Combinatorial Methods in Bootstrap Percolation Problems
An elegant bootstrap percolation result on the hyperrectangle graph was proved by Balogh, Bollobás, Morris, and Riordan using a linear algebric method in 2012. This paper studies the same problem by purely combinatorial means. The base case is solved for all dimensions, and we pose open problems for the remaining cases.
Partitions of Graphs into Special Bipartite Graphs
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, vol. 27:3, Graph Theory (November 17, 2025) dmtcs:15361 • View PublicationBIB
We study the problem of partitioning the edge set of the complete graph into bipartite subgraphs under certain constraints defined by forbidden subgraphs. These constraints lead to both classical problems, such as partitioning into independent matchings or complete bipartite subgraphs, and novel variants motivated by structural restrictions. Our theoretical framework is inspired by clustering problems in real-world transaction graphs, which can be formulated naturally as edge partitioning problems under bipartite graph constraints. The main result of this paper is the proof of the bounds for $χ'_{2K_2}(n)$, which corresponds to the minimum number of induced $2K_2$-free bipartite subgraphs needed to partition the edges of $K_n$. In addition to this central result, we also present several similar bounds for other forbidden subgraphs on three or four vertices. Some are included primarily for the sake of completeness, to demonstrate the broad applicability of our approach, and some lead to other novel or well-known graph theoretical problems.

Lonesum and $Γ$-free $0$-$1$ fillings of Ferrers shapes
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that $Γ$-free fillings and lonesum fillings of Ferrers shapes are equinumerous by applying a previously defined bijection on matrices for this more general case and by constructing a new bijection between Callan sequences and Dumont-like permutations. As an application, we give a new combinatorial interpretation of Genocchi numbers in terms of Callan sequences. Further, we recover some of Hetyei's results on alternating acyclic tournaments. Finally, we present an interesting result in the case of certain other special shapes.

Bijective enumerations of $Γ$-free 0-1 matrices
Published • View PublicationBIB
We construct a new bijection between the set of $n\times k$ $0$-$1$ matrices with no three $1$'s forming a $Γ$ configuration and the set of $(n,k)$-Callan sequences, a simple structure counted by poly-Bernoulli numbers. We give two applications of this result: We derive the generating function of $Γ$-free matrices, and we give a new bijective proof for an elegant result of Aval et al. that states that the number of complete non-ambiguous forests with $n$ leaves is equal to the number of pairs of permutations of $\{1,\dots,n\}$ with no common rise.

On the staircases of Gyárfás
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 23(2) (2016), #P2.17 • Search Publication
Gyárfás investigated a geometric Ramsey problem on convex, separated, balanced, geometric $K_{n,n}$. This led to appealing extremal problem on square $0$-$1$ matrices. Gyárfás conjectured that any $0$-$1$ matrix of size $n\times n$ has a staircase of size $n-1$. We introduce the non-symmetric version of Gyárfás' problem. We give upper bounds and in certain range matching lower bound on the corresponding extremal function. In the square/balanced case we improve the $(4/5+ε)n$ lower bound of Cai, Gyárfás et al. to $5n/6-7/12$. We settle the problem when instead of considering maximum staircases we deal with the sum of the size of the longest $0$- and $1$-staircases.

A simple combinatorial proof of Shapiro's Catalan convolution
Published in Advances in Applied Mathematics, Volume 49, Issues 3-5, 2012, Pages 391-396 • View PublicationBIB
Shapiro proved an elegant convolution formula involving Catalan numbers of even index. This paper gives a simple combinatorial proof of his formula. In addition, we show that it is equivalent with the alternating convolution formula of central binomial coefficients.
