Permutation Wordle
We introduce a guessing game, ``Permutation Wordle,'' in which a
guesser attempts to recover a setter's hidden permutation of the set
$\{1, \ldots, n\}$. In each round, the guesser submits a word over
the alphabet $\{1, \ldots, n\}$, and, as in the game Wordle, learns
which entries are correct. We describe a natural strategy and prove
that it is optimal in a strong sense: for every $r$, it solves at least as
many secrets within $r$ rounds as any possible strategy.
The number of permutations it solves in exactly $k+1$ rounds is the
Eulerian number $A(n,k)$.

The paper aims to provide a categorification of the Brenti--Welker identity involving Eulerian numbers in (Adv. Appl. Math. 42 (2009): 545--556) by lifting it from an enumerative equality to an isomorphism of symmetric group representations. To do so, we study the decomposition of the tensor product of $(\mathbb{C}^r)^{\otimes n}$ and modules affording Foulkes characters as modules of the symmetric group. The main ingredient of the proof is a combinatorial identity which may be of independent interest.
An identity for second Eulerian numbers via lattice-point counting
The second Eulerian numbers are defined via the descent enumerator of Stirling permutations, a class of permutations introduced by Gessel and Stanley. We give a simple and conceptual proof of two identities relating the Bernoulli numbers and the second Eulerian numbers. We rely on a recent Ehrhart-theoretic idea of Ferroni.
Moments for generalizations of a coin flip game
We derive a recursive formula for the moments of the number of flips using a possibly biased coin to produce a prescribed finite binary string $S$ when $S$ is either a run of heads or a run of heads followed by a tails. Our recursive formula involve certain sums, which we simplify by using a one-parameter extension of the well-studied Eulerian number, which belongs to the two-parameter family of numbers introduced by Graham, Knuth, and Patashnik. We also use the Goulden--Jackson cluster method and Faà di Bruno's formula to establish a closed formula for the moments in a more general situation where a die having an arbitrary number of faces with possibly different probabilities is rolled repeatedly until a prescribed finite word occurs.
Stein's method and the modular behavior of Eulerian numbers
The Eulerian number A(n,k) counts permutations of n symbols with exactly k descents. Motivated by questions in cryptography, several authors have studied the proportion of permutations whose number of descents lies in a fixed congruence class mod b, and its convergence to 1/b. We give an explicit error bound for this convergence using Stein's method for translated Poisson approximation.
On stable patterns and properties on permutations of multisets
In this paper, we study properties and patterns on permutations of multisets whose multivariate generating functions are symmetric. We interpret this phenomenon through the lens of group actions and define such a property or pattern as stable. We provide a complete characterization of stable classical patterns, showing that the only such patterns are those of length one or two. For consecutive patterns, we establish the stability of all monotone patterns and also identify a large class of unstable patterns. We conjecture that monotone patterns are the only stable consecutive patterns. All stability results in this paper are proven via explicit bijections, which provide new combinatorial interpretations of the symmetry of the generating functions. As an application, we use stability to derive recurrence relations for the ascent distribution on permutations of multisets, resulting in a generalization of Eulerian numbers.
Generalizing Eulerian Numbers via Semipermutations: Topological and Combinatorial Aspects
In a paper by Lin an interesting family of semipermutations comes out to index the elements of a cohomology basis of a Hessenberg type variety. The corresponding Betti numbers are a generalization of Eulerian numbers. We show three different subsets of the symmetric group that are in bijection with the set of these semipermutations. These bijections preserve the statistics lec and des: one of these is obtained by an algebraic-topological argument, the others are explicitly described in combinatorial terms.
Triangular Arrays using context-free grammar
In this work, the grammar of Hao \[ G=\{\, u\rightarrow u^{b_1+b_2+1} v^{a_1+a_2},\quad v\rightarrow u^{b_2}v^{a_2+1} \,\}, \] together with the correspondence between grammars and Combinatorial Differential Equations, is employed to obtain an interpretation of any triangular array of the form \[ T(n,k)=(a_2 n + a_1 k + a_0)\,T(n-1,k) + (b_2 n + b_1 k + b_0)\,T(n-1,k-1). \] Explicit formulas and structural properties are then derived through Analytic Differential Equations. In particular, the $r$-Whitney--Eulerian numbers and the cases where $b_2n+b_1k+b_0=1$ are obtained explicitly. Applications include new interpretation formulas for the $r$-Eulerian numbers with generating function for a special case.

The Eulerian numbers can D.I.E
The Eulerian numbers form a triangular array with many interesting properties. The numbers arise from various combinatorial and probabilistic interpretations, and have been studied in a variety of mathematical contexts. In this article we examine two distinct alternating sign formulas for the Eulerian numbers and show how they can be proved using a sign-reversing involution technique described by Benjamin and Quinn known as the ``D.I.E.'' method. Each of these arguments lends itself to a broad generalization, shedding light on different parts of mathematics.
Explicit Formulas and Combinatorial Interpretation of Triangular Arrays
Using the lattice $\mathbb{N}\times\mathbb{N}$, we derive a general formula for the sequences $\big(T(n,k)\big)_{n,k\in \mathbb{N}}$ satysfying the recurence relation of the form:
\begin{equation*}
T(n,k)=a_{n,k}T(n-1,k)+b_{n,k}T(n-1,k-1).
\end{equation*}
We apply this result to the case where $a_{n,k}=a_0+a_1k+a_2n$ and $b_{n,k}=b_0+b_1k+b_2n$.
This leads to explicit expressions for general $T(n,k)$, with simpler formulas arising in the case $b_2=0$, as well as in the fully general case, using Faà di Bruno's type expression. In particular, we will analyze the case $b_{n,k}=1$, which frequently occurs in enumerative combinatorics. Applications include explicit formulas for the $r$-Eulerian numbers. We will write also the case where $b_{n,k}=1$, as a matrix of passage.

Decompositions of Chow rings of direct sums of matroids
We prove two dual recursive decompositions as a graded $\underline{\mathrm{CH}}(M)\otimes \underline{\mathrm{CH}}(N)$-module of the Chow ring $\underline{\mathrm{CH}}(M\oplus N)$ of the direct sum of matroids. We use this to obtain a decomposition of $\underline{\mathrm{CH}}(M\oplus N)$ into irreducible $\underline{\mathrm{CH}}(M) \otimes \underline{\mathrm{CH}}(N)$-modules. The result implies a new recursive formula for the Eulerian numbers. Similarly, we find a recursive decomposition of the augmented Chow ring $\mathrm{CH}(M \oplus N)$ into $\mathrm{CH}(M)\otimes \mathrm{CH}(N)$-modules, generalizing some of the results of arXiv:2002.03341. We prove analogous decompositions of (augmented) Chow polynomials of weakly ranked posets in the sense of arXiv:2411.04070.
A bi-Stirling-Euler-Mahonian polynomial
Motivated by recent work on (re)mixed Eulerian numbers, we provide a combinatorial interpretation of a subfamily of the remixed Eulerian numbers introduced by Nadeau and Tewari. More specifically, we show that these numbers can be realized as the generating polynomials of permutations with respect to the statistics of left-to-right minima, right-to-left minima, descents, and the mixed major index. Our results generalize both the bi-Stirling-Eulerian polynomials of Carlitz-Scoville and the Stirling-Euler-Mahonian polynomials of Butler.

We give an algorithm to compute weighted Ehrhart functions of lattice polytopes for polynomial weights using Lagrange interpolation. We show how to compute generating functions of polynomials using those of unit cubes and Eulerian numbers, and use integer programming to study the algebraic properties of the Ehrhart ring of the $d$-th unit cube. Then we show some applications to weighted Ehrhart functions and enumeration problems.
Log-concavity of rows of triangular arrays satisfying a certain super-recurrence
Recurrences of the form \begin{equation*}
T(n,k) = (αn+βk +γ) \ T(n-1,k) + (α'n+β'k+γ')\ T(n-1,k-1)+δ_{n,0}δ_{k,0}. \end{equation*} show up as the recurrence for many well-studied combinatorial sequences such as the Stirling numbers of first and second kind, the Lah numbers, Eulerian numbers etc. Recently, many of these sequences have received generalisations that obey a recurrence of the form \begin{equation*}
T(n,k) = (αn+βk +γ)^l \ T(n-1,k) + (α'n+β'k+γ')^l\ T(n-1,k-1)+δ_{n,0}δ_{k,0}. \end{equation*} where $l$ is a positive integer. Many of these generalised sequences also satisfy properties such as unimodality, log-concavity, gamma-nonnegativity, real-rootedness that the original sequences satisfy. In this article, we give sufficient conditions for rows of triangular arrays, arising from the recurrence stated above, to be log-concave. We show that our sufficient condition is satisfied by many of the classical examples, thereby giving a new unified approach to proving their log-concavity. This sufficient condition also confirms a conjecture of Tankosic about the log-concavity of generalised Lah numbers.
Our main technique will be to interpret the triangular array $(T(n,k))$ as weighted lattice paths and produce an injection that is increasing in weight. Finally, we introduce a two-parameter generalisation of the Eulerian numbers analogous to the generalised Stirling and Lah counterparts. We prove that this sequence is palindromic and make some remarks about their gamma-nonnegativity and real-rootedness.
Structure constants of Peterson Schubert calculus
We give an explicit, positive, and type-uniform formula for all equivariant structure constants of the Peterson Schubert calculus in arbitrary Lie types, using only the Cartan matrix of the corresponding root system $Φ$. As an application, we derive a type-uniform formula for the mixed $Φ$-Eulerian numbers.
Signatures of Type $A$ Root Systems
Given a type $A$ root system $Φ$ of rank $n$, we introduce the concept of a signature for each subset $S$ of $Φ$ consisting of $n+1$ positive roots. For a subset $S$ represented by a tuple $(β_1, \ldots, β_{n+1})$, the signature of $S$ is defined as an unordered pair $\{a, b\}$, where $a$ and $b$ denote the numbers of $1$s and $-1$s, respectively, among the cofactors $(-1)^k \det(S \setminus \{β_k\})$ for $1 \le k \le n+1$. We prove that the number of tuples with a given signature can be expressed in terms of classical Eulerian numbers. The study of these signatures is motivated by their connections to the arithmetic and combinatorial properties of cones over deformed arrangements defined by $Φ$, including the Shi, Catalan, Linial, and Ish arrangements. We apply our main result to compute two important invariants of these arrangements: The minimum period of the characteristic quasi-polynomial, and the evaluation of the classical and arithmetic Tutte polynomials at $(1, 1)$.
Mixed Eulerian numbers and beyond
We derive explicit formulas for the matroidal mixed Eulerian numbers. We resolve a question posed by Berget, Spink, and Tseng, demonstrating that the invariant defined by matroidal mixed Eulerian numbers is precisely equivalent to Derksen's $\mathcal{G}$-invariant. As an application, we provide the first explicit, non-recursive formula for mixed Eulerian numbers. Our combinatorial approach draws inspiration from the classical work of Schubert and incorporates the cutting-edge contributions of Huh.

The ABCT variety is defined as the closure of the image of $G(2,n)$ under the Veronese map. We realize the ABCT variety $V(3,n)$ as the determinantal variety of a vector bundle morphism. We use this to give a recursive formula for the fundamental class of $V(3,n)$. As an application, we show that special Schubert coefficients of this class are given by Eulerian numbers, matching a formula by Cachazo-He-Yuan. On the way to this, we prove that the variety of configuration of points on a common divisor on a smooth variety is reduced and irreducible, generalizing a result of Caminata-Moon-Schaffler.

The Laplace--Pólya integral, defined by $J_n(r) = \frac1π\int_{-\infty}^\infty \mathrm{sinc}^n t \cos(rt) \mathrm{d} \, t$, appears in several areas of mathematics. We study this quantity by combinatorial methods; accordingly, our investigation focuses on the values at integer $r$'s. Our main result establishes a lower bound for the ratio $\frac{J_n(r+2)}{J_n(r)}$ which extends and generalises the previous estimates of Lesieur and Nicolas, and provides a natural counterpart to the upper estimate established in our previous work. We derive the statement by purely combinatorial, elementary arguments. As a corollary, we deduce that no subdiagonal central sections of the unit cube are extremal, apart from the minimal, maximal, and the main diagonal sections. We also prove several consequences for Eulerian numbers.
Remixed Eulerian numbers: beyond the connected case
In his study of generalised permutahedra, Postnikov considered the mixed volumes of hypersimplices, giving rise to the family of mixed Eulerian numbers. It comprises usual Eulerian numbers, binomial coefficients, Catalan numbers, and the large family of hit numbers. Nadeau and Tewari further gave a polynomial refinement of these, the remixed Eulerian numbers, which recover the natural $q$-analogs of these special families. Using a probabilistic model, we give several formulas for remixed Eulerian numbers for certain subfamilies, extending the known formulas for $q$-hit numbers due to Garsia and Remmel.
