbb{Z}_{>0}$, Lazar and Wachs (2019) conjectured that the number of cycles on $A$ with only even-odd drops is equal to the number of D-cycles on $A$. In this note, we introduce cycles on a multiset with only even-odd drops and prove bijectively a multiset version of their conjecture. As a consequence, the number of cycles on $[2n]$ with only even-odd drops equals the Genocchi number $g_n$. With Laguerre histories as an intermediate structure, we also construct a bijection between a class of permutations of length $2n-1$ known to be counted by $g_n$ invented by Dumont and the cycles on $[2n]$ with only even-odd drops.

Recently, Lazar and Wachs (arXiv:1910.07651) showed that the (median) Genocchi numbers play a fundamental role in the study of the homogenized Linial arrangement and obtained two new permutation models (called D-permutations and E-permutations) for (median) Genocchi numbers. They further conjecture that the distributions of cycle numbers over the two models are equal. In a follow-up, Eu et al. (arXiv:2103.09130) further proved the gamma-positivity of the descent polynomials of even-odd descent permutations, which are in bijection with E-permutations by Foata's fundamental transformation. This paper merges the above two papers by considering a general moment sequence which encompasses the number of cycles and number of drops of E-permutations. Using the combinatorial theory of continued fraction, the moment connection enables us to confirm Lazar-Wachs' conjecture and obtain a natural $(p,q)$-analogue of Eu et al's descent polynomials. Furthermore, we show that the $γ$-coefficients of our $(p,q)$-analogue of descent polynomials have the same factorization flavor as the $γ$-coeffcients of Brändén's $(p,q)$-Eulerian polynomials.

We study the generating function of descent numbers for the permutations with descent pairs of prescribed parities, the distribution of which turns out to be a refinement of median Genocchi numbers. We prove the $γ$-positivity for the polynomial and derive the generating function for the $γ$-vectors, expressed in the form of continued fraction. We also come up with an artificial statistic that gives a $q$-analogue of the $γ$-positivity for the permutations with descents only allowed from an odd value to an odd value.

The classical hook length formula counts the number of standard tableaux of straight shapes. In 1996, Okounkov and Olshanski found a positive formula for the number of standard Young tableaux of a skew shape. We prove various properties of this formula, including three determinantal formulas for the number of nonzero terms, an equivalence between the Okounkov-Olshanski formula and another skew tableaux formula involving Knutson-Tao puzzles, and two $q$-analogues for reverse plane partitions, which complements work by Stanley and Chen for semistandard tableaux. We also give several reformulations of the formula, including two in terms of the excited diagrams appearing in a more recent skew tableaux formula by Naruse. Lastly, for thick zigzag shapes we show that the number of nonzero terms is given by a determinant of the Genocchi numbers and improve on known upper bounds by Morales-Pak-Panova on the number of standard tableaux of these shapes.

The Poupard polynomials are polynomials in one variable with integer coefficients, with some close relationship to Bernoulli and tangent numbers. They also have a combinatorial interpretation. We prove that every Poupard polynomial has all its roots on the unit circle. We also obtain the same property for another sequence of polynomials introduced by Kreweras and related to Genocchi numbers. This is obtained through a general statement about some linear operators acting on palindromic polynomials.

We show that $Γ$-free fillings and lonesum fillings of Ferrers shapes are equinumerous by applying a previously defined bijection on matrices for this more general case and by constructing a new bijection between Callan sequences and Dumont-like permutations. As an application, we give a new combinatorial interpretation of Genocchi numbers in terms of Callan sequences. Further, we recover some of Hetyei's results on alternating acyclic tournaments. Finally, we present an interesting result in the case of certain other special shapes.

We study the intersection lattice of a hyperplane arrangement recently introduced by Hetyei who showed that the number of regions of the arrangement is a median Genocchi number. Using a different method, we refine Hetyei's result by providing a combinatorial interpretation of the coefficients of the characteristic polynomial of the intersection lattice of this arrangement. We also show that the Möbius invariant of the intersection lattice is a (nonmedian) Genocchi number. The Genocchi numbers count a class of permutations known as Dummont permutations and the median Genocchi numbers count the derangements in this class. We show that the signless coefficients of the characteristic polynomial count Dumont-like permutations with a given number of cycles. This enables us to derive formulas for the generating function of the characteristic polynomial, which reduce to known formulas for the generating functions of the Genocchi numbers and the median Genocchi numbers. As a byproduct of our work, we obtain new models for the Genocchi and median Genocchi numbers.
An Aearated Triangular Array of Integers
Congruences modulo prime powers involving generalized Harmonic numbers are known. While looking for similar congruences, we have encountered a curious triangular array of numbers indexed with positive integers $n,k$, involving the Bernoulli and cycle Stirling numbers. These numbers are all integers and they vanish when $n-k$ is odd. This triangle has many similarities with the Stirling triangle. In particular, we show how it can be extended to negative indices and how this extension produces a {\it second kind} of such integers which may be considered as a new generalization of the Genocchi numbers and for which a generating function is easily obtained. But our knowledge of these integers remains limited, especially for those of the {\it first kind}.
On the Homogenized Linial Arrangement: Intersection Lattice and Genocchi Numbers
Hetyei recently introduced a hyperplane arrangement (called the homogenized Linial arrangement) and used the finite field method of Athanasiadis to show that its number of regions is a median Genocchi number. These numbers count a class of permutations known as Dumont derangements. Here, we take a different approach, which makes direct use of Zaslavsky's formula relating the intersection lattice of this arrangement to the number of regions. We refine Hetyei's result by obtaining a combinatorial interpretation of the Möbius function of this lattice in terms of variants of the Dumont permutations. This enables us to derive a formula for the generating function of the characterisitic polynomial of the arrangement. The Möbius invariant of the lattice turns out to be a (nonmedian) Genocchi number. Our techniques also yield type B, and more generally Dowling arrangement, analogs of these results.

In the theory of finite order knot invariants, the universal $\text{sl}_2$ weight system maps the chord diagrams to polynomials in a single variable with integer coefficients. In this paper, we define a family of polynomials that generalize the Kreweras triangle (known to refine the normalized median Genocchi numbers), and we show how it appears in this weight system.
