On gapped repeats in a cyclic Fibonacci word
In this article, we consider the words with cyclic indices. For given $s$, we consider the pair $(ι,κ)$ of indices such that the word of length $s$ from $ι$ is equal to the word of length $s$ from $κ$. We give a characterization of such pairs for a cyclic Fibonacci word, and give the number of them.

An axiomatic framework from splitting and merging in MAT-labeled graphs, vines, and single-peaked domains
In recent work (Forum Math.~Sigma, 2024), we established a correspondence between MAT-labeled graphs arising from hyperplane arrangements and regular vines from probability theory. In this paper, we extend this connection to Arrow's single-peaked domains in social choice theory. We show that MAT-labeled complete graphs, regular vines, and maximal Arrow's single-peaked domains arise from the same recursive combinatorial structure. Our main result gives an axiomatic characterization of these objects using the language of combinatorial species. At the heart of this characterization are two fundamental operations, called splitting and merging, together with natural compatibility conditions that uniquely determine the structures. As consequences, we obtain explicit correspondences between maximal Arrow's single-peaked domains, MAT-labeled complete graphs, and regular vines, resolving an open problem in the economics literature concerning the combinatorial characterization of single-peaked domains. We further show, by a direct proof, that regular vines are equivalent to $(n,3)$-extremal lattices from formal concept analysis. Consequently, these extremal lattices also fit naturally into the same splitting and merging framework, providing another example from a different area that satisfies our axiomatic characterization.

Convolution, cumulants and infinitesimal generators in the formal power series ring
We extend the notions of finite free convolution and finite free cumulants to the setting of formal power series by introducing their natural analogues, namely $t$-deformed convolution and $t$-deformed cumulants. In this framework, we establish $t$-deformed analogues of the law of large numbers and the central limit theorem, revealing structural parallels with classical, free, and finite free probability theories. We show that the case $t=-1$ recovers classical convolution at the level of moment generating functions, thereby connecting the theory directly to classical probability. We further investigate the infinitesimal generators associated with $\boxplus^t$-continuous semigroups, deriving explicit representation formulas that clarify how these generators describe the infinitesimal evolution of the semigroup. In the case $t = d$, our results yield explicit formulas for finite free infinitesimal generators. In the case $t = -1$, we relate these generators to those of one-dimensional Lévy processes by identifying the corresponding terms in their representations. This establishes a direct connection between $\boxplus^t$-convolution semigroups and classical Lévy-Khintchine-type generators.
The Coboundary Quasi-Polynomials of Hyperplane Arrangements over Residually Finite Dedekind Domains
The characteristic polynomial plays an important role in study of hyperplane arrangements. There are several refinements of the characteristic polynomial. One of them is the coboundary polynomial defined by Crapo. Another refinement is the characteristic quasi-polynomial for an integral arrangement defined by Kamiya, Takemura, and Terao. Recently, the first and third authors introduced the characteristic quasi-polynomial for arrangement defined over a residually finite Dedekind domain. In this article, we introduce the common refinement of the coboundary polynomial and characteristic quasi-polynomial for an arrangement over a residually finite Dedekind domain.

Exponents of 2-multiarrangements of three lines over fields of positive characteristic
Wakamiko determined bases and the exponents for multiarrangements of three lines over a field of characteristic zero. In this paper, we study the exponents of multiarrangements of three lines for the case of positive characteristic. We provide an effective algorithm for computing the exponents. Furthermore, we prove that the multiplicity lattice has plenty of symmetries. We also discuss the validity of bases constructed from binomial expansions in the case of positive characteristic.
Signatures of Type $A$ Root Systems
Given a type $A$ root system $Φ$ of rank $n$, we introduce the concept of a signature for each subset $S$ of $Φ$ consisting of $n+1$ positive roots. For a subset $S$ represented by a tuple $(β_1, \ldots, β_{n+1})$, the signature of $S$ is defined as an unordered pair $\{a, b\}$, where $a$ and $b$ denote the numbers of $1$s and $-1$s, respectively, among the cofactors $(-1)^k \det(S \setminus \{β_k\})$ for $1 \le k \le n+1$. We prove that the number of tuples with a given signature can be expressed in terms of classical Eulerian numbers. The study of these signatures is motivated by their connections to the arithmetic and combinatorial properties of cones over deformed arrangements defined by $Φ$, including the Shi, Catalan, Linial, and Ish arrangements. We apply our main result to compute two important invariants of these arrangements: The minimum period of the characteristic quasi-polynomial, and the evaluation of the classical and arithmetic Tutte polynomials at $(1, 1)$.
$q$-deformation of chromatic polynomials and graphical arrangements
We first observe a mysterious similarity between the braid arrangement and the arrangement of all hyperplanes in a vector space over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$. These two arrangements are defined by the determinants of the Vandermonde and the Moore matrix, respectively. These two matrices are transformed to each other by replacing a natural number $n$ with $q^n$ ($q$-deformation). In this paper, we introduce the notion of ``$q$-deformation of graphical arrangements'' as certain subarrangements of the arrangement of all hyperplanes over $\mathbb{F}_q$. This new class of arrangements extends the relationship between the Vandermonde and Moore matrices to graphical arrangements. We show that many invariants of the ``$q$-deformation'' behave as ``$q$-deformation'' of invariants of the graphical arrangements. Such invariants include the characteristic (chromatic) polynomial, the Stirling number of the second kind, freeness, exponents, basis of logarithmic vector fields, etc.
Universal graph series, chromatic functions, and their index theory
In the present paper, we introduce the concept of universal graph series. We then present four invariants of graphs and discuss some of their properties. In particular, one of these invariants is a generalization of the chromatic symmetric function and a complete invariant for graphs.

Freeness of hyperplane arrangements associated with gain graphs
Athanasiadis studied arrangements obtained by adding shifted hyperplanes to the braid arrangement. Similarly, Bailey studied arrangements obtained by adding tilted hyperplanes to the braid arrangement. These two kinds of arrangements are associated with directed graphs and their freeness was characterized in terms of the associated graphs. In addition, there is coincidence of freeness. Namely, if Athanasiadis' arrangement is free, then the corresponding Bailey's arrangement is free, and vice versa. In this paper, we generalize this phenomenon by using gain graphs.

Vines and MAT-labeled graphs
Published in Forum of Mathematics, Sigma 12 (2024) e128 • View PublicationBIB
The present paper explores a connection between two concepts arising from different fields of mathematics. The first concept, called vine, is a graphical model for dependent random variables. This concept first appeared in a work of Joe (1994), and the formal definition was given later by Cooke (1997). Vines have nowadays become an active research area whose applications can be found in probability theory and uncertainty analysis. The second concept, called MAT-freeness, is a combinatorial property in the theory of freeness of logarithmic derivation modules of hyperplane arrangements. This concept was first studied by Abe-Barakat-Cuntz-Hoge-Terao (2016), and soon afterwards investigated further by Cuntz-M{ü}cksch (2020). In the particular case of graphic arrangements, the last two authors (2023) recently proved that the MAT-freeness is completely characterized by the existence of certain edge-labeled graphs, called MAT-labeled graphs. In this paper, we first introduce a poset characterization of a vine, the so-called vine. Then we show that, interestingly, there exists an explicit equivalence between the categories of locally regular vines and MAT-labeled graphs. In particular, we obtain an equivalence between the categories of regular vines and MAT-labeled complete graphs. Several applications will be mentioned to illustrate the interaction between the two concepts. Notably, we give an affirmative answer to a question of Cuntz-M{ü}cksch that MAT-freeness can be characterized by a generalization of the root poset in the case of graphic arrangements.

A type $B$ analog of Ish arrangement
The Shi arrangement due to Shi (1986) and the Ish arrangement due to Armstrong (2013) are deformations of the type $A$ Coxeter arrangement that share many common properties. Motivated by a question of Armstrong and Rhoades since 2012 to seek for Ish arrangements of other types, in this paper we introduce an Ish arrangement of type $B$. We study this Ish arrangement through various aspects similar to as known in type $A$ with a main emphasis on freeness and supersolvability. Our method is based on the concept of $ψ$-digraphic arrangements recently introduced due to Abe and the authors with a type $B$ extension.

Upper Embeddability of Graphs and Products of Transpositions Associated with Edges
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a graph, we associate each edge with the transposition which exchanges the endvertices. Fixing a linear order on the edge set, we obtain a permutation of the vertices. Dénes proved that the permutation is a full cyclic permutation for any linear order if and only if the graph is a tree. In this article, we characterize graphs having a linear order such that the associated permutation is a full cyclic permutation in terms of graph embeddings. Moreover, we give a counter example for Eden's question about an edge ordering whose associated permutation is the identity.

The Characteristic Quasi-Polynomials of Hyperplane Arrangements over Residually Finite Dedekind Domains
Published • View PublicationBIB
Kamiya, Takemura, and Terao initiated the theory of the characteristic quasi-polynomial of an integral arrangement, which is a function counting the elements in the complement of the arrangement modulo positive integers. They gave a period of the characteristic quasi-polynomial, called the LCM-period, and showed that the first constituent of the characteristic quasi-polynomial coincides with the characteristic polynomial of the corresponding hyperplane arrangement. Recently, Liu, Tran, and Yoshinaga showed that the last constituent of the characteristic quasi-polynomial coincides with the characteristic polynomial of the corresponding toric arrangement. In addition, by using the theory of toric arrangements, Higashitani, Tran, and Yoshinaga proved that the LCM-period is the minimum period of the characteristic quasi-polynomial. In this paper, we study an arrangements over a Dedekind domain such that every residue ring with a nonzero ideal is finite and give algebraic generalizations of the above results.

MAT-free graphic arrangements and a characterization of strongly chordal graphs by edge-labeling
Published • View PublicationBIB
Ideal subarrangements of a Weyl arrangement are proved to be free by the multiple addition theorem (MAT) due to Abe-Barakat-Cuntz-Hoge-Terao (2016). They form a significant class among Weyl subarrangements that are known to be free so far. The concept of MAT-free arrangements was introduced recently by Cuntz-M{ü}cksch (2020) to capture a core of the MAT, which enlarges the ideal subarrangements from the perspective of freeness. The aim of this paper is to give a precise characterization of the MAT-freeness in the case of type $A$ Weyl subarrangements (or graphic arrangements). It is known that the ideal and free graphic arrangements correspond to the unit interval and chordal graphs respectively. We prove that a graphic arrangement is MAT-free if and only if the underlying graph is strongly chordal. In particular, it affirmatively answers a question of Cuntz-M{ü}cksch that MAT-freeness is closed under taking localization in the case of graphic arrangements.

Freeness for restriction arrangements of the extended Shi and Catalan arrangements
Published • View PublicationBIB
The extended Shi and Catalan arrangements are well investigated arrangements. In this paper, we prove that the cone of the extended Catalan arrangement of type A is always hereditarily free, while we determine the dimension in which the cone of the extended Shi arrangement of type A is hereditarily free. For this purpose, using digraphs, we define a class of arrangements which is closed under restriction, and which contains the extended Shi and Catalan arrangements. We also characterize the freeness for the cone of this arrangement by graphical conditions.

Vertex-weighted Digraphs and Freeness of Arrangements Between Shi and Ish
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce and study a digraph analogue of Stanley's $ψ$-graphical arrangements from the perspectives of combinatorics and freeness. Our arrangements form a common generalization of various classes of arrangements in literature including the Catalan arrangement, the Shi arrangement, the Ish arrangement, and especially the arrangements interpolating between Shi and Ish recently introduced by Duarte and Guedes de Oliveira. The arrangements between Shi and Ish all are proved to have the same characteristic polynomial with all integer roots, thus raising the natural question of their freeness. We define two operations on digraphs, which we shall call king and coking elimination operations and prove that subject to certain conditions on the weight $ψ$, the operations preserve the characteristic polynomials and freeness of the associated arrangements. As an application, we affirmatively prove that the arrangements between Shi and Ish all are free, and among them only the Ish arrangement has supersolvable cone.

Chromatic Signed-Symmetric Functions of Signed Graphs
Stanley introduced the chromatic symmetric function of a simple graph, which is a generalization of a chromatic polynomial. This is expressed in terms of the integer points of the complements of the corresponding graphic arrangement. Stanley proved a combinatorial reciprocity theorem for chromatic functions. This is considered as an Ehrhart-type reciprocity theorem for the graphic arrangement. We introduce the chromatic signed-symmetric function of a signed graph, an analogue of the chromatic symmetric function, by the integer points of the complements of the corresponding signed-graphic arrangement and prove a generalization of Stanley's reciprocity theorem. Stanley has conjectured that the chromatic symmetric function distinguishes trees. This conjecture is also generalized for signed trees. We verify the conjecture for certain classes of signed paths.

Modular Construction of Free Hyperplane Arrangements
Published in SIGMA 16 (2020), 080, 19 pages • View PublicationBIB
In this article, we study freeness of hyperplane arrangements. One of the most investigated arrangement is a graphic arrangement. Stanley proved that a graphic arrangement is free if and only if the corresponding graph is chordal and Dirac showed that a graph is chordal if and only if the graph is obtained by "gluing" complete graphs. We will generalize Dirac's construction to simple matroids with modular joins introduced by Ziegler and show that every arrangement whose associated matroid is constructed in the manner mentioned above is divisionally free. Moreover, we apply the result to arrangements associated with gain graphs and arrangements over finite fields.

Enumeration of Flats of the Extended Catalan and Shi Arrangements with Species
Published in Journal of Integer Sequences, Vol. 24 (2021), Article 21.9.2 • Search Publication
The number of flats of a hyperplane arrangement is considered as a generalization of the Bell number and the Stirling number of the second kind. Robert Gill gave the exponential generating function of the number of flats of the extended Catalan arrangements, using species. In this article, we introduce the species of flats of the extended Catalan and Shi arrangements and they are given by iterated substitution of species of sets and lists. Moreover, we enumerate the flats of these arrangements in terms of infinite matrices.

Unit Ball Graphs on Geodesic Spaces
Published • View PublicationBIB
Consider finitely many points in a geodesic space. If the distance of two points is less than a fixed threshold, then we regard these two points as "near". Connecting near points with edges, we obtain a simple graph on the points, which is called a unit ball graph. If the space is the real line, then it is known as a unit interval graph. Unit ball graphs on a geodesic space describe geometric characteristics of the space in terms of graphs. In this article, we show that every unit ball graph on a geodesic space is (strongly) chordal if and only if the space is an $ \mathbb{R} $-tree and that every unit ball graph on a geodesic space is (claw, net)-free if and only if the space is a connected manifold of dimension at most $ 1 $. As a corollary, we prove that the collection of unit ball graphs essentially characterizes the real line and the unit circle.
