Poincare Polynomials of Heavy-Light Hassett Spaces
The Poincaré polynomials of the Deligne-Mumford space $\overline{M_{0,n}}$ of stable genus 0 curves have been widely studied by several authors such as Keel and Manin. These polynomials can be computed via a recursive formula that is combinatorial in nature, and their exponential generating functions satisfy elegant functional and differential equations. In this paper, we state some combinatorial formulas to the Poincaré polynomials of Hassett's heavy-light moduli spaces $\overline{M_{0,w_{m,n}}}$, with $m$ heavy marked points and $n-m$ light marked points. We express the Poincaré polynomials recursively in terms of the Möbius function of a certain lattice of set partitions. In the case of $m=2$, we get a Losev-Manin space. We give an explicit formula for the Poincaré polynomial or $\overline{M_{0,w_{2,n}}}$ by counting ordered set partitions; and give a recursive formula for this polynomial similar to that in the setting of $\overline{M_{0,n}}$. We prove this recursive formula using geometric and topological properties of the stratification of Losev-Manin spaces; and use an exponential generating function to simplify this recursive formula. Finally, we give a remarkable generalization to the ordered Bell numbers and a recurrence relation for this generalization.
Prime and Touchard Congruences of Mixed-Type Bell Numbers
This paper establishes a comprehensive combinatorial and arithmetic framework for mixed Stirling and mixed Bell numbers, bridging partition structures, Touchard polynomials, and prime-power congruences. Furthermore, we develop to $p$-adic valuation theory, proving prime-power Touchard congruences and higher-order modulo-$p^2$ refinements that generalize classical arithmetic properties of combinatorial sequences.
$m$-Bell and $m$-Stirling numbers: Iterated binomial transforms, hyper-Bessel functions, and moments of the Conway--Maxwell--Poisson distribution
We introduce a natural generalization of the Bell numbers: the $m$-Bell numbers $B^{(m)}_{n}$, characterized by the property that $m$ applications of the binomial transform reproduce the original sequence shifted $m$ places to the left. Their exponential generating functions satisfy $m$-th order ordinary differential equations whose solutions are hypergeometric (hyper-Bessel) functions, specializing to the exponential function when $m=1$ (classical Bell numbers) and to modified Bessel functions when $m=2$ (yielding "Bessel-Bell" numbers). Mirroring the Bell-Stirling correspondence, we construct $m$-Stirling triangular arrays from the two-term recurrence $S_m (n+1,k) = m \left\lfloor k/m \right\rfloor S_m(n,k)+S_m(n,k-1)$ and prove an elementary shift identity from which the central structure theorem follows: the row sums of the $m$-Stirling triangle reproduce $B^{(m)}_{n}$, and, more finely, the residue-class row sums are precisely the $m$ primitive $m$-Bell sequences. The $m$-Stirling numbers come in dual pairs (with first-kind partners, generalized falling factorials, and Lah-type companions), serve as conversion operators between polynomial bases, admit Dobiński-like formulas, and count congruence-constrained partitions in an urn model as well as restricted permutation insertion histories. Finally, we show that the $m$-Bell numbers govern the moments of the Conway-Maxwell-Poisson distribution with integer dispersion parameter $ν=m$: the scaled moments are combinations of fixed hyper-Bessel carrier ratios whose integer coefficients are precisely the primitive $m$-Bell sequences, recovering for $m=1$ the classical fact that the moments of the Poisson distribution are the Bell numbers.
The finitude of the fibers of the complementary Bell numbers
Subbarao and Verma introduced, in 1999, a number of open problems concerning the sequence $(f(n))_{n \geq 0}$ of complementary Bell numbers, which may be defined via Bell polynomials $B_{n}(x) = \sum_{k=0}^{n} \left\{ \begin{smallmatrix} n \\ k \end{smallmatrix} \right\} x^k$ so that $f(n) = B_{n}(-1)$. Yang [Electron. J. Combin., 2001] subsequently solved the first two problems from Subbarao and Verma, but the third such problem has remained open, to the best of our knowledge. The first part of this third problem asks whether or not $f(n)$ takes any given value only a finite number of times. We solve this problem in the affirmative, through a combined application of finite difference-based methods, partial Motzkin paths, the completeness of the Tate algebra with respect to the Gauss norm, and Strassmann's theorem.
A direct injection for the strong $q$-log-convexity of Touchard polynomials
We provide a direct injection for the well-known strong log-convexity of the Bell numbers $B_n$, that is $B_mB_n\le B_{m-1}B_{n+1}$ for every $1\le m\le n$. Our injection $Π_m\timesΠ_n\to Π_{m-1}\timesΠ_{n+1}$, where $Π_n$ denotes the set of all partitions of $[n]$, preserves the total number of blocks in the pair of partitions. In other words, it is also an injection for the strong $q$-log-convexity of Touchard polynomials, a result established by Chen, Wang, and Yang using analytical arguments. As an application of the injection, we also recover a related result of Chern, Diaconis, Kane, and Rhoades.
A Snail Race Problem
Inspired by Problem 17 from the 2024 American Mathematics Competition (AMC) 10B, this work focuses on enumerating the distinct outcomes of a snail race with specified number of ties of a certain type. We begin by developing a recurrence relation and subsequently derive a closed-form formula for the number of possible outcomes using the exponential generating function method. Two special cases of the problem are considered in detail. Our analysis also explores the connections between the solution to this problem and the ordered Bell numbers, Stirling numbers of the second kind, and partial Bell polynomials.
On Deranged Unit-Interval Parking Functions and the Deranged Bell Numbers
Unit-interval parking functions of length $n$ are enumerated by the Fubini numbers $F_n$ and are in explicit bijection with the ordered set partitions of $[n]$. We use this bijection to single out the unit-interval parking functions whose associated ordered set partition is \emph{deranged} in the sense of Belbachir, Djemmada, and Németh -- no block occupies the position indexed by its minimum element -- and call them the \emph{deranged unit-interval parking functions} $\DUPF_n$. Since the bijection restricts to the deranged objects, $|\DUPF_n| = \tilde F_n$, the $n$-th deranged Bell number. We give an intrinsic, coordinate-wise characterization of the deranged condition through the lucky cars (equivalently, the block leaders) of a parking function, and we refine the enumeration by total displacement, obtaining $d_m\Stir{n}{m}$ deranged unit-interval parking functions with $m$ blocks. We derive the exponential generating function $e^{1-e^x}/(2-e^x)$ by the symbolic method, prove a fixed-block convolution relating $F_n$, the Bell numbers, and $\tilde F_n$, refine the count by singleton blocks via $2$-associated Stirling numbers, and describe an $r$-start extension together with a deranged Cayley-permutation model. Worked examples and a table of values are included.
A sharper log-convexity inequality for Bell numbers
We prove a stronger version of the log-convexity inequality for the Bell numbers $B_n$. In particular, for $n\ge 5$, we have
\[
B_{n+1}B_{n-1} - (B_n)^2 \ge \sum_{i=1}^{n} F_i (B_{n-i})^2,
\]
where $F_i$ is the $i$-th Fibonacci number with $F_0=F_1=1$.
The simple proof is mostly combinatorial with elementary inequalities.
On the Schur-positivity of various sets of set partitions
A symmetric function is called Schur-positive if it admits an expansion in the Schur basis with nonnegative coefficients. In this paper, we study the Schur positivity of symmetric functions naturally associated with set partitions, with respect to two different notions of descent.
In the first case, the Schur expansion involves hook-shaped Young diagrams, and the corresponding coefficients are given by Touchard-Riordan polynomials, which enumerate matchings by their number of crossings. In the second case, the Schur functions correspond to two-rows Young diagrams, and the coefficients are partial sums of associated Bell numbers.
A key ingredient of our approach in the second case is the notion of a removable singleton, defined algebraically and shown to admit an equivalent combinatorial interpretation via jeu-de-taquin rectification of skew tableaux.
As an application, we establish Schur positivity for various classes of symmetric functions indexed by non-crossing partitions and partitions with a given number of parts. We provide an explicit combinatorial description of the tableaux that contribute to the Schur expansion, and we connects the obtained coefficients to some known integer sequences.
A Characterization of the $2m-4$ Case of Highly Sorted Permutations
Let $s$ denote West's stack-sorting map. In 2020, Defant characterized and enumerated the set $s^{n-m}(S_n)$ for $n \geq 2m-3$. While $|s^{n-m}(S_n)| = B_m$ when $n \geq 2m-2$, where $B_m$ denotes the $m$th Bell number, there are additional permutations when $n = 2m-3$. In this paper, we explore the more complex $n = 2m-4$ case, with several forms of additional permutations. We characterize $s^{m-4}(S_{2m-4})$ and find that its size is \[B_m + \frac{m^2 + 7m - 28}{2}\] for $m \geq 5$. This answers Defant's question about the $2m-4$ case. Furthermore, we find some differences in the behavior of the $2m-5$ case compared to the $2m-3$ and $2m-4$ cases.
Elementary asymptotics for the Stirling numbers of the second kind: The central range
We derive the local and central limit theorems for the Stirling numbers of the second kind by elementary means, obtaining as corollaries effective asymptotic estimates for the Bell numbers and for the moments of the distribution. We also develop asymptotic expansions along several directions, all based on a novel finite-differencing approach; this provides the first self-contained elementary justification of such expansions.
Sum rules for permutations with fixed points involving Stirling numbers of the first kind
We propose sum rules for permutations $p_n(k)$ of the ensemble $\left\{1,2,\cdots,n\right\}$ with $k$ fixed points, in the form of partial sums of their moments. The corresponding identities involve Stirling numbers of the first kind $s(q,r)$. Using a formula due to Vassilev-Missana and the Schlömlich expression of Stirling numbers, we also deduce sum rules for binomial coefficients. Connections with Bell numbers $B_n$ are outlined.
Bell Numbers and Stirling Numbers of the Mycielskian of Trees
We establish explicit formulas for Bell numbers and graphical Stirling numbers of complete multipartite graphs, complete bipartite graphs with removed perfect matchings, and Mycielskian trees. For complete multipartite graphs $K(n_1,\ldots,n_\ell)$, we provide a simplified proof that $B(G) = \prod_{i=1}^\ell \bell{n_i}$. We derive $B(K_{n,n} - M) = \sum_{k=0}^{n} \binom{n}{k} \bell{k}^2$ for removed perfect matching $M$, and for Mycielskian star graphs, $B(M(St_n); 3) = 2^n + 1$ and $B(M(St_n); 2n) = 2n^2 - 3n + 3$. Results extend to Mycielskians of arbitrary trees. Our computational verifications establish links between graphical Bell numbers and fundamental sequences in combinatorics and pattern avoidance, including identification of several OEIS entries: A000051, A096376, A116735, A384980, A384981, A384988, A385432, and A385437.
Sum of elements preceding records in set partitions
In this paper, we aim to derive an explicit formula for the total number of elements preceding records over all set partitions of $[n]$ with exactly $k$ blocks, as well as an asymptotic estimate for the total sum of elements preceding records in all set partitions of $[n]$, expressed in terms of Bell numbers. To achieve this, we analyze the generating function that enumerates set partitions of $[n]$ according to this statistic, which we denote by $\sumelements$.
Semi-simple partition algebras as centralizers of representations for rook monoids
Let $\mathcal{P}_k(δ)$, where $k$ is a positive integer and $δ$ some complex parameter, be the classical partition algebra over the complex numbers. In the case when $δ=n$, it is well-known that the algebra $\mathcal{P}_k(δ)$ is the centralizer of the symmetric group $S_n$ acting on the $k$-fold tensor space of the natural representation of $S_n$, for $n\geq 2k$. The algebra $\mathcal{P}_k(δ)$ is semi-simple for generic values of $δ$. In this paper, we show that semi-simple partition algebras appear as the centralizer algebras for certain representations of the rook monoids given by an iterative restriction-induction of the trivial representation. Along the way, we also give a decomposition of this iterative representation of the rook monoid into various tensor spaces and show that the corresponding dimensions are given by generalized Bell numbers.
Partition Functions and Kurepa Decomposition I: Algebraic computation and some physical Applications
This paper examines the algebraic features of notable polynomial functions and explores their combinatorial aspects by presenting precise decompositions in terms of Dobinski numbers, Bell numbers, and moments generating functions. Additionally, a new equivalence to the Kurepa factorial is developed to help investigate the Kurepa conjecture. In conclusion, we examine several physical phenomena related to Kurepa factorials, occupation number, Fermi-Dirac and Bose-Einstein distributions while exploring their algebraic characteristics.
Partial Deranged Bell Numbers and Their Combinatorial Properties
We introduce a novel generalization of deranged Bell numbers by defining the partial deranged Bell numbers $w_{n,r}$, which count the number of set partitions of $\left[ n\right] $ with exactly $r$ fixed blocks, while the remaining blocks are deranged. This construction provides a unified framework that connects partial derangements, Stirling numbers, and ordered Bell numbers. We investigate their combinatorial properties, including explicit formulas, generating functions, and recurrence relations. Moreover, we demonstrate that these numbers are expressible in terms of classical sequences such as deranged Bell numbers and ordered Bell numbers, and reveal their relationship to complementary Bell numbers, offering insights relevant to Wilf's conjecture. Notably, we derive the identity \[ \tildeφ_{n}=\Tilde{w}_{n,0}-\Tilde{w}_{n,1}=\tilde{w}_{n-1,0}-2\tilde {w}_{n-1,2}, \] which illustrates their structural connection to complementary Bell numbers. We also introduce a polynomial expansion for these numbers and explore their connections with exponential polynomials, geometric polynomials, and Bernoulli numbers. These relationships facilitate the derivation of closed-form expressions for certain finite summations involving Stirling numbers of the second kind, Bernoulli numbers, and binomial coefficients, articulated through partial derangement numbers.
Higher Order Bell Symmetric Functions
We study symmetric function analogues of the higher order Bell numbers. Their construction involves iterated plethystic exponential towers mimicking the single variable exponential generating functions for the higher order Bell numbers. We derive explicit recurrence relations for the expansion coefficients of the Bell functions into the monomial and power sum bases of the ring of symmetric functions. Using the machinery of combinatorial species, the Bell functions are proven to be the Frobenius characteristics of the permutation representations of symmetric groups on hyper-partitions of certain orders and sizes. In the order 1 case, we are able to give more details about the expansion coefficients of the Bell functions in terms of vector partitions and divisor sums as well as give a recurrence relation analogous to the well known recursion for the Bell numbers. Lastly, we use Littlewood's reciprocity theorem and the Hardy-Littlewood Tauberian theorem to prove that the Schur expansion coefficients of the order 1 Bell functions are certain asymptotic averages of restriction coefficients.
On Bell numbers of type $D$
In this paper, we will introduce Bell numbers $D(n)$ of type $D$ as an analogue to the classical Bell numbers related to all the partitions of the set $[n]$. Then based on a signed set partition of type $D$, we will construct the recurrence relations of Bell numbers $D(n)$. In addition, we deduce the exponential generating function for $D(n)$. Finally, we will provide an explicit formula for $D(n)$.
Recurrence relations for degenerate Bell and Dowling polynomials via Boson operators
Spivey found a recurrence relation for the Bell numbers by using combinatorial method. The aim of this paper is to derive Spivey's type recurrence relations for the degenerate Bell polynomials and the degenerate Dowling polynomials by using the boson annihilation and creation operators satisfying the commutation relation aa+-a+a=1.
In addition, we derive a Spivey's type recurrence relation for the r-Dowling polynomials.
