Nearest neighbor representations of Boolean functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
A nearest neighbor representation of a Boolean function is a set of positive and negative prototypes in $R^n$ such that the function has value 1 on an input iff the closest prototype is positive. For $k$-nearest neighbor representation the majority classification of the $k$ closest prototypes is considered. The nearest neighbor complexity of a Boolean function is the minimal number of prototypes needed to represent the function. We give several bounds for this measure. Separations are given between the cases when prototypes can be real or are required to be Boolean. The complexity of parity is determined exactly. An exponential lower bound is given for mod 2 inner product, and a linear lower bound is given for its $k$-nearest neighbor complexity. The results are proven using connections to other models such as polynomial threshold functions over $\{1, 2\}$. We also discuss some of the many open problems arising.

Combinatorial properties of poly-Bernoulli relatives
In this note we augment the poly-Bernoulli family with two new combinatorial objects. We derive formulas for the relatives of the poly-Bernoulli numbers using the appropriate variations of combinatorial interpretations. Our goal is to show connections between the different areas where poly-Bernoulli numbers and their relatives appear and give examples how the combinatorial methods can be used for deriving formulas between integer arrays.

On the staircases of Gyárfás
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 23(2) (2016), #P2.17 • Search Publication
Gyárfás investigated a geometric Ramsey problem on convex, separated, balanced, geometric $K_{n,n}$. This led to appealing extremal problem on square $0$-$1$ matrices. Gyárfás conjectured that any $0$-$1$ matrix of size $n\times n$ has a staircase of size $n-1$. We introduce the non-symmetric version of Gyárfás' problem. We give upper bounds and in certain range matching lower bound on the corresponding extremal function. In the square/balanced case we improve the $(4/5+ε)n$ lower bound of Cai, Gyárfás et al. to $5n/6-7/12$. We settle the problem when instead of considering maximum staircases we deal with the sum of the size of the longest $0$- and $1$-staircases.

Combinatorics of poly-Bernoulli numbers
The ${\mathbb B}_n^{(k)}$ poly-Bernoulli numbers --- a natural generalization of classical Bernoulli numbers ($B_n={\mathbb B}_n^{(1)}$) --- were introduced by Kaneko in 1997. When the parameter $k$ is negative then ${\mathbb B}_n^{(k)}$ is a nonnegative number. Brewbaker was the first to give combinatorial interpretation of these numbers. He proved that ${\mathbb B}_n^{(-k)}$ counts the so called lonesum $0\text{-}1$ matrices of size $n\times k$. Several other interpretations were pointed out. We survey these and give new ones. Our new interpretation, for example, gives a transparent, combinatorial explanation of Kaneko's recursive formula for poly-Bernoulli numbers
Saturated simple and 2-simple topological graphs with few edges
Published • View PublicationBIB
A simple topological graph is a topological graph in which any two edges have at most one common point, which is either their common endpoint or a proper crossing. More generally, in a k-simple topological graph, every pair of edges has at most k common points of this kind. We construct saturated simple and 2-simple graphs with few edges. These are k-simple graphs in which no further edge can be added. We improve the previous upper bounds of Kynčl, Pach, Radoičić, and Tóth and show that there are saturated simple graphs on n vertices with only 7n edges and saturated 2-simple graphs on n vertices with 14.5n edges. As a consequence, 14.5n edges is also a new upper bound for k-simple graphs (considering all values of k). We also construct saturated simple and 2-simple graphs that have some vertices with low degree.
On the structure of graphs with path-width at most two
Nancy G. Kinnersley and Michael A. Langston has determined the excluded minors for the class of graphs with path-width at most two by computer. Their list consisted of 110 graphs. Such a long list is difficult to handle and gives no insight to structural properties. We take a different route, and concentrate on the building blocks and how they are glued together. In this way, we get a characterization of 2-connected and 2-edge-connected graphs with path-width at most two. Along similar lines, we sketch the complete characterization of graphs with path-width at most two.
Elementary proof techniques for the maximum number of islands
Islands are combinatorial objects that can be intuitively defined on a board consisting of a finite number of cells. Based on the neighbor relation of the cells, it is a fundamental property that two islands are either containing or disjoint. Recently, numerous extremal questions have been answered using different methods. We show elementary techniques unifying these approaches. Our building parts are based on rooted binary trees and discrete geometry. Among other things, we show the maximum cardinality of islands on a toroidal board and in a hypercube. We also strengthen a previous result by rarefying the neighborhood relation.
